RAMAPO KENNEL CLUB OBEDIENCE CLASSESS –
A CONTINUING SUCCESS STORY!
The 2013-2014 obedience classes have ended
and what a year it was!
On June 24th we held CGC/Therapy Dog
testing, evaluating 10 dogs for CGC and the new
CGCA title and 4 therapy dogs .The following
night we finished our classes for the year the
with KPT, Beginner and Rally Novice graduation.
This ended a year of classes that were full and
rewarding.
In KPT it is so much fun to watch the puppies
grow and learn. We graduated many AKC S.T.A.R.
puppies.
In the beginner classes it is rewarding to
watch owners gain knowledge and develop a
closer relationship with their dogs.
Rally classes have really taken off and we
have expanded to two nights to offer both
Novice Rally and
Advanced/Excellent Rally. It

Obedience and Rally classes and the drop-in
Show Handling classes are well underway at
the VFW hall in Butler. Ramapo brags the
most successful, robust offering of classes of
any kennel club in Northern NJ (and possibly
the entire state). Everyone enjoys themselves
— handlers, dogs and instructors alike. If you
think you might enjoy showing your dog in
conformation, want to teach your dog their
manners or would like to build a solid bond
and working relationship with your dog come
check out our classes. Dates and times are
posted on the RKC website
(ramapokennelclub.com/
RKCClasses.html).
At our last meeting we got some great
suggestions for meeting programs. One of
them was to have the folks from Howling
Woods Farm come speak to us about their
wolf-hybrid rescue program. They do a
fantastic job of educating the public about
wolves and wolf-hybrids and they bring
animals with them that attendees can meet
and pet. Unfortunately, I learned that they
charge a speaking fee so they will not be
paying us a visit. However, they do run tours
of their facility in Jackson, NJ. They will
happily have a guide take you around their
grounds and educate you about both their
resident canids and wolves in general. Cost is
$20/person. Check their website FMI
(howlingwoods.org).
We are always eager to hear about good
program opportunities, so please keep those
suggestions coming!
Hope to see many of you at our meeting on
Wednesday night, October 8th, and at the
shows next weekend!

Dear Valued Members...
As you may know, I recently had an accident that resulted in a
concussion. Once again, I was amazed at the response of this
exceptional club. Cards galore, phone calls and e-mails poured in.
All were greatly helpful in aiding the healing process with which
I'm coping.
There aren't the words to adequately express my gratitude. The
relationships provided by this club are truly meaningful. It's a
comfort to know we can count on each other through whatever life
brings.
A heartfelt thanks to you all. May life's finest gifts be yours
always.
Love and peace,
Rose

NJ FEDERATION OF DOG CLUBS
Guidelines for Responsible Breeders
(Adopted June 2, 1992)
The following “Guidelines for Responsible Breeders” were adopted by the delegates to the New Jersey Federation
of Dog Clubs on June 2, 1992. Applicants who wish to be included in the Pure Breed Resource, Rescue and
Canine Service Directory indicate by signing the application that they are in agreement with the Guidelines and
will abide by them.
1. All dogs shall be kept under sanitary conditions and shall be given maximum
health protection through regular inoculations and proper nutrition. Dogs shall
be restrained within safe restrictions when the breeder/owner cannot personally
supervise their safety.
2. All breeders shall keep accurate and complete personal records of breedings,
litters, pedigrees and puppy owners’ names as required by the American Kennel
Club.
3. All puppies leaving the breeder’s possession shall be a minimum of eight (8)
weeks of age, except in those breeds where a twelve (12) week age is generally
accepted.
4. All breeders of purebred dogs shall breed to conform to the standard for their
breed as set by the parent breed club, and approved by the American Kennel
Club, and only from quality, healthy stock. Breeders will screen for inherited diseases as known in their breed.
5. Breeders shall provide the puppy buyer with written details of feeding, general care, dates and types of inoculations and wormings, grooming instruction,
etc., and be available to offer future advice as needed.
6. Breeders will not sell or consign puppies or adult dogs to pet stores, puppy
brokers or other commercial dealers.
7. All puppies will be sold with written contracts appropriate for show/breeding
quality or pet quality specifications, guarantees and restrictions. The contract
will ensure that the breeder will be contacted whenever an owner can no longer
keep a dog at any time in the dog’s life, and it will be the obligation of the
breeder to assist in the placement or disposition of the dog. Puppy purchasers
should be urged to spay or neuter all pet quality puppies.
8. Dogs and bitches willATTENTION

SPREAD THE WORD: GET OUT AND VOTE
Election Day 2014 — November 4 — is just weeks
away. Are you registered to vote? In many states,
voter registration closes 30 days prior to the
election date, so if you’re not already registered,
time is short!
Voter turn-out for “mid-term” elections (an
election that takes place in the middle of the
President’s term of office) is historically lower than
in Presidential election years. But the importance
and impact of the upcoming election should not be
underestimated. The officials we elect this
November — especially our local and state level
policy makers — will have tremendous influence on
animal laws and regulations that impact our daily
lives.
In addition to the thousands of local officials
who will be elected to city, county and state
offices, all 435 members of the US House of
Representatives, 33 of the 100 US Senators, state
legislators in 46 states, and 36 state governors will
also be elected.
Over the next few weeks, you can help ensure the
future of responsible dog ownership by spreading
the word about the importance of voting for
lawmakers who respect the rights of responsible
dog owners, exhibitors and breeders. Go to AKC
Government Relations on the AKC website to get
ideas for identifying and supporting dog-friendly
candidates and to get a one-page printable flyer
that you can use when encouraging friends, family
and colleagues to vote for dog- and breederfriendly candidates.
This election day your right to

Dog Mickey
Pictured above is Mickey and the Dr Seuss books which RKC
donated to the Kinnelon Library. Mickey happened to be there
when they were having a fairy crafts program so he was given
fairy wings and pronounced "Fairy Guardian." He socialized with
about 20 little fairies and then went on to have nonparticipants read to him in the children's library. He is such a
social guy that he visited all the parents too! I also brought 2
books to the Lincoln Park Library. Both facilities greatly
appreciated the gifts.
