Southern Enduro Riders Association The Twisted Throttle Volume II, Issue I October/November 2010 I figured you would rather look at pictures than read about what’s inside - so here are a few extra shots taken this season. SERA Kids at Cornerstone Ranch Rock & Roll Labor Day Weekend was the beginning of the 2011 SERA Championship Series and the season opening Harescramble was held at Cornerstone Ranch in Gardendale, Alabama. Red Alexander and crew did an excellent job of preparing a challenging course for all of the classes for the day. On Saturday night prior, the Harescramble Awards Presentation took place on the platform in the campground. Pictures are included inside. Sunday morning the temperature was on the brisk side and the overcast skies were perfect for the kids races that started at 8 am. The Beginner Pee Wees kicked things off with a starting line full of anxious little guys wanting to get the win. Ethan Mize brought home top honors in his first harescramble ever. Mize is the grandson of longtime SERA member Ronald Walters. Winning must be in the genes. Jarrett Durham, Alex Nicholas, Walker Alexander, Caleb Lantrip and Anderson Ivey rounded out the class. The Pee Wee class had some exciting competition going on right down to the wire. Grayson Davis followed Zane Williams very closely for the duration of the event until the last lap when he made an aggressive pass thru a hot line he had been using to take over the lead on the white flag lap. Davis and Williams would be followed closely thru the finish line by Blake Hillman and Branson Williams. Eight youngsters started the Int. Kids class with lots of speed and experience amongst the contenders. Evan Chisolm proved to be the fastest on the day by turning some really fast lap times to win over Bryce Weaver, Kayne Hinton, Austin Anz, Mason Shofield, Dayton Nicholas, Connor Barrett and Ethan Gregg. Gregg was unable to finish because of mechanical failure. Kyler Godwin has his hands full for the first three laps of the four lap event with Tyler Tidmore on his heels. Godwin won the event followed by Jackson Davis, Noah Allen, Tidmore, who went down on the last lap, Rex Parsons and Forrest Hale. The Girls Class had 4 competitors to take to the challenge with Carly Vogel and Kels Duke battling it out until the last lap when Duke had complications. Vogel went on to win with Duke placing second. Newcomer to this sport but longtime supporter of her husband and son, Gary and Adam, Debbie Barr competed and finished on the podium in third place. Welcome to the fun Debbie. And rounding out the class was Ellen Herrington whom we have been missing for a while on the SERA harescramble scene. Good to have you back. Who Needs Brakes? They Just Slow Ya Down!!! Due to the overwhelming turnout for the inaugural harescramble for the 2011 season, the start time was delayed just a bit to allow time to get everyone in the computer. But the wait was worth it at Cornerstone Ranch as the competition was very exciting and the fans were there to cheer their guys on. Over 200 started the event with 199 making at least one lap in the 5 lap event. The first lap would be 6.5 miles in length with the remaining 4 consisting of 10 miles of a mixture of open and tight terrain. Red Alexander started things off with a very motivating mini sermon about finding our purpose in life. Then THE RACE WAS ON!!! Kyle Henderson grabbed the holeshot in AA but before 3 miles into the first lap Tristan Redferrin had taken the lead and was steadily pulling away. When Redrerrin came into the pits midway thru the race, he was ready to call it a day because he had no brakes on the rear. He LITERALLY had NO brakes. The pads were not to be found. His dad told him he had about a 4 minute lead and he needed to just try and hang on for the top 3 or so. Redferrin lost a little ground but not enough to lose the overall win. Henderson and Steve Nicholas battled with each other until the very end when Henderson crossed the checkered flag ONE second ahead of Nicholas. Johnny Barber, Troy Shumate, Bryan Petty, Wesley Porter, Mark Lewis, Cliff Ousley and Micah Seale rounded out the top 10. Several top contenders had trouble and would not finish the race. Open B rider Chase Pealer claimed Overall B followed closely by newcomer to the B class Neal Ousley in the Lites division for 2nd overall B. Jason Brasington managed to claim first in the large 30+B class with a strong run coming from behind thru the pack. Overall C went to Lance Hoover, Lites C, who finished in 37th overall. During the event, our President Danny Stevens tried to help two riders get untangled as their bikes locked up together. In the process, his finger was severely damaged and he left immediately for the hospital. Mr. Stevens has had surgery and our best wishes for a speedy recovery. Danny always goes above and beyond his call of duty to this organization. Many thanks to him. Editor’s Note: Welcome back to another great season of competitive racing in the south. SERA is growing and the guys and ladies seem to be getting faster and faster each year. If at any time during the year you take pictures that you would like to share with everyone in the newsletter or if you have input on any event that you would like to put in the next edition, feel free to e-mail it to me. I sometimes struggle to get good pictures at some of the races and sometimes miss something interesting that might take place during a race or the weekend involved. If you find anything wrong with any article please let me know—don’t just complain about it to other people without me knowing my error. It’s been a great season thus far and looks to be a most competitive one in several classes to this point. Have fun and keep me posted on any newsworthy items that need to be shared. Give God the Glory for all that He has done. LET”S RACE!!!!! Kim DeLoach Page 2 The Twisted Throttle Tiger Creek Kids Enduro—September 11, 2010 Walerius is Crowned King The afternoon of September 11 there was a large crowd of kids and adults in the pine thicket campground of Ovett, MS awaiting the start of the 2011 SERA Enduro season. The excitement began in the 2 o'clock hour with the youngest group of contenders starting in intervals on a 1 mile course for 20 minutes. Grayson Knight reigned in this one over Daniel Reine in the Beginner Pee Wee Class. The next Pee Wee group had 10 youngsters battling for the win with Carter Melton, Grayson Fair and Zane Williams taking the podium positions. Rounding out the class were Alex Nicholas, Damon Pearson, Nicholas Walerius, William Walerius, Josue DeCarvelho, Ryan Reine and Fischer Harrison. The Intermediate Kids had Dayton Nicholas following in the footsteps of the Nicholas winning ways as he held on to the top spot followed by Kayne Hinton and Logan Blackwell for the top 3 positions. Connor Melton, Josh Hinton, Jake Harrison, and Jeremy Corley finished out the class in that order. James Walerius had his hands full with Cameron Reed until the last lap when something went wrong with Reed’s bike and he lost ground to Walerius. They would claim the top 2 spots followed by Connor Wood and Marshall Lasiter. Dawn Harrison took home top honors by winning the first enduro of the season in the Girls Vet Class over Kels Duke, Susan Reine and Ellen Herrington. Jessica Delee was the lone competitor in the Intermediate Girls division for the day. (Jessica is giving the guys a break this season) The older classes raced for 45 minutes on a 4 mile /lap course that was part of the enduro used on Sunday for the adult race. SERA KIDS Snapshots from the Awards Presentations for 2010 Short Season Harescramble Champion Cliff Ousley (photos -Kim DeLoach) Enduro Champion Carsten Cagle (photos -Carolyn Reed) Hillbilly Classic Kids Enduro Reed Claims Top Honors Lots of talented youngsters took to the challenging course for round 2 of the 2011 SERA Kids Enduro Season. Cameron Reed avenged his 2nd place finish in round 1 by staying in the gas and claiming 1st this time over James Walerius, who won 2 weeks prior in Laurel. Dayton Nicholas is a force to be reckoned with in the Intermediate Class as he claimed the top spot. Ryan Reine and Zane Williams aced the Beginner Pee Wee and Pee Wee classes respectively. Jessica Delee finished ahead of Kellie Nicholas in the younger girls class while Dawn Harrison and Kels Duke had a close one in the older girls division that had a little twist to it by the end of the race. Page 4 The Twisted Throttle Bobbitt Tames Tiger Creek These Boots Are Made For Racing National Enduro Champion Russell Bobbitt got a taste of enduro racing SERA style as he took a trip south to Ovett, MS with several of his SERA friends. Bobbitt aced the first enduro of the season by 3 minutes over former SERA champion Cliff Ousley. Ousley edged out Steve Nicholas by a single minute to claim 2nd overall with Nicholas taking the final spot on the podium. The course for this event was set up so that riders would make loops that all came back to the campground for each check-in. The test sections were a combination of open yet curvy and stumpy terrain, tight, and I mean tight, short sections, and then of course the leftovers of what looked like where a tornado had come thru. One section was a pick and choose which way you want to go to get to the other side where the arrows were. And all that happened before the short course cutoff at 40 miles. Enduros aren't meant to be easy– thus the name enduro-a test of endurance. Cliff Ousley has done a heckuva job setting a good example for his younger brother on the trails as Neal was the winner of the Overall B award at this event. It’s a good thing his parents, Charles and Pam, were willing to leave the campground Saturday afternoon and go back home to Stanton, AL to get Neal’s boots that were left behind. It’s only about a 3.5 hour drive. Richard Bankston claimed Overall C dropping 31 points thru 8 checks. Wesley Porter had a mishap before the race ever started for him and he still managed to complete some sections before having too much pain set in to continue. He had some pretty serious injuries to both wrists and his shoulder. Trent Whisenant and Brennen Reed had a close race going, only being separated by one minute at the end of the day. Carolyn Reed brought home her first win in the Women’s class. Before the race began she had several goals for the day that included catching Ed Bowen, who started one minute ahead of her, winning the class for the day, and not letting Bobbitt catch her in any of the test sections. She was 2 for 3 with her goals. Donations will be taken up to supply Ridgerunners with orange paint for the stumps before next year’s event…..just kiddin. The Twisted Throttle Page 5 Hillbilly Classic-Clanton Alabama Time to Cowboy Up—It Was a Dusty Mudder!!!! 85% chance of thunderstorms for the morning of September 26 in Clanton, Alabama didn’t scare off many as 74 rows started the event under overcast skies with the strong threat of a downpour at any minute. The downpour came, but it was well into the race for most participants who clawed and scraped their way thru the muddled terrain in the afternoon. The first few hours of the day were perfect racing conditions in comparison to the massive heat we have been experiencing this summer. Cooler temperatures and less humidity made it somewhat comfortable - then the rains came and stayed. The early rows were just finishing up when the rain started. Jason Chancey of SETRA claimed top overall with Cliff Ousley taking home top SERA honors. Carsten Cagle completed the podium by taking 2nd overall SERA. Ousley’s big little brother, Neal, who is only 14, grabbed Overall B for SERA and newcomer to the enduro series, Barney Dunaway claimed Overall C. Overall Special Classes went to Johnny Ford. Lites A had a tough battle between Jeff Provencher and Hunter Walters with Provencher winning by mere seconds. Vicki Anz endured well claiming 1st in SERA ahead of Kaitlin Hagamaker and Carolyn Reed. Prayers go out to Ronnie Cicero who crashed during the second half of the race and was hauled out on a stretcher with what was thought to be a broken hip. Get well soon Mr. Cicero. Ronnie was treated and released from the hospital the same day with a really bad bruised hip. That’s Great news!!!! On Tuesday after the event, Ed Bowen revealed that he had a broken wrist and rib. Take care Mr. Bowen - praying for a speedy recovery. Hats off to Clanton T&T for an excellent event . Trails were challenging and marked extremely well. Great job by all who helped with the Hillbilly. OHHHH BROWNIE!? OUSLEY WINS HS IN WIGGINS The weather was the only thing cool about the day of racing at Wiggins, MS on October 3. The competition was hot and ready to take to the challenge of the trails in the dusty, hard packed sand. The kids started things off early in the morning as there was a brisk chill in the air. Jackson Davis was the lone competitor in Vet Kids while Evan Chisolm aced the Intermediate Kids class. Dayton Nicholas was out front until his front caliper came off his bike causing trouble for him. Bryce Weaver finished a strong 2nd. Jessica Delee and Kellie Nicholas were fender to fender until the last lap when Nicholas had trouble and Delee pulled away with the win. Debbie Barr won the Vet Girls class. So good to see a lady racing and her husband and son pitting for her. Red Alexander gave a great devotion during the riders meeting before the adult race which started at 12:30. 100 riders started the event with Cliff Ousley claiming the holeshot in AA and avoiding any dust until he caught the lap riders. Carsten Cagle seemed to be gaining ground each section but ran out of gas close to the end of lap 2 of the 3 lap race. Kyle Henderson and Tristan Redferrin came thru the woods section at the end of lap 3 neck and neck, both trying to get around a lap rider. Once in the open field, Redferrin won the battle and finished 2nd overall followed by Henderson for the final spot on the podium. Steve Nicholas claimed 4th Overall on the day. Wesley Burks had an excellent day to finish 5th overall out of the Lites A class. Ronnie said if his son would quit making rookie mistakes he’d finish even higher. Devin Stokely must have been upset about something ‘cause he rode his Yamaha like a MADMAN - 1st Lites B!!!!! Many contenders DNF’d for differing reasons—Tyler Carter, Cagle, Jacob Davis, Frank Davis, Will Silas, Bryan Petty, Hunter Walters, Jordyn Dubose—just to name a few. As of publishing of this edition, the complete results had not been posted on the website. Check for all results from previous events on the official home page of SERA on the Web. Where Are They Now? Tree Farm 2009 Special Tribute to our Fallen Friend and Competitor Burton Wayne Huff - May 18, 1964 - September 11, 2010 Burton became a friend to many in the motorcycle racing world when he was a young teenager living in Stanton, Alabama. He travelled with PMMC members to states all over the country including Oklahoma for a two day qualifier back in the early 80’s. Burton started wearing a ribbon off the back of his helmet and continued to do so until he competed for the last time at the Gobbler Getter in November of 2009. At that event he wrecked going into a check and messed up his leg. He was unable to ride for a while but said his goal was to race again as soon as possible. He and his two sons, Trent and Casen, came to the Trisanction in January to watch his many buddies there competing. Just one of many memories is a buddy enduro in Clanton - back when they started at the fair grounds - and Burton and I rode together. He let me guide to start with until our good friend, Kurt Wallace, trying to be funny , led us thru the worst part of a mudhole and the chain came off. Once getting the chain back on, Burton decided it would be best for him to take over the handlebars and make up some lost time. Needless to say, I was hanging on for dear life as he was riding like he was by himself. Just last year, Burton claimed top 10 overall at multiple harescrambles in SERA. He had introduced his son Trent to racing and was always there to follow him up and cheer him on. Burton is missed by all who knew him. Heaven’s gain is our loss. Kim DeLoach Romans 8:28 When we were in high school, Burton, my sister Tina, and I went rollin yards. We finished one and Tina and I ran back to the car. Tina was the driver and noticed Burton hadn’t made it back yet. She cranked up the car and took off. I saw Burton running and pushed open the back door so he could jump in - about the same time Tina slammed on brakes and Burton rammed into the open door - bending the hinges. If you can picture this in your mind - you will laugh. Burton is also the reason I am in the trucking business today. He taught me the ropes with that as well as the Goat/Sheep Business and Farming. One day several of us decided to ride to the clubhouse on our bikes. Burton and John Green decided to race each other with Burton giving John a head start. We all came along later and noticed Burton’s bike parked up beside a tree - handlebar balanced. We went on to the pasture and realized that Burton wasn’t coming on after all. We went back to check on him - and his bike wasn’t purposely put against the tree - that’s just how it ended up at the end of his crash. He was laying on the ground not too far from the tree. Landon Carter Volume II, Issue I Kenneth Royster, Burton, Larry Little 1979-80 Season “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing. 2Timothy 4:7-8 NKJV Rest in Peace Our Friend Gobbler Getter 2009 Burton.... hmmmmm... Well I guess I was one of Burton's newest friends.... however we did hit it off very well. Ever since Landon and I started seeing each other.. Burton has been in the picture. At first he was not around lots when I was there or even at the races.. but then when Landon got real interested in the goats... Burton was always there helping and giving advice. I will never forget walking in to the Clanton Goat Sale for the first time and actually knowing someone in there. It is a scruffy bunch to say the least.... but there sat Burton Huff. I thought.. this guy has got to be bored to be at this place .. but I learned quickly.. if you watch and listen.. you can entertain yourself with all the different people..from every aspect of life. We probably sat in those hard bleachers at the goat sale for 4 hours that day. Landon bought goats and Burton and I laughed at everything. I can just hear him laughing now. After that day.. we were big friends. Goat sale Buddies!!! Sherry Ferguson Burton and I taught the Preschool Sunday School Class at Ebenezer Baptist Church for 2 years until he became sick and was unable to attend church. Burton was so faithful to his church and was willing to help anywhere needed. He loved his SS class of 3-4 year olds and they loved him too. They all wanted to sit in his lap during class. Burton always had his sons, Trent and Casen, with him-which is a testament to his love for God and for his children. I miss Burton’s smiling face every Sunday. He was a true friend and will surely be missed. Penny Gregg - Mom of Ethan Gregg 2010 Harescramble Pee Wee Champion. Page 7 SERA 2840 Co. Rd. 26 Plantersville, AL 36758 LET”S RACE!!!!!! HOT DOGS & HAMBURGERS So I’m sitting around here getting ready for the weekend thinking about hot dogs and hamburgers. I’m just wondering why they call em hot dogs, it ain’t got a tail! And why do we call em hamburgers, it’s not ham. Fact is, I’ve had burgers before that made me question whether it came off something breathing, or whether it was meat to begin with! Then it hit me, that’s how Nicodemus was in scripture. There he was, a religious scholar among the Jews and not even going to heaven. Just like a lot of folks we see in church every Sunday and Wednesday. How you ask? Jesus told Nicodemus in John chapter 3 verse 3 “except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”. You see, going to Wendy’s don’t make us a hamburger, and going to church don’t make us a Christian. It’s a heart condition. It’s what happens when we accept Jesus as Lord and Savior and become born again. I know I’m going to Heaven. How bout you have that heart to heart with Jesus and join me. See ya there. Bro Doty
