atthews Hall Will Celebrate
100 Years in 2018
The Best Birthday Gift Will Be 100% of
Our Students Under One Roof by 2018
Since 1918, when
Kate Matthews
founded our
school with a few
little students,
Matthews Hall has
evolved to 250
students through the determination
of like-minded teams of people who
have bravely championed the cause
of establishing a successful private
school in London. Matthews Hall
has withstood the winds of time and
has achieved the distinction of being
the longest-standing
independent school in London. This
unique school deserves a permanent
building to mark its place in history
and to accommodate its students,
faculty, staff and families properly.
We are stimulated by the grand vision
that Matthews Hall will celebrate our
centennial in 2018 under one roof.
To accomplish this goal, we
need ideas and people who ~
• are motivated by the desire to
put 100% of our students
under one roof
• embrace new ideas and
innovations to advance our
school
• can fire the interests of others
to expand our building
• can inspire generous
donations and financial
strategies to make the
addition possible.
We look forward to your
assistance in our ardent quest
to put 100% of our students
under one roof by the time
Matthews Hall is 100 years old
in 2018.
Sincerely,
Patricia A. Doig

“Paying it Forward”
To ensure that Matthews
Hall continues to provide the best
opportunities for our students,
families and staff, the Board of
Governors engaged in strategic
planning to develop a footprint
to year 2015. The next few years
will prove to be both exciting and
challenging for the school.
To fully realize this strategic plan,
we need to ensure that resources
are available beyond the operational
revenues derived from tuition. Capital
projects such as building expansion
will require support from donations
from people who believe in the value
of Matthews Hall.
A Message from the Chair
of the Board of Governors
The school hosts fundraising events
such as the new Holly & Ivy shopping
market in November as well as The
Annual Dinner Auction being held on
June 4 this year. The Annual Giving
Appeal increases our fiscal revenues
to enrich our programs. We mount
capital campaigns from time-totime to support major projects. All
donations receive a tax receipt from
our recently-founded Advancement
Centre headed by Suzanne Fratschko
Elliott from the class of 1977.
We have all worked hard to build a
strong foundation for Matthews Hall.
For today’s children and for future
generations of children to stand

Diane Quartel chose an excerpt from
a longer piece by this writer in grade
5. The story is titled “The Quest of the
Eastern Crystal”. Diane liked the use
of detail through word choice in the
story, enabling the reader to see the
setting and feel the emotions of
the characters.
Ida was an orphan and lived
in the care of her grouchy
godmother, Ursula McGell. Days
with Ms. McGell were dreary,
drafty and dreaded. Ms. McGell
spent her days drinking tea
and insuring that Ida was busy
practicing her times tables.
The two lived in a very large
and expensive vintage mansion
where Ursula held dreary
tea parties every
Saturday and Sunday
afternoon…

An appreciation of family
from Grade 8:
The Meaning of Home
I am so lucky that the last
sounds I hear at night and the
first sounds I hear as I awaken
from my sleep are the sounds of
birds singing, trees rustling and
the pond trickling in my back
yard. As I lie listening to this
quiet comfort I am surrounded
by my cozy bed covers and my
favourite worn blanket. More
often than not my furry puppies
are snuggling with me, enjoying
the peace as well. I begin my
day with loving hugs from my
mom and dad. There
is nothing better than
these feelings…
By Micayla
In Middle School children are more able to think things through in
their writing. Andy Cockbain was impressed by the depth of thought,
maturity of voice, and the fact that this grade 6 student voluntarily
related her own experiences to a character, in a novel study of
Hana’s Suitcase.
I am thankful for many things including shelter, food,
clothes and education, especially since many people
around the world sleep on streets, beg for food and clothes,
and can’t possibly afford an education, or adults won’t
let their children go to school. I am thankful that I have
everything I need, and feel safe and I’m cared for…

I am thankful for all the things we don’t need, like the newest
electronics or the coolest shoes... If no one had them or if everyone
had them the world would be at peace because everyone would
feel equal.
…even though Hana, had shelter, food, clothes, education,
friends and family before Hitler came into power, after he and
the Nazis took over, they confiscated everything Hana possessed
and valued…Hana’s peaceful, rich life before the Nazi’s
occupation was turned upside-down. And, as much as it
hurts me to say, I am thankful that I am not Hana.
By Keemia
By grades 7 and 8 writing becomes automatic and rather versatile.
Sometimes, there is even an individual writing style. Jo Boutros relishes
working with such writers, especially getting them to analyze and to express
their personalities. His assignments invite this.

To be able to juggle, you need to be able to stay focused,
organized, efficient, and accurate. I am juggling three things of
varying importance. Academics are my greatest priority. For this
I will need several skills, the most important being organization.
Balancing academics with my second passion, tennis, will be
a challenge. To win at tennis you require outstanding physical
fitness, mental toughness and the ability to focus continuously.
Music and drama demand emotional control and accuracy. On
the stage, you need to control your fears and insecurities while
you try to make the audience enjoy. Keeping a balance between
academics, athletics and drama requires expert juggling skills. It
is going to be a challenging year.
