W
hen
young
athletes from
around
the
United States and Canada
converge upon the Henry
Hershey Field in Hershey,
Pennsylvania on Saturday,
August 2, a 12-year-old runner from Hampton will be
among them.
Devinne
Cullinane
recently earned a spot in
the 800-meter running event
that will be part of the 31st
North American Finals of
the Hershey’s Track and
Field Games. She will join
more than 500 of her peers
competing at the finals.
As a participant in the
program offered each year
by the Hampton Recreation
Department, Devinne bested runners age 11-12 from
five New England states
(NH, CT, RI, MA and ME)
and Nova Scotia in recent
regional competition.
“She actually beat everyone in Region Six,” says
Hampton Rec Program
Coordinator, Rene Boudreau. “She beat everybody
pretty soundly. Her time at
States was 2:36. She’s pretty
quick.”
According to Boudreau,
sending an athlete from
Hampton to Hershey “has
been a long time coming. We
always sent half our team to
states; [now Devinne] will
take the final step and go to
nationals!”
Devinne, who has been
taking part in Hampton
Rec’s Hershey Track and
Field program since she
was about 7 (and competing
once she turned 9) is looking forward to this next step
in her running career.
“I’m really excited about
it,” says Devinne, an honor
student who will be entering seventh grade at St. Patrick’s School in Portsmouth
this fall. “I’m hoping to do
really well down there [in
PA].”
Though she admits
she doesn’t know what to
expect, she acknowledges
that “the race is going to
be really tough.” She figures she will be running the
800m “against 8 or 9 other
kids” heading toward the
finish line.

Good food for a good cause

HAMPTON | The Hampton Historical Society will host
their 7th annual Southern
Style Pig Roast on Saturday,
August 30 from 12-3 p.m. on
the grounds of Tuck Museum.
Tickets are now on sale.
This popular fundraising
event will feature an encore
of past years’ menu: Roasted
pig, pasta salad, potato salad,
cole slaw, baked beans, applesauce, barbecue sauce, rolls,
dessert and beverages.
Besides great food, there
will be a silent auction (conducted from 12-2:30 p.m.),
a 50/50 raffle, door prizes,
music by Yvonne’s Music Factory, and Bubba the Clown,
who will entertain the kids.
Tickets for the pig roast
are $20 for adults and $10 for
children age 9-16; children age
8 and under are free with an
adult. The ticket prices have
not gone up in seven years,
so plan on buying tickets and
enjoy good food for a good
cause.

Talent runs in the family

When it comes to painting,
talent is all in the genes as
far as artist Betsey Miller is
concerned.
Miller, a North Hampton resident, hails from
a long line of artists. Her
own personal talent, however, wasn’t tapped until
about 10 years ago when
she became a retiree wintering in Florida.
“I took up a little art
class,” she explains. Her
efforts created quite the
buzz.
“Everyone said, ‘You’ve
got something, Betsey,’”
she says.
And so she does. Miller
has a selection of her paintings currently on exhibit
in at the town’s library. A
lovely assortment of her

and portraits hang on the
walls of the library’s Roberta Craig Room for public
view.
For
someone
who
has only been painting a
decade after taking a minimum of instruction, Miller
has proved herself to be an
accomplished artist.
Her use of colors is stunning, and each painting
— whether mastered in oils
or watercolors — springs to
life in a vibrant treat for the
eye and a cheerful delight
for the soul.
As a member of the Seacoast Artist Association,
Miller enjoys “being surrounded by good art.” And
as painting styles go, “I’m
a realist,” she says. “I like
pretty things. I’m an oldfashioned painter.”
Speaking of which,
Miller discloses that she
has something in common
with another old-fashioned American painter,
one George deForest Brush
(1855-1941). The artistic
connection?
“He was my grandfather,” she says. “He was
a portrait artist who went
to Europe” to study at the
Paris studio of Jean-Leon
Gerome. His work hangs in
museums around the US,
including the Museum of
Fine Arts in Boston.
An award-winning artist known for his series of
paintings of American Indians, Brush will also be rep-
resented at an art exhibit
open to the public. “The
Indian Paintings” will be
displayed at the National
Gallery of Art in Washington, DC from September 14
through January 4, 2009.
The exhibition will feature 20 of Brush’s works,
many of which belong to
private collectors and several that have recently
come to light.
According to the National Gallery of Art, “these
stunningly beautiful paintings are studio compositions: Complex mediations
on the advent of modernism in which the Indian
serves as metaphor.”
Having their own individual artwork represented
in two very diverse exhibits just months apart is a
source of pride for Miller,
especially when it comes to
family and fame.
“He raised six children,”
she says of her late grandfather, who often used his
family as subjects for his
paintings. “He was successful in his lifetime.”
A success in her own
right, Betsey Miller will
exhibit her work in the
Roberta Craig Room at the
North Hampton Library
through the end of July, so
there’s still time to stop by

High risk time for EEE/WNV
Church hosts burger burn fundraiser

the southeastern part of the
state in combating EEE and
WNV.
“Unfortunately, it is a part
of the ‘new normal’ in New
England that we need to use
repellent in the summer,”
says DHHS Commissioner
Nicholas Toumpas. “It should
be routine for everyone. We
do not want anyone else to
become ill with either of these
diseases.”
According to DHHS officials, “EEE and WNV are
transmitted through the bite
of an infected mosquito that
has picked up the virus by
feeding on an infected bird.
EEE is a serious disease that
carries a high mortality rate
for those who contract the
serious encephalitis form of
the illness. Symptoms may
include high fever, severe
headache, stiff neck, and sore
throat. There is no treatment
for the disease, which can lead
to seizures and coma. Symptoms usually occur 4 to 10
days after being bitten.”

officials, “the risk of contracting the infection is low and in
the overwhelming majority of
cases there are no symptoms
or just mild, flu-like symptoms. At times, West Nile virus
can causes meningitis and can
be a serious threat to seniors,
young children and those
with compromised immune
systems. If illness does occur,
it typically happens within 3
to 15 days after being bitten by
an infected mosquito.”
Besides all previously
approved-repellents (formulas
containing DEET, picaridin or
oil of lemon eucalyptus) a new
type — IR3535 — has been
approved by the US Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as being both
safe and effective in reducing
the risk of mosquito bites.

HAMPTON | The First Baptist Church of Hampton will
hold its annual Burger Burn, yard sale and bake sale on
Saturday, July 26, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in front of the church,
located at 36 Winnacunnet Road in Hampton. The burger

at Antiques Appraisal Day
RYE | Did Grandma buy that glass kerosene lamp in
the den at Woolworth’s? Or could it be a very collectible
Sandwich Glass piece? Now is the time to find out.
The Rye Historical will host its third annual Antiques
Appraisal Day on Saturday, August 9, from 10:30 a.m. to
3 p.m. at the Rye Congregational Church, located at 580
Washington Road in Rye.
Antique dealers/ auctioneers/ appraisers, Stephen
Bennett of Portsmouth, Dan Olmstead of Newfields and
Aime Sevigny of North Berwick will donate their time to
the event and will give verbal appraisals of any number of
treasures.
They will consider items such as books, jewelry, coins,
dolls, toys, military items, baskets, quilts, rugs, paper goods
and pottery, so start selecting those items now.
The cost for appraisal is $5 for one item, $10 for three
items, and $15 for five items. There is a limit of 10 items
person. The Historical Society will also have antiques and
collectibles for sale, as well as an assortment of items from
their gift shop available for purchase.
All proceeds raised at the event will benefit the Rye
Town Museum, which is operated by the Historical Society.
Located across the street at 10 Olde Parish Road, the
museum will also be open for viewing for the duration of
Antiques Appraisal Day.
SEACOAST | It’s that time
of year again: Time to be even
more aware of the dangers
of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) and West Nile Virus
(WNV).
The New Hampshire
Department of Health and
Human Services (DHHS)
announced this week that the
high-risk time period for seeing activity involving EEE and
WNV has begun.
While overall mosquito
testing season runs from June
1 through October 31, positive results in mosquitoes and
animals as well as humans
generally occur between July
20 and October 20, approximately three months of diligence on the part of the public
as well as officials.
“This is the time of year we
would expect to start seeing
positive test results,” observes
Dr. Jose Montero, director of
Public Health at DHHS. “We
certainly hope that we do not,
but we must be prepared. We
are again asking that clinicians
report any neurologically com-
patible illness so those cases
can be tested and investigated
as appropriate.”
No positives have been
identified in the Granite State
thus far for 2008, though 2,131
mosquito pools, one horse
sample, and 56 human samples have been tested.
Last year, no specimens
tested positive for WNV, but
there were three human cases,
six mosquito pools, and two
animals identified with EEE.
WNV has already been
detected this year in Connecticut, New York, and Massachusetts; one person from
Connecticut was diagnosed
with the disease. EEE has not
been detected yet this year in
New England, though there
has reportedly been substantial activity in the southern
portion of the United States.
Back in 2006, DHHS
declared a public health
threat for Rockingham, Eastern Hillsborough, Southern
Merrimack, and Southern
Strafford Counties due to the
increased risk people contracting either disease. DHHS has
maintained that designation

Go wild for reading at Lane Library
HAMPTON | Every day is a good day for reading,
especially in the Lane Memorial Library’s Children's Room,
where theme for this year’s summer reading program is
“G'Day for Reading.”
In perfect tune with the program’s current focus on Australia
and the Down Under theme, a Wildlife Encounters program
will be presented at the library on Wednesday, July 30 at 10
a.m. Participants attending the event will be introduced to
animals of all sorts — including a baby wallaby.
Parents should note that due to an overwhelming response
to this year’s summer programming, there is currently a wait
list to attend the Children's Room events.
Don’t forget the grand finale on Wednesday, July 30 at 6:30
p.m. Children signed up for the reading program will receive
a gift certificate and book to celebrate their participation in
the Summer Reading Program. There will also be a drawing
of tickets for prizes donated by generous local vendors and
organizations.
The Lane Memorial Library is located on Academy Avenue

no-kill feline rescue and adoption organization located on

difference in these animals’ lives.

new site for summer fair

moving to a new location.
Still crafting at 41 years
young, the Rockingham
Craftsmen will hold their
summer fair on Saturday,

p.m. at Stratham Hill Park,

Invasive plant program scheduled

The program, entitled
“Invasive Plants, Their History, Their Control,” will
be presented by Douglas
Cygan, an invasive species
coordinator with the New
Hampshire Department of
Agriculture.
Cygan is also coordinator
for the recently-formed New

Webb, president of the
James House Association,
wants to know, “Do you
have an invasive plant in
your yard?”
Whether the answer is
“yes,” “no” or “not sure,”
the Seacoast area community will have an opportunity
to find out more at an informative program scheduled
Hampshire Coastal Watershed Invasive Plant Partnership (CWIPP). According to
Webb, CWIPP’s goal is “to
cooperate on assessing the
extent of infestation and
controlling invasive species in our coastal watershed, including those they
manage, 1/4 million acres
of land. Initially, the partnership will focus on the
perennial pepperweed.”

NH Coastal Program, NH
Department of Transportation, NH Department
of Agriculture, the NH

For the eleventh summer
in a row, Rockingham Community Action’s Tales to Go
van will hit the road, making stops in Epping, Exeter,
Hampton, Portsmouth, Raymond and Seabrook.
“We have a van full of
summer reading fun,” says
Kristie Conrad, RCA Literacy
Services Coordinator. “Tales
to Go brings an interactive
storytime filled with arts
activities, healthy snacks and
the need to engage children
early in life in exciting, interactive reading opportunities
and to have daily access to
books and the printed word.
In addition, “summer slide”
can happen for those school-
age children who do not
maintain reading skills recently acquired in school. This
summer’s stories will include
such books as, “I Like Myself!”
by Katie Beaumont, and “The
One, The Only Magnificent

In addition to storytime,
Tales to Go offers arts activities and healthy snacks integrated into some element of
each book, building on the
storytime experience for all
who attend. At the end of
each visit, children are able to
choose a book to own from a
selection of quality, age-appropriate books provided through
the Reading is Fundamental
(RIF) Program. RIF, a federally
funded program, allows children the opportunity to select
quality paperback books of
their own to keep in order to
build up home collections.
“When we visit, children
are so excited to be able to
choose their own books,”
explains Michelle Powers,
RCA RIF Coordinator. “They
can’t believe they are getting
books for free!”
Powers further notes that
many of the families served
by RCA do not have the
resources to purchase books.
“With all of the stresses on
pocketbooks right now, books
are the last thing families can
buy,” Powers observes.
RCA must match the RIF
federal funds with donations
raised locally. In the recent
past, donations have been
received from such businesses
as Target and Comcast.
“We have great community support and want to thank
our contributors for their generous donations,” says Powers. “They recognize the value
of our work and have been
there to help us match the RIF
funds we’ve needed.”
The Tales to Go traveling
literacy project was created in
1998 by Rockingham Community Action, whose mission is
to alleviate and prevent poverty, and to promote self-reliance. RCA’s Literacy Services
provides a variety of early literacy programs and projects
aimed at promoting an early
love of reading, through
access to quality books, interactive arts-based literacy
activities for young children

Hampton Community Band
Tuning in for summer concert series

‘I’ve Got Plenty ‘O Nuttin’,’
‘It Ain’t Necessarily So’),
“Stompin’ at the Savoy,”
“Themes Like Old Times”
(‘Alexander’s Ragtime Band,’
For Cyrus, it’s a family
affair: His wife Joanna and
their younger son Chris (an
eighth grader) both play
trumpet; older son John (a
senior) plays trombone, and
Tony’s brother, who plays
French horn, comes all the
way up from Lowell, MA.
Other band members, a number of them with previous
community band experience
(including Cyrus himself),
hail from all over the Seacoast region.
The band prepares for
their concert season by taking part in a series of four
Monday night rehearsals,
lasting about an hour and a
half each. Each year, Cyrus
aims “to get a good mix” for
‘Peg O’ My Heart,’ ‘I Want A
Girl,’ ‘By the Light of the
Silvery Moon,’ ‘12th Street
Rag’), “You’re a Grand Old
Flag,” and “Stars and Stripes
Forever” encore.
Under Cyrus’ direction,
the Hampton Community
Band “has grown a lot,” he
says. Starting out with about
25 musicians, the band has
expanded to its current 45
members. Many have participated since the first year,
others have joined along the
way and still others are new
to the group this year. The
age range is from middle
school and high school students, on up to middle age
and beyond.
his musicians to play, being
careful to “get music at their
level, and not make it so hard
that they don’t have enough
time to learn it but not so
easy that it’s boring” for the
audience.
“When I choose the music
I’m not sure who I’m going
to have in the group but I
have an idea,” he says, adding that band participation is
“aimed at adults and graduates.” In fact, Cyrus says that
the band came into being
partly because of his own
experience with a community band in Bangor, as well as
“wanting to give my graduates a chance to play somewhere.”
As the years went by and
interest in the band grew,
“I was kind of surprised
at how many current students wanted to be part of
it,” Cyrus says. “That’s what
kind of filled it out and made
it work.”
For several members,
being part of the band has
given them the opportunity to pick up and play an
instrument that they hadn’t
played for years. For Kittery
resident Jen Thayer (flute),
“It's been over 20 years since
I have performed in a concert
band. I have been writing
and performing music since
high school, but once I graduated I performed mostly in
original and/or cover rock
bands, done some studio
work, and dabbled in other
genres — but stopped the
concert music pretty much
altogether. I didn't realize
how much I missed it, so
this has been the best thing
for me.”
Thayer joined the band
along with Shapleigh Middle School co-worker Agnes
Bowen, a fellow flutist who
had “heard about the Community Band and asked me
if I would be interested,”
Thayer explains. “I can say
that joining the band has
motivated me to practice,
and bring my playing ability up to — and maybe even
surpass some day — where I
left off in high school.”
She adds that Cyrus “is
a great director. He's very
personable and makes it a lot
of fun. He's also very patient
and encouraging, and trust
me, I'm pretty rusty! I'm
happy to say, though, that
since I'm enjoying this so
much, I'm getting back into
the swing of it and looking
forward to our first performance.”
For Chris Antlitz, playing alto sax for the Hampton
Community Band helps to
sate his appetite for instrumental performance.
“I love it,” he says. “It’s an
opportunity to get together
with people I’ve taken band
with. Everybody has a good
time. Mr. Cyrus is a great
teacher and he picks really
great songs to play.”
A WHS alumnus, Antlitz
is currently a business major
at UNH — a worthwhile educational pursuit that doesn’t
leave a whole lot of time for
music appreciation.
“Now that I’m in college,
I can’t play as much as I used
to,” Antlitz explains. “Having the community band
every summer is the really
my only opportunity to play
again, and I really value that
opportunity that Mr. Cyrus
gives us to come back every
year.”

They have just completed a
selection from the soundtrack
of the motion picture, “ET.”
“That’s a hard one,”
Cyrus comments after the
final note plays. “You did
very well.”
Quickly flipping to the
next page of sheet music on
the stand in front of him,
Cyrus tells his musicians,
“Let’s do an easy one —
Mozart.”
Before he raises his baton,
he reminds them with a lilting series of “d-words” (deedee-dah, dee-dah-dah) how
the piece should play out.
Seconds later, instrumental
music once again fills the
band room at Winnacunnet
High School.
As the rehearsal continues, Cyrus interacts with his
musicians, at times interrupting the music to discuss
various elements (such as
rhythm) and timing (such as
the precise moment when a
particular section is to join
in).
Next, switching to
“Pavane,” he tells the group,
“The challenge for us is that
this is a small piece and
there’s no percussion; there’s
no pulse.” No matter — it
sounds pretty darned good,
and Cyrus offers an individual round of applause.
“That was great!” he says,
before directing the musicians in “Sandpaper Ballet,”
a piece that definitely has a
“chicka-chicka-chicka-chicka-tweeeet!” quality to it.
The patter that continues
throughout and between the
selections is so thoroughly
peppered with musical terms
and jargon that those with
an untrained ear would
swear they were in a foreign language class rather
than a band room. But when
the music plays, it’s a fluid,
vibrant language everyone
can understand.
Local audiences have
enjoyed the music of the
Hampton Community Band
for about a half-dozen summers now, and this year will
be no exception. According
to Cyrus, the selections that
the public will hear during
an upcoming trio of free outdoor concerts will represent
“a wide mix” of musical
genres.
“This year it’s all new,”
he says, “marches and some

Williams, Leroy Anderson, a
little bit of classical ... We try
to have a wide mix.”

second annual Festival of Fun

Last year's performances of
“Spousal Deafness” sold out, so
ACT ONE has invited Carlisle and
Poulin (aka The Poolyles) to reprise
their hilarious musical comedy.
“Spousal Deafness” combines
original songs, sketch comedy
and 2-D painted props to explore
the wacky world of relationships.
Gordon and Susan tackle the real
issues: Romance, underwear, vacation negotiations (sound familiar?)

Coolidge Center celebrates
‘Shoals and Shorelines’
PORTSMOUTH | Beaches, waves, and shoreline
vistas — all are featured in
“Shoals and Shorelines,” a
perfect summer exhibition
hosted by the Coolidge Center for the Arts.
The exhibition runs
through August 24 at the
Coolidge Center for the
Arts, located on the grounds
of the Wentworth-Coolidge
Mansion at 375 Little Har-
bor Road in Portsmouth.
“Shoals and Shorelines”
showcases the artistic talents of 16 regional artists
including Carol AronsonShore, George Augusta,
Sean Beavers, Bill Childs,
Simon Harling, Sarah
Haskell, Robert Scott Jackson, Dustan Knight, Stan
Moeller, Susan Pratt-Smith,
Don Stone N.A., Rose Theriault, Wendy Turner, and
Molly Wensberg.
“In this show we feature
large-scale works, exquisite glass jewelry, as well
as small painting treasures,”
Gallery Director Dody Kolb
explains. “As is always the
case here at the Gallery at
the Coolidge Center, these
artists are all strong professional artists of considerable
note.”
A celebration honoring the artists featured in
“Shoals and Shorelines” will
take place at the Coolidge
Center for the Arts on Sunday, July 27 from 5-7 p.m.
The public is invited to
attend.
The gallery is open
Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
and Sunday from 1-5 p.m. or
by appointment. Admission

Summer 2008 is only at the halfway point, the Great Bay Stewards are already preparing this
fall’s “Art of Great Bay” art show.
The show will be held Thursday
through Saturday, November 6-8
at the Hugh Gregg Coastal Conservation Center, located on the
grounds of the Great Bay Discovery Center in Stratham.
Submitted art should depict
the Great Bay and its watershed
through the flora, fauna and
human activities of the area. The
Stewards are also especially hoping to feature sculpture, glass,
pottery, fabric art, jewelry and
carvings. The show will also
include landscapes of the bay, its
tributaries and the surrounding
environments.
Paintings, prints and photography will be limited to two submissions no larger than 20”x30”
each, and there is no predetermined limit on three-dimensional
pieces. There is a $10 non-refundable registration fee per artist.
All art should be brought to the
Hugh Gregg Center on Wednesday, November 5.
The fourth annual “Art of
Great Bay” art show is both a
fundraiser for the Great Bay
Stewards (to help continue their
sponsorship of the education
programs of the Great Bay Discovery Center, UNH research fellowships, and local high school
scholarships), as well as a chance
for local artist to display and sell
their works. The Stewards will
take a 30 percent commission on
all works sold. Entries will be
chosen by the committee.Applications may be picked up at the
Discovery Center, located at 89
Depot Road on the Greenland/
Stratham town line. Applications

call for artists
PORTSMOUTH | The Friends of
Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse have
issued a call to artists for their upcoming art show and sale, scheduled for
August 9-10. The theme of the show
is "The Beautiful Seacoast."
This show is open to artists of all
mediums, including painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, photography and mixed media. Each artist
will have one side of a 4’x8’ panel
to display artwork. The sale of both
original works and giclée (fine art/
archival) prints is encouraged.
There is a $20 entry fee for the show
and artists are required to donate
a portion of sales to the Friends of
Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse (30
percent minimum donation). The
proceeds will assist the Friends of
Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse in
purchasing paint and painting supplies for the lighthouse.
The Friends of Portsmouth Harbor
Lighthouse is a non-profit, all-volunteer group founded in 2001 as a
chapter of the American Lighthouse
Foundation. The group's mission is
to work for the preservation of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse in New
Castle to gather and preserve the
history of this important historic site
and to share these resources with the
public.

at the North Hampton Bandstand
continues with a great variety of
performances on Wednesday
nights. Coming up on Wednesday,
July 30, the Moose Mountain Jazz
Band (pictured) performs at the
bandstand for the first time ever. All
band concerts are free and open
to the public, although donations
are always gratefully accepted.

is invited to come aboard the M/V
“Thomas Laighton” at dockside and
visit the top deck to enjoy the best outdoor seats in Portsmouth, now that the
Isles of Shoals Steamship Company has
brought back the Captain’s Deck.
The Captain’s Deck is now open
on Wednesdays and Thursdays from
5-6:30 p.m. throughout the summer.
There will be signature drinks from the
Tiki Bar (including Captain’s Punch),
and admissions discounts on Wednesday evening “Rhythm on the River”
party ships from 7-10 p.m., featuring

Concerts benefit
Zimbabwe travelers
BRENTWOOD | Members of the
Resonance Chamber Ensemble will
present two different concerts of
classical music at on Thursday, July
31 and Friday, August 8 at 7 p.m.
at Pilgrim United Church of Christ,
located at 197 Middle Road (Route
111A) in Brentwood.
The Resonance Chamber Ensemble has been performing in the New
England area since 2004. The first
concert will feature Sue Hurwitz
on flute; Barbara Schwalbe, violin; Sue Soucy, soprano; and Lynne
Wilby, piano. The second concert
will feature Kim Farah, flute; Amanda Doiron, oboe; and Lynne Wilby,
piano.
Pilgrim Church is in partnership with Gwenzi United Church of
Christ in Zimbabwe. Members of the
church are making plans to welcome
several travelers from the Gwenzi
Church sometime in 2009. Donations received at these concerts will
be added to a newly-created travel
fund to cover the cost of the visitors'
airfare and visas.
A freewill offering will be gratefully accepted at the concert, and

this summer for Disney’s “Beauty
and the Beast.” Based upon the
1991 Disney film, this magical
production will be presented
at 7 p.m. on Thursdays and

stage at PPAF, located next to

of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse,
a chapter of the nonprofit American
Lighthouse Foundation, have launched
a raffle for a custom-made replica of
Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse in
New Castle.
The replica is on display and raffle
tickets ($1 each, six for $5) are on sale
at the Discover Portsmouth Center (the
former library) at the corner of Middle

first began, Corrine Brown says
“It’s great to have the opportunity” to be part of the band. “I
enjoy it very much. It’s wonderful that Tony does this so
that we can all get together and
enjoy the magic of making music
together as a group.”
Like Cyrus, Brown — who
first played the clarinet in fifth
grade — also keeps it in the family: Her son Blake, a WHS graduate, plays saxophone and her
sister Bonnie Demanche joined
the group last year on flute.
“It’s nice doing it as a family,” Brown says. “That’s what’s
really neat about the group: You
have a wide age group working
together [and] each age brings
their own piece to it. And of
course, Tony is a great band
director. He manages to keep
control and make it fun. It’s a
really pleasant, fun thing to do.
It’s good for everybody.”
And it’s been good for Brown
as well. “I hadn’t played in quite
a few years,” she says, “so to
start doing it again is frustrating in some ways, and fun and
amazing in other ways. A lot of
it comes back very quickly. We
all need to take on new challenges to keep ourselves young,
keep our minds working well.
It’s really fun.”
It’s fun for David Sheehy too,
who will be in Cyrus’ band class
as a WHS sophomore in the
fall.
“I love it because it’s seems
like it’s a step up from the Winnacunnet band — you have
to learn songs in a condensed
amount of time,” says Sheehy,
who takes on this annual musical challenge with gusto. A member of the Hampton Community
Band since he was a sixth grader
at Hampton Academy, Sheehy
plays saxophone and clarinet
(as well as piano and organ).
He adds he “definitely will stay
with the band” year after year,
and says being part of it is a
“great [and] rewarding experience.”
Audiences will find that this
year’s Summer Concert Series
will be a rewarding experience
as well. All concerts are free and
open to the public. Everyone
is invited to bring a lawn chair
or a blanket, have a seat and
relax to live concert band music
performed by the talented local
musicians in the Hampton Community Band.

imagined, yet it happened.
This week marks the
63rd anniversary of the USS
Indianapolis, which was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine on July 30, 1945 in
the Pacific Ocean. More than
1,000 troops aboard were
cast into the sea, and nearly
two-thirds of those perished
to attacks by swarming
sharks, as they drifted perilously for days while awaiting a rescue.
It’s the stuff that Hollywood’s finest could hope to
conjure, and it is because of
Hollywood that many recall
the tragedy even today.
Unfortunately, the one
now-classic movie scene
that helped immortalize the
plight of the USS Indianapolis is littered with inaccuracies.
Most have probably forgotten the abysmal 1991
made-for-TV flick, “Mission of the Shark: The Saga
of the USS Indianapolis,”
that starred Richard (“John
Boy” from the “Waltons”)
Thomas.
That movie was supposed to tell the “true” story
of the USS Indianapolis sinking, but was plagued with
plenty of historical errors of
its own. For example, the
rescue plane that lands to
fish the surviving sailors
from the water was a Grumman Albatross, a plane that
didn’t come into service
until years after the war. The
actual plane that rescued the
men in the water was a Catalina PBY.
However, what most
folks likely bring to mind
when linking Hollywood to
the USS Indianapolis is a
key scene in the 1975 film,
“Jaws.”
Two-thirds of the way
into the film, the three lead
characters, Chief Brody,
played by Roy Scheider,
Hooper played by Richard
Dreyfuss, and Quint played
by Robert Shaw, are spending a quiet moment together
drinking below-deck of the
“Orca” fishing boat, after a
day of unsuccessfully hunting the killer great white
shark.
After being asked about
a scar on his arm, Quint
delivers a monologue about
how the scar was a tattoo
which was removed — a
tattoo that depicted the USS
Indianapolis.
Stunned curious, Hooper
and Brody want to hear his
tale. So Quint told the following story in the film:
“Japanese submarine
slammed two torpedoes
into her side, Chief. We was
comin' back from the island
of Tinian to Leyte. We'd just
delivered the bomb. The
Hiroshima bomb. Eleven
hundred men went into the
water. Vessel went down in
12 minutes.
”Didn't see the first shark
for about a half-hour. Tiger.
13-footer. You know how
you know that in the water,
Chief? You can tell by lookin'
from the dorsal to the tail.
What we didn't know, was
that our bomb mission was
so secret, no distress signal
had been sent. They didn't
even list us overdue for a
week. Very first light, Chief,
sharks come cruising by, so
we formed ourselves into
tight groups. It was sorta
like you see in the calendars, you know the infantry
squares in the old calendars
like the Battle of Waterloo
and the idea was the shark
come to the nearest man,
that man he starts pounding and hollering and sometimes that shark he go away,
but sometimes he wouldn't
go away.
”Sometimes that shark
looks right at ya. Right into
your eyes. And the thing
about a shark is he's got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a
doll's eyes. When he comes
at ya, he doesn't even seem
to be living, 'til he bites ya,
and those black eyes roll
over white and then... ah
then you hear that terrible
high-pitched screaming. The
ocean turns red, and despite
all your pounding and your
hollering those sharks come
in and ... they rip you to
pieces.
”You know by the end
of that first dawn, lost a
hundred men. I don't know
how many sharks there
were, maybe a thousand. I
do know how many men,
they averaged six an hour.
Thursday morning, Chief,
I bumped into a friend of
mine, Herbie Robinson from
Cleveland. Baseball player.
Boson's mate. I thought he
was asleep. I reached over
to wake him up. He bobbed
up, down in the water, he
was like a kinda top. Upended. Well, he'd been bitten in
half below the waist.
”At noon on the fifth day,
a Lockheed Ventura swung
in low and he spotted us,
a young pilot, lot younger
than Mr. Hooper here. Anyway, he spotted us and a few
hours later a big ol' fat PBY
come down and started to
pick us up. You know that
was the time I was most
frightened. Waiting for my
turn. I'll never put on a
lifejacket again. So, eleven
hundred men went into the
water,

in the script. It gave the film
a powerfully-delivered axis
on which the entire plot
spins, and is considered by
many to be one of the greatest monologues in the history

Multicultural camp explores ‘Route to Peace’
KINGSTON | The Southern District YMCA and the
Exeter and Manchester Rotary
Clubs have joined Camps for
Diversity to help local children
facilitate friendships across
cultures through a camp pilot
program called “Friendship:
The Route to Peace.”
This will be a comprehensive, multicultural camp
experience for American
middle-school age boys from
Exeter and Manchester and
their classmates who are refugees and immigrants from
many different cultures.
The camp will be held
at YMCA Camp Lincoln in
Kingston on the weekend of
August 15-17. The following
week, on Saturday, August 23,
the campers will bring their
families back to Camp Lincoln
for a family camp day so parents can meet their sons’ new
friends and families and begin
more friendships across cultures.The families will bring
an ethnic dish from home for
a multicultural potluck and
have the opportunity to share
their cultural customs and traditions with each other.
There has been a large
influx of refugee and immigrant families from widely
diverse cultures, speaking
as many as 135 different
languages, entering New
Hampshire. This has created
this perfect opportunity for
schoolchildren and their families to learn about each other’s
diversity firsthand and, more
importantly, make cross-cultural friendships within their
communities.
With a mutually compatible vision to build strong kids,
strong families and strong
communities, YMCA Camp
Lincoln was a good match
with Rotary International,
well-known for its longstanding work to build goodwill
and peace in the world. Camp
Lincoln is providing free
use of the camp, transporta-
tion for the campers to and
from the camp, a lifeguard,
a ropes course expert and a
cook. Members of both Exeter
and Manchester Rotary Clubs
will be offering their services
to provide an old fashioned,
“all-American” outdoor barbeque for the campers’ first
evening meal. All other meals
will be of different campers’
countries of origin.
Each cabin will have a
trained American and refugee, immigrant or international counselor to guide
and support their campers in
developing new friendships
and gain greater inter-cultural
understandings through open
dialogs and role modeling.
The campers will prepare and
participate in customs, songs,
dancing, musical instruments
and traditions to celebrate the
various cultures of the campers. Other camp activities will
include swimming, boating,
sports, games and archery.
The pilot includes a similar
camp experience for teachers
and local refugee and immigrant community leaders to
learn ways to guide respect
and empathy across cultures
within the classroom and
community.
There are camps that
offer conflicting groups (such
as Israelis and Palestinians)
ways to build peace, and
other camps that provide outdoor camping experiences for
minorities and international
students, but very few offer
the opportunity for American
children to attend a widely
diverse multicultural camp
with children from other
countries.

“Dancing Carnival”
was famous beach landmark

‘cageys’), so handsome in
their wide bottom gray flannels-plus fours (or even plus
eights) worn with colored
argyle type golf hose and
suck-like apparel. (No ragged
jeans in those days!) The girls
wore short dresses, short
hair but curly, and rolled silk
stockings (not yet nylon) and
fancy garters to keep them
up. When the nights were
hot, the management opened
the windows on the ocean
side and delicious breezes
wafted over the dance floor.
Murphy’s Orchestra was
very good always, but the
greatest attraction was Mal
Hallet on a Saturday night.
We all thrilled to the music of
Mal Hallet and when he went
into his feature, the band
would demonstrate such
pieces as “Horses, Horses,
Horses” accompanied by the
members standing up and
riding hobby horses (which
now seems more corny than
it was). Also, they played
and acted out ‘Collegiate,
Collegiate, Yes, We Are Collegiate ....’. This called for a
freshman cap and a crazy
outfit. Others, too, but I
forget. One piece I remember particularly, was called
‘After The Storm’. Then the
music would roar, the lights
would go out and all was
dark until the make-believe
storm was upon us and the
‘lightning’ would flash while
the lights would go on and
off and the roar of the music
was really something! But
not even then as loud as the
The “DANCE CARNIVAL LTD.” was a familiar
landmark on Rocky Bend at
Hampton Beach from 1921
until it burned in 1929. It was
a place where one could go
on Saturday night and dance
to the music of well-known
bands of the day. On the
ground floor there were concessions with the spacious
and glamourous dance hall
on the second floor above.
A few years ago,
this writer received a very
interesting letter together
with a dance ticket from the
days of the Dance Carnival.
On the ticket was printed
the following message:
“DANCE CARNIVAL -Hampton Beach -- Good For
One Dance - Seven (7) cents.
The Management reserves
the right to refuse admission
to the floor of any objectionable person.”
Included in the letter was the following reminiscence from the days of the
Dance Hall from Elizabeth
M. Horton of 663 Main Street,
Haverhill, MA. who had this
to say regarding her remembrance of the Big Band Days:
“I remember that
dance hall as a place of pure
glamor! We girls of towns 10
or 15 miles away seemed to
make it every night during
the summer. In my crowd,
someone had a car. The
dance floor was so beautiful,
the fellows (we called the
best and most attractive ones
music the grandchildren are
accustomed to today. We
were the innocent ones. (And
WE were called the ‘roaring
twenties’!) Anyway, sometimes, I realize we danced all
evening without taking any
money except just enough to
get in and maybe some of us
had a few dimes or a quarter
or two in our pocket. Often
not, that I’m sure. We would
just breeze in and would get
a partner immediately. Sometimes, he would be someone
we knew and sometimes he
would be new. From then
on, we seemed to have every
dance. Now and then, somebody went ‘beaching’, for a
little while.”
And so it was at
the Dancing Carnival back
in the “Roaring Twenties” at
Hampton Beach on Rocky
Bend. Peter E. Randall’s
“HAMPTON: A Century
of Town and Beach, 1888
- 1988” had this to say
regarding the Dance Carnival: “....... On the site of the
Winnicumet House, Thomas
Leavitt’s sons, Thomas and
Joseph Leavitt built a large
hotel that opened in 1872
and remained for 49 years
until torn down to make
way for the construction of
the DANCE CARNIVAL (in
1921). Known as the Hampton Beach Hotel, but usually
called Leavitt’s, this building
was four stories high with
a three-story ell and a 10foot wide veranda. It was
advertised as having ocean
views from every room and
its construction had a ripple
effect as the nearby Boar’s
Head Hotel was enlarged
and refurbished to remain
competitive.”

boundaries, so native plants

strangled, choked, shaded
out or toppled by invasive
shrubs, vines and trees," says
GBNERR Land Stewardship
Coordinator, Rachel Stevens.
"This workshop is a chance to
learn how to identify invasive
plants and alternatives for
replacing them. By removing
invasive plant species, you
can help protect and restore
the ecological integrity of
New Hampshire's coastal
watershed," an area which
spans 42 towns in Strafford
and Rockingham counties.
During the workshop,
participants will learn how
to identify the most common
invasive plants and overview
both chemical and pesticidefree options for their removal. The session will explain
the best removal techniques
for conditions specific to
one’s yard, and suggest species that could be planted as
an alternative to invasives.
It also will provide an overview of potential funding
sources and tool loan pro-
grams available to support
these efforts.

The first installation of the
flashing left arrow on a traffic signal in New Hampshire
was installed northbound on
NH Route 3A in Bow at the
intersection of Hall Street and
Interstate 89, also known as
Bow Junction. Initial observations indicate that motorists
are pausing more than previously when they just saw a
green circle, officials say.
In fact, a national study
found that drivers made
fewer mistakes with the new
flashing yellow arrow signals
than with traditional green
ball signals. The new signals
also give traffic engineers
more options to handle traffic
volumes.
According to a memorandum issued by the Federal Highway Administration
allowing the interim use of
flashing left arrows, motorists
“intuitively knew what the
flashing yellow arrow meant”
and “responded strongly and
favorably to the concept with
little or no public information.”

new light flashing before their
eyes.
The New Hampshire
Department of Transportation
(NHDOT) has joined other
states in being among the first
in the country to implement
a new flashing yellow arrow
left-turn signal light at intersections.
The flashing yellow arrow
directs motorists to turn left
after yielding to oncoming
traffic, which has a green
light. Currently a green circle
conveys this message, typically with a corresponding
sign that indicates “Left Turn
Yield on Green Circle.”

is in response to longstanding
concerns by traffic engineers

29th, 1945.” He missed the
mark by a month and a day,
since, according to the US
Navy, the USS Indianapolis
was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine shortly after
midnight on July 30, of the
same year.
Another error in the
speech is that the ship was
“coming back from the
island of Tinian to Leyte,”
indicating that the ship was
en route to Leyte. In fact, the
USS Indianapolis, after dropping off the mechanisms for
the atomic bomb at Tinian,
was on the way to the Philippines when attacked.
Quint’s speech explains
how the sinking wasn’t listed overdue “for a week.” In
fact, the ship wasn’t listed as
missing at all, due to a snafu
in communications, and the
men drifted for four days
— not five, as is stated in the
film — before being accidentally spotted by a pilot of a
PV-1 Ventura bomber who
was on a routine anti-submarine mission, and radioed
back that there were “many
men in the water.”
Quint states that 1,100
men went into the water and
316 men came out, while the
sharks “took the rest.” The
US Navy states that there
were 1,196 men onboard the
USS Indianapolis. It’s estimated that roughly 300 were
killed in the attack, leaving
the rest to fight for their lives
in the sea.
In the end, 316 (317
depending on the source)
were pulled from the water,
although several of those
died later at the hospital of
wounds sustained.
It remains the worst
Naval disaster in US history.
Hollywood helped keep
the story in the limelight
with a glossy speech, but it
is the true tale of what happened that keeps it alive in
the hearts of Americans.

program provided a great chance to read an old favorite or
perhaps something new, but it’s also an opportunity to take
part in some exciting activities.

Committee hosts open art studios
EXETER | The Exeter Arts Committee is currently hosting a
very friendly Open Studio and Painting Club. No experience
is needed; all mediums and all levels from teens and up are

they’ve kept me running
since then”), and has been
lacing up her running shoes
for most of her life.
“When I was really little
(age 4-5) I used to run 5K
road races,” she says. “I
used to run them, not just
walk them. I actually jogged
them. I don’t do as many
these days but back then
we’d do them 3-4 times a
summer.”
Her most recent race, a
1600m event, was last week
at Livingston Park in Manchester. Acknowledging that
“it just feels good to finish
from a hard run,” Devinne
says that her performance at
the Hershey Track and Field
Regionals “felt good because
it was my best time.”
And while she admits “I
didn’t know if I was going
[to the Finals] or not — I
wasn’t really thinking about
it then,” Devinne reveals
that “when we were looking
at the times from the other
states it got my hopes up.”
Naturally she was thrilled
with the final results.
Currently in the midst
of a set training schedule
for the Finals in Hershey,
Devinne is well aware that
the Pennsylvania city is
famous for one of her most
favorite treats: Chocolate.
She jokes that Hershey Bars
and Hershey Kisses will fit
in just fine with her training.
“I’ll have to be eating
pretty well so I’ll have a lot
of strength, and I really like
chocolate,” Devinne says.
“You’re going to be burning
all the carbs anyway; might
as well eat all the chocolate
you want!” she laughs.
Perhaps one of the people closest to Devinne’s
athletic achievements is her
father, Jeff Cullinane, who
has coached the Hershey
Track and Field program for
Hampton Rec for about 15
years.
Naturally he’s thrilled
for his local athletes in general and his daughter in particular.
“It’s been exciting,
because every year we have
a relay team or two and a
couple of individuals that
usually win in the state
meet,” he says. “Hershey is
a great program; it’s a great
grassroots meet and I’ve
always enjoyed doing it.”
As a coach, he says that
he is “ecstatic” that Hampton is sending an athlete
to represent the town at
the finals in Hershey. And
as Devinne’s father, he
observes, “At this age we
don’t push results, and so
it wouldn’t have been a big
deal if she didn’t go down.”
That said, Cullinane does
affirm that his daughter “is
competitive. You don’t get
there without being competitive. I’m hoping she’ll
be able to run a really fast
time. Whether she runs fastest or on the coat-tails of
other person, it should be a
really great race.”
Still, he says, the Cullinanes are prepared to “go
down with the attitude, ‘Do
your best and whatever you
get will be great.’ It will
be the experience that will
matter.’”
It’s an experience that
Devinne is surely looking
forward to, and she’s on the
same page as her dad as far
as good sportsmanship is
concerned.
“I really don’t care if I
win or lose,” says the aspiring Olympian. “I’m just
really happy to be going …
and I wouldn’t pass up this
opportunity for anything
else.” Besides, she says, “I
just want to go down there
and eat chocolate!”
Between
competing,
sightseeing and chocolate-indulging throughout
the four-day excursion, it
should be a real sweet time
at the Hershey’s Track and
Field Games North American Final for both father and
daughter.
“I couldn’t be prouder;
I’m really excited she made
it because she really works
hard,” says Cullinane. “We
want it to be fun and to
have a good time. And if
she doesn’t win,” he adds
with a laugh, “she can walk
home!”

and former trial attorney, will be the featured presenter
for the next Bay Views summer program, scheduled for

to block his view.
Action on these propositions is essential to success and contrary to the
liberals’ laments that “it
will take too many years.”
The effects of such actions
will be felt in oil producing
countries immediately and
their reactions will be to
protect themselves by loosening tightened practices
and lowering prices hoping
we will once again go back
to sleep and let them once
again run away with our
wallets.
A fool’s mission is to
ignore these warnings and
go on vacation, and Congress overflows with fools.

was known oil there they’d
drill, but Congressional liberals won’t let them drill
where the oil IS!
Speculators are also a
blight on our landscape and
they should be eliminated.

KENSINGTON | Members of the Kensington American
Legion Auxiliary will be taking a bus trip to Foxwoods on
Thursday, August 21.
The cost for this trip is $35 per person (receive $25 back
from Foxwoods on arrival). The cost includes $15 for
Keno and a $10 food ticket.
Participants will play Bingo on the way down and there
will be a raffle to win $25 worth of scratch tickets. On the

If the United States is to
survive it will have to win
many battles in the coming years: Terrorism from
Islamic fanatics; restoration
of faith in God and dismantling of anti-Christian organizations the likes of the
ACLU; and tighter controls
on run-amok labor unions
that would eliminate free
speech of workers they control, are just a few needing
our attention and correction.
But one very big battle
that we MUST attack headon IMMEDIATELY, is the
ever-growing debilitation
of oil. Yes, OIL! We will not
survive the way things are
going in this country today.
Just about everything in
our society and every day
living is dependent to some
degree on petroleum based
products.
Middle Eastern sheiks
and mullahs as well as
despotic dictators in small
countries get richer by the
day mainly on the obscene
profits of the oil they sell
to this country. Then they
use our money to support
terrorists. So in essence,
through our oil purchases, we finance the attacks
against us. That is not only
stupid, it is suicidal.
And while all these foreign tyrants are living in
the lap of luxury the average American is struggling
with higher and higher
prices in just about anything you can mention, all
related to the high oil costs.
I personally have had to
seriously cut back all of my
charitable donations.
Gone are my gifts to the
Boy Scouts, Girls and Boys
Town, Red Cross, Salvation Army, Easter Seals and
10,000 other organizations
that are worthy of donations for the work they do.
With the high-flying price
of oil dictating the expenditures of my fixed income
that does not proportionally rise, I am forced to ration
most everything I do.
So what can we do?
EVERYTHING, and then
some, to break the hammerlock the oil cartels of the
world have on our necks.
Congressional intransigence in the form of stalling
liberal Democrats who keep
making excuses in order to
succor their environmentalist donors has got to cease.
Can you believe that the
Speaker of the House of
Representatives actually
said that she would not
allow any discussions on
drilling for American oil
until AFTER the House
comes back from a 30-day
break beginning August 1?
