Meriden Public Library News Meriden Library Friends Win State Award For 30 years the Friends of the Meriden Library have given to others with profits from their used book store. But in June they were on the other side when the statewide group Friends of Connecticut Libraries gave them an award. “Meriden is so fortunate to have such a generous and hard-working group of people dedicated to making the library better for our community,” said Karen Roesler, Meriden Library director. The Meriden Friends received the group award for municipalities over 25,000, one of a handful of awards presented. The Friends came to the rescue last year when the library was involved in a remodeling, which involved installing new carpeting, lights and a video display. “We were improving our circulation desk and entrance and it just made the reference desk look terrible,” Roesler said at the awards ceremony June 11 during the annual meeting of the Friends of Connecticut Libraries, held at Middlesex Community College in Middletown. “I just mentioned it [the reference desk] and they came forward with a check to pay for it.” That check – $27,800 – allowed the library to order a custom-made reference desk about 18 feet long and 3 feet wide. The desk has room for two computer stations for librarians along with lots of storage for daily newspapers and supplies. The Friends operate their book store at the side of the library building for 33 hours a week. Occasionally they will hold special sales, such as near holidays. They typically fund children’s programming such as the July 11 scheduled visit by animals from the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center and the Aug. 5 show by Sparky’s Puppets. The Friends also buy passes for about 20 museums including the Mark Twain House in Hartford, the Beardsley Zoo in Bridgeport and the KidCity Children’s Museum in Middletown. Last year the Friends rented a bus to take library supporters to the State Capitol to a rally in support of state funding for libraries. One of Meriden’s state legislators met with local supporters and spoke at the rally. Although it is important to acknowledge the financial support that the Friends provide to the library, the wonderful collaboration that exists between them and the library board demonstrates the best of what a friends group does for the community, said the statewide Friends. Having been a previous customer of the Bookstore, she wanted to be with books and people who like books, plus “I got to see all the new books that had just been published.” Another bonus today is that she occasionally gets to see one of her former English students from her days at Platt High School. She is devoted to the Friends’ mission to support the Library financially as well as to provide good books at very reasonable prices so that anyone can afford them. She expresses pride in being a part of a small volunteer group that manages one of the largest Friends organizations in the state. Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Team Wins Award The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Team, that is located at the Meriden Public Library, won the United Way “Exceptional Program of the Year” award for 2016. The VITA team prepared tax returns for over 1,100 people in our community and returned over $1.5 million dollars for them. The VITA team consists of volunteer tax preparers who commit many hours weekly from January through April each year. The award was presented in May by James Ieronimo, Executive Director of the United Way of Meriden and Wallingford. The Meriden Public Library (MPL) site has been the largest VITA site in the Meriden region for over 30 years. The library began its partnership with Human Resources Agency (HRA) of New Britain during the 2013 Tax Season through a collaboration between the Library, the United Way of Meriden and Wallingford and the Internal Revenue Service. The Library has 16 very dedicated veteran VITA Volunteers, most of whom have volunteered for close to or over ten years! The MPL is a 100% volunteer run site led by Kenneth Beaudry with support from local partners and HRA.
