June 26–29, 2014 Vatra Romaneasca A Tribute to Archbishop Valerian ...in honor of his 100th birthday June 26–29, 2014 Vatra Romaneasca June 2014 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The Planning Committee welcomes you and your family to this year’s Family Life/All-Auxiliaries Conference. Last year, we began this new way of gathering as a Church family. The opportunity to gather in such a fashion was welcomed by many. We hope it will continue to be so. A special feature of this year’s conference is the Tribute Night to our long-time leader, Archbishop Valerian of blessed memory, commemorating the 100th anniversary of his birth. Overall, we have prepared a program for the weekend that includes activities for the entire family. In addition to the meetings of the various Episcopate auxiliaries—ARFORA, Brotherhood, and our youth (AROY), there are workshops on a variety of themes and for all stages in life, tours of the Vatra and Heritage Center, as well as a rich array of worship services, community building events, and opportunities to socialize and enjoy the company of our family and friends. Relax with old friends at our opening picnic on Thursday, participate in a reprise of our spirited “Bible Challenge” competition (or cheer on those who do so) and reminisce at the Tribute Night to Archbishop Valerian on Friday, take your family photo at the Big House or by the Troitza and then dance the night away to Romanian and American music on Saturday Night and worship with us at the Divine Liturgy on Sunday. We encourage you to participate in as many of the activities that are of interest to you. This booklet includes all the program information. In addition, we have collected a number of archival photos of the life of the episcopate under the tutelage of Archbishop Valerian and have included them in this booklet. We want to thank especially those who sponsored our photo retrospective. Looking back over the years not only reminds us of where we have been, but informs who we are today. We would like to thank Archbishop Nathaniel, Bishop Irineu, and the entire Chancery staff for their support for this gathering, those who have spent countless hours preparing for the conference and the many volunteers who have come to assist with the event. All of us welcome all of you to Draw Near, With Faith and Love as we gather as a Church Family at the Vatra again this year. In Christ, Members of the Planning Committee With Many more Faithful Volunteers With Faith and Love, Draw Near / P3 2nd annual Family Life Conference 2014 / P4 With Faith and Love, Draw Near / P5 2nd annual Family Life Conference 2014 / P6 With Faith and Love, Draw Near / P7 A R O Y The American Romanian Orthodox Youth “Dedicated to Orthodoxy, through Faith, Knowledge, and Good Works.” June 26th-29th, 2014 Your Eminence, Your Grace, Reverend Clergy, Dear Members of A.R.O.Y. We are delighted as members of the National A.R.O.Y. Board to welcome you to the 2014 Family Life Conference! This conference is a wonderful opportunity for the youth of our episcopate to come together not only with each other but with our entire families. We pray each one of you will walk away from this conference with more knowledge and information about the church, closer to your faith, and more eager to serve your church and your community. It is the goal of the National A.R.O.Y. Board for us to all walk away from this conference rejuvenated as individuals, as chapters, and as a national organization. This conference is our opportunity as the youth of this episcopate to shape the A.R.O.Y. organization to fit our needs. So we encourage each one of you to speak up, share ideas, ask questions! The A.R.O.Y. organization is so important in shaping the future of our church. We as National A.R.O.Y. Board members thank you for being apart of your local chapter. Our role is to serve the local chapters and be a resource for you. Please let us know what we can do to help you and your local chapter. This conference is a fresh start for us as the national board to hear of your concerns, your achievements, and your needs as local chapters; and work together to help each other. We can’t forget that one of the main reasons to come together is for fellowship. We hope this time will be used to make friends and create new memories. Take advantage of the sports activities and other events that are planned for all of us to enjoy. Having this conference at the Vatra will reminiscent of the summer camps and this conference will be another reason for many of us to come back to our “home away from home”. The theme of this conference “With faith and love, draw near” is a wonderful theme to guide our time together. Each individual, chapter, and family attending this conference has a love for A.R.O.Y. and the church. We all come with the desire to revitalize A.R.O.Y. at the national level and strengthen A.R.O.Y. at the local level. Let us work together with our faith at the center of our discussions and actions; fully participating in all that the weekend as to offer, first in foremost being the liturgical services. We thank His Eminence, His Grace, and all of the Chancery staff for welcoming everyone “home” to the Vatra grounds for this joint conference. We look forward to continuing this new tradition. May God watch over and bless A.R.O.Y. in the years to come! In Christ, The National A.R.O.Y. Congress Vatra Romaneasca, Grass Lake, MI June 26-29, 2014 Your Eminence, Your Grace, Delegates and Members of A.R.F.O.R.A, Welcome to the 66th A.R.F.O.R.A. Congress! This is the second year all the Auxiliaries are meeting in conjunction with the Family Life Conference. This year the Conference will feature a special tribute to Archbishop Valerian of Blessed Memory, commemorating the 100th Anniversary of his birth. In addition to the annual meetings of the Episcopate Auxiliaries, the Conference will focus on activities for the entire family. The program includes workshops on a variety of family oriented themes, worship services, and opportunities to socialize with family and friends. The role of A.R.F.O.R.A. has been a vital part in the life of the Episcopate and the local Parishes. It is we women who are called upon to share our time, talents and dedication towards the growth of our Church and Episcopate. By working together we can expand our Orthodox Faith into the communities, help the less fortunate, assist in religious education, provide opportunities for Retreats, and generate resources for the maintenance and growth of our Episcopate. Our ongoing main project is organizing new Auxiliaries. We have mailed Mission Packets to all our new Missions and Parishes that are not active in ARFORA, to familiarize them with our organization. The Packets include our Constitution & By-Laws, and informative brochures, both secular and religious, that are of benefit to the women of our Dioceses. The aim of A.R.F.O.R.A. is to bring the women together to fully participate in the life of the Church, and to speak out as the voice of the women in the Episcopate. Our special thanks are offered to His Eminence, Archbishop Nathaniel and to His Grace, Bishop Irineu, our Spiritual Advisor, for their encouragement and guidance. May God Bless and Guide A.R.F.O.R.A. through Faith, Hope, and Love. In Orthodoxy, Adela M. Price National A.R.F.O.R.A. President 2nd annual Family Life Conference 2014 / P10 1938-2013 We honor the truly dedicated past leaders of ARFORA who have laid the ground work of ARFORA and whose ideals we all share. Bishop Irineu 2011-2015 With Faith and Love, Draw Near / P11 ORTHODOX BROTHERHOOD USA June 2014 Dear Brothers and Sisters In Christ: Welcome to the 2nd annual Family Life Conference and all auxiliaries meeting. This is a very special year for our Episcopate, for in this year we celebrate the 100th birthday anniversary of Bishop Valerian Trifa. We dedicate the 2014 Family life Conference to the memory of Bishop Valerian. The story of the Vatra is the story of Archbishop Valerian. It is fair to say that the heart and soul of the Vatra is the heart and soul of Bishop Valerian. It has been pointed out that as we look around the Vatra at the many historical buildings, we must always remember that it was Bishop Policarp who gave us those buildings. There is truth in that statement. Bishop Policarp gave us the buildings. But we must also remember, that it is not the buildings that makes the faith holy, it is the faith that makes the buildings holy. And while it may have been Bishop Policarp who gave us the buildings, it was Bishop Valerian who gave us the faith When Bishop Valerian came, the Vatra was but a newly planted seed. When he left, it was like an oak tree - firmly planted and rooted, immovable, and beckoning to all to come and take comfort under its protecting arms. He made the Vatra a safe-haven for freedom-loving Romanians and, at great risk to himself, he was not afraid to use his position to be an outspoken opponent of the communist tyranny that had engulfed the people of Romania. Archbishop Valerian was a primary architect of the Orthodox Church in America. His vision, along with other American Orthodox church leaders, was to have a church free from foreign influence and foreign control. From that vision came the Orthodox Church in America. In a way, it can be said that his was a “Moses” generation, comprised of leaders who were not afraid to stand and say to the Mother Churches of Europe, let my people go! What better example do we have of the wisdom of that vision in the recent invasion by Russia of the Ukraine. Following the invasion, the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church published a letter to the people of the Ukraine. The letter began with the word SURRENDER, urging the people to give up the fight, for, after all, wrote the Patriarch, we are all the same Orthodox Christians and we are one people. We are fortunate to have had leaders like Archbishop Valerian who had the vision to recognize how corrupting foreign influence and foreign control over the American Orthodox Church could become. It has been said that each life is but a moment, but for great men, there is an eternity in it. His accomplishments have lasted longer than his critics. May those accomplishments continue and may his memory be eternal! Ian & Mary Lynn Pac-Urar 2nd annual Family Life Conference 2014 / P54 THE MISSION OF THE ROMANIAN ORTHODOX EPISCOPATE OF AMERICA IS NOT ONLY THE PRESERVATION OF ITS LITURGICAL AND ROMANIAN HERITAGE, BUT ALSO TO CONTINUOUSLY EDUCATE ITS MEMBERS IN RELIGION, COMBINED WITH THE PROPAGATION OF ORTHODOXY ON THE AMERICAN CONTINENT. TO ASSURE ITS EXISTENCE, THE EPISCOPATE MUST LOOK ONLY FORWARD AND NOT BACKWARD. FOR THIS REASON, IT BECAME AFFILIATED WITH THE AUTOCEPHALOUS ORTHODOX CHURCH IN AMERICA (OCA), WITH OTHER ORTHODOX GROUPS. SINCE THE PURPOSE OF THIS AFFILIATION WAS FUNDAMENTAL FOR THE VERY EXISTENCE OF THE EPISCOPATE, IT IS, THEREFORE, IRREVERSIBLE. Trifa’s Writings, Edited by Traian Lascu, RAHC, Jackson, MI 1995, Installation Speech July 4, 1952, pp.24-30) Beloved Faithful, You are all aware of the point we have reached in the history of the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of America: we find ourselves at the crossroads from which some paths lead to life and salvation, others to destruction and death. To the credit of your leaders and your people of good faith in choosing the paths to the future, your choice was the good way…God has made me worthy to respond to your appeal and to say, “Here I am”, ready to dedicate my life and labor to Jesus Christ, Our Saviour, to His Holy Church, and to you, its faithful… In doing this, I realize that I have not chosen the wide, well-paved Turnpike of worldly satisfaction…but have take the narrow path of countless obstacles and difficulties. Why Have I Accepted Your Appeal? I have accepted your appeal because I was convinced that: 1) the treasure of Romanian Orthodoxy brought here by your parents,,…must not perish; 2) the sacrifices made by thousands of Romanian Americans in building altars, organizing parishes, and uniting into one Episcopate, should not be in vain; 3) times today demand, more than ever before, people to work for the religious ideals without which mankind would have no reason to exist. The Program of Activity The program…can be condensed into the following words: a Bishop must be the keeper of the true faith and must devote himself to the salvation of the souls in his care… (He) must be aware of the lives of the members of his flock, of their customs and the ways of the world in which they live. The Pastorate in the New World Here in America…a pastorate in the new world requires new tools…Here, there is no longer the State with its laws and its budget to give authority and financial means to the Bishop. In America, the authority comes from activity and the funds from the voluntary contributions of the faithful. Pastor and Parishioners The well being of any Church organization depends on two factors: the Pastor and the parishioners. No matter how hard I were to work…I can accomplish nothing if you, the priests and the parishioners, are not with me, body and soul, for the cause of the Church. If, for you, the Episcopate is a simple organizational being and if you think of it only at annual meetings, or when you read about it in the newspaper, do not be surprised if I shall be unable to come each year to report accomplishments and success. Being few in number, with meager resources, our strength must lie in the purity of our faith and in goodwill among us. We have nothing to share but labor. To gain, we all have the redemption of our souls… We All Together are the Episcopate The Episcopate is not formed of the Bishop alone, nor only of parishioners. All of us together make up the Episcopate; I have been called to serve you. Above every one of us must be the Holy Tradition of the Church, for which I have taken upon myself the obligation to respect and to make it to be respected. The Bishop and the Faithful The everyday life and the relationship between the Bishop and the faithful, or between the Episcopate and the parishes, are to be regulated by the new Episcopate Statutes… Continued on page 66 With Faith and Love, Draw Near / P65 Love The fervent of all our labor must be the evangelical love of which the Apostle Paul states: “Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.”(1Cor. 13:4-8). In our work, we all have need of this love. All that we build based upon love will never disappear. Problems to Be Resolved The problems to be resolved are many. The Romanian Orthodox parishes in America are caught in the vortex of the great conflict… It is our duty not to allow the organizations and the souls of our faithful to fall into the hands of those without God. It is the duty of each one of us to take part in keeping the Romanian Orthodox Church of America out of party conflicts. The Church is and must continue to be above any partisan politics. Soldiers of Christ and American Citizens We are soldiers of Christ and citizens of America. That is why enemies of our faith, whoever they may be and enemies of our country can have no room among us…we can never allow our religious organizations to become nests of anti-Christian, anti-American and anti-democratic infiltration. The Future Belongs to the Youth Without the youth, there is no future and, without a serious organization, there is no youth….I consider it my first duty and yours, as well, to gather our youth about our altars, a task necessary for the future of the Church as well as for the spiritual salvation and perfection of the youth….The heart of the Episcopate will be open wide for their activities; we shall make special efforts so that they can become ready to continue, honorably, what you, their elders, have initiated with sacrifices and enthusiasm. The Suffering of the Romanian People We shall need to keep our eyes open and our hearts warm for the suffering of the Romanian people…America is the land of promise and the Romanian Americans are the brethren who can understand them and help them. Inter-Orthodox Relations & the Establishment of a Patriarchate in America Relations with sister Orthodox Churches in American were established…we shall strive to maintain them, so as to assure the canonical unity of Orthodoxy in the new world….we are convinced that we are proceeding with ever more certain steps towards the unity of the American Orthodox. To this is added also the fact that, with our without our approval, the young generation considers itself to be American. Our ethnic churches must keep this in mind… The establishment of an Orthodox Patriarchate of America is indicated to be the solution to the many crises and controversies to which we are witness today within American Orthodoxy. Seeing and Doing I believe that we shall have nothing so difficult that it cannot be discussed among us and be resolved in time…do not expect miracles in short order. Without a doubt, a new phase in the history of Romanian Orthodoxy in America is beginning. God grant that it be to the credit of those of us who will be working for the cause of the Church and in appreciation of those who heretofore, have made many sacrifices in order to establish their ancestral altars in the land of their descendents. 2nd annual Family Life Conference 2014 / P66 Conference Planning and Event Committees !"#$%!&'(&)*!&+,./01/!234/$%/56/ Auxiliary Representatives: • ARFORA – Adela Price (President), Mary Sankey, Lucy Pop, Adelina Balog • Brotherhood – Jim Carabina (President), Marie Avramaut, Ron Muresan • AROY – Jessica Precop (Interim President), Bethany Avramaut, Steve Maxim • Teva Regule, Committee Chair Event Committees: Program and Scheduling Treasurer Event Coordinators Thursday Picnic Friday ARFORA Luncheon Friday Tribute Night Saturday AROY/Brotherhood Luncheon Saturday Evening Dance Sunday Banquet Program Hospitality Meals Refreshments ARFORA Coffee Shop Publicity, Registration and Tickets Conference Program Souvenir Booklet Workshops/Educational Initiatives Book Table Child Care and Youth Activities Tours (Heritage Center and Vatra) Photographer Historical Displays Liaison with Vatra Staff Housing Coordinator Vatra Service Project Maintenance and Venue Arrangements Gate Keeping and Parking Teva Regule Marie Avramaut Orthodox Brotherhood USA Holy Nativity Ladies Auxiliary-Chicago Jim Carabina, Mark Kalugar, Ron Muresan, John Regule, Fr.
