GAC Member Julianna (Julie) Batizy-Morley is a selfdescribed “adrenaline junkie”. At 34, she balances the roles of wife, mother, national-level competitive triathlete, and ER physician surprisingly well. Julie is very humble about her achievements, and says that, “she feels fortunate to have come from a family that works hard to overcome obstacles”. Julie joined GAC in 2001 and enrolled her two daughters, Gabrielle (9) and Olivia (6) in the Greenwood Tiger Sharks competitive swim program. Julie was a competitive swimmer in high school (coached by her father) and at Ohio State, as well. She dropped out of the sport to “focus on medical school”, finishing as valedictorian of her class at Ohio University in four years. Julie has since returned to swimming, and more. Gregory Zgliczynski, world-class triathlete and Silver coach of the Greenwood Tiger Sharks, became Julie's open-water swimming coach two years ago, and her triathlon coach one year ago this fall. What started as “participating in a few road races and 1-2 mile open swims in college”, grew to a real interest in “serious triathlon training” for Julie under Gregory's influence. In her first competitive triathlon season, Julie took 1st overall age group/1st overall women in America's Tri (Austin), 3rd in age group in the Boulder Peak, and 2nd overall/1st in age group in the Sky Bank Tri (in her hometown of Cleveland, OH). She placed 4th in her age group at Nationals, but was bumped to 8th place due to a two-minute penalty. This cost her a spot as a direct qualifier for Worlds (the top 6 were taken; she is currently an alternate), and a change in her AllAmerican ruling overall. However, Julie qualified for All-American status for the year and was named 27th out of approximately 1200 athletes in her age group on the USA National Tri ranking. Not bad for a first season! Julie's biggest challenge in her fitness training is finding time for everything. She participates in indoor cycling, pilates, yoga, swimming, lifting weights, as well as outdoor cycling and running. Julie and her husband, Mike, who is an orthopedic trauma specialist and her “#1 fan”, also meet with GAC personal trainer Steve Mach once a week to work toward specific goals. Despite a rotator cuff injury last year, Julie didn't miss one day of swimming, thanks to Steve and Mike Keirns, lead P.T. for Physiotherapy and Associates. Julie says that success came from Steve working on maintaining core body and leg strength while Mike worked to heal her shoulder. A new challenge Julie faces is the discovery of PEs (pulmonary embolisms - blood clots in her lungs), a warning sign of an underlying condition. Julie says her genetics are “a challenge” in regard to good health; conditions such as lupus run in her family. Her doctor is doing more testing for a possible underlying connective tissue disorder. As a result of the PEs, Julie is experiencing a 5-10% decrease in pulmonary function. Her doctor is predicting 1-2 years until she'll be “completely recovered”. Within 2 weeks of her diagnosis, Julie was back in the water, taking only 8 weeks off until returning to “serious aerobic activity”. Within 5 months, she was back to 18 hours/week of swimming, biking, and running and one hour of personal training with Steve. Her first major race since this diagnosis was Mother's Day weekend, in Phoenix. She placed 3rd overall for women out of approximately 100 Olympicdistance competitors. Returning to racing on this particular weekend only seems appropriate, for above all else, Julie feels her biggest and best accomplishment is, “being a mom”. Julie states that the best thing about GAC is the supportive network she's found here. She feels a sense of community within the club that allows her to enjoy companionship, support, celebration of achievements, and group encouragement. We are proud to have Julie as a member and role model for fitness and health at GAC! P-Note, A message from the General Manager! In my service to you, my member, I will do everything in my power to make your group exercise experience the best it can be. My position is one of service to my members and support to my group exercise staff. Our membership includes a variety of fitness levels, ages and personalities. Fulfilling each members specific needs is a very difficult challenge, so I strive to make decisions that fit the needs of the majority. My goal is to offer you the best instructor in the best time slot for your attendance and enjoyment. My instructors and I want to make your time in class fun, challenging and enjoyable. Maintaining rooms and equipment is also part of my job description and I know that equipment failure can make or break a class. The minute I am informed of a problem, I initiate steps to resolve it. Sometimes that involves calling in help from within the club and sometimes it requires going to an outside source, such as our stereo support, Muzak. They come out, assess the problem and repair or replace broken equipment as quickly as possible. All our stereo units are used repeatedly through the day and take a beating, so occasionally they may malfunction. Please know that I read and respond to all your comment forms and emails. Thank you for your loyalty to GAC and for volunteering so many hours of knowledge and insight. Your fellow members should be honored and grateful to have such amazing people representing their interests and desires. Thank you! Gerard A. “Jerry” Maglio “I always felt it was a privilege to be a MAC participant, and am thankful for having been chosen to be one of its original members. Getting to know the staff and other MAC members better was deeply appreciated, as was the sense of community that evolved. I will truly miss my participation, remember my involvement fondly, and stand ready if called on to assist the GAC or new MAC in any way possible. Thank you for two great years!” Tom Melton "It has been instrumental in more than just my physical well-being. It has been influential in my whole life through relationships. GAC has become like a family to me and my family." Jean Runyon “I learned more than I contributed, and that is a regret. I was stimulated and honored to be among the management and business teams to gain an understanding of the behind-the-scenes workings and their united effort to be the best a family oriented athletic club could attain. I loved my time here, especially my learning experiences with tennis and aquatics. Peggy will always hold a special place.” Lynda Rehg “It has been the highlight of almost 18 years at GAC for me to be on the Member Advisory Committee. It has meant making new friends that I shall always cherish. It has been a commitment that I was honored to make. When I looked around our conference room at every meeting I have never seen more energy and spirit. I learned how to look at our club from the inside out; from management eyes to member eyes. I feel so honored to have had the opportunity to serve on such a committee. I love GAC and all that is has to offer. I hope that in some small way I have helped it grow into a positive experience for everyone. Thanks for the memories….” Hank Lewis “As a charter member it gave me a great deal of personal satisfaction to be on the Member Advisory Board. The most current and complete information on all of our programs can be found on our web site at www.greenwoodathleticclub.com JUNIOR SUMMER PROGRAMS You may have watched a professional match on television and thought; my strokes don't look anything like the strokes I see the pros utilizing on television. You won't believe it, but there has been an evolution occurring right behind your back in to what is known in the industry as “Modern Tennis”. Never heard of it? Don't feel bad, the mechanics and methods by which the game is being taught at many clubs around the world, particularly in the United States, and what the pros are actually doing is often two different stories. Unfortunately, many tennis instructors are former players who teach mechanics that were taught to them back when they were a kid even though it may not be anything close to how they actually hit a ball themselves. Traditional methodology is very prevalent throughout our industry; the same technical methods that coaches used 60 years ago are still common place. So far there are only a handful of clubs in the country who have embraced teaching modern tennis techniques, why? Many coaches are either too set in their ways, they don't feel they understand modern tennis well enough to teach it, or they are only willing to teach modern techniques to advanced players. Good news! The staff at Greenwood is well versed in all of the techniques of the modern game. The truth is that anyone can learn and benefit from modern techniques. If your game has hit a plateau, learning a few of these simple techniques could be the key. You will expand your range of shots, hit with more power utilizing less effort, become more consistent and dramatically reduce your exposure to injuries. We have had tremendous success teaching modern tennis to beginners through advanced players in all age groups from five to seventy-five! What is modern tennis? Modern tennis incorporates a variety of swing paths adaptable to high and low contact points combined with various footwork patterns. This in turn leads to greater shot selection, increased fire power and more consistency through the use of spin. The bottom line is that learning to play better is more fun! If you are interested in learning how to play like the pros, simply give us a call at (303) 771-2588. I look forward to seeing you out on the courts soon! Pilates is a systematic, total-body conditioning form of exercise comprised of a series of effective movements that strengthen your back, flatten your abs, improve your posture, stretch your hamstrings and entire spine, open up your chest, and organize your whole body. Because of these results, men and women of all ages and fitness levels are catching on. Pilates was once a cottage industry and has now exploded into mainstream fitness. As Pilates grew in popularity the demand for instructors increased and more educational programs were developed – some that altered the traditional Pilates method. With this boom lies the danger of unqualified Pilates teachers. Greenwood Athletic Club’s Pilates instructors continue to deliver the Pilates method as Joseph Pilates designed it to be taught. We teach a systematic, sequential order of exercises with transitions to maintain stamina and endurance. What distinguishes our Pilates studio from other studios is our teaching experience, expertise, and level of certification. All of our Pilates Instructors are classically trained and certified and have years Comfort Specialists of teaching experience. The majority of our instructors completed training through Peak Pilates, a fitness-based, systematic and integrated classical training program. The remainder of our instructors studied at the Pilates Center in Boulder, another top notch certifying program. Now, the majority of our instructors have achieved multiple Pilates certifications (including Polestar Education), have apprenticed with master trainers, and have passed written and practical exams. Greenwood Athletic Club is a member of the Pilates Method Alliance (PMA), the governing body of Pilates. Greenwood’s Pilates program is based on the PMA’s recommendations. Pilates may be practiced in a group or private setting. Price ranges from $15 for a group reformer session, to $65 for one hour of private instruction. Our members also have full access to our COMPLIMENTARY mat classes offered 6 days a week. Greenwood Athletic Club continues to offer specialized programs and seminars to meet your individual needs. Look for our upcoming workshops like Pilates for golfers, Pilates for runners, and Pilates for two! We recommend you practice Pilates at least 2-3 times weekly in 55 minute long sessions. It is the repetition that creates lasting effects and is what is required to get the results you seek. After considerable practice and repetition, your body will establish well-developed movement patterns. By following the classical method consistently, your body will learn through movement and, in doing so, will imprint permanent muscle-memory that is necessary for change. The result will be an improved body, better health, and vitality. I hope to see you soon in our studio, choosing Pilates as your platform for success. Pilates training options: Single, Semi-Private, Trio and Quad. Classes: Reformer, Pole/combo, Small Group Mat, Chair and Master. MARCH 2005 Jorge Fernandez Swim Team Head Coach Jorge was born in Santiago, Chile and has lived in Colorado since 1976. He is a graduate of the University of Colorado with majors in both Kinesiology and Spanish. Involved in swimming since he was a young child, Jorge has been involved in competing and coaching at local, national, and international levels. As a result of his coaching, many (probably hundreds) of swimmers of all ages have achieved great accomplishments from the local level to world competition. Many of Jorge's high school swimmers go on to compete on scholarship at the college level. When not near a pool, Jorge enjoys biking, hiking, camping, photography, and his 1 year old yellow lab named Azucar, which is “Sugar” in Spanish. He belongs to the Colorado Velo / Denver Spoke bike racing team. Other information on Jorge: In his own words, “I love ice cream from Bonnie Brae and I'm a sucker for rice and a great piece of steak.” A. Q. My child is serious about their sport, so should they perform adult-type endurance training in reduced quantities, or should they be performing a different type of training that is tailored to their physiology? Science suggests that developing endurance in the young will be different from the training used by adults. The adult model for endurance training involves an intensity of 75% of max heart rate maintained for a minimum 20 to 30 minutes. If this is performed 3 to 5 times a week, then the average adult can expect a 25% improvement in VO2max. On average, a child can expect a 10% improvement in VO2max after following an endurance training program designed around adults. Children can improve their aerobic fitness but not to the same degree as adults, when following a similar training regimen. Hormones, or the lack thereof may be the cause for the lack of aerobic improvement in children. Until growth hormone levels, such as testosterone, rise, then increasing the size of the heart through endurance training may be limited, just as increasing the size of the muscles through strength training is limited until post-puberty. A child's heart is smaller than an adult's and does not achieve its natural full size until full height is reached. Stroke volume, which is the amount of blood the heart can pump with one beat, is lower in children and it may be that this limits any further improvements in VO2max. During testing, children rarely go over a VO2 Peak score of 65 ml/kg/min, while adults can reach scores over 80 ml/kg/min. Children have higher Anaerobic Thresholds (AT) than adults do and therefore may require higher intensities of cardiovascular training for optimum benefits. The average adult will have an AT around 75% of max heart rate, but research has shown that children's AT is around 85% of max heart rate, suggesting that higher intensity training will be more appropriate for children. If a child's maximum heart rate is 205 bpm, then the optimum training heart rate for continuous CV training will be 174 bpm (205 x 0.85), which is considerably higher than the rate normally recommended for the average adult. Children cannot produce as much energy through anaerobic glycolysis and rely more on aerobic metabolism than adults. To aid this, children have greater aerobic enzyme activity than adults and burn a greater proportion of fats during aerobic exercise. An interesting side bar to this is children can consume more hot dogs and pizza than adults, and are likely to burn off those extra fat calories. Peter Pan was right, not growing up has it's benefits. It may be that the most effective endurance training for children will involve high heart rates achieving at least AT, and some interval training. Children, pre-puberty, seem to be naturally quite fit, and so regular endurance training at this stage is not necessary. During and after puberty, when the benefits from training are greater, may be the most appropriate time to start serious endurance training. The most effective kind of endurance training for children will be high-intensity continuous or interval training, where heart rates reach AT and above. 13 anniversaries Thank you and congratulations to the following members who celebrate club anniversaries in the July, August and September months! 15 Years Aimee & Ken Alley William & Jan Ankele Jr. Karen & Gene Bressler Jay Buerger Dale J.
