As SC State continues to revamp its campus, its image received a makeover as the university’s new brand logo made its debut February 23 in
the President’s STATE Room at the Hugine Student Residence Complex.
University Relations and Marketing Director Erica Prioleau said that the
new look will enhance the university’s public appearance.
“It’s a new look that lets the world know that South Carolina State
is entering a renaissance, a ‘new state of mind,’ in South Carolina and
beyond,” said Prioleau.
The new logo and brand campaign are the result of a research and
development project that began in 2005, when the university partnered
with Semaphore, Inc. to design a new brand and marketing plan for the
school using criteria that would give the university a new image, according to SC State Board of Trustees President Maurice Washington.

At least once per week, students of the Business Department of SC
State University walk this campus professionally clad in business attire, looking like the budding business men and women that they are.
Some of them may proudly declare that they already are. Is this just a
formality or part of a greater vision by the university? The later is the
answer.
Business students enrolled in SB 201, SB 301, and SB 401 are required
to attend the weekly Executive Speaker Series (ESS) program as a laboratory requirement. Attendance at, and reports on the ESS programs
account for 20% of each student’s final grade in each course. Student
roles include platform participants (providing statements of welcome, Senator John Matthews poses with Dr. Barret, Dean of the College of Business and Apintroduction of speakers, announcements, etc.), ushers, monitors and plied Professional Sciences, and business stuparticipation in a round table discussion before the actual event.
dents after and his speech
The Executive Speaker Series at SC State University was implemented in the core curriculum of the School of Business in 1996 as a component of the Leadership and Professional Development Program, which all business majors are required to complete. Its purpose is to expose
students to viewpoints of leaders who are on the cutting edge of business, industry and government. Students
are provided with key points on developing skill sets that are needed to become a successful leader in various
fields. Each Wednesday, executives spend the day interacting with students and faculty in roundtable discussions and a general assembly. Executives from companies such as Pfizer, Milliken, Federal Deposit Insurance
Company (FDIC), Savannah River Site, Toast Master, Bell South, Geico, Ernst & Young, among others have
participated in the series.
The Executive Speaker Series has been a major tool in equipping business students to enter the workforce
and even start their own businesses. In the highly competitive job market, it keeps them one step ahead of the
rest and poised for success.

Kon the Don: Another
Kanye smash
By Secret Spencer
Eye Candy of the Month Coordinator
Kon the Don, produced by DJ Keyz
and the Concept Kings, features
exclusive remixes by hip-hop star
Kanye West. This mixtape includes
many exclusive remixes as well as
unreleased tracks by Kanye. Several
songs that have already received honors and credibility now have been
decorated with the musical genius of Kanye West. Only a few of the
disc’s tracks would survive main-stream play, due to the controversial
nature of the music. With twenty-seven songs on the mixtape, Kanye
served a feast of lyrics and beats for a lyrically-starved hip-hop audience. He definitely gives his fans their money’s worth, and according
to an on-line poll many listeners agree! Collaborations include Kanye
with legendary rap and hip-hop artists like Jay-Z, Nas, Ice Cube, and
E-40; these are just a few to name among many others. Even tracks
from his sophomore album, Late Registration, have been graced by living legends of the music industry. With Kon the Don it is evident that
Mr. West has talent far beyond the small portion that we have heard.

“These recommendations were a response to SC State’s desire to build a brand and an identity that would increase our enrollment;
increase the quality of the administration, faculty, staff, and students; increase funding from both public and private sources; increase
diversity to include people of all races in South Carolina, North America, and beyond,” Washington said.
The university also introduced a new website that some, including SC State’s President Dr. Andrew Hugine, Jr., hope will increase
interest and attention to the university, especially with the Democratic Presidential Debate coming to the campus on April 26.
“With SC State becoming an international center of attention as a result of the national debates taking place here on our campus,
people from all corners of the globe will be able to learn about our wonderful university online,” said Hugine.
It was also stressed that the current logos used by SC State, such as the university seal and the Bulldog, will continued to be used.
The seal will be limited to university diplomas, certificates, and legal documents, and will be shown as a watermark on letters from
the president and the Board of Trustees. The Bulldog logo will be used by the Athletics Department, the University Bookstore, and
can be used with student or alumni publications or documents.
School officials hope that the new look will change the way the public views SC State today, and into the future.
“Since our founding in 1896, we have reinvented ourselves again and again to keep pace with a rapidly changing society, to better
educate our students and to improve our services for all citizens of our beloved state,” Hugine said. “This is a day of unity, of bridging the university’s past to its future.”

Tips to get “Red Carpet Ready” and have that
Celebrity Confidence!
~Don’t be afraid to stand out...
-It’s all in the attitude. You don’t have to be in front of the camera or at an upscale event to look your best. So put your
best foot forward everywhere you go.
~Be you! If you like something, but a certain other person doesn’t, just wear it!
~Make sure whatever you wear, remember that’s your style, not anyone else’s!
~Confidence not arrogance. Walk upright, be proud of whom you are; you are a star in your own way!

Come Harder: Popular films
that I hate
By Sophia White
Editor
No one on earth knows movies better than me!
This issue The Collegian conducted a poll to find
out the worst movies of all time. I created my
own list:
Number 1 Beloved: What in the world was going
on in this film? The whole thing with the baby reappearing as a
grown woman but still acting like a baby was sick. And seeing
Danny Glover and Oprah Winfrey making love scarred me for
life.
Number 2 Catwoman: The script, film, and production were
actually okay, but sadly I have to say that Halle Berry ruined
it for me. Because Michelle Pfeiffer tore it up as Catwoman in
Batman Forever, Halle should have known she had to bring it.
Pfeiffer was catlike: fierce, ferocious, and sneaky all while still
managing to keep her sexy. Watching Halle’s performance was
a disgrace. Here you have an African-American woman who
has been giving the opportunity to play Catwoman and she is
acting more like a mouse. I don’t even want to elaborate anymore because I’m starting to get upset.
Number 3 Carmen - A Hip Hopera: Why! Why! Why oh why
did somebody decide to remake Carmen in this way? Carmen
was first a successful Broadway musical in 1875 and then later
it was made into the all black musical Carmen Jones in 1954.
Dorothy Dandridge plays a saucy vixen that snatches up Joe
from Cindy Lou without a second thought. Dandridge walks
around with a switch that could kill saying, “Scuse my dust,
gentlemen. The air’s gettin’ mighty unconditioned ‘round
here.” How dare they replace that with non-acting Beyonce in
low riding jeans walking around trying to rap? The true essence of Carmen was lost when they made this film.
Number 4 Baby Boy: Although this movie has some memorable quotes and enjoyable moments, it was the equivalence
of a soggy rag. First of all, I couldn’t tell if it was a comedy or
a drama, and second Tyrese playing the lead role was a bad
casting decision. He was too pretty and yielding for Jodi. I only
started enjoying the movie when Snoop appears, but that of
course was short lived. Good themes and analogies don’t make
good films.
Number 5 The Wash: There’s really not much to say about this
film because I fell asleep through it. It was dreadfully not funny and horribly stupid!

FIND YOUR GIFT AND SERVE IT TO THE
WORLD
A truly successful life is one that brings fulfillment, and not
just temporary reward. It is a life that resonates
and has a lasting impression even after one is
gone. We know of so many great people, but do
we really know the essence of what made them
truly great. What were the things that propelled
them to become who they are? One underlying
principle I have come to realize is that many of
our great leaders found their gift early in life,
and lived the rest of their lives serving that
gift to their communities and the world. We
therefore should take example from them and
By Abdalla Straker
do the same. These are the things that will make
News Editor
us truly happy and fulfilled.
When one thinks of the word “gift,” one thinks of some
great talent like singing, dancing, writing or speaking. Gifts are
sometimes much simpler than those. They are often the things
that we do best. Some people are excellent behind the scene
motivators. No they don’t command a crowd like Al Sharpton,
but they can quietly pull an individual aside, and with words
liberate them into their true potentials. Others are excellent
organizers with talents for detail and completion of projects.
These often become right hand men and women. Others are
resilient in the face of any adversity. These are the ones you want
on your team when you’re doing something new, because they
just don’t know when to quit or give up. What I’m trying to say
is that when trying to find your gift, think simply of the thing
that you do best. These are also often the things we are most
passionate about and gravitate toward.
Each of us has a gift, ability or something that we do like no
one else can. It is to our benefit to find it, develop it and serve it to
others. This is where greatness is born, cultivated and released.
Many people live their whole lives doing things that they don’t
really like to do or don’t really have a passion for. In their later
years, they leave these activities to assume positions that often
pay a lot less, but add a lot more to their lives. Why? If it was all
about the almighty dollar, they wouldn’t. Learn from them. Seek
fulfillment and the things that will leave you truly happy. Life is
too short to do otherwise.
Unlock the leader within. Find your gift and serve it to the
world.

SC State Golfers Finish Second in Bulldog Classic
SC State Sports Information
Host South Carolina State carded a 36-hole team total of 606 (304-302) to finish second in the eight-team Bulldog Classic held Sunday and Monday (Apr. 1-2) at the Country Club of Orangeburg.
Florida A&M had a two-day total of 597 (297-300) to capture first place in the five-year old event, which was held at the par 72,
6,702-yard course for the first time after four years at the Hillcrest Golf Course.
Following the Rattlers and Bulldogs in the tournament were two-time defending champion Bethune-Cookman at 610 (312-298),
Savannah State at 625 (308-317), Alabama State at 629 (321-308), Hampton at 674 (339-335), St. Augustine’s at 714 (367-347) and Winston-Salem State (736 (374-362).
Bulldog sophomore Robert Biggers led the way for SC State with a 36-hole total of 143 (72-71), one-under par, which put him in a
three-way tie for first place with James Petty (69-74) and Jason Still (72-71), both of Florida A&M.
Petty, whose 3-under par 69 on Sunday was the best round of the tournament, won a two-hole playoff to take medalist honors,
ahead of Still and Biggers.
Other Bulldog participants were junior Aaron Robinson, who finished in a tie for 11th with a 10-over par 154 (78-76), junior Matthew Gilliard, who was another stroke back at 155 (75-80), junior Cory Jozefiak at 162 (79-83) and freshman Hector Arroyave at 167
