A Letter from MOCA’s Executive
Director and Board President
Since MOCA was founded in 1999, we’ve been marking milestones, big and small.
There were many milestones in that first year of MOCA. The first assembly of the MOCA Board of
Directors. The first public MOCA meeting, with 30 women in attendance. And of course, the first annual Silent No More Walk/Run for Ovarian Cancer.
As MOCA continues to grow each year, our milestones only get larger and more significant. And
2012 was truly a year of milestones, as our organization achieved new highs in research funding,
event participation, health professionals reached and effectiveness of awareness campaigns.
In 2012, we granted the largest amount of research funding ever – with $690,000 going to ovarian cancer researchers at Mayo Clinic and the University of Minnesota. MOCA received the largest
single gift in its history, with more than $500,000 shared from the estate of one MOCA supporter.
In total, we’ve now provided nearly $4 million to nearly 50 ovarian cancer research projects based
here in Minnesota.

Alliance is a statewide non-profit
dedicated to raising awareness,
providing education and support
to women and families impacted
by ovarian cancer and funding the
research needed to detect the disease
early and treat it properly.
We also continued to serve the needs of women and families with ovarian cancer, by providing
education and support through our support groups and MOCA Living Well meetings. We expanded
our medical education programming in 2012, as we included outreach and education to physician
assistant and nurse practitioner programs.
And we continued to hit milestones as we grew our signature MOCA events, including the 13th Annual Silent No More Walk/Run in September 2012. To date, this was the largest Walk/Run ever, with
the most participants and more raised for MOCA’s research, support and programming.
But behind these amazing milestones lies a truth: that we couldn’t do all this without you, our
MOCA supporters. As we look back on 2012 in the pages of this report, we owe a debt of gratitude
to the MOCA volunteers and supporters who provide both time and funding to make these milestones a reality. Because of you, MOCA is here for Minnesota women and families, and continues to
make a difference in the course of this disease.

Milestones in Research
Research funding has always been a top priority for MOCA, and that was never more apparent
than in 2012.
MOCA distributed $690,000 to Minnesota ovarian cancer researchers during 2012 – a new
milestone for our organization. These innovative and promising research projects are making
Minnesota a leader in the country towards finding an earlier diagnosis, more effective
treatments and, one day, a cure for ovarian cancer.
MOCA funded several promising research projects during 2012, including:

Patt’s Legacy
We all hope to leave a legacy of good works when we leave this world. And Patricia
Threinen, or Patt as she was better known, was able to do just that with a legacy
gift to MOCA.
The Meaning of Research
Ovarian cancer research isn’t just a job to
Dr. Amy Skubitz. To her, it’s personal.
As the daughter of a woman diagnosed
with ovarian cancer, Dr. Skubitz understands the urgency tied to finding new
discoveries to diagnose and treat ovarian cancer. As a University of Minnesota
researcher, her passion lies in making a
difference against the disease, and she is
grateful to MOCA for making cutting-edge
research possible.
“MOCA provides the start-up money for
testing new ideas. The findings from these
projects gives us leverage to compete for
additional grants that lead to new discoveries about ovarian cancer. This would not be
possible without MOCA,” said Dr. Skubitz.
MOCA has provided funding to Dr. Skubitz
for several research projects, including a
2012 project that investigates the possible
presence of ovarian cancer biomarkers in
Pap tests.
A MOCA member and volunteer, Patt contributed her time to the Silent No
More Walk/Run for many years. She was first diagnosed with ovarian cancer
15 years ago, and during her fight against the disease, developed a passion for
research. Patt understood the need for continued research to make advancements
against this disease. It was a passion for her until her passing in August 2012.
Patt’s estate provided $500,000 to MOCA to distribute to three University of Minnesota
researchers, with the hopes that they will further advancements in ovarian cancer research.
Through her gift, Patt’s memory will live on as she makes a difference for women diagnosed with ovarian
cancer in the future.

MOCA Milestones: Medical Education
Education through a Personal Story
There are few things more memorable than a well told story. And while an education can
certainly be found in books and lectures, MOCA knows the impact that a personal story
can have on the healthcare professionals who we educate through our medical education
programming.

That’s why we enlist the help of ovarian cancer survivors, to tell their stories in front of
healthcare students and professionals. Our goal is to educate all Minnesota healthcare
professionals on the symptoms and risk factors of ovarian cancer. We do this through
our three main medical education programs: Survivors Teaching Students®, Reaching
Healthcare Professionals and Reaching Residents program.
MOCA has dozens of survivors ready to tell their story to
healthcare professionals and students. Ellen Kleinbaum, an
ovarian and breast cancer survivor, is one of them.
As a survivor-speaker for MOCA’s medical education
programing, Ellen frequently tells her story so others can
learn from it. And she knows just how important that is.
Milestones in Medical Education
“The program has given me the opportunity to speak to medical students, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and so many others
throughout the state. And MOCA continues to widen our reach each
year. We’ve presented before groups ranging from 20 people to groups
as large as 200. No matter the size, we survivors know that each audience member is important.”
In 2012, we reached new heights with our medical education program as MOCA expanded our outreach to both Physician Assistant and Nurse Practitioner programs. This included MOCA’s presence
at the Minnesota Nurse Practitioner Association conference, where we hosted an informational booth
and spoke to the 100+ conference attendees.
Reaching Medical Professionals through Journals
2012 was a banner year for medical education, as we expanded our programming into
new fields throughout the state.
By expanding our programming, we were able to educate more than 2,000 healthcare professionals
throughout Minnesota during 2012.
When working to get our message out to medical professionals, MOCA gets creative. In 2012, MOCA worked
with several MOCA Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) members to write articles that detailed the symptoms and risk factors of ovarian cancer.
Those highlights include:
• Speaking before 275 Minnesota medical students about ovarian cancer.
By working with MOCA staff to write and submit articles about ovarian cancer, we raised awareness on the
subject in the three statewide medical journals, and reached a combined audience of 73,000.
• Educating 30 physician assistants at Augsburg College.
Three MAC members helped us write and submit the following articles during 2012:
• Educating 30 nurse practitioners at Metropolitan State University.

MOCA Milestones: Support Groups
The Value of MOCA Support
A diagnosis of ovarian cancer can be a scary, lonely time. But with the support and programming
that MOCA offers, women throughout Minnesota know that they aren’t alone.
Immediately after a diagnosis, a woman can be connected with a long-term survivor and
gynecologic oncology nurse through the MOCA Connections meetings. Or she can choose
to find support over the phone, through the MOCA Mentor program. A woman in greater
Minnesota can find support through one of the several outstate support groups MOCA helps
coordinate.
MOCA Mentor Training
Finding support is as simple as picking up the phone thanks
to the MOCA Mentor program. Always a hallmark support program of MOCA’s, in 2012 the MOCA Mentor program served more than 30 women by connecting them
with MOCA Mentors who could offer support and insight.
Always striving to better meet the needs of women with ovarian
cancer, MOCA hosted a MOCA Mentor training session in February 2012. This session, hosted by 24-year
ovarian cancer survivor and licensed social worker Brenda Hartman, provided guidance on answering
questions and offering insight to women interested in seeking help from a Mentor. Twelve women were in
attendance at the MOCA Mentor training session, and MOCA continues to use the training guide when
bringing in new MOCA Mentors.
Young Survivors Network
In 2012, the Young Survivor Network support group was
nimble in meeting the needs of pre-menopausal women
impacted by ovarian and other gynecologic cancers.
The group met on a twice-monthly basis throughout 2012 and welcomed several new members. The
YSN also worked to try new outings and events,
such as pulling a group of YSN members together
to model Athleta clothing and raise awareness at the
Athleta Diva Dash in November 2012.

Two years ago, Kathy’s world changed. The Minnesota woman went from being the picture of health
to facing a Stage III ovarian cancer diagnosis.
She knew she needed information. She knew she
needed support. And she knew she could turn to
MOCA. Through a MOCA support group, she met
other women with ovarian cancer for the very first
time.
“It was huge to me – to see these vibrant, smiling
women, all the things I wanted to be. I left armed
with information and the knowledge that support
was there whenever I needed it.”
Having received so much support from MOCA, she
now gives back, whether it’s through fundraising
for MOCA or by simply providing a caring word to
another woman who needs it. MOCA was there for
Kathy, like MOCA has been there for hundreds of
women before her.

MOCA Milestones:
Educating the Public
MOCA Debuts “Teal Together” Blog
Educating the public has always been a core mission of MOCA’s and that was evident through
our work in 2012.
Educating the public about timely news on ovarian cancer is part of MOCA’s public education
strategy – and the launch of the Teal Together blog in 2012 was part of that.
Whether it’s at a MOCA Living Well meeting or tabling opportunity at a health fair or event, there
are so many ways that MOCA educates the public about ovarian cancer.
Debuting in April 2012, the goal of MOCA’s Teal Together blog is to provide updates, news
and profile the voices of the Minnesota ovarian cancer community. Guest authors provided
their insight into how ovarian cancer has impacted their lives and what’s on their minds.

MOCA Living Well Meetings
In 2012, MOCA debuted a new name and new format for our public education meetings. Renamed
MOCA Living Well meetings, the goal of the meeting was to ensure that survivors and anyone impacted
by an ovarian cancer diagnosis live well through all stages of their journey.
In an effort to make the meetings as convenient and easy for all interested to attend, for the first time
ever, in 2012 MOCA hosted two longer-formats, Saturday workshops to get in-depth into topics. These
meetings were a success, as we saw a large turn-out for both.
In all, MOCA was able to educate nearly 150 people at our MOCA Living Well meetings in 2012.

MOCA Milestones: Awareness Efforts
Tie it Teal by the Numbers:
MOCA works to get the word out about the symptoms of ovarian cancer in many creative
ways. To try to rise above the crowd and get our message through, we know that it takes a
little creativity. 2012 was truly a year of teal, as we debuted a successful new public awareness
campaign that spread teal throughout every corner of Minnesota.

2012 was a banner year for ovarian cancer awareness, as we saw the state of Minnesota go teal
thanks to MOCA’s new Tie it Teal campaign. Designed to raise awareness and start a conversation
about ovarian cancer, Tie it Teal centered on teal shoelaces to raise awareness.
MOCA gave away free pairs of laces to youth sports teams throughout the state – more than 115
teams in all! Many schools took the effort even farther by coordinating awareness nights to help
spread the word about ovarian cancer by including information in programs, selling Tie it Teal tshirts and handing out symptom cards.
Tie it Teal made an impact with Minnesota’s major and minor league teams, as well, as the Minnesota Twins, Saint Paul Saints and Rochester Honkers all coordinated Tie it Teal Nights.
Tie it Teal Spirit!
At MOCA’s Annual Awards Night in late 2012, one team was singled out
for their wonderful work on the Tie it Teal campaign with a Tie it Teal
Spirit Award. The Apple Valley Eastview High School girls’ volleyball
team took the campaign to new heights by wearing the laces, handing out symptom cards to the crowds during September and talking
with local media about their involvement.
The school also invited an Eastview alumni, Siri Hill, to talk about
ovarian cancer. Hill lost her mother to ovarian cancer and was
inspired by the involvement of her former team.

Run, even just spotting them out and about – was a huge show
of support for families impacted by ovarian cancer. I’m grateful

35W Bridge Turns Teal!
For anyone impacted by ovarian cancer, it was truly a sight to
see.
As part of MOCA’s Tie it Teal campaign effort, on Friday,
Sept. 8, Minneapolis’ 35W bridge was lit up in teal for the
very first time. As Minnesota’s 5th busiest bridge and an iconic
landmark, the teal lights were a true show of support for women
with ovarian cancer.
The lighting of the bridge received widespread media attention,
including stories on Minnesota Public Radio, KSTP.com and
WCCO-TV.
MOCA Float Spreads
Awareness
Always a cornerstone of MOCA’s public
awareness outreach, in 2012 the MOCA
Float was used in several new parades
and events during 2012, including
Minnesota’s largest and one of the most
historic parades: St. Paul’s Grand Old
Day Parade in June. At this parade, more
than 3,000 symptom cards were handed
out to the crowd to help raise awareness and
educate them about the disease. The MOCA
Float also had a presence at the Minnesota State Fair
parade in 2012.

MOCA Milestones: Making an
Impact through the Media
In 2012, MOCA made a splash in the local and statewide media by being mentioned or included
in more than 40 stories across print, television, radio and online outlets. MOCA was also featured
in a dedicated ovarian cancer awareness supplement in the Pioneer Press.
Besides raising the profile of MOCA and our survivors and supporters, our goal in securing media
placements is to raise awareness about the symptoms of ovarian cancer, as well.

Teresa Faust

Having been on the “other side of
the pen” for most of her career, it isn’t easy
for Teresa Faust to talk about herself.
However, the Nisswa woman and
busy community activist’s extensive experience coupled with an incredibly optimistic
attitude, leads to a story anyone would
want to read.
Faust and her husband, Dave, moved to
Lake Country in 2001, after successful
careers in the metro area. A graduate of the
University of Minnesota with a degree in
journalism, she worked in advertising, marketing, and public relations for organizations
such as Valleyfair, the Minneapolis
Aquatennial, a gourmet foods publication,
and as a writer for former University of
Minnesota President Mark Yudof.
“Little did I know at the time,” says
Faust, “but all of this variety gave me a great
base for working in Nisswa on both a profes-

Shortly after their move to the area,
Faust worked in community relations for
Bethany Good Samaritan. Not long after,
she accepted a position as director of the
Nisswa Chamber of Commerce and she
immersed herself in the community.
“When we moved here, I really wanted
this to be my home,” she says. “And when
it’s your home, I think you should be a part
of the community.” She began seeking volunteer opportunities and attended many
community events solo to make connections. “I’m a big girl. I can do that,” she
laughs. “I just started to meet people and it
went from there.”
Her volunteer involvement includes her
current role as president of the Nisswa
Women’s Club, time spent on the Nisswa
Chamber’s board of directors, member and
secretary of the Nisswa Area Women of
Today, member of the Nisswa City
Planning and Zoning Commission, board
member for Good Samaritan Home Care
and Hospice, as well as coordinator of the
annual “Love Lights a Tree” event to benefit Good Samaritan, held in conjunction
with the Nisswa City of Lights Festival
each November.
No wonder she was recognized as the
2010 Nisswa Citizen of the Year, an honor
she modestly acknowledges.
“I was so honored. I really was,” she
says. “I’m not saying that to be corny—I was
really surprised. I enjoy giving my time to
the community. And it’s never about me. I
just like to do it.”
That same selflessness and positive attitude have shone through even during some
of Faust’s darkest hours, a true testament to
this amazing woman’s strength of character.
In December 2006, Faust was diagnosed
with advanced ovarian cancer. In one week’s
time, a large tumor had been detected, diagnosed, and removed in a series of events that
left her head spinning.
“It was really a surprise to me because I
had always had my yearly physicals and had
been fine. And I just didn’t know anything
about ovarian cancer. Even though I’m a
woman, I didn’t. I had this idea in my head
that when I had surgery and they took it out,
the cancer was gone. But it doesn’t exactly
work that way.”
Six weeks post-surgery, Faust began an
aggressive schedule of chemotherapy. Over
time, the cancer has recurred, necessitating
regular chemo treatments.
While many may retreat from a busy
life of volunteering following such a traumatic diagnosis, Faust’s resolve strengthened—leading her to start the area’s first, and
only, ovarian cancer support group.
“At first, I really didn’t think about a
support group or anything like that,” she
says. “I had so much to learn and deal with
and understand. But I was at a seminar at
Mayo and discovered a group called MOCA
(Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance). They
had support groups based in the Twin Cities
and Rochester, but nothing this far north.”
And with that, Faust began the “Team
Teal of the North” MOCA support group in
January 2009. The group meets monthly

MOCA Milestones: Annual Events
MOCA’s three major events are the cornerstone of our outreach and fundraising efforts. Each
year, they draw thousands of participants, centered on one major cause: changing the course of
ovarian cancer.
In 2012, MOCA’s raised $390,000 through these events, which goes to research, support and
programming for women impacted by ovarian cancer.
These events truly made milestones in 2012: attracting more participants than ever, raising more
money than ever – and of course, striving to reach a new audience that can carry on the message
of ovarian cancer awareness and advancement.
Mid Summer Night’s Gala
Always a signature summer event, the 2012 Mid Summer Night’s Gala was a festivity like no other.
With a sold-out crowd of 350 attendees, MOCA supporters came from throughout the state to take part in this entertaining and inspirational event. KSTP Anchor
Vineeta Sawkar shone as the event emcee, while MOCA Team Teal of the North
representative Teresa Faust gave a keynote speech about her work with MOCA in
the Brainerd Lakes area of the state. MOCA officially launched the Tie it Teal campaign by debuting the Tie it Teal awareness video at the event. The Gala was a highprofile event and received coverage in the Star-Tribune, Minneapolis-St. Paul Magazine
and Minnesota Business.
Molly Cade Scramble for Ovarian Cancer
More than 230 participants came out to Brackett’s Crossing Country Club in Lakeville, Minn. for the Molly Cade Scramble for Ovarian Cancer. 2012 marked the 12th
year of this event that draws golfers of all abilities in the morning and afternoon
tournaments. Many golfers make it an annual event as they play in honor or in
memory of a loved one.
Both the Mid Summer Night’s Gala and the Molly Cade Scramble raised nearly
$140,000 combined.
13th Annual Silent No More
Walk/Run for Ovarian Cancer
The Silent No More Walk/Run is MOCA’s major annual event. Each year, thousands of survivors, friends
and family members come to Edina’s Rosland Park
to run, walk, fundraise and show support for the
women impacted by ovarian cancer.
2012 was a true milestone year for the Walk/Run,
with a record number of attendees – more than
3,300 in all came together to make a difference
for ovarian cancer research, support and programming. In addition, there were more than 150 fundraising teams working together to support MOCA
– including the largest team which included more
than 100 members.
In all, the event netted a record $250,000 for MOCA.

Community Events
In 2012, our supporters had a milestone year when planning these
events.
Calling All Angels
This annual awareness-raising initiative educates the public on ovarian cancer.
And in 2012, Calling All Angels was again a fun, engaging way to raise awareness and funding for ovarian cancer. MOCA was also able to use it as a way to
engage the media, as a signature Calling All Angels tea party was the subject
of a series of live shots on the KSTP morning show in mid-February.
In total, the Calling All Angels initiative raised more than $9,000.
Final Stretch, Inc. Races
What began as a seed of an idea – coordinate a few races to benefit MOCA –
grew to so much more than that during 2012.
Final Stretch, Inc. continued to establish our partnership through three races
benefitting MOCA in 2012: the Spring Fling Diva Dash in Rochester, the Diva
Dash in the Twin Cities metro and the all-new Northland Teal Run in Brainerd.
Northern Lights League
For the women of the Northern Lights League, a close-knit
group of women from the northern Twin Cities suburbs,
fundraising and friendship is a way of life. For more
than 25 years, League members have been committed
to raising awareness and funds for women’s health organizations such as MOCA.
Their annual holiday plant sale to benefit MOCA is
an example of their commitment to making a difference for ovarian cancer research and programming.
Since 2004, the Northern Lights League has fundraised
and donated more than $200,000 to MOCA through the
plant sale, which has become an annual event for MOCA members. The group often has a large presence at MOCA’s Annual Meeting
each May and has directed funds towards MOCA-funded research grants, as well.
Supporter Fundraising Events
In total, there were more than 20 supporter fundraising events in 2012. Unique in nature, these
special events showcased our supporters’ connection to MOCA and ovarian cancer. One hip
hop artist released a CD dedicated to his mother, who died from ovarian cancer, and donated
the proceeds to MOCA. Others held silent auctions, concerts - even a pond hockey tournament
was coordinated to support ovarian cancer research and programming! We are grateful for the
help from our supporters in working towards our mission.
All races saw great growth and more fundraisers than ever before, with a total
of $38,000 raised from the three races in 2012 – considerably up just more than
$11,000 in 2011.
