This was done on a Saturday morning when the road was quieter and more help was available. Plants were supplied by Southern Woods and the ADC contributed to the cost of the plants. They look really good and thanks goes to Ben and Vicks Johnson for the extra work they have put in. The Mayfield and District Lions Club were approached by the Rural Fire Fighters Welfare Fund to fundraise for their worthy cause. It was decided by the then fund raising committee to do a battery. This was done over a month, stock piled and sold for scrap to which $5,000 was donated. The Courier newspaper was informed and an advertising feature was done last week to show this off with some pics of yours truly, Ron Cross and Ian Fielder, whom is a trustee. Ian mentioned this is a Mid Canterbury initiative, open to family of rural fire fighters who need a bit of assistance and each application is taken on its individual merits. The Welfare Fund is of interest to other provinces and they are enquiring how to get their own started. We have spent some extra hours in the Library lately sorting and making more room for the new releases that keep arriving!! Here are some of the latest titles. There are very good reviews on each if the title and author are 'googled'. 'The Anchoress'...Robyn Cadwallader. [Rosemary has read this and gave it an excellent. About a nun set in the 1200s] 'Time and Time Again'.... Ben Elton [a cracking thriller]. 'A sudden departure of the Frasers' ...Louise Candlish [they were the life and soul of the party so why did they disappear overnight?] 'After You"....Jojo Moyes. [sequel to the bestselling 'Me Before You' which we have on the shelves also]. 'The Father'....Anton Svensson. [crime novel based on the true story set in Sweden about 3 brothers who became Sweden's most wanted criminals] 'King Rich' ....Joe Bennett. [set in Christchurch post Feb 2011 earthquake where a leaning hotel becomes home for a man and his dog] 'Snow on the Lindis'....Madge Snow with Bee Dawson. [Madge Snow writing about her life on the iconic station Morven Hills in the MacKenzie country.] There is some excellent reading to be had, to suit all tastes and ages. We have an interesting collection of modern children's books too for the littlies to read while the parents choose their books. These are beautifully illustrated New Zealand publications on the bottom shelf of the Contemporary Fiction section by the couches. This Contemporary Section seems to be underused and yet it is full of true gems ....... books that can really make you think, and linger in your mind long after turning the last page .It is writing that contains characters who behave in a way most readers can imagine.i.e. the characters are believable and realistic, dealing with truths and emotions we all share. The book is normally set in the present and in a seemingly real place [rather than fantasy or futuristic] The events and plots are those which could and do happen in real life and are often socially relevant. The writing is of a more serious tone perhaps but not always, and really holds the interest so is well worth having a look and giving it a chance. Many of our readers have discovered this genre only through our little Library and are now well and truly 'hooked'. There is usually a list of suggestions on the bookcase to start with. Hope to see more locals browsing these shelves of treasures.....all welcome!! Anne C. ph 3039150 Pam .....3039767 Robbie.....3039734 Anne for more info. But with improving temperatures & longer days, it’s time to dust off the ole` clodhoppers & burn off some calories. If you’re super fit, you might have already entered Glen Currie’s Mission Mt Somers, so some of us who are SAR marshals for the event, will wave as you scoot by. Good luck. Your Mt Somers Walkway members will be busy on Tuesday, doing some track clearing on the summit track & South face section round to the Acland Shelter. Wind & snow play havoc but with hand tools & a bit of sweat, it’s amazing what a few volunteers can do. The Mt Alford track is open again & this was clear of wind/snowfall as of 4 weeks ago. The native clematis will be in flower & well worth a look. Being a climber just keep your eyes peeled in the mid canopy, some just 20 minutes up from the carpark. `Till next time, keep your fitness up & enjoy our big, beautiful backyard. Better still, do it for & with your kids. Mt Sinclair toward Somers and Winterslow Mid skyline Rangitata River From near the campsite at head of Lake Coleridge, looking up the Wilberforce Just back from the top end of Lake Coleridge from a brief overnighter in the old caravan. Collected plenty of dust but what an interesting area. We camped at the TrustPower - provided site at the old Harper diversion; plenty of possies to get out of the wind, a smelly longdrop & a tap that didn’t work. But scenic & not that popular. Maybe busier in the trout season. Had a decko at Ryton Bay on the way back; only half a dozen caravans there now but well used by boaties. Lake Coleridge township rounded off the trip; very clean & tidy place with a cracker of an info board with photos of older times. All within an hour of Methven. Came back for a SAR overnight security job with several others on Sunday night at the rodeo site. Didn’t get to go but at least they had a decent day for it. We did get to have a yarn with the members of the Jowett Car Club & look at their fine automobiles. Some of these had a flat four cylinder engine that, for the day, were a real performer. 55 years ago, my Dad had a Jowett Jupiter engine powering a speedboat. This won numerous South Island Championships competing with the likes of Ray Savage, Peter Knight & Doug Syme. I remember one day Dad was tuning this engine in the back yard, when it backfired & flames belched from the canopy. Mum grabbed the coal bucket which lived under a dripping tap & emptied it over the offending engine. Dad was mortified as all he could see was coal dust going down the carburettor & ruining the beast! Lew Shaw CROSSROADS - NEWSLETTER - November 2015 Mayfield Mt Somers Anglican Parish – Plains Presbyterian Parish REFRESHMENT As I write, it is raining. Just a steady light rain. It certainly isn’t enough at this point to break a possible drought, but as I look out of the window, I can see the foliage from ground level upwards, smiling as it is refreshed by the rain. The grass and leaves seem to sparkle in a way they didn’t in yesterday’s heat. Which is interesting because all through the bible, water is used as a symbol of refreshment and new life. It is used in baptism and is added to the wine in the communion cup. Maybe water became so important, because the bible had its source in Eastern civilization, where water was a scarce and precious commodity. I guess we tend to take it for granted. We turn on a tap and out it runs. My hope is that the predictions for a drought this Summer are incorrect and the grasses and trees continue to smile as they lift their faces to the rain. The older of the two, a five year old lad, grabbed his sibling by the back of his head and shoved his face into the water hole. As the boy recovered and stood laughing and dripping, the mother ran to the yard in a panic. "Why on earth did you do that to your little brother?" she asked as she shook the older boy in anger. "We were just playing 'church' Mum", he said. "I was baptising him - in the name of the Father, the Son and 'in the hole-he-goes'!" Three Boys Three boys are in the school yard bragging about their fathers. The first boy says, "My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a poem, and they give him $25." The second boy says, "That's nothing. My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a song, and they give him $200." The third boy says, "I got you both beat. My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a sermon, and it takes eight men to collect all the money!"
