BEAUTY SUMMERREHAB If you played your cards right, these past few months have been filled with dips in the pool, afternoon drives in a convertible, and long, lazy hours under the sun (slathered in SPF … right?). No doubt your spirit appreciated the elements—but your hair? Not so much. Let’s bring those strands back to health after a season of soul-affirming, hair-damaging decadence InStyle / AUGUST 2014 157 BEAUTY YOU WANT Strong, Healthy Hair Fried, Broken Ends YOU HAVE Like a summer cold, split ends in August just seem so wrong. What gives? Moistureevaporating rays lead to major dryness, and while that damage starts at the tips, it can slowly creep its way up. Don’t throw in the towel—it’s time to fight for those long waves! YOUR 3-STEP REHAB PLAN 1 GET A (TEENY) TRIM We know how much fun it is to play with different styles during the summer (the beach waves! the crown braids!), but “scissors are a friend to beat-up hair,” says San Diego stylist Jet Rhys. Every four weeks, get the ends “dusted” (that’s hairstylist speak for “cut only this much”) so split ends can’t move up the shafts and compromise even more of your length. 2 SHAMPOO BACKWARD “Hair is like a rubber band,” says N.Y.C. stylist Nunzio Saviano. “It will snap if it’s overextended.” A pre-shampoo layer of conditioner with vegetable oil and elastin (Philip Kingsley Elasticizer has both) can protect strands while helping to restore their bounce. Leave on for a few minutes, then rinse and follow with a gentle, detergent-free wash, such as Purely Perfect Cleansing Creme, which lifts dirt without leaving hair parched and weak. Purely Perfect Cleansing Creme, $40; hairstory.com. 3 YOUR INSPIRATION If you refuse to drop your hot tools this summer, coat strands with a heat-protecting spray before styling to prevent scorching. GLOSS IT OVER Natural oils like shea, jojoba, and almond, all found in Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla shine spray, work in two ways: They soak into the hair shaft to fortify it against future breakage, and they slick down pesky flyaways. A dose of a biotinrich rebuilder, like Pureology’s split-end treatment, on dry strands can also temporarily seal frayed ends. Blame the heat and humidity, since fuzz happens when cuticles get dried out by rays and swollen by moisture. Download these tips to polish the surface so hair mirrors all that light. YOUR INSPIRATION Though straight hair tends to reflect light better than curls do, these tricks will help up the gloss on ringlets too. YOUR 3-STEP REHAB PLAN 1 SMOOTH THINGS OVER “Your goal is to create a barrier to keep moisture out,” says N.Y.C. hairstylist Nathaniel Hawkins. Start in the shower by using an oil-based shampoo and conditioner duo. And if you’re blow-drying afterward, you must commit to going at it until strands are bone-dry, says Rhys. Otherwise, whatever water you missed “invites wrinkles back into the hair.” L’Oréal Paris Smooth Intense Polishing Conditioner, $5; drugstore.com. 2 STAY PROTECTED Before you even think about stepping outdoors, you need some insurance against rain, sweat, and humidity. We’d put our money on this sure bet: Living Proof’s new leave-in treatment, which contains an exclusive silicone-free molecule that not only creates a waterproof shield but also helps repair weak areas along the hair shaft. Living Proof Restore Instant Repair, $29; ulta.com. 3 HAVE YOUR WAY WITH STRAYS Sure, greasy hair doesn’t frizz, but that doesn’t mean you need to lube up your strands to keep kinks at bay. Just look for a sheer mist with a lightweight blend of botanical oils, like this one from Garnier. Frizzprone hair soaks it up and behaves but still has some body, says Hawkins. Garnier Fructis Marvelous Oil 5-Action Frizz Defy, $6; garnierusa.com. 160 InStyle / AUGUST 2014 ZOË SALDANA 33% JULIANNE MOORE of women would give up social media for a year’s worth of goodhair days. SOURCE: Dove Hair Care study BEAUTY YOU WANT Vibrant Color Faded, Patchy Streaks YOU HAVE Still looking to lemons and sun rays to play up your highlights? Bad. UV light actually breaks down pigment molecules and leads to bleached-out or brassy tones. Another summer bummer: Water (from pools, oceans, and showers) can dull your hue too. Let’s brighten up, shall we? YOUR 3-STEP REHAB PLAN YOUR INSPIRATION You can keep your color just as bright and rich as these lock stars’ by topping dyed strands with a hat when in direct sunlight. 1 SKIMP ON SHOWERS “Every time your strands come in contact with water, your hair cuticles open and color molecules seep out,” says N.Y.C. colorist Kyle White. To help pigments stay put, lather up only once or twice a week, and use a gentle, non-stripping, sulfate-free shampoo, like this one from Nexxus. At the pool protect your color with a swim cap, or a product that acts like one. White likes Phyto’s Phytoplage oil ($28; beauty.com), which saturates and swells the cuticles so less chlorine and water get in, he says. Nexxus Color Assure Vibrancy Retention Shampoo, $10; nexxus.com. 2 KEEP IT COVERED Ultraviolet rays penetrate the hair shaft and break down pigment molecules; Alterna Sunshine Spray has filters to prevent that kind of damage. More to love: It’s so lightweight, you can mist away on dry hair and not look like a drowned rat. Alterna Haircare Bamboo Beach Summer Sunshine Spray, $20; alternahaircare.com. 3 GET RICH QUICK Every couple of weeks, combat fading with high-tech products that offer an instant boost. For blond to light brown hair, use a violet-hued rinse like Shu Uemura Color Lustre Cool Blonde Reviving Balm ($58; shuuemuraartofhair-usa.com) to immediately counter brassy tones. If your hair is red, medium to dark brown, or black, use a tinted gloss like Rita Hazan’s. It deposits a bit of color for a luscious look. Rita Hazan Ultimate Shine Color Brown Gloss, $26; sephora.com. 50 KATE HUDSON hours of sun exposure can damage hair as much as a half hour of bleaching does.
