Jessyca Wilson I just recently moved to Englewood, Colorado from Thief River Falls, a small town in Northwestern Minnesota. I am further pursuing my college education with an ultimate goal of obtaining my PhD and working as a psychologist. After leading a very unhealthy and sedentary lifestyle, I realized that it was time for me to seek a healthier way of life. When I toured GAC, I felt very comfortable and all the staff was extremely welcoming. I began personal training with Kelly Deveraux three times weekly and she has been a great inspiration to me. After gaining some strength and stamina, I decided to try boxing. I now train weekly with boxing instructor Kelly Kimsey. I enjoy walking, rollerblading, boxing and weight training. With a lot of help from my two wonderful trainers, I have progressed more than I thought possible and am hoping to soon join the tennis club and begin taking tennis lessons. Joining GAC has been one of the best decisions I have made for myself. Jessica Wilson GAC Member since January 2007 Personal trainer, Kelly Devereux admires Jessica’s level of commitment. “Jessica is one of the most determined and dedicated individuals I have ever met! Her willingness to do whatever is required to reach her goals should be an inspiration to everyone. She is relentless in how consistent she is toward exercise. She has the best attitude and does everything with a smile!” Trainer and Jessica’s boxing instructor, Kelly Kimsey says, “Jessica is willing to try and do anything new. She started training with me for boxing and now practices on her own at least once a week, plus meeting with me. She now is picking up Tennis. Who knows what she’ll try next?!” 3 P-Note RUNNING STRONG Greenwood Athletic and Tennis Club members Sharon O’Connor and James Huber know about dedication and determination. As ER doctors they have both gone through extensive training and education to achieve their goal. The focus and drive required to fulfill that commitment shows in other areas of their lives, especially when it comes to their own health and lifestyle. Both triathletes and marathon runners, Sharon and James wanted an indoor facility that would help them continue their training year-round. Living only one mile from the club, it was a perfect fit so on October 8, 1986, Sharon and James joined Greenwood Athletic Club and became member #24, now holding the honor of being GAC’s third longest active members. Sharon was an avid marathon runner for many years winning the Denver and Steamboat marathons and placing second in the Honolulu marathon. Upon joining GAC she participated in group exercise classes to add variety to her running program. Currently Sharon participates in EnergyZone® classes and loves spinning. She takes Barbara’s spin class and says “Barbara inspires me. She is the most enthusiastic, upbeat, cheerleader. Sometimes she even brings me to tears. She is one of the neatest women I know…I just love her.” Unfortunately Sharon doesn’t get to run as much these days due to four ankle surgeries. She credits the club and many staff members for helping her through the pain and stress of recovery. “I worked with Katie in Physiotherapy Associates. I trained with Oyvind in a cast and on crutches. I hate that anaerobic feeling I get lifting weights and couldn’t have done it without him.” Sharon now uses the club six to seven times per week along with her husband James, son Kevin who is a varsity baseball player at Cherry Creek high school and has also trained with GAC Personal Trainer Oyvind Gulbrandsen, and daughter Carnie who is now in college. James is also a marathon runner and triathlete. He has suffered from chronic injuries and is now in rehab from a back fusion. He hasn’t been using the club as often due to his injuries but James says “I appreciate the club. It’s a wonderful place.” Sharon adds “It’s a beautiful facility. The staff is incredibly friendly; the club is very welcoming and feels like home away from home”. Thank you Sharon and James for 20 years of dedication to GAC and more importantly for your dedication to your health and for being an inspiration to your fellow GAC members. THE TALL TIMBERS AWARD Every year the Greenwood Village Chamber of Commerce holds a competition called The Tall Timbers Award to honor an outstanding local business, its management, and its employees. The Award recipient is recognized as a leader in its industry and as a role model in the community. Greenwood Athletic and Tennis Club was awarded as one of the three finalists in this years competition. 4 GOOD-BYE’S AND CONGRATS Please join me in bidding Molly Kemmer, former Greenwood Athletic and Tennis Club Assistant General Manager farewell. Molly started as a Membership Representative at GAC nearly six years ago. She was soon promoted to Director of Member Services and continued in that position until her promotion to AGM in July of 2003. Molly has taken a position as the General Manager of a new club in Cherry Creek. Congratulations Molly and best of luck with your new endeavor! So the story goes, when one door closes another one opens. We didn’t have to look far to fill portions of Molly’s position. It is with great pleasure that I announce Barbara Lubbers promotion to Greenwood Athletic and Tennis Club’s new Vice President of Club Services. Barbara has been involved in various areas of the fitness industry since 1984. From instructor, Front Desk Manager, and Assistant Athletic Director at the International Athletic Clubs to instructor and Director of Group Exercise here at GAC, she has the knowledge and skill set to help elevate the level of service we provide to you, our members to great heights! Barbara has been a familiar face at Greenwood for 16 years and according to her “Greenwood feels like my second home, and our staff….my second family”. Barbara is married to Steve who is also a professional in the fitness industry and is the proud mom of 23 year old son, Travis. An avid reader, Barbara belongs to a book club and in her off hours, cherishes time spent with friends, loves being outdoors and enjoys 4-wheeling with her husband and son. Congratulations Barbara! One too many spinning classes, mixed in with sitting at our desk for hours at a time can create the monster in your back. When this happens, we are usually drawn to the horizontal position, afraid to move. It is the fear of moving that keeps us immobilized and exasperates the pain. A growing body of evidence suggests that the pain in our backs may be affected by muscles of the core (those that go from the abs to the hip flexors) and those running down our back side, the posterior chain. The core muscles are like your antigravity muscles. They assist in every movement from sprinting and jumping to sitting and sanding. They stabilize your spine, anchoring it to your pelvis and holding it upright. The strength of your core muscles are directly reflected in your posture! INSTRUCTOR SPOTLIGHT: LORI MAKKAI B.S., Exercise Science and Fitness Programming. Lori has over 15 years experience in the fitness industry as a personal trainer and group exercise instructor. She learned extensive rehabilitation techniques as an athletic trainer for a division one collegiate program and was introduced to the Pilates method while researching solutions for clients with special considerations such as joint and back pain. Recognizing the invaluable benefits of Pilates, Lori decided to enhance her education and obtain a certification in the Pilates method. Lori is Peak Pilates Certified, and studied under Colleen Glenn, cofounder of the PMA and Master Trainer for Peak. Her future educational plans include the Master's Program at the Pilates Center. Lori enjoys skiing, sand volleyball, windsurfing and golf. She is married to Adam, an Investment Advisor and Finance Instructor for Regis University. They have one son, Marcus, three years old, and hoping for more children soon! The good news is that Pilates can help ease your back pain, if not take it away all together. Pilates will help you develop a “corset” of strength unlike any other form of exercise. Pilates works the core and targets the muscles that are the common suspects causing pain. The back-healing power of Pilates extends beyond stretching and strengthening of muscles; it forces you to be active in the management of your pain. Pilates calls on your attention to the neglected muscles so that you can walk, run, play golf, and ski again without the fear of pain to follow. If you do experience chronic back pain, stop by our Pilates studio and talk to one of our Certified Pilates Instructors. We can show you the five best exercises for easing back pain targeted around your hamstrings, hips, gluteals, back, and of course your abdominal muscles. Like any exercise program, it takes repetition to create change. We recommend that you participate in Pilates at least twice a week, starting with private lessons. Mat classes are an excellent choice, however, if you are in pain, it would be beneficial to work one on one with an instructor so that your program is individualized to meet your needs and to protect you from incorrect movement patterns. 6 AT GREENWOOD ATHLETIC AND TENNIS CLUB 20% off One Private Session * Expires September 15, 2007. It’s that time of year again – I can already smell the sunscreen! Coming from someone who has spent every summer since birth at a pool, I cannot help but feel a sense of joy seeing the pools up and running. From the time I was twelve years old, the pools of Greenwood Athletic and Tennis Club have been a sanctuary of sorts for me. When I was younger, it provided me with a great way to keep in shape and practice something I loved. In college, it was a place to teach children safety skills and hopefully a passion for the water. Now it is my home and I spend more time at the pool than anywhere else. I cannot believe how lucky I am! I now watch people using the pool for quality time with their families, serious workout, or a calm end to a day. Try something new this summer and dive in! The proliferation of technological amenities in our lives has made it increasingly more convenient to do less work manually and to burn fewer calories than we have in the past. So what do we do? Those of us with kids know how hectic our schedules are becoming and what little time we have to spend with our children. So, why not take time to exercise with your children? This doesn’t mean take your nine year old into the weight room with you, it means find a sport or activity that your children find interesting and schedule one hour with them pursuing that activity. It could be as simple as shooting baskets with your children or bicycling for an hour. Doing either one of those activities in a moderately paced fashion can burn hundreds of calories in an hour, not to mention spending quality time with the most important investment in your life; your child! We take for granted that simple activities such as playing sports, cycling and simply jogging can be beneficial, both as a great form of exercise and very rewarding as a parent. These activities may not replace your normal workout in the gym, but they will add an additional caloric burn to your routine. Subsequently, your time with your child will form healthy patterns of exercise and fond memories. To combat childhood obesity, it is our job as parents to teach our kids that exercise is enjoyable and not a chore by finding activities they enjoy. Doing joint events like a family race (such as the Fitness Festival in September) or a family based program are great ways to get some exercise and put in some family time. At GAC we have group exercise classes like Hip Hop, Spinning, Kickboxing and Yoga, which you can do with your child if they are at least nine years old. Upcoming pay-extra programs like Okinawan Karate, Beat the Heat Swim-athon, and Parent Tot swim lessons are great ways to burn extra calories while having fun with the kids. This summer take your kids out and have fun while you work toward attaining the body you have always wanted! TEEN BOXING (ages 13-17) This program helps teens develop basic boxing skills while providing a great workout. The Glycemic Index was created more than 20 years ago as a method for ranking the effect that different carbohydrates have on the body. The idea is that foods that are high Glycemic Index will cause a greater increase in blood sugar levels while lower GI foods will create a lesser increase. Advocates of the Glycemic Index claim that by avoiding high GI foods like bread, potatoes, bananas, and carrots you may not only lose weight, but you may also improve your blood sugar, cholesterol, and energy levels. So the question is, are these claims true? Is the Glycemic Index the key to weight loss? Unfortunately, at this time research does not support the claim that eating a low GI diet will aid in weight loss, blood sugar regulation, or appetite control. Although it is true that consistently elevated blood sugar levels can cause many problems including difficulty with weight management, research shows no direct correlation between carbohydrate content of a specific food and the body’s insulin response. Also, it has been found that blood sugar levels peak at about the same time regardless of whether the carbohydrate source is ranked as high or low on the Glycemic Index. In addition to these discrepancies the Glycemic Index has numerous other flaws which decrease its validity. First, the Glycemic Index of an individual food item can vary depending on ripeness, how it is cooked, and even how it is prepared. Second, the way that a carbohydrate food effects sugar levels not only changes from person to person, but can also vary in the same person from day to day. Foods eaten alone will cause a different response from foods eaten with meals, as will foods eaten earlier in the day as opposed to later. Finally, the Glycemic Index can not be used to guide your nutrition choices as some healthy foods like fruits are high GI while some sodas and candy bars are low GI. The bottom line is that although the Glycemic Index may be a tool for meal and menu planning it is not an effective tool for weight loss, appetite suppression, or blood sugar regulation. Fad diets will come and go, but balanced nutrition and consistent exercise is still the gold standard for weight management. For more information on healthy nutrition and meal planning contact Beth Jauquet, RD at x320. 13 Tennis Ron Steege, Director of Tennis 303.770.2582 x394 [email protected] UNDERSTANDING “THE SEGMENTED SWING” By Ron Steege Sounds impressive doesn’t it? Truth of the matter is that this simple technical concept could be the answer to many of your tactical problems. Every day I hear people say things such as “I play better against people who put pace on the ball, my approach shots always go long, I have trouble with big hitters or if I try to attack a slow serve my ball seems to fly!” All of the above problems are related and if you understand and can apply some of what I’m about to tell you, the impact on your game could be huge! The best explanation that I’ve heard on the segmented swing came from an Aussie friend of mine named Brett Hobden. Years ago he developed a teaching method called “System 5” which divides various aspects of the game into five phases or keys. Space here doesn’t allow for an in depth look, but basically what it comes down to is this; knowing where you are on the court and reading the type of ball you are about to receive determines the proper method you should use to send the ball back. The problem with many club players is that they tend to see all shots coming at them through the same rose colored glasses. What’s important to realize is that tennis is a game in which conditions are constantly changing. To determine the best response for a given situation you must first be able to identify various characteristics of the ball you are receiving, such as the speed, spin and the depth of the ball. To adapt to these changing conditions it is necessary to adjust the size or length of your backswing along with a corresponding follow-through. To understand the concept of the “Segmented Swing” divide the backswing and the follow through each into five equal segments starting from the point of contact. In other words, think of where you contact the ball as point zero and divide your swing going back into five equal segments. Your full backswing is number five. Do the same with your follow-through until you finish over your shoulder and consider this as a five. You now have two numbers to identify the proper length of your backswing and follow-through for various shots in a given situation. Now let’s consider what you would need to do to return a fast serve. The biggest mistake made in this situation is that the player attempts to do a full five backswing and five follow-through as fast as they possibly can with little chance for success. The proper way to return a fast serve is to reduce the size of your backswing to a two and work with the pace provided by your opponent. The next step is to add the control part of your swing which is the follow through. In this case the follow through should be a swing length of three or four. In another example, when hitting an approach it’s easy to send the ball long because you are working from a short court and are usually on the move. In this case a two/five swing would be appropriate. Since you are moving there is 14 natural momentum and very little need for a long backswing, so in this situation a backswing of two segments would do the job. To get the ball to drop in front of the baseline, a five segment follow-through will provide the spin and control you need. To learn how to apply the “Segmented Swing” effectively I recommend that you take a private lesson with any one of our well qualified pros. With a little practice you will have the tools you need to handle any situation you may encounter in your matches and having the right tools makes the game easier and more fun! Good luck and we’ll see you on the courts! Ask the Expert Oyvind Gulbrandsen Certified Private Fitness Trainer Specialist, Sports Nutrition, Fitness Therapist 303.770.2582 x409 LADIES, IT’S TIME FOR YOUR SUMMER BODY! LET’S DO SOME SQUATS! Summertime is around the corner and it’s time to show those legs, arms and abs. Ladies, it’s time to hit the weight room. Yeah, that’s right. Weights! Some of the fittest, strongest and leanest bodies belong to athletes like Maria Sharapova and celebrities like Eva Longoria and Madonna. One common factor, I guarantee these strong women are incorporating into their fitness routine, is serious weight training. I know you love your classes, your yoga, your Pilates. Please keep doing everything you enjoy, but if you want that summertime body, it’s not going to happen without weight training. I’m not talking about lifting light weights for reps and reps. You need to be ready to sweat! That’s what I’m talking about. Let’s hit the weights hard! I’d like to answer some common questions and address some misconceptions about women and weight training: 1. Will I get “bulky” lifting heavy weights? As trainers, we hear this question all the time. Let’s get one thing straight. Women do not produce enough testosterone (a hormone primarily responsible for increasing muscle size) to become bulky. (Most men do not even produce enough of this hormone.) Don’t be nervous about this. We have to move away from the mind set that weight training will make you bigger. It’s just not true. 2. Weight training makes me feel stiff and muscle-bound. Perform all exercises with full range of motion and you will be more flexible with better stretching capabilities. Exercises like stiff-legged dead lifts, flies and chin-ups stretch the muscle in the bottom range of the movement. (Yoga and Pilates will support your efforts.) 3. I don’t sweat lifting weights, so I perform cardiovascular exercise to burn fat. Great! Keep doing cardio, but to maximize your calorie burn and speed up metabolism, you have to build muscle. Performing cardiovascular exercise only will break down both muscle and fat. Make your goal to burn fat without losing muscle tissue. Remember building muscle will increase metabolism and lead to a better calorie burn, loss of fat and better muscle tone. Here at GAC we have some incredibly fit women who have put together balanced fitness routines that include Pilates, yoga, cardio and weight training. I have had the honor of working out with and training some of these women and they are all able to kick my butt in the weight room any day of the week. The bottom line is, they train as hard (if not harder) than I do with heavy weights and intensity and their lean muscular bodies look feminine! If you don’t believe me, challenge our Director of Pilates, Sara Talbert to a leg workout, member Mary Ann Westfall to a push up contest, or member Louisa Schaffer to ten pull ups with perfect form. These women are great examples of what I’m talking about. Lean, strong, flexible and feminine! We all have the same goal and that is to be healthy and fit, so don’t be intimidated (by the weight room), be intimidating! One of our qualified personal trainers here at the club will be happy to help set up a customized weight program for you. I guarantee you will break a sweat!
