(continued on back page) But I Have Promises to Keep and Miles to Go Before I Sleep PA I D Peoria, IL 61601 Permit No. 357 Non-Profit Organization US Postage Dear Friends, I have announced my plans to retire in January 2017. The BCHFS Board of Trustees has been informed of my decision and a search committee has been selected to find my replacement. Qualifying candidates can be referred to Board Chair, Lowell Huffstutler at [email protected]. One of the great privileges of being the Executive Director is getting to see all the precious lives who are touched by the ministries of BCHFS. It has been an honor to serve IL Baptists for the past 42 years. My relationship with Baptist Children’s Home began in the fall of 1972 when I volunteered to lead recreation activities. It didn’t take long to fall in love with the ministry and discover this is where God was leading me for full-time service. In addition to providing recreation activities, I was soon employed as a relief houseparent for a cottage of eight boys. In 1974, I completed my bachelor’s degree in recreation and was employed as the Activities Director. Six years later, I completed my Master of Social Work degree, worked as a therapist for a year and then became the Director of Residential Care. In 1995, I was selected as the Executive Director of the agency. Working at Baptist Children’s Home and Family Services has been one of the joys of my life. I have made great friendships among the staff, donors and the children and (continued on page 2) 1 (continued from page 1) But I Have Promises to Keep and Miles to Go Before I Sleep families we serve. My life has been blessed and forever changed by these relationships. Two men have been especially important to me through the years: Gordon Lantrip, Director of Residential Care (1968-1981), and Leon Talley, Director of Social Services and later Executive Director of the agency (1968-1995). Both have been my supervisor, friend and mentor. They saw potential in me as a young man, poured themselves into me and trusted I might fulfill that potential. I will be forever grateful for their teaching, trust and support. I t is hard not to love Spring. As the weather grows warmer, the streets around my neighborhood begin to fill with children riding bikes and playing ball. It’s so refreshing to watch them play and see how hopeful, innocent and full of dreams they seem to be. It is tragic to think about the fallen world we live in and how it has a sickening tendency to prey upon our children. This is a sad reality I have become very familiar with through my years of working for Baptist Children’s Home and Family Services. Consider Amber. She was very young when she witnessed a horrific act of domestic violence in her home. After being removed from that environment, she bounced around from family to family in the foster care system before coming to BCHFS. Amber’s tumultuous past has left her hesitant to trust anyone. As a result, she has a tendency to sabotage any new relationship—believing that everyone will eventually leave or hurt her. Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. - 1 Peter 4:8 It can be difficult to get close to Amber, but if you look beyond her tough exterior you realize that it’s children like her who need love the most. She desperately needs someone who will love her unconditionally and not shy away when her behavior is at its worst. She needs someone who will faithfully walk with her through her trials and earn her trust day-by-day. Amber needs someone to show her the love of Jesus. At BCHFS, children like Amber are our passion. Though her young life has already fallen victim to the sin and evil at work in this world, we have the priceless opportunity to confront those evils with the overwhelming love of Christ. This has been our approach to ministry for 97 years. It’s practiced throughout all our areas of service, which includes BCH Residential Care in Carmi; Angels’ Cove Maternity Center in Mt. Vernon; Pathways Counseling Offices in 10 Illinois communities; Safe Families for Children in homes across Southern Illinois; Cove Connection, our ministry to single mothers and their children in Mt. Vernon; adoptive homes around the state; and Latreia International, our orphan ministry in Uganda. 2014 was a challenging year for our ministry. We struggled with cash flow issues for much of the year. In October we were forced to close one of our group homes in Carmi to cut costs. With the need for our services continuing to grow, I am not satisfied to care for fewer people, and I sincerely hope you share my concern. As believers in Christ, we cannot afford to become complacent when it comes to the welfare of children and families. The lives of children like Amber are simply too important. This year, we need YOU more than ever. That is why I humbly ask that you give as generously as possible to the 2015 Mother’s Day Offering. Help our children understand that no matter what challenges they face, those challenges are no match for the victorious love of Christ! I have mixed emotions about retiring. It will be hard to leave a ministry that has been such an important part of my life, but I look forward to a slower pace, traveling with my wife Connie, and coming full circle to once again serve as a volunteer for BCHFS. As I think about retirement, I am reminded of a line from the Robert Frost poem, Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening: “But I have promises to keep and miles to go before I sleep.” There is still much to do before I retire. There are promises to keep in terms of increasing our income and providing the appropriate infrastructure to support the work of the agency; improving the quality of existing programs; and expanding our ability to care for children and families. There are many miles yet to drive between the network of churches and individual donors that make the ministry of Baptist Children’s Home and Family Services possible. I look forward to visiting with many of you over the next 20 months at our special events and through visits to your churches and homes. Thank you for the opportunities I have had over the years to partner with you in caring for the most vulnerable in our society. Carmi, IL 62821 BCHFS Welcomes New Development Team Members B CHFS would like to welcome Laurie Ingram and Mike Goodsell to our Development and Communications team. Laurie joined the BCHFS family in January and currently serves as the Northern IL Development Officer. As a pastor’s wife, and former missionary for 18 years with the International Mission Laurie Ingram (center) pictured with Board, Laurie brings a wealth her husband Clif, son-in law, Daniel of experience in communicating Wu, daughter Bethany Wu, sons Caleb with the local church. Laurie and Joel, daughter-in law Caroline and and her husband, Clif are the daughters, Sarah and Grace. parents of three biological children, two internationallyadopted children, and are former foster parents. Laurie has a burning passion to help others learn how they can be a part of God’s work by providing for the needs of children and helping to strengthen families. Laurie is a member of Lighthouse Fellowship in Frankfort, IL, where her husband Clif serves as Senior Pastor. In her free time she enjoys cooking, baking, sewing and reading. Mike, who is the new BCHFS Central IL Development Officer, is a life-long resident of Waterloo, IL where he resides with his wife Lisa of 23 years and their son, Lucas, a freshman in high school. They have an older son, Nathan. He is attending Lewis & Clark College in Godfrey, IL on a baseball scholarship. A Special Surprise for Our Volunteer of the Year A t BCHFS, we have made a tradition out of going to great lengths to surprise our award winners at our Annual Executive Director’s Dinner…It’s just more fun that way! This year, when we learned at the last minute that the individual we selected to receive our Hand-in-Hand Award could not attend our dinner, there was clearly only one thing we could do…surprise her at work! Our Hand-in-Hand Award is presented each year to an individual who has given generously of their time and talents to help BCHFS better care for children and families in need. This year’s recipient is Jenna Harner of Dongola, IL. Jenna has been an active volunteer and fundraiser for BCHFS and Angels’ Cove for a number of years. In 2010, Jenna combined her heart for helping children with her passion for pageantry and created the Annual Snow Angel Pageant, which is held each year at Shawnee Community College in Ullin, IL. All proceeds go to Angels’ Cove. The pageant provides young women with the opportunity to earn scholarships while learning things like interview skills, poise, confidence, etiquette. Through the years, the Snow Angel Pageant has raised nearly $15,000. Jenna serves as a mentor to the young queens and involves them in numerous service activities throughout the year at Angels’ Cove. Jenna is a math teacher at Massac County High School in Metropolis, IL. When we learned she would be unable to attend our Executive Director’s Dinner in April, the Executive Director went to her. Doug Devore and BCHFS Southern Development Officer, Paula Joy dropped in on Jenna’s afternoon math class to present her with the well-deserved award and a bouquet of flowers. Everything worked out wonderfully! We received the opportunity to honor a very special volunteer, and the students in her class didn’t mind having their math test interrupted. Mike comes to BCHFS with an extensive background in print advertising and marketing. He has worked in newspaper and direct mail advertising sales as well as business development in the IT industry. Mike also spent 22 years in the Army National Guard during which he made a combat deployment to Iraq. Mike Goodsell pictured with his wife, Lisa. “I gave my life to the Lord at 13 years of age, but after the very difficult and dangerous deployment in a combat zone, I decided it was time to be more of a follower of Christ and not just a fan. I spent the last two years of my military career training young people who were entering the military. I found that was where my heart was. I wanted to minister to young people because they are our future,” he explained. BCHFS Executive Director, Doug Devore, surprised 2015 Hand-inHand Award winner, Jenna Harner, by dropping by her classroom to present her with the award. Mike and his family attend HOPE Christian Church in Columbia, IL. He has been a member of the Gideon ministry for the past five years and served as the Chaplin for VFW Post 6504 for three years. Mike is also part of leadership in the men’s ministry at his church. In his spare time, Mike likes to watch his sons play baseball and go camping with his family. A M e s s a g e f r o m t h e E x e c u t i v e D i r e c t o r - s p e c i a l a N N U A L REPORT E D ITIO N “Let the redeemed of the Lord say so...” - PSALM 107:2 Dear friends, T he Psalmist David writes in Psalm 107:2 “Let the redeemed of the Lord say so…” We are to “say so” with our lives, our hearts, our voices, our time and our resources. We are to “say so” in our response to the needs of others. When we do, we reflect the heart of God. To provide Christ-centered services that protect, heal and restore. Thank you for your faithfulness during the year. Thank you for your prayers, your volunteer efforts and your financial support. Your support made a difference in the lives of hundreds of children and families in Illinois and hundreds more in Uganda. During the year, we provided care to 1,279 children and adults through our various Illinois-based ministries. While some areas of our service were slightly lower than 2013, our Safe Families for Children ministry and our Doug Devore, LSW Pathways Counseling ministry both grew. We also expanded Executive Director our aftercare services for Angels’ Cove clients through a partnership with Lifeboat Alliance, the homeless shelter in Mt. Vernon, IL. Our ministry to orphans outside of Illinois, Latreia International, included two mission teams to Bukaleba, Uganda to minister to Arise Africa International’s Babies’ Home and the villages that surround it. One team provided medical and vision care to more than 2,000 people and saw 150 professions of faith. The second team provided Bible school for children, maintenance work at the Babies’ Home, and training to local pastors and their wives. That team saw six children make professions of faith. Back at home, the Board of Trustees developed new bylaws for the agency and amended our Articles of Incorporation to maintain compliance standards for our not-for-profit status. They also worked with staff to develop a new Strategic Plan to guide the agency’s response to the critical issues it is facing now and anticipates over the next 3-5 years. These issues include changing cultural norms; the growing complexity of family problems and individual trauma; competition for services; insufficient income; litigation risks; staff and donor recruitment challenges; and retirement of key employees. In addition, we achieved Hague Accreditation for our intercountry adoption program through the Counsel on Accreditation as authorized by the U.S. Department of State. This accreditation signifies excellence in our program and guarantees that we meet standards for adoptions that protect children from abduction, exploitation, sale or trafficking. In a year of great accomplishments, there were also challenges. We experienced cash flow problems throughout the year caused by extraordinary employee medical costs and less than anticipated income. To counter this we reduced operating expenses by closing Staley Cottage, a group home on the Carmi campus, left vacant staff positions unfilled, and postponed all but the most critical capital improvement projects. These steps helped balance our budget, but they are not long-term solutions. We are not satisfied with serving fewer people, and we hope you agree that our mission is too important to just do that. We cannot afford to become complacent when it comes to the welfare of children and families. Operating Income $3,053,140 Income Operating BCHFS NEWS: Building Futures. Changing Lives. Our Central Tournament is unique because rather than paying an entry fee to play, our golfers raise fundraising support to participate in the tournament. Golfers seek corporate or private supporters who will help them reach their goal of raising $1,500 for the children in care at BCHFS. Last year, twelve fundraising golfers raised more than $19,000 in support! This year’s tournament takes place Saturday, June 6 at the beautiful Edgewood Golf Club in Auburn, IL. We are in need of fundraising golfers who will help us reach our goal of $25,000. Each golfer is asked to attempt to raise $1,500, but golfers will be permitted to play on their best fundraising effort. Golfers will compete individually. Prizes will be awarded for First Place, Second Place and Top Fundraiser. The tournament will also feature a Longest Drive, Closest to the Pin and Longest Putt competition. Each participant will receive a polo shirt, baseball cap and goodie bag. Lunch and continental breakfast will be provided. If you are not a golfer or are unable to participate, you can still help by supporting one of our current golfers or by making a financial contribution toward the tournament. The $25,000 we hope to raise though the Central IL Golf Tournament is equivalent to the amount it takes to feed a cottage of 8 residents for an entire year! For more information on how to take part, contact Ken Steward at (618) 978-2553 or email him at [email protected]. Residents Have a Ball at the 2015 Valentines Banquet R esidents and staff from BCH and Angels’ Cove came together for an evening of fun at the 2015 Valentines Banquet. It took place on Saturday, February 21, in the activities building on our Carmi campus. Each year, the residential care staff establishes a theme and meticulously plans this formal event to give our residents a fun and educational evening. This year’s theme was, “Innocence.” “We got the idea from Tina Musgrove, our administrative assistant,” said Nick Knight, the BCH Recreation Specialist. “She had a bunch of letters her grandfather had written her grandmother when they were courting. The letters were just so classy and endearing. That is definitely something we want to instill in our residents.” The annual Valentines Banquet is more than just an opportunity to get dressed up and dance the night away. In advance of the banquet, two office staff members went to each of our residential care cottages and hosted a “manners meal.” The staff demonstrated proper table manners and correct table placements. Residents also learned socially appropriate dancing skills, which they would have the opportunity to display at the banquet. The BCH Valentines Banquet provides a great opportunity for residents and staff to kick back and have fun. Whether they were dancing or just plain goofing off, a great time was had by all! On the night of the banquet attendees enjoyed a wonderful catered meal served by volunteers from Lebanon Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon, IL. Afterward, several residents and BCH staff began the evening festivities by performing a choreographed dance they had been practicing for weeks. Their routine was beautifully done and effectively broke the ice for the rest of attendees to join in. For many of our residents, the annual Valentines banquet is the first time in their lives they have had the opportunity to wear a tuxedo or ball gown! We want to thank all of those who made this special evening possible for our children. Special thanks to our residential care staff who created a “winter wonderland” in the gym and all those who donated formal wear, helped our girls do their hair and makeup and to the volunteers from Lebanon Baptist Church! For the festival to be a success, we need YOU. Can your church group provide a booth, demonstrate a craft, or donate items for the quilt or silent auctions? If your church has not had a booth before, this is the year to do it. You can play a game or make a simple craft. You can provide a snack. Do something different and give out school supplies, Christian books, toys, or Bibles. Your church group could do face painting, provide a snack, demonstrate a craft or create a fun game! Be creative and help us add excitement to the Christ-honoring, family atmosphere of Fall Festival! This year’s theme is “Victorious Love.” We hope you will give generously and encourage your church to participate in our Mother’s Day Offering. The funds we raise through this special appeal is essential to our yearly operating budget. Help us reach our 2015 fundraising goal of $265,000! (See article on page 2.) • Can someone from your church knit, crochet, do origami, or paint? Maybe they would like to share their skills with our visitors. Can someone tie fishing lures or do face painting or maybe blow bubbles with a hula-hoop? Whatever you can do that would be of interest to our visitors would be great. The 16th Annual Festival will take place on Saturday, September 19, at the Carmi Campus of Baptist Children’s Home and Family Services. The Festival will begin at 10 a.m. Booths must be set up and ready to go by 9:30 a.m. and would need to remain open until after the quilt auction ends (approximately 2 p.m.). Please consider what your church group can do to help ensure this year’s Fall Festival is a success. There is no cost to anyone—even lunch is free. The quilt auction and the silent auction provide a significant amount of funding for the year so your help is imperative. If your church would like to participate, please contact Nancy Wall at (618) 382-4164, ext. 101 or by email at [email protected]. (continued from page 1) Each of us have past experiences that others may not understand, but we all go to God just as we are. David came to our church out of desperation, and now he and his family are part of our fellowship. I thank God for the experience we have had with this wonderful family. That is why our church is committed to Safe Families! • SAFE FAMILIES VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Contact Roger Balfour, Safe Families for ChildrenSouthern IL Coordinator at (618) 382-4164, ext. 104.
