THE BIG SPLASH!
There was much to consider regarding a proposed remodel and
expansion of the outdoor aquatics area at GAC. The words of alumni
Member Advisory Committee member Bob Serotta say it best,
“Greenwood Athletic Club can’t afford not to do it.” So…in January
of 2006 we broke ground and we’ll be opening three new outdoor
pools this July! The total renovation includes:
• 25 meter, six lane lap pool that will be heated and open
year-round
• heated deck along three sides for easy access during the winter
months
• youth pool with slide and spray features
• adult leisure pool with a waterfall
• youth locker rooms and two additional family locker rooms
• gas fire pit for socializing
• new food and beverage service operated by ink! Coffee
This renovation is one of a long line of upgrades and services that
continue to set Greenwood Athletic Club apart from our
competition. GAC will be the only health club in the Denver
Metropolitan area that has an outdoor pool that will be heated and
open year-round. This exciting venture is one that we are proud to

Dave and Karen Giem
As written by Dave Giem
“Because of my wife’s health and
at my doctor’s recommendation, I retired on
November 10th of 1999 as the senior
engineer at Raytheon Aerospace. I started
attending Greenwood Athletic Club the
following week. My wife Karen started at GAC
in 1996 for physical therapy following a back
operation. The club and its members have
become a part of our life and have been a life
saver. The doctors thought Karen would be in
a wheelchair (which she is not) and I feel
better now than when I was fifty!
On average, we spend one to two hours a day,
five days per week at the club. Karen does
water aerobics and personal training with
Diane. I join her on Fridays and do Peggy’s
Stretch and Align class on Mondays and
Fridays. Otherwise, I exercise in the weight
room.
I weighed about 265 pounds, military pressed
90 pounds, and benched pressed about 150
pounds when I joined the club in 1999. After
five years with the club and losing over thirty
pounds, I felt stronger and more physically fit
then I ever did. I thought about setting a
goal for my 69th birthday to bench press 300
pounds and military press 200 pounds. Using
the machines at the club, I met my goals two
days before my birthday (and with three
repetitions on each)!”
Dave and Karen are ever-present, wellrecognized role models in the club. GAC
would like to thank the Giems for inspiring
your fellow members with your personal
commitment to health!

FAX: GAC and Lighthouse Diagnostic Imaging, LLC are teaming up to
provide you with a fabulous opportunity. Have a Computed
Tomography Heart and/or Lung Scan at LDI’s state of the art
facility. Coronary artery disease occurs when the arteries that carry
blood and oxygen to the heart become clogged with plaque. This
plaque build-up slows the flow of blood to the heart muscle causing
ischemia and increasing the chance of fatal and non-fatal heart
failure. Your calcium score provides a general indication of the
degree to which your coronary arteries have been narrowed. In
general, a high score indicates a greater plaque load and an
increased risk of a heart attack. Early detection is the key…Contact

TO ACHIEVE A GOAL, FIRST YOU MUST SET A GOAL
As we enter the half way point of 2006, it’s a great time to
remember your fitness goals from the beginning of the year. Can
you remember them? Have you achieved them? If so, what is your
next goal? Goal setting is important in many aspects of our lives,
including our fitness goals. Whether your goal is to lose five pounds
or to gain ten, we all need goals to keep us motivated and on track.
Typically, achievable goals need to be S.M.A.R.T. This means:
Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely. Being
specific in fitness terms means, “I want to lose ten pounds of fat
and gain four pounds of muscle.” A measurable goal, can be
assessed by various methods, i.e., you now fit into the pants you
couldn’t zip a year ago, you have lost 5% body fat, you can run a
mile in under ten minutes, vs. twelve minutes three months ago.
Attainable means setting a goal you have the ability to get to. If
you want to look like Paris Hilton, and yet you are five feet tall and
brunette, this goal is not attainable! Realistic is similar to
attainable except as you progressively attain goals along the way
and your fitness level increases, the realm of realistic expands.
What was a realistic goal a year ago is now easily attainable, so you
should set the bar higher with new realistic goals. Timely goals
have a finish line for completion. Goals that are just hanging out
space with no timeframe for accomplishment are more likely to be
goals that are never reached; those are called dreams.
Goals that meet these criteria are essential for bettering your
fitness and health levels! A goal as simple as, “to walk for ten
minutes for three days each week for two months” is a S.M.A.R.T.
goal! Fitness professionals stay focused on goals for all clients.
Trainers create design and accountability for clients’ goals, knowing
that these goals are their clients’ primary motivation for exercising.
So if you don’t have a goal, set one. If you don’t know where to
begin, consult with a trainer. Whatever you do, don’t stop reaching
for those goals!

WHY WATER?
Meet the 8:00am Stroke Development Class
When you think of swim classes, you may think of your children
or grandchildren learning basic survival skills. And let’s face it,
swimming is truly the only sport skill that can save your life.
But learning to swim is not just for children. Did you know that
six out of ten adults in the United States cannot swim well
enough to save their own lives? This is the number one reason
why many people never utilize swimming as a form of exercise.
Ira Sacks has always loved to swim and has done it daily for
years. Having been a competitive athlete, he had always felt his
swimming speed was never up to par. Just a few months later
his wife said, “His progress is amazing; he’s in shock.”
Plagued by injuries at the time, Janet Sacks turned to swimming
because she thought, “there was just nothing else I could do.”
Janet had been in physical therapy for shoulder problems for
the last four years before turning to swimming. When she began
swimming, her range of motion was so compromised that she
had difficulty putting on clothing. Eight weeks of swim classes
later, Janet sees a 95% improvement in her condition. “At first,
I was concerned that swimming was the only thing I could do,
because I hated swimming. Cama Jo has made me love it. Now
I swim four times a week!”
I won’t deny it, it is a lot easier to jump on a machine and do
thirty minutes of cardio. After all, swimming can seem like an
ordeal: change into a swimsuit (and right now, you’re thinking,
my swimsuit is ten years old and I don’t even know where it is),
get into the water, shower, dry your hair, and change back into
dry clothes. But as you read on you’ll see that after some
perseverance and a little hard work, lap swimming will soon be
like your favorite ink! Coffee drink -- addicting.
They all came for different reasons, different goals, and they all
found a passion for a sport they never though they would enjoy.
Their reasons are inspiring and their responses answer the
question, “why water?”
Two years ago Marilyn Hyman and Sue Baker began in the
8:00am Adult Stroke Development Class with GAC’s Head Adult
Instructor, Cama Jo Totura. At the time Sue was searching for
something to add variety to her workout routine. Always
athletic, Sue lifts weights and does Pilates on a regular basis.
Wanting to add to her routine, she began swim classes. “As a
child I never really learned to swim. It is wonderful because it
is so easy on the joints and an awesome workout.
Cardiovascularly, it is the hardest thing I have ever done. Cama
Jo pushes us out of our comfort zone every week.” Marilyn
Hyman came for a different reason. Being active her whole life,
Marilyn suffered from arthritis in her hips. Marilyn turned to
swimming for medical reasons. One year after beginning with
Cama Jo, she went in for a double hip replacement. Marilyn
shocked her doctors with her unusually quick recovery, which
they attributed to swimming. Six months after surgery Marilyn
was back with the 8:00am Stroke Development group.
Left to right: Janet Sacks, Marilyn Hyman, Sue Baker, Jan McDonald.
Front row: Ira Sacks, Rod McDonald.
Jan McDonald came to Cama Jo a year and a half ago with a
unique goal: to do her first triathlon. Jan and her husband Rod
are sports fanatics. They work out every week lifting weights
with their trainer, Joe Talbert, and have competed in countless
marathons and half-marathons. The only problem was that Jan
had never learned to swim. Less than six months of private
swim lessons later, she completed the 2005 Danskin Triathlon.
Now Jan and Rod McDonald have become regulars, coming every
10
Monday morning for their water workout.

please feel free to contact Cama Jo Totura, Head Adult
Instructor, at x253 or Kristin Kanthal, Aquatics Coordinator,

PROPER POSTURE 101
Think you have perfect posture? Take our test to find out.
• Is your head stacked directly on
top of your neck with the middle of
your ear over the tip of your
shoulder?
• Is your shoulder centered in the
socket and is not drifting forward?
• Do your shoulder blades rest flat
against the ribcage?
• Is your breastbone open and lifted?
• Is your ribcage stacked directly
over your pelvis?
• Are your natural spinal curves
maintained?
• Is your shoulder stacked directly
over the hip?
• Neutral pelvis: are the front of your
hipbones stacked directly over your
pubic bones?
• Are your knee joints vertical
without flexion (bent) or
hyperextension?
• Are your hips stacked directly over
the center of your ankle joint?
Part of the Pilates promise is improved posture. Good posture has
a slimming effect, making you appear taller and more confident and
even helping your clothes to fit better!
Your posture may become imbalanced from:
•
•
•
•
•
Conditions like scoliosis
Consistently carrying too heavy a load
How you sit at your desk or on the couch
Working on a computer all day
How you hold the phone
When your posture is off, your body’s normal precision of movement
is lost. With poor posture, certain muscles must perform roles they
were never intended for, which can lead to many painful
conditions, including tendonitis, low back pain, bursitis, and
muscular strain. The health-related benefits of proper posture are
substantial. When doing Pilates and working in ideal alignment,
you move more efficiently, which helps you gain strength and a
balanced physique. Sample one of our complimentary mat classes
or sign up for a private Pilates lesson to try one of the following
Pilates posture-enhancing exercises:
Pilates Posture-enhancing exercises:
• If you have an excessive forward curve in the upper spine
(dowagers hump), try:
Mat: Swan and Mermaid
Reformer: Long Box Series and Swan
• If you have an excessive curve in the lower back, try:
Mat: The Hundred and Criss-Cross
Reformer: The Hundred and Stomach Massage
• If you have an excessive curve in the lower back and tight hip
flexors, try:
Mat: Single Leg Circles
Reformer: Footwork and Forward Lunge Stretch
• If you have a flat back posture, try these exercises to stretch your
hamstrings:
Mat: The Saw and Side Kicks
Reformer: Lift and Lower, Elephant, and Tendon Stretch
Greenwood Athletic Club’s Pilates instructors can evaluate your
postural imbalances just by watching you perform Pilates exercises.
Stop by our studio where one of our qualified instructors will
evaluate your alignment based on the above specifications.

PLANNING AHEAD: THE KEY TO HEALTHY EATING
AND WEIGHT LOSS
How many times have you pulled into the drive-through on your
way home because you had nothing to make for dinner? Or when
was the last time you came home starving and raided the pantry
instead of preparing a well-balanced meal? Or even worse, have you
ever skipped a meal altogether instead of taking the time to
grocery shop and plan ahead? If any of these situations sound
familiar, you are probably one of the millions of Americans that
does not plan for meals ahead of time.
We all lead very busy lives and sometimes it seems nearly
impossible to make time for even three healthy meals a day, not to
mention trying to squeeze in snacks as well. But, with just a little
time and thought, you too can prepare quick meals and snacks that
will have you on the road to wellness. Here are a few tips to help
you become an expert meal planner:
1) Choose a prep day (usually either Saturday or Sunday)! Write
down the menu for the following Monday through Friday, make a
grocery list, and buy the foods needed for the week. Also, do any
cleaning and chopping that can be done in advance.
2) Buy healthy frozen and canned foods that can be turned into a
quick meal! For example, a bean soup with a sandwich on whole
wheat bread is great on a cold day. Or heat up a healthy brand of
frozen burrito like Amy’s and top with black beans and low fat
cheese.
3) Pack lunch the night before! If you wait until you are starving
to figure out what you are going to eat, you will be much more
likely to over-eat choosing something on the run, like fast food.
Something as simple as a sandwich, a piece of fruit, and some baby
carrots and snap peas makes a quick and easy way to eat a wellbalanced lunch.
4) Think about portable snacks!Foods like fruit, low fat string
cheese, and nuts fit easily into a purse or brief case. Never leave
home without them.
5) Finally, make your water bottle your favorite accessory!
As you can see, planning ahead can be simple and even fun. In
addition, menu planning will help to take some of the stress out of
your already busy day. If you would like more information on quick
and easy meals or if you have any other nutrition questions,

A CALL TO ACTION
Walk more or jog if you can, lift weights, do some
plyometrics...PLEASE!
Your muscles need "stress" to preserve their strength and their
mass and, just as importantly, so do your BONES.
I just received the results of my second bone density test. The good
news is, the number hasn’t changed from last year. The bad news
is, last year’s test showed me to be osteoporotic. Not the early
warning of bone loss that a test result of osteopenia gives, but the
stigma of full on osteoporosis, the degenerative bone disease of 90
year-old women. I’m 49.
Osteoporosis, or porous bone, is a disease characterized by low
bone mass and structural deterioration of bone tissue, leading to
bone fragility and an increased susceptibility to fractures,
especially of the hip, spine and wrist, although any bone can be
affected. Men can also suffer from this bone loss, but 80% of
osteoporosis patients are women.
At this moment, 10 million Americans are being diagnosed and
another 34 million would be considered to have low bone mass and
are at risk of developing osteoporosis.
There are a number of contributing factors that increase your
chances of bone loss:
• Your genes (family history)
• Being a smaller boned, light skinned woman
• Hypothyroidism (and some other chronic diseases)
• Lack of estrogen, especially from early menopause
• Lack of exercise
• Extreme dieting and weight loss
• Low calcium and/or vitamin D intake
• Smoking
• Excessive alcohol use
My downfall is the hypothyroid/early menopause induced by surgery
combination, but all my doctors agree that my salvation from a
worse score has been the frequency and type of exercise in which I
participate:
I jump. An interesting study I found years ago showed that the
highest bone density of any female athlete is in the hip joint of a
gymnast (it's the two-footed, full body weight landing).
I lift. Stress those bones with a full body program using weights
challenging enough to “max out” at 12-15 repetitions.
I walk…a lot. Move your body through space with a little impact
(Step, HiLo, jogging, Kickboxing all fit the bill).
If you are in need of a bone mineral density test, we actually offer
DEXA screening (the same method used at hospitals) here at the
club. Please see the Member Services section of this newsletter for
more details on the next testing date. If you have been diagnosed
with osteoporosis, ask your physician for specific exercise
guidelines for you.
14
Other preventative measures include:
• Eating right
• Getting your daily recommended amounts of calcium (experts
suggest 1,000 to 1,500 mgs) and vitamin D, which aids in calcium
absorption (experts suggest 400 to 800 IUs). Check with your
physician for the dosage that’s right for you and suggestions on
how to take supplements for maximum efficiency (i.e. iron
competes with calcium absorption, so it is not recommended to
take them simultaneously).
• Not smoking and avoiding excessive alcohol use.
Regardless of your age at this moment...the time to fight
osteoporosis is NOW! Because we reach our maximum bone density
around age 23, it is extremely important to choose activities and
lifestyle habits that preserve the bone mineral density you have
today. Don’t assume it won't happen to you. I would have bet a
large amount of money...it would never happen to me.

www.istop.org (web site for I.M.S.)
Andy joined the staff of excellent therapists at Physiotherapy
Associates, located inside the Greenwood Athletic Club, one year
ago. He has been working in the field of physical therapy since
1993. During the previous ten years, he was employed by Health
One with the last four years being at the Broncos Sports Medicine
Clinic in Aurora.
Andy acquired his Master of Science in Physical Therapy from Regis
University. Prior to attending Regis University’s prestigious
program, he received his Bachelor of Science in Cellular Molecular
Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Fort Lewis College. While
completing his undergraduate degree, he competed for Fort Lewis
College on a full-ride wrestling scholarship.
In addition, Andy has taken extensive continuing education in
manual therapy focusing on spinal manipulation, Maitland & Nags
Snags Mobilization, rib dysfunctions, nerve-dural mobilization,
muscle energy techniques, soft tissue mobilization and myofascial
trigger point treatment, sports medicine and spinal rehabilitation
with dynamic trunk stabilization, and neuro-muscular control. He
is also certified in making orthotics through Sole Supports.
Notably, Andy is also one of only sixteen people in the United
States certified in Intramuscular Stimulation Technique (I.M.S.)
which is offered through the Institute for the Study and Treatment
of Pain, University of British Columbia. A few of the common
syndromes treated by I.M.S. are headaches, tendonitis, frozen
shoulder, chondromalacia, Dequervains’, intervertebral disk
herniation (early stages), spinal and extremity muscle strains,
plantar faciitis, shin splints, Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) pain,
and golfer’s\tennis elbow.
Intramuscular stimulation is a technique used to restore normal
nerve and muscle function after injury. I.M.S. is a system of dry
needling that is based on a radiculopathy model for chronic pain
and has also been found to be very effective for sub-acute injuries
with neuropathic myofascial pain syndromes. The procedure
involves the use of acupuncture needles to respectively target
injured muscles which have contracted and become shortened from
distress. Unlike acupuncture, I.M.S. requires a medical examination
and diagnosis using rationale for selection of points of treatment
according to the physical signs of radiculopathy and neuropathic
myofascial pain syndromes.
Dr. Chan Gunn, a world-renowned pioneer in the research and
treatment of chronic soft tissue pain, developed I.M.S. over 20
years ago. His methods are taught at many universities and pain
centers throughout the world, including the well-known
Multidisciplinary Pain Center at the University of Washington.
Dr.Gunn has specifically written a chapter in Bonica’s Management
of Pain.
In addition to working, Andy is concurrently pursuing his
Transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree through the
University of St. Augustine specializing in manual therapy while
maintaining his active lifestyle of sports, hunting, officating high
school & college wrestling and competitive dancing.
Andy can be contacted at 5801 South Quebec, Suite #100,
Greenwood Village, CO 80111, 303-694-9193 or www.istop.org

TENNIS CENTER’S 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY
PARTY ROCKS!
The Tennis Center’s year long anniversary celebration hit a high
note on Saturday, May 13th with a full day of Rock and Roll Tennis
festivities. 1993 French Open Doubles Champion Luke Jensen
teamed up with current and former Greenwood Tennis Professionals
in junior and adult tennis clinics held throughout the day. Music
provided by Slim Event Productions kept the clinics moving and
upbeat with tunes from the 70s, 80s, 90s and today. Following the
clinic, the kids all had opportunities to win Wilson prizes while
enjoying a terrific selection of Basil Doc’s Pizza and a live rock
performance by the band Public Parking featuring Tim and Andy
Benson. Several of the kids said it was cool trying to return Luke’s
serve; those who did walked away with a new can of Wilson tennis
balls.
Adults were treated to a cocktail party with Luke following their
tennis clinic. Everyone enjoyed a nice red or white wine and Corona
Beer along with an amazing taco bar provided by Qdoba Mexican
Grill. Once they were coerced to put their food and beer down,
several of the adults took a chance at returning some of Luke’s best
serves for prizes. Lex Holland walked away with a new Wilson bag
for being the first to return one of Luke’s big cannon ball serves.
By far, the highlight of the evening came during the Pro Exhibition,
where current and former GAC pro staff showed their stuff in
costumes including Elvis, Rafael Nadal, and Bjorn Borg.
When all was said and done, a great time was had by everyone! We
would like to thank all of our sponsors who made this night
possible: Kris Johnson with Wilson Sporting Goods, Luke Jensen,
Corona Beer, Qdoba Mexican Grill, Lynn Doyle and Basil Doc’s
Pizza, Slim Event Productions and our event photographer, Mary
Keppler. Last but not least, we wish to thank our members for their
tremendous support these past ten years and we look forward to
the next ten years with you!
