Are You Interested in Assisting With Fundraising at TMS?
TMS School is a not-for-profit independent school which relies on the support and leadership of our
families to help with fundraising initiatives that support the growth of the School. Families have recently
supported us with the Annual Giving Program that has enabled the School to purchase items such as
new picnic tables for the Toddler Program; digital cameras for each Children’s House classroom; new
athletic uniforms for our sports teams from the Elementary level and above; and microscopes and
digital weighing scales at the College Program. Our families have also supported the Capital Campaign
allowing us to perform needed enhancements at the Bayview Campus as well as the construction of
the Elgin Mills Campus.
As part of our commitment to ongoing improvement, TMS is planning to continue the process of
renewal at the Bayview Campus over the coming years. In addition, as a result of ongoing growth at
the College we are also planning for the construction of a second phase at the Elgin Mills Campus. We
are currently looking for members of the TMS community to share their expertise and efforts as we
continue our fundraising efforts. If you are interested in serving as a member of an Ad hoc Volunteer
Fundraising Committee please contact me, Glenn Zederayko, at 905-889-6882 or at
[email protected] . I would be pleased to talk to you more about your interest in assisting
TMS in this manner.

Children’s House full-day students have
invited their parents to the classrooms
on various days in June to show them
the Montessori materials they are
working with, listen to songs and enjoy
a light refreshment. The students in
their final year of Children’s House have
also been practising a short “musical”,
The Three Little Pigs, for their parents to
enjoy under the direction of our music
specialist, Erin Hill.

Planning Ahead
We have already begun some planning for our Children’s House In-House Visits and Field Trips for the
2012/13 academic year. If you have any suggestions for venues or classroom visitors that are
appropriate for 3-6 year old students, please e-mail me directly at [email protected].
We have currently booked an in-house visit with a nutritionist in October and a field trip on the morning
of Friday November 23rd to the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts. The children will be
delighted with a musical production by Theatreworks USA. The show, entitled If You Give a Mouse a
Cookie, will entertain the children with a series of mini-musicals based on a number of popular
children’s books; for example, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, Amazing Grace, Borreguita and The
Coyote and Imogene’s Antlers to name a few.

TMS Leads the Way to Ottawa!
The last few weeks spent at TMS were filled with a nervous energy. The grade 7 and 8 students were
jittery with excitement through all of their classes, often resulting in annoyed and frustrated teachers.
But no one could blame us for our excitement. We were finally going off on our highly-anticipated road
trip to Ottawa! The bags were packed, the teary ‘goodbye’ kisses over with (finally!) and the seventyfive of us, plus nine teachers, loaded our two coach buses and were on our way. We stopped at
Kingston, where we took a tour of Fort Henry, a military base used during the War of 1812, as well a
boat tour of the 1000 Islands, which was a thrilling experience, especially for the few of us who had
never been on a boat before!
Finally we arrived in Ottawa. We were exhausted from our tours of Kingston’s finest, and stopped at
the “Aboriginal Experience” on Victoria Island for dinner. There, we learned about the different
aboriginal peoples. Our guide, Jason, told us all about the varied culture and traditions of our First
Nations people. After munching on surprisingly tasty strawberry juice and buffalo burgers, we finally
arrived at our hotel.
The next days were spent touring Ottawa, seeing the embassies and the Governor General’s comfy
home. We zip-lined our way over the forests of Quebec and crawled through caverns and tunnels
deep inside the earth, which was a gripping experience for all of us. We toured the Parliament
Buildings and were honoured to meet MP Deepak Obhrai, the Parliamentary Secretary for the Minister
of Defence. We visited the ByWard Market, the War Museum, and the Museum of Civilization,
uncovering little bits and pieces of Canada’s history along the way. We spent evening at San Marco
with other students from all over Canada and the United States. We even got our teachers to dance
with us!
And finally, it was time for us to go home. As much as we loved Ottawa, I could see we were all a little
homesick, so I guess our leave was perfectly timed. After saying goodbye to our lovely tour guides,
Megan and Laurent, we packed our bags and boarded our coach.
Renata Popov, Grade 8 Student
“I flew through the air hearing the buzz of the pulley against the zip-line. My heart was racing as
the wind blew past me, and for a moment I felt like I was flying...It was one of the best
experiences of my life.” Divya Vaghela, Grade 8 Student

TMS School would also like to acknowledge the tireless effort and
commitment of our coaches. Without their help, teams would not be possible.
We would like to specially acknowledge two parent coaches who shared their
expertise and time to run teams at the College – Mr. Michael Maskery and
Mr. Rui Martins.
On behalf of the Athletics Departments at both campuses, congratulations to
all our athletes for a fantastic athletic year.
Congratulations to all the award winners for their personal achievements. We
wish you a great summer. PLAY HARD.
Annual Giving Update
Student athletes premiered the new Athletic Uniforms for both campuses at the recent Athletic
Awards Assembly held at the Elgin Mills Campus. All uniforms were purchased through the generous
donations made by families supporting this year’s TMS Annual Giving Program.
Thank you TMS Community!
TMS Soccer Challenge
Parents, TMS Alumni, members of this year’s graduating class, and staff played an extremely
enjoyable and competitive game of soccer at this year’s TMS Soccer Challenge. Thanks to all of
the players for making it so much fun!
The Importance of Play
The beautiful weather has arrived and I hope it is here to stay! With a desire to be outside in the
sunshine and warm temperatures, I am reminded of the joys of childhood play. It is interesting that
most of us do not remember the details of how we learned to read or write, but we remember all of
the games we played with our families and during recess at school.
With today’s hectic lives we are finding it challenging to establish healthy lifestyle patterns for our
children (and ourselves). The Family Guide to Physical Activity provided by Health Canada states that
“one half of Canadian children are not active enough for healthy growth and development.” We need
to value the importance of play by changing our lifestyles to incorporate fun and physical activity. The
results will be people enjoying greater overall physical and emotional health, a balanced life and the
establishment of family traditions. Organized sports are wonderful; however, it is also important to
provide young children with unstructured time for imagination and exploration. This can be
accomplished with simple measures like taking a family walk after dinner to the local park and playing
I Spy during the journey. Sharing favourite games from our childhood is another way to excite children
(and ourselves) about play; for example, skipping, double dutch, hopscotch, What Time is it Mr. Wolf?
and increasing their repertoire of songs, riddles and incantations, that were previously passed on to us
by oral tradition.
Studies reveal that children who are more physically active are also more intellectually fit. “Being active
feeds the brain, giving active children an academic advantage over their peers who are more
sedentary.” (Dr. Mark Tremblay, Active Healthy Kids Canada). By providing our children with an
enriched education at TMS and coupling this with wonderful play time at home we are providing our
children with a clear advantage and setting them up for success in all areas of their lives!
