ORGANIZATIONAL MISSION
AND HISTORY
The Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia (MOCA GA)
collects and archives significant, contemporary works by
the artists of the state of Georgia. To place our artists in a
global context, the Museum’s exhibitions include Georgia
artists and artists from around the world. Our programs
promote the visual arts by creating a forum for active
interchange between artists and the community.
MOCA GA was founded in 2000 out of recognition of the relative void across Georgia in
opportunities to learn about and view contemporary art generally, and Georgia
contemporary art specifically. The Museum opened its doors to the public in February
2002. Since that time the Museum has mounted one hundred and twenty one exhibits
of contemporary art and presented artist talks and demonstrations, screenings, panel
discussions, tours of the permanent collection, and off-site field trips. The Museum’s
mission is realized through three major initiatives; an active exhibition schedule, a
growing permanent collection, and a developing Education/Research Center housing
the historical archives.

Georgia Artists Selecting Georgia Artists
June 22-August 24, 2013

Selected by former MOCA GA Working Artist Project winners, Xie
Caomin, Larry Walker and Martha Whittington, the artwork of the 60
Georgia artists in this major exhibition was chosen from 447
submissions from all over the state of Georgia. The intent of this
exhibition is not to do a survey or find a common theme, but to
assemble in one exhibition some of the best work currently being
produced in Georgia.
Jiha Moon: Foreign Love
September 7-November 2, 2013
Working Artist Project 2012/2013

Jiha Moon worked in three areas for this exhibition: works on paper,
ceramic sculptures, and Norigae (traditional Korean clothing
accessories) as art objects. She notes that “throughout the entire
exhibition, my subject deals with my interests of mixing multiple
cultural references (eastern, western and beyond) and playing with
the idea of shifting identities.” The Working Artist Project is funded
by the Charles Loridans Foundation with additional support from the
National Endowment for the Arts.
Artists Photographing Artists
September 7-November 2, 2013

These works from the MOCA GA permanent collection were produced
in 2012 as part of an ongoing project which features portraits of
Georgia visual artists created by Georgia photographers. The
photographers are commissioned to create two prints of each portrait,
one to give to the subject of the portrait and one for the MOCA GA
permanent collection. Beginning in 2006, this ongoing project has
placed 58 portraits by 16 photographers in the MOCA GA permanent
collection. This project was funded by the Massey Charitable Trust.
Alongside their Likeness
September 7-November 2, 2013

This exhibition features photographic portraits of photographers
alongside photographs the artists have created. All works in this
exhibition are from the MOCA GA permanent collection. Portraits
included the artists Chip Simone, Harry Callahan, Lynn MarshallLinnemeier, Oraien Catledge, Mary Carolyn Pindar, Paul Kwilecki,
Lucinda Bunnen, and Karekin Goekjian. The exhibition was curated
by Martha Brewer, the MOCA GA Membership and Special Events
Director.

Katherine Taylor: Spillover November 16-January 18, 2014
Working Artist Project 2012/2013

Katherine Taylor (b. 1965 in Biloxi, Mississippi) studied at the Atlanta
college of Art and Georgia State University. Taylor’s paintings
examine the visual relationships that mediate our experiences of
disaster in the natural world. Taylor stated, “Spillover looks to the
engineered landscape and its impact on disaster in the
environment.” Taylor was selected as a Working Artist Project
winner in 2012.
2011/2012 Working Artist Project Apprentices
November 16, 2013- January 18, 2014

This exhibition featured new works by Hailey Lowe Fennell, Ashley
Schick, Nathan Sharratt, and Jiovnni Tallington who served as studio
apprentices for the Working Artist Project (WAP). WAP is an awards
program to support established visual artists of merit who reside in
the metropolitan Atlanta area. A guest curator from a major museum
is invited to select three visual artists to be supported with an
exhibition, promotion, a studio apprentice, and a major stipend to
create work over the course of the year.
Paintings: New Acquisitions from the Permanent Collection
November 16, 2013- January 18, 2014

This exhibition showcased new paintings recently acquired for the
MOCA GA permanent collection. MOCA GA boasts a permanent
collection of over 900 works of contemporary art by more than 250
Georgia artists, which began with a founding collection
(Pictured at right: Vincencia Blount, Unknown, 1986)
SCORE: Artists in Overtime, Curated by Hope Cohn
February 1- March 29, 2014

SCORE: Artists in Overtime is an exhibition that celebrated our
wonder, passion, and fascination with sports and art. Fresh and
original, SCORE explores the art of the game and the game of art.
SCORE opened on January 31 to coincide with the 2014 Winter
Olympics. The exhibition featured local and national contemporary
artists who take inspiration from sports as their subject, both
literally and poetically.
Shara Hughes: Guess You Had To Be There
April 19-June 28, 2014
Working Artist Project 2012/2013

Guess You Had To Be There, a solo exhibition of new work by Shara
Hughes, debuted paintings created and completed over the last year
of the Working Artist Project. Her paintings combine elements of
landscape, still life, and figuration and, as one critic writes,
“transport the viewer to the realm of dreams and fairy tales through
a lyrical evocation of archetypal images that seem to twist and
transmute before our eyes.” (Harriette Grissom, ArtsATL)

Working Artist Project Exhibition Series
MOCA GA received $100,000 from the Charles Loridans Foundation and an additional $30,000 from the
National Endowment for the Arts to sponsor a sixth year of the MOCA GA Working Artist Project (WAP).
WAP is a program that supports metropolitan Atlanta visual artists, expands the Museum’s mission, and
strengthens the arts and cultural component of Atlanta. Each year, MOCA GA holds a metro-wide juried
competition, featuring a visiting curator from a nationally recognized museum to select three working artists
based on their talent, professionalism, and their proven ability to complete the project. Each artist is
supported with an exhibition, promotion, a studio assistant, and a major stipend in the amount of $15,000
to create work over the course of the year. The Working Artist Project Exhibition, and the accompanying
full-color catalogue, presents the new work by the artists to the community and documents the work created
throughout the project year. Programming for these exhibitions includes an artist talk, as well as behindthe-scenes visits to the artists’ studios. The guest curator in 2013/2014 was Julie Rodrigues Widholm,
Pamela Alper Associate Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (MCA)




Draw@MOCA is series of Saturday afternoon drawing workshops
from 1-3pm, led by artist Angus Galloway. The series features a
different guest artist each month and trains attendees of all ages.
Funds for this program were provided by the Bright Wings
Foundation and Power2Give.

The off-site tours through ArtMerge offer a series of field trips that
promote awareness of the diversity of the visual arts venues found in
Atlanta. MOCA GA schedules artists, curators, or arts administrators to

MOCA GA Internship and Graduate Residency Programs
2014 was a successful year for MOCA GA’s Internship Program, which gives students from Metro-Atlanta and
beyond a hands-on learning experience and educates them on the multi-faceted role of an arts administrator.
MOCA GA accepts an average of sixteen student interns from
Metro-Atlanta high schools, colleges and universities each year.
In addition to assisting the staff in preparing exhibitions and
materials and conducting grant research, the interns sort,
catalog and digitize MOCA GA’s historical archives.
MOCA GA’s Paid Residency Program was successfully piloted in
2014 providing a paid, part-time position for a graduate student
with interest in Arts Administration. This opportunity gives the
student concentrated hands-on learning and practical skills and
they are invited to propose a program for MOCA GA thereby
increasing staff capacity. The first graduate resident created a
Volunteer Docent Training program that is being implemented to
increase the number of exhibition tours given each year.

Off-The-Wall Pin-Up Show + Sale
NOVEMBER 7, 2013
The annual Off-the-Wall Pin-Up show was, as
always a successful event and membership
drive in 2013. Approximately 110 new members
were added to the MOCA GA constituency,
including a number of artists and arts
supporters. The artists the submitted work for
Pin-Up came from 40 cities across the state of
Georgia.
Mambo Nights at MOCA GA
NOVEMBER 23, 2013
In 2013, MOCA GA hosted a Mambo Nights series
at the Museum. This event was hosted for
members and nonmembers as a way to engage
new audiences in the exciting art form of salsa
and mambo. Beginner’s lessons were available
and there was a professional performance by
Stiletto Dance Company. These events served
as a fundraiser for MOCA GA as well as an
entertaining event for patrons.
11th Annual MOCA GALA
APRIL 12, 2014
 The 2014 MOCA GALA Art Auction raised nearly
$200,000 for the Museum, funds which are
unrestricted and help make all museum operations
possible.
 Grace Miguel and Usher Raymond IV were cochairs of the Gala and hosted the VIP Host Committee
Party at their home in Atlanta.
The eleventh annual MOCA GALA Art Auction
presented high-quality works of art by an invitationonly group of Georgia’s finest artists. The event was
catered by one of Atlanta’s top caterers, and James
H. Landon (auctioneer extraordinaire) auctioned art
for a fast-paced and dynamic Live Auction. Silent
Auction items were available for purchase on tablets
and mobile phones.

Approximately 350 students were given
docent-lead tours of the Museum in FY 20132014, ensuring that the youth of the Atlanta
Metro area are educated on the art history of
Georgia and that future generations will be
aware of the contemporary art in the state.
Helen Herring, the first MOCA GA graduate
resident, conducted her final project at the Museum through the creation of a
volunteer docent program that will go into effect in the upcoming months. Her
valuable research will increase staff capacity to give well-informed, guided tours
of the Museum to students and visitors and will also assist with recruiting docents
for the future.
In 2014, the Executive Assistant position was created on the
MOCA GA staff and filled by a past intern, Amy Kicklighter. In
addition to her role as the Executive Assistant to the Director,
Amy has also taken on responsibilities as Membership Associate
in which she is responsible for contacting new members and
maintaining relationships and communications.
The 2013-2014 Fiscal Year marked the success of a capital
campaign that raised funds for the expansion of the MOCA GA
Education/Research Center (E/RC), opened to the public on August 22, 2014.
This full build-out and renovation was designed as a pro bono project by the
architecture firm Mack Scogin Merrill Elam Architects. The Education/Research
Center will increase by an additional 7,000 square feet, bringing the Museum’s
total square footage to 22,000 square feet. The E/RC will be home to an art
library, exhibition space for the permanent collection, and increased storage
space for the collection and the historical archives.
LOOKING AHEAD IN 2014-2015

In FY 2014/2015, Scott Ingram, E.K. Huckaby, and Fahamu
Pecou were selected as the Working Artist Project winners
and will each be featured in an upcoming exhibition. This
year’s guest juror was Franklin Sirmans, Terri and Michael
Smooke Department Head and Curator of Contemporary
Art from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).

MOCA GA will welcome two new board members in the
upcoming fiscal year: William Bolen and Aimee Chubb!

Erin Green will join the staff in FY 14/15 as the new
Development Officer for MOCA GA. She was previously a
graduate resident at MOCA GA and worked to develop a Planned
Giving program to increase the Museum’s contributed income.

The newly expanded Education/Research Center will open on
August 22, 2014 with its first exhibition of the MOCA GA
Permanent Collection

o The inaugural exhibition will showcase many iconic works from the founding
collection, Working Artist Project Selections, and other acquisitions. Each of
these works will also be linked to the historical archives in MOCA GA’s E/RC
by relating each decade represented in the show to happenings and
noteworthy events in the Georgia art world at the time. The MOCA GA
Archives contain over 150,000 items documenting the history of Georgia
contemporary art and will serve as a key resource for this exhibition.
o The E/RC expansion also provides a home for the MOCA GA art library, which
houses over 3,000 books relating to contemporary art history.
