Herschel, Herschel, Herschel the Georgia Bulldogs are losing 15-0
and the crowd wants Herschel Walker the youngster out of Johnson
county high school the coach motions toward herschel and he goes in, the
crowd erupts. The ball is handed to Herschel he finds a hole he’s running
over people Herschel running over people oh you Herschel
Walker.Herschel Walker is mostly known for his amazing football career
but Herschel should be known for many more reasons.
Career
2,878 all purpose yards in only his third year ever in pro football! I
would consider Herschel Walker a football great. Herschel is one of the
best running backs to play pro football.
It all started at Johnson county High school but he was really
noticed at Georgia when he had 1616 in his first year of college football he
also led the team to a Sec championship and a national championship
and set the ncaa Freshman rushing record. Many thought it was
deserving of a Heisman trophy but fellow running back George Rogers.
But Herschels second year was even better than the first he lead the team
to its second straight SEC championship and went to its second straight
national championship but lost to pitt
in the final seconds on a Dan Marino
pass. People thought he would
definitely win the Heisman Trophy but
once again he didn't win the Heisman.
His third year at Georgia he didn't just
win the Heisman he earned it said the
Espn 30 for 30. They won its third
straight SEC championship and went
to its third straight National
championship but lost to penn st. mainly because their defense shut
down Herschel. After the season people were hoping he’d be back for a
Heisman and hopefully a national championship but that wouldn't
happen he signed a contract with a new american football league the
USFL.
He signed with the New Jersey Generals Herschel came right out of
the gates with 1,812 rushing yards and 489 pass receiving yards. He
averaged 4.4 yards per rush and 9.2 yards per pass.Soon Businessman
Donald Trump bought the Generals mostly because of Herschel. Entering
his second year of his pro career he was determined to prove his point as
a pro football player. He did just that with 1,339 yards and 21
touchdowns. Herschel Walker was a legend he could do 300 pushups and
300 sit ups without stopping. When Herschel had 412 carries it was still
only his first year, they trusted him that much! Herschel Walker had an
impact on USFL football. Going into his third year of pro football he was
a record setter and he was ready. He set incredible records with 2,411
rushing yards, 438 carries and 467 pass yards. It turned out to be his best
year ever but after the year the USFL went under many NFL teams were
looking to sing the best players and Herschel was a top pick.
The Cowboys were looking to get better and Herschel could any
team better. The Cowboys went right after Herschel picking him right
away. It was Herschel's first year as a NFL. This time he did not come
right out of the gates he only had 737 yards which pretty good for only
having 151 carries and the team was awful. But Herschel wanted to be
great. The next year he was once again under 1000 yards he only had 891
yards but it still showed throughout the team they only had 3 wins.
Herschel Did his best each year but football isn't a one man sport and the
offense is only on the field half of the game or less. In his third year
Herschel stepped it up with 1514 yards and but the team did not step it
up. The cowboys staff felt they needed a change. They traded Herschel to
the minnesota vikings for 5 players and 8 draft picks. They did it all for
Herschel 13 PLAYERS for one. The trade didn't quite work out for the
vikings he was under 1000 each year with 915 yards
and 770 yards in his two years with the vikings. After
8 years of pro football and 3 years of college football
Herschel decided it was time to retire from the game
of football.
After all those years of football he had 21085
yards and 127 touchdowns he still works out every
day and refuse to touch a weight. This Makes me
think that Herschel was very determined to play pro
football and he didn't just play football he was one of
football's greatest players. Childhood Herschel Walker had a very rough childhood but Herschel
childhood made him what he is today he used his anger to make a great
football player but all that anger led to the development of DID. Herschels
childhood started out just fine. But it was all ruined when he went to
school, he thought it would be just fine even fun he looked forward to it
he was very smart but he loved to learn. But from the first day he was
made fun of and teased because he was overweight and stuttered. Every
single day this this happened and really the older he got the more harsh
the teasing got. But Herschel did have fun he always and he would just
write poetry he loved to write poetry he also rough housed with his
brothers and sisters. at school he had great grades his dad would always
give him a quarter for lunch and every day herschel would give away his
quarter to get someone to talk with him and as long as the kd had the
snack he would keep talking with him but once they finished their snack
they would be back to calling him fat and make fun of him. Herschel
always said he only needed that short minute. Also Herschel was always
to scared to go out to recess but on the last day of 6th grade he decided
he would go out to recess he just walked around with his head down and
Herschel said “if you're the one walking around with your head down
you're the one you're gonna get picked on” and he did Herschel got beat
up by kids years older than him. Right after that he decided he would
never get beat up again he asked his brothers track coach Tom Jordan
what he could do to get bigger stronger and faster. Coach Jordan said do
sit ups do pushups run sprints and to this day he still does just that.
Going to school he was still chubby but you're going to
automatically get big and strong but even with school he kept up his
workouts. Before school after school he always worked out and he still
kept up with his studies and did good in school. Herschel was in 7th
grade and with the way his school went he was getting ready for high
school and herschel was in great shape by now and his stuttering had just
about went away he worked really hard on that to by reading books aloud
to himself in the mirror it was just another workout to him. Football was
natural to Herschel but really anybody who was really strong and very fast
is going to be good at a sport like football. Before he knew it he was in
high school but since he was so young he didnt even make the varsity
team he was on the junior varsity team the next year he he made the
varsity team but he was the third string running back for the johnson
county high school football team 2 times the starting and the backup
running back got hurt and he came in and got 200 + yards finally he got
the starting job. Each year he played at Johnson county football he
gained over 2000 yards. From the end of the JR. year to the time he
signed a contract saying he would go to college college scouts were all
over him.
Herschel had no idea what college he wanted to go to. but he did
know where he did not want to go he did not want to go to alabama
because their offense was a wishbone attack where the backs started
crouched down where Herschel knew he did better standing up. He did
not want to go to miami or florida because they both threw a lot of passes
and Herschel wanted the ball. He was even offered scholarships from
Yale, Harvard and Princeton mostly because of his 93% average but
schools in the ivy league are not allowed to give sports scholarships and
Herschel wanted to play football. But finally it all came down to Georgia
they had the perfect offense and were willing to give him the ball his
sister even went there. Coach Dooley was Georgias football coach he said
that he did not think he would do much because he went to a small high
school but coach dooley was in for a big surprise. Herschel Walker had a
childhood led to many things, good and bad it was good because he used
his anger to become a great football player but also all that anger led to
the development of DID (dissociative identity disorder) which is what I
will talk about next.
DID
Herschel Walker has DID(dissociative identity disorder). This
gives you many personalities. Herschel has been through many challenges
and I believe DID is the hardest one. Herschel
developed DID near the end of his football career this
happened because of all the trauma that went on in his
childhood and all the anger that built up inside him
football was his coping mechanism all the contact and
hitting let him release that anger when his football
career ended there was no way to let that anger out
without having a negative impact. So other
personalities came out like his bad side when his bad
side came out his wife Cindy divorced him they worked together to get to
Dr.Mengadze who helped Herschel with his DID Herschel started talking
about what caused the trauma and that helped out even more. But
Herschel still had anger and still had no way to let it out. So Herschel
became an MMA fighter as a man in his fifties with MMA and Dr.
Mengadze Herschel was almost back to his old self and according to
ESPN 30 for 30 about Herschel, Herschel visited GEorgia to help them
train. This makes me think Herschel has been fighting DID and it is a
fight he has almost won.
Herschel Walker has been traded to the minnesota vikings for 5
players and 8 draft picks a deal that stunned people across america.
Herschel never won a MVP or a superbowl but I believe he earned peoples
respect so next time you see someone that is overweight or a problem like
stuttering don't make fun of them they might just become a star.
