Although Charlottetown is a small city with a population of just under 35,000 people, its status as a capital city gives it a sophistication that will surprise you. Laid out over 240 years ago, the downtown is a significant example of early urban planning. It was that plan, with some minor changes, that gave us our historic 500 town lots, our central square for government, our court, a public market and a square in each of the quadrants. It is that plan, too, that established lots along our waterfront and, to the north, the Common and the Royalties. It is a town plan that shares qualities with Savannah and Niagara on the Lake. This original layout gives us the bones that make us special. open year round In each season our culinary delights, coastal beauty and inspiring history will welcome you. Come spring, summer, winter, or fall, Charlottetown is bustling with activities. Surrounded by history and culture, foods from around the world, and festivals and events to entertain, there is always a reason to put Charlottetown on your destination must-do’s. With four distinct seasons, each one brings its own beauty. The freshness of spring will put a smile on your face, setting your mood for summer. A pride in property can be seen as you stroll the streets of Charlottetown, admiring heritage homes, well manicured lawns and gardens. With fall comes the bountiful harvest and beautiful fall colours. In the winter you’ll feel the magic with the glow of over 175,000 holiday lights and the Christmas tree lined streets. Whenever you choose to visit Charlottetown, there is no shortage of arts & entertainment. Be swept away by live theatre, poetry readings, festivals, events, art exhibits or a traditional ceilidh. Summer 20°C (70°F) to mid 30°C (90°F) Spring /Autumn 8°C to 22°C (46°F to 72°F) Winter 3°C to - 22°C (25°F to 11°F) Since we have had such a long time to shape ourselves, you will see many unexpected urban vistas and architectural treasures as you walk along. Wonderfully mixed styles of architecture dot the streets and, over time, many neighbourhoods with distinct character have developed. A very safe and pedestrian friendly city, you can spend hours meandering through the pleasant streets, inspired by the character of our built heritage. 4 tourismcharlottetown.ca . 2012 Official Charlottetown Activity Guide getting here and around from your home to ours getting to charlottetown is part of the experience. Confederation Bridge ferry tales & deep history On the surface, the PEI Ferry is a means to travel between Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. In reality, it’s much more than that. It’s part of the island experience …part of our history. The ferry service between Wood Islands, Prince Edward Island and Caribou, Nova Scotia dates back over 70 years, to 1941. From providing transportation to soldiers coming home from the Second World War, to modern day wedding proposals, the ferry has served as the base for some of our most treasured memories. The original ferry, named the M.V. Prince Nova set sail for the first time on June 28, 1941 from Caribou, Nova Scotia, under the command of Captain John Dicks. At that time, the ferry could hold only up to 14 automobiles and the rate was a mere $3.00 for a return trip. Evolving into a grander affair today, the M.V. Confederation and the M.V. Holiday Island sail across the Northumberland Straight from May to December. The 75 minute journey offers a moment to soak in the warm sun, the fresh salt breeze and the opportunity to experience one of our favorite Island traditions. tourismcharlottetown.ca . 888.437.6565 www.confederationbridge.com A 12.9 km (9 mile) bridge, connecting from Cape Jourimain, New Brunswick, to the town of Borden-Carleton, Prince Edward Island. Walk down any street, peek around a few corners, and you will most likely catch a glimpse of the sun sparkling on water. Make your way to Charlottetown’s historic waterfront and you can do whatever you please. Dine on seafood, shop for souvenirs, eat homemade ice cream or take a harbour cruise. From one season to another you can watch buskers perform, listen to local musicians, take a solitary walk, or picnic on a park bench. There’s always plenty to see and do, yet no one ever seems to be in a hurry. The luxury of time is an Island quality, and nowhere reflects it better than the dynamic, yet relaxing waterfront area. 12 tourismcharlottetown.ca . 2012 Official Charlottetown Activity Guide hillsborough heritage river In 1997, the Hillsborough River was designated a Canadian Great River. It’s a route that goes more than 27 kms from Charlottetown into the heart of the province. The river’s total meander length is approximately 45 km with 12 km being an estuary. Before being named The Hillsborough River it was referred to as many things. Aboriginal Mi’Kmaq first called it Elsetkook “running close by high rocks”. The French and Acadians called it “Riviere du Nord’Est” and “La Grande Riviere”. It was finally the early Colonial British that named it Hillsborough, for the Earl of Hillsborough. The Hillsborough drainage basin, with its mix of salt, brine and freshwater marsh provides a variety of habitat for wildlife. Enjoy bird watching? Waterfowl, including Great Blue Herons, Bald Eagles and Kingfishers abound among the wetlands. The river is also home to muskrat, fox and over 57 rare plants. Today the Hillsborough River plays host to an increasung amount of recreational activities, as well as quahog and oyster fisheries. Victoria Park victoria park peake’s wharf historic waterfront merchants Representing the heart of the waterfront area, Peake’s Wharf and the adjacent area underwent a restoration that signaled the beginning of Charlottetown’s coastal face-lift. In what was once an area of decay and neglect, shops sprang up, restaurants with waterside views appeared, a public park evolved, and a coastal boardwalk was built. In summer, you can easily spend the better part of a day here. Even in winter when things quiet down, the beauty of the area prevails, enticing you to enjoy the magical blending of sea and snow as you explore the waterfront. Victoria Park is located in downtown Charlottetown at the mouth of the Charlottetown Harbour. The 40 acre historic property was vested to the City of Charlottetown by Queen Victoria in1873. Victoria Park borders on residential areas, the mouth of the harbour, and is located adjacent to the Lieutenant Governor’s property. The Park is a five minute walk from downtown Charlottetown and it functions as a place for active and passive recreation, and simply enjoying the water views. The park includes many active recreational facilities including eight lit tennis courts and a clubhouse, spectacular lit baseball fields nestled amongst a backdrop of mature trees, a skateboard park, and an accessible playground. There is an outdoor swimming pool, recently renovated and now heated by solar energy, a pool change room and a very popular splash park. waterfront boardwalks Much of the city’s waterfront is now linked by a series of boardwalks, offering excellent walking year round. This is one of the best ways to explore, with the close proximity of the city on one side of you, and the water on the other. In the distance, scenic vistas of farm fields and countryside entice you to explore further afield. Like Charlottetown itself, a journey along the boardwalks brings together the urban and rural, the land and the sea, the influences of man, and the implacability of nature. Like a true Island city, Charlottetown seems to perch gracefully along the harbour shore, as though asking for permission to be there. tourismcharlottetown.ca . Victoria Park also boasts a 27 acre wooded area with mature trees, quiet places, and serene walking trails. The front field serves as a gathering place for all kinds of informal play such as frisbee, dog training, picnicking and many special events. The Kiwanis Dairy Bar, a local favourite, looks out on the harbour and is a popular destination for people that walk, bike or drive through the park. 2012 Official Charlottetown Activity Guide 13 culinary expert ise The Olde Dublin Pub charlottetown’s restaurants feature everything from local specialties to international cuisine. It is filled with tradition, innovation and a love for the excitement, challenges, exchanging of ideas, and ties between friends and family. Starting as a two-day event in October of 1888 with agricultural livestock shows, handicraft displays and the finest fruits and vegetables the Island soil had to offer, the Exhibition as it was known, was a testament to the work ethic and skills of the farming community of Prince Edward Island. After having been opened to all Maritime Provinces in 1896, participation in the Exhibition quickly grew, and in 1914 there were more than 3600 entries. This year also marked the introduction of the midway, “a circus of sorts” with rides such as the Merry-GoRound. After the First World War, the Borden Ferry opened which brought many more visitors to the Island for the Provincial Exhibition. Soon after, the events were rescheduled to mid-August to accommodate the increase in visitors. The term Old Home Week was coined during the first years of World War II. Organizers knew a week of Vaudeville, harness racing and celebration would lighten the mood of many. That year’s slogan was “Be It Ever So Humble, There’s No Place Like Home”. The celebratory traditions of Old Home Week continue throughout the years, with each year bringing more activities, an increasing number of livestock exhibitors and more people wanting to be part of the experience. With more than 90,000 visitors in recent years, it has become one of the most cherished Island celebrations. August 9-18, 2012 mark the 125th Anniversary of Old Home Week. tourismcharlottetown.ca . 2012 Official Charlottetown Activity Guide Photos: Nina Linton 21 things to see & do Beaconsfield Historic House charlottetown is a thriving hub of all things cultural, coastal and culinary. Four years later, the Gahan specialty ales have become part of something even bigger, the Prince Edward Island Brewing Company. They currently have a diverse selection of product, including 2011 Canadian Brewing Awards gold medal winner Sir John A’s Honey Wheat Ale, a light golden brew with honey tones; Island Red, a medium-bodied amber ale with caramel overtones; Iron Horse Brown, a full-bodied ale with a roasted malt flavour and chocolate finish; and 1772 IPA, a copper ale high in alcohol with a very bitter finish. Seasonal brews, such as Pumpkin Ale, Special Bitter, or Lager are often available on tap at the historic Gahan House Brewery on Sydney Street. What once was Queen's Square, the site of the old Charlottetown marketplace, is now the Confederation Centre of the Arts. One of Canada's premier live theatre houses, the Centre features professional musical theatre, free outdoor performances, gallery exhibitions, dining and shopping. It is Canada's only national memorial to the Fathers of Confederation; who met for the Charlottetown Conference in September 1864. The Confederation Centre celebrates the dream of confederation, shared by all Canadians – to create a place where our country’s history and multicultural character is celebrated and where the talents of its people are nurtured and showcased. Each summer the Centre hosts The Charlottetown Festival, a musical theatre festival which attracts Canada’s top performers from cross sections of the nation’s culture. Beaconsfield Revealed The Chef's Table When James Peake built Beaconsfield in 1877, it was considered one of the most elegant and expensive houses on the Island and even today it’s still one of our grandest homes. Unfortunately, Peake was destined to enjoy Beaconsfield for a very short time - a time filled with triumphs and tragedies. Chef Kurtis Ellis loves to cook...and he loves sharing his culinary secrets with other people who love to cook. That's why he's opened up his beautiful kitchen at Simple Pleasures Intimate Catering to show you some of the techniques he uses to wow his private dinner guests. You’ll find his story absolutely fascinating as told by his illustrious father-in-law Thomas Heath Haviland. He’ll pick you up at Founders’ Hall in a horse-drawn carriage and on the way to Beaconsfield regale you with great stories of the shipbuilding era of the 1800s. When you reach Beaconsfield you’ll learn the tragic tale of the rise and fall of James Peake as you tour the wonderful home he built for his wife and family. Following the tour, you will join T H Haviland in the Carriage House for some lemonade and ginger cookies and there you’ll learn a few Victorian dance steps and get to participate in the kind of dance that was popular in the day. On the carriage ride back to Founders' Hall, Thomas will take you by Fanningbank where he lived while he was the Lieutenant Governor. As a Father of Confederation, he was instrumental in convincing Islanders to eventually join Canada and he'll show you Province House where the Confederation Conference took place in 1864. When the carriage ride ends, he'll bid you farewell with one final tale of life in Charlottetown over 200 years ago. Available: Wednesday Afternoons during July and August 30 Using some of the Island's finest ingredients, you'll start off preparing a tapas menu of steamed Island blue mussels, quahogs (cherry stone clams) and fresh tomato bruschetta on a baguette. Kurtis will teach you his easy way of opening a quahog, considered a delicacy by many Islanders. For the main course, you're in for a real treat - Island raised beef tenderloin. There's a real art in cooking beef to the perfect point but like everything else Chef Kurtis does, it's actually quite simple. Then you'll create your own salad dressing to adorn a side dish of Island greens. End the evening with the creation of a traditional Island biscuit covered in local fruit and whipped cream. Available: Daily by appointment. Field to Fork Cooking the Island Way Prince Edward Island has been called the "million acre farm" so it's not unusual for our food to come from only a few kilometres from our homes. It doesn't get much fresher than that and Chef John Pritchard delights in creating amazing dishes featuring Island products. If you're here on a Wednesday or Saturday, John will meet you at the Charlottetown Farmers' Market and he'll introduce you to the producers he gets his ingredients from. We can't tell you what you'll be preparing later because that will be decided by what's available at the Market. Then it's off to John's favourite butcher/seafood shop to pick out what will be paired with the fresh veggies and herbs. (Don't worry if you're not here on Market days. John has his own kitchen garden and has farmers bring produce right to his door. You're still in for an amazing culinary experience!). In John's state of the art kitchen, you'll take part in the prep work determining the final menu, working on the appetizers and desserts while learning all about proper knife work, portioning and alternate cooking methods. John will also share his secrets for how to plate the perfect meal so it looks just as good as it tastes. Available: Daily by appointment. 2:00 pm-8:00 pm. Arbor Day was founded in Nebraska in 1872, and a dozen years later, Charlottetown began to celebrate this important trend in urban beautification. On our first Arbor Day, over 300 trees were planted in our city squares, with many prominent citizens taking up the cause and lining their streets with trees. We still enjoy the fruits of their labors, and we continue to embrace the tradition. We are proud of the life these trees bring to our streetscape, and we are sure you will appreciate the ambience they have helped create in this special little capital. Thanks to the efforts of our residents that make our city clean and welcoming, Charlottetown consistently receives acclaim for its beautification initiatives. When you are in downtown Charlottetown, you are never more than two blocks away from any one of the four city squares: Rochford, King, Connaught or Hillsborough. A visit to any one of them provides a peaceful haven, a storybook view, and plenty of space for children to vent their energies. Although there have been times when their future has been threatened, they have become more appreciated as the time passes, recognized for the vital role they play in our downtown core. The city squares have rich histories, each developing a personality and charm from its surrounding streetscape. The City of Charlottetown has been recognized in the National Communities in Bloom competition many times and last year won the International Large Population Category, beating competitors from across the globe. tourismcharlottetown.ca . 2012 Official Charlottetown Activity Guide 35 The City of Charlottetown is a flourishing community of over 32,000 people located on the south shore of Prince Edward Island.
