MAYFIELD SHARP SHOOTERS 
Three generations of Flemings represented the Ashburton
District in the smallbore rifle shooting North vs South
competition in Blenheim last weekend.
Phillippa was placed third overall qualifier for the New
Zealand junior team.
Martin was 9th overall in the Open section and top scorer
for the South Island in the Open section.
John achieved 6th in the Veterans grade.
Phillippa's and Martin's placings qualified them to shoot the
following day as part of the New Zealand team against
England.

Mayfield Swimming Pool
HELP NEEDED IFTHE POOL IS TO OPEN THIS SEASON
Much has been happening over the winter. The good news is that we had a leak in the wall near the bottom
of the pool; but Basil Ivey and his colleague Davy kindly came, and using their diving gear located and
fixed the leak – for free. We are truly grateful to them.
There is also a leak in the pipes somewhere. We are very
grateful to the Mayfield Rural Fire Unit, who will empty
the pool so that Pool and Pump World people can come
and locate the leak, and then dig up some concrete to get at
the pipe and fix it.
The third piece of good news is that the bank of the creek
to the south side of the pool is eroding, and causing gaps to
appear under parts of the fence. Tom Corbett has kindly
agreed to come and fix this before the season starts
If that’s the good news what’s the bad news??
The bad news is that if we do not get more helpers the pool
will not open this summer; otherwise far too much work
will fall on the shoulders of too few people, and tie them to
looking after the pool so that they will not be able to go away, even for a couple of days.
We are legally required to test the water of the pool three times a day during the swimming season. But we
are very short of people to do this. It takes about ten minutes in the morning and at lunch time to do the
water testing. We also need more people to learn to administer chlorine to the pool, which normally, but not
necessarily, is done in the evenings.
We need more people to join me to learn to do this. The Ashburton District Council is kindly arranging a
free training session to teach us how to administer chlorine in the correct doses – we don’t want to bleach
anyone! I am to contact them about this in early September. The more volunteers we get, the less it will be a
tie or burden for people. The current shortage is truly serious, and it is your community pool. If you are
able to help, or explore the possibility of helping, please contact me.
Gerald Jacobson, President.

Optimising Nitrogen to meet your nutrient budget
Rapid N Plus is manufactured in New Zealand by Omnia, a large well
established fertilizer company operating around the world, and for the past 13
years in New Zealand. Omnia’s Research & Development investment has
resulted in a patented ingredient in their nitrogen products for the rural sector
especially their liquid nitrogen; Rapid N Plus. The patented ingredient
increases the effectiveness of the nitrogen, hence, responses obtained from its
use are far greater than would be expected from the nitrogen content.
AgResearch trialed Rapid N Plus and showed responses from the product was four times greater than urea
based on the units of N applied. “While short term dry matter was significantly increased with the
allocation of Rapid N Plus, there was no negative effect on the pasture quality when compared with urea
at the first or second harvest. At the first harvest, herbage % N measured in the Rapid N Plus treatments
was about 0.6 % lower than the urea-N treatments. ( a difference of 3.0 vs 3.6 % N ) this difference could
be beneficial for lowering N losses because the proportion of excreta partitioned to urine increases with
an increasing % N content in the diet “ (quoted from the AgResearch trial report conclusion section).
These responses have been experienced by farmers and growers throughout the country who have used
Rapid N Plus on their pastures and crops, as a replacement to a urea application.
Incorporating Rapid N Plus into a farmer’s crop or pasture growing programme, enables a farmer to
maintain sufficient nitrogen levels for continued growth and production levels, while minimizing the units
of N used. This allows more “active” nitrogen to be used on pastures and crops alongside traditional forms
of solid nitrogen, to give a cost effective way of farming traditionally using successful, proven methods.
Rapid N Plus is a free flowing, stable liquid, that is easy to use and mixes with minimum agitation.
Rapid N Plus can be used throughout the growing season in combination with traditional forms of nitrogen.

MAYFIELD AND DISTRICT LIONS
July was the annual change over of the Mayfield
club. Chris Olley finished his year and Bill
Baldwin became President for the next year.
So what’s been happening? The Mt Somers bike
race last autumn didn’t raise as much money as
usual due to a postponement and other events on.
We still managed to support many organisations
and gave Ronald McDonald house $7500.
Recently Lions gave the Mt Somers Library $500
toward the running of their library.
Lions will be helping drop trees near the Mayfield
squash courts, we will cart the logs away for fire
wood and help to tidy up. We are also going to
give the Keith Murdoch rhododendron garden
near the tennis courts a tidy up.
Lions have offered to support the Mayfield Pool
committee in repairing the pool.
We are planning a batteries drive .We will be
calling in to properties in the Mayfield, Mt
Somers District to pick up any old batteries
St Bede’s canteen relay for life will be running
through Mayfield on about the 2nd of October,
this is part of a large relay they run all over the
South Island, they raise many thousands for
cancer. The Lions will be feeding about 30 of
them dinner and a packed lunch for the next day,
we also organise beds for them at the hall.
Lions will be splitting firewood all year, and will
deliver it free to local area (see ad.)
We are grateful to the Mayfield Service Centre for
a free WOF on our wood trailer.
The next tea meeting will be in September and we
will have Richard Loe speaking, it should be a
good night.

MAYFIELD & DISTRICT
CITIZENS ASSOCIATION
At the recent meeting two projects were given the
go ahead; It was decided to link Mayfield to the
Advance Mid Canterbury web site and promote
our district. A general description of the area and
the features of the village, together with some
photos will be included, so that the travelling
public can, maybe be enticed to stop and spend
some time, [and money], with us.
The second is to remove the vandalised trees
under the power wires on the northern entrance to
the village and replace them with some natives on
the east side and three or four deciduous autumn
coloured ones on the west side of the road. A
proposal is being drawn up to present to the many
different departments at Council. Ben Johnson is
leading this one and he will be looking for
sponsors for some of the trees.
Councillor Totty reported that the road rebuild
just past the Tavern wasn’t up to standard and will
be redone as soon as it warms up. No surprises
there!
The swimming pool is the bad news, lack of help,
and it needs a bit of work, sadly, closure might be
the only option at this point.

JUST OVER THE NEXT RIDGE
Lew Shaw
I recently had the opportunity to take a newish-to-Methven family on an afternoon walk up to Hookeys
Knob. This is about an hour’s easyish walk up the Mt Somers summit track from Sharplin Falls carpark.
What footwear to wear?, extra clothing?, a snack perhaps?, will I handle it?, were all questions these people
were asking themselves, but the walk went without drama & they got a view of Banks Peninsula & the
Plains for a little bit of effort. This family are recent imports to Methven, not unfamiliar with the outdoors
but the offer of a little local assistance smoothed the path, as it were.
You may be wanting to stretch your wings & extend your activities on the hill. Where do you source
some information & how do you challenge yourself without getting totally out of your comfort zone?
Contact the Department of Conservation in Geraldine. They’ll give you track conditions & make
suggestions based on your experience. Ascertain whether you & the rest of your group have the skills & the
gear to tackle the trip. Talk to friends, research with the computer. Get a weather report & tell a responsible
person where you’re going & when you’ll be back. All very common sense & obvious but you’d be
surprised how many `experienced` people get it wrong. Start on small, easy walks & build up. Go with
someone who has the experience. Initially anyway. Remember the basic food, warmth & shelter. One
question I pose is. `Will you be able to keep warm & dry if you have to stop moving?` Think sprained ankle,
flooded creek, benighted. I rarely go on the hill without a basic survival kit, including a headlight, raincoat
& waterproof leggings. It’s like insurance - not good when the grit hits the fan & you ain’t got some! Don’t
worry, I’ve made some mistakes & picked up a few tips.
Here’s a destination that could be a day trip or an overnighter. Manuka Hut. Built in 1928, used by
musterers, hunters & trampers.6 bunks, a fireplace & only a couple of hours walk from the road near Castle
Ridge Station on the Lake Heron Road, 45 minutes from Mt Somers township. It’s on the Te Araroa Trail, &
is a marked route from near Lake Emily, which you’ll reach in a 4WD & save yourself 3 km walking; a bit
of a mud bath in winter. Not difficult but plenty of bang for your boot leather. As with most huts, it’s first
up, best dressed, so there may be others there when you arrive. In that case, be prepared for a night on the
floor, or outside if you carry a fly. Always good insurance I reckon; no snoring to put up with (unless your
tent mate cuts wood in the night) & gives you more options. Winter in a tent or fly is no colder than a hut you could cook & socialise round the fire with the hut dwellers & retire to your nylon abode when you wish.
Another option is to camp somewhere else. Look for shelter & proximity to water. Keep the billy-lids in the
family happy with some snack foods, a book, a cheap headlight & brag about your astronomic knowledge
by taking them outside at night, lie on your backs & point out the Southern Cross.

IT IS A PRIVILEGE
It is a very great privilege to be with people
during the highs and lows in their lives. Recently I
took the funeral service for a lady who died at the
age of one hundred and one. Less than two weeks
later we had a baptism of a baby boy.
But this privilege isn’t just for clergy. We can all
get alongside our friends and neighbours and give
support in the low times and rejoice in the good
times. And by and large country folk are very
good at that.
By being there for others, we are following Jesus’
example. His first miracle was turning the water
into wine at the wedding at Cana. Presumably the
bride and or bridegroom were relatives or friends,
because Jesus’ mother and friends were there too.
We are also told that Jesus raised his friend
Lazarus from the dead and healed Simon Peter’s
mother-in-law. But Jesus also ministered to
strangers as he healed the deaf, the blind and the
lame. So I guess there is a message in there for us
too. Sometimes though our offer of help can backfire on us. Several years ago I offered to help
some young children across the road in
Ashburton. They took one look at me and took off
down the same side of the road. Then I
remembered my black eyes. A few days before, I
