ATHLETIC
GOALS
Rob Marshall - Mt. Rainier
R
ob Marshall is having the year of his life. A dedicated marathon runner, he ran a personal best in the
New York Marathon and qualified for the Boston
Marathon. He climbed Mt. Rainier and spent three
weeks hiking at high altitudes in Nepal. But all of
that almost didn’t happen.
After running a marathon last spring, Rob took a month off
to recover. When he returned to training, Rob found that he had
a nagging pain in one quadriceps. Rest didn’t help and physical
therapy didn’t help. Rob says, “I had seen Whitaker Therapy and
thought it was worth a try. I went for one session with Parker
and, within an hour, that whole area felt a tremendous amount
better.” He was able to begin running again within a week and
continue his training and travel schedule. As he returned to his intense training schedule, Rob saw Parker periodically through the
summer and fall. In August he climbed Mt. Rainier; in November,
he ran his personal best in the New York Marathon; and then he
hiked in Nepal.
Parker Whitaker says that the Muscle Release Technique he
uses has proven to be a quick, effective way of releasing
muscle pain, whether it is caused by repetitive use or another
type of injury. He figures out what caused the muscle to become dysfunctional and works the muscle and soft tissue to
release the pain. Then, he says, he teaches the client how to
treat the pain at home. It works because he focuses on treating the cause of the pain, not just on short-term pain relief.
This therapy is effective for all kinds of injuries. Carpal tunnel
syndrome, shoulder issues, neck and back pain, tendonitis,
and knee issues are some of the issues he treats often.
Rob uses the stretches Parker has taught him and returns
to Parker after an extreme challenge. “Coming down from
Mt. Rainier puts a tremendous strain on the legs,” he says.
Parker helped remove the aches and pains caused by the
climb. After the New York Marathon, instead of the fatigue
and soreness he had come to expect, he felt “fantastic.” He
says the muscle release technique has helped him maintain
his training schedule and prevent injury. Rob’s not planning
on slowing down. With Parker’s help, he plans on training
and competing for a long time to come.

E.J. Penniman:
Penniman Avenue - 1920’s
E.J. Penniman:
Politician, Businessman,
Community Leader
W
e all know Penniman Avenue, The Penn
Theatre and the many businesses named
Penniman in Plymouth. But who was the
man whose name we use so often?
Born in New York in 1804, E.J. Penniman
arrived in Plymouth in 1840. He immediately purchased a large
tract of land and opened a country store and a school, known
as the Seminary, on Church St. He donated the school and its
lot to the school system in 1853. Today, Central Middle School
sits on the site.
Elected to the U.S. Congress as a Whig in 1851, he served
until 1853 but did not run for re-election. Active in the anti-
slavery movement, he was a member of the assembly that met
in Jackson, Mich., in 1854 to oppose the opening of the West
to slavery. The convention passed resolutions to fight slavery
and adopt the name “Republican” for the new party formed
there. In 1861, Penniman and another Plymouth businessman,
Henry Fralick, raised, equipped and filled the muster roll of the
first Michigan company in the Civil War.
Always a good businessman, Penniman was named president of the First National Bank of Plymouth in 1871. Charles
Bennett, who later became president of the Daisy Manufacturing Company, remembered him as “the richest man in Plymouth” and reminisced about the Christmas mornings when
Penniman would “give a silver quarter to every boy and girl
who came in and wished him a Merry Christmas.”
E.J. Penniman is buried in Riverside Cemetery. His house
still stands on Penniman Avenue, where it serves as the rectory
for Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church. His name lives
on in Plymouth landmarks. And his contributions to local and
national history live on, as well.

describe their dream of
opening a toy store, they
say, “We wanted to sell fun
things, things that captivate
imagination and encourage creativity and
thought.” At the Genuine Toy Company,
they are doing just that.
The Genuine Toy Company is a toy store, but it is
not a store only for small
children, or even only for
children. The Dares make
a point of stocking unique
items, things you won’t
find at a big box retailer.
High-quality items for a
wide range of budgets.
Items from local authors and artists are on
display, as well as retro toys (Remember
Lincoln Logs? Magic pens?), science kits,
fossils and minerals, and a wide variety of
games perfect for family game night. You

Ronald P. Adelman, DPM, PLLC
Experts in State-of-the-Art Care
A
s marathon runners, Drs. Ron and Vanessa Adelman know that healthy feet and ankles are key
to a healthy, active lifestyle. As doctors, they
know how important it is to educate the patient
about all available treatment options in order to
help the patient select the best treatment option for the patient’s lifestyle requirements.
Every patient’s foot issues are different. The foot is a complex structure and problems may be inherited, caused by injury or acquired in the course of everyday stresses and strains.
The Drs. Adelman work with each patient to thoroughly assess treatment needs and educate the patient about the condition and all treatment options. They then help the patient
select the best treatment option for his or her lifestyle, tailoring the treatment to the individual’s needs.
The Drs. Adelman draw on extensive training and research
to provide state-of-the-art care for patients with all types of
foot and ankle injuries or other conditions. Dr. Ron is one of
few podiatric surgeons with double board certification. Both
doctors have D.P.M. degrees from The Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine (affiliate of Case Western) and intensive, indepth residency training at local hospitals. They attend medi-
cal and surgical education conferences on a regular basis and
are actively involved in medical research. Dr. Ron is currently
on the podiatric training committee at the Detroit Medical
Center; he is also a member of the MPMA (Michigan Podiatric
Medical Association) Scientific Committee. Both doctors have
published several research papers.
Services Include:
• Sports medicine
• Foot and ankle trauma
• Arthroscopic foot and ankle surgery
• Adult and pediatric reconstructive surgery

ROM
Fitness
R
A Workout to Fit Your Lifestyle
Terry Riga of Plymouth - Age 49
OM Fitness offers an effective workout that fits
your busy lifestyle. Whether you are looking to
trim, tone or strengthen, ROM’s four-minute workout will give you all of the benefits of 20 minutes
of stretching, 20 to 45 minutes of cardiovascular
exercise and 30 to 60 minutes of weight training.
Shari Franko joined ROM over a year ago. She says, “Exercise has never been my strong suit. While I know
it’s important, I struggled to find an activity I really like and more importantly, I hadn’t been able
to figure out how to fit exercise into my schedule.” Attracted by the promise of a four-minute
workout, she gave ROM a try. Now, she says, she
mixes ROM workouts with tennis, walking and
using free weights “My flexibility and strength have increased,
my muscles feel, and look, more toned and as a result, I’m
stronger and feel good about my almost 50-year old body.”
Carron Koester, on the other hand, was already very active when she started going to ROM. She plays tennis regularly
and attends Pilates and exercise classes. The uneven demands
of tennis were starting to take a toll, though. She developed
chronic neck and back pain. She says she was skeptical at first
but noticed improvement quickly. Her back pain is gone and
she doesn’t have to watch calories to maintain her weight. She
says, “I used to play tennis for exercise. Now, with ROM, I play
tennis for fun – and I’m a much better tennis player, too.”
Jane McCourt also initially tried ROM to address pain. Jane
is a university professor and a Bikram yoga instructor. In addition to yoga five or six times a week, she walks and does some
cardio work. But none of that helped with the leg cramps that
she developed from the long weekly drives required by her
job. She says, “I don’t have time for weight training. I need
something that fits my schedule.” Once she started at ROM
Fitness, the cramps disappeared. Her muscles
have gained in both strength and endurance.
All of the women fit ROM workouts into
their schedules, stopping by anywhere from
three to six times per week, often on the way
to work or other appointments. They say that
being able to work out in street clothes without
changing also makes the workout more convenient than a traditional gym visit. As Shari Franko says, “At the start, it’s hard
to wrap your head around this crazy looking fitness machine,
but I trusted their knowledge and expertise, put it to the test,
and saw results.”

Creating
Memories
Sweet Afton
Tea Room
S
weet Afton Tea Room visitors describe high tea as an experience,
something to be savored and
shared. Step into the tea room on
any day and you are likely to find
at least one family group, often three or four
generations gathered around a table, from
great-grandma to the young girl excited to
join in the tradition. Adult customers often
say that they first visited the Sweet Afton Tea
Room with their grandmothers and have returned to relive those memories and create
new ones.
Returning visitors will find the same
friendly, charming atmosphere that has enchanted visitors for the last twenty years.
The traditions that have made it a mainstay
of Plymouth culture for the last twenty years
have also earned the Sweet Afton Tea Room
the honor of being named one of the top
100 tea rooms in the USA by TeaMap.com.
The tea menu includes teas from around
the world, with an emphasis on English tea
imported from London. In addition to a va-

riety of savories and desserts, the full-service
restaurant offers home-cooked traditional
English fare, including shepherd’s pie and beef
Wellington.
The tea room hosts special events, such as
tea tastings, etiquette lessons, holiday high
teas and book signings. Groups can also reserve the tea room for bridal and baby showers, birthday parties and other events.

F
rom the late 1800s to the late 1950s, Plymouth
was the air rifle capital of the world. BB guns made
in Plymouth were sold around the world and have
become the stuff of popular culture today.
Plymouth’s BB gun history began in 1885,
when the Markham Manufacturing Company, a producer of
tanks and cisterns, introduced the “Chicago”, a “toy” gun
made of wood and brass. The Chicago was the first air rifle
made in volume and sold at a popular price. The Chicago and
its followers, the Prince and the King, were wildly popular, but
another company soon surpassed Markham in air rifle sales.
The Plymouth Windmill Company introduced an air rifle of
its own, made entirely of metal, in 1886. The story goes that
when Lewis Cass Hough, president of the company, first tried
the gun, he said, “Boy, that’s a daisy!” The name stuck. For a
couple years, a Daisy was given to everyone who purchased
a Plymouth windmill. The company began selling the Daisy in
1891 and it became so popular that the company quit making
windmills in 1895 and changed its name to the Daisy Manufacturing Company.
The Daisy BB gun went on to become world famous. The
Red Ryder model, introduced in 1939, became a household
word with over 9 million sold. The Red Ryder name is carried
on in the movie A Christmas Story made in 1983, and still
popular today. Based on a series of short stories by Jean Shepherd, the movie details a young boy’s desire for a Red Ryder
BB gun.
To learn more about the Red Ryder BB gun and its Plymouth history, visit the Plymouth Historical Museum’s Daisy Air
Rifle Factory and air rifle collection exhibit.
