Christian Brothers of the Midwest
Greetings from the
Provincial
Brother Francis Carr, FSC
Dear Friends,
As you read this, I will be in the last weeks of my third and final term as Visitor
of the Midwest District. They have been ten years of wonderful relationships,
gatherings and events that have energized us, normally busy days, and I hope,
positive advances for the District. I had served for four years at Auxiliary Visitor
in St. Paul and Minneapolis and then six as Auxiliary when the new Midwest
District was created in 1995. So after twenty years it is time to move on. I am
confident that Brothers Larry and Mark will move us in directions that insure
the Lasallian mission in the Midwest and that address Association in new and
exciting ways. For me, I look forward to some “down time,” really unscheduled
time when I can do some things I’ve wanted to do for awhile.
Of all that has happened over the past ten years I am most heartened by what
has been accomplished with our Lasallian Partners. They have been an integral
and valuable part of our District Assembly, the District Congress and the
District Chapter. We have had Partners serving in our District Administration,
as Presidents and in other leadership positions in our ministries and as key, vital
members of our Mission and Ministry Council.
Some of our Partners have been directly involved in the establishment of several
San Miguel schools in the District, and they have supported the development
of these inner-city middle schools that provide a safe, high quality, intensive
Lasallian educational experience. Regrettably, we had to make some painful
decisions when we recognized that the need for raising such a high proportion of
the finances is not sustainable in some areas. But we maintain six schools with
Brothers, Partners and Lasallian Volunteers serving as teachers and administrators.
In many ways as Visitor I have been blessed by some positive events in my life. I
was fortunate to be elected to the General Chapters of 2000 and 2007, and Brother
Álvaro appointed me to the Preparatory Commission of the 44th General Chapter.
I was one of three moderators who alternated running the Chapter meetings each
day. Although that was a lot of work, it was a unique learning experience, and
I can now appreciate how the Lasallian mission is promoted around the world.
I was also on the Executive Committee of the Conference of Major Superiors
of Men and visited numerous Vatican offices in Rome during those three years.
In addition, I was fortunate to be able to work with three outstanding Brothers
who served as Auxiliary Visitors during my tenure: Brothers Michael Flaherty,
Armand Alcazar and Larry Schatz.
During these past years we established the Lasallian Teacher Immersion
Program, developed and maintained by Brother Patrick Conway. It was, in fact,
his creation, and it has given a whole new perspective to Lasallian formation and
the promotion of the mission of John Baptist de La Salle. The college age young
men who participate are preparing to become teachers, and the LTIP allows them
to continue their university education, participate in spiritual growth programs,

study Spanish in Guatemala, and serve in several Lasallian ministries of the District. When they graduate, we
are prepared to offer them a teaching opportunity in one of our schools, and one, Tony Elfering, asked to join the
Brothers and is in our initial formation program
Another major development of the past decade was the establishment of the Mission and Ministry Council
which incorporated some of our Partners into the decision making process of the District. In response to the 43rd
General Chapter and the Midwest District Chapter of 2000, the Mission & Ministry Council was created in 2002.
Its function was to assist and support the Brother Visitor in his duties with respect to the Lasallian Educational
Mission in the existing and future ministries of the District. In the intervening years, this Council has fulfilled
its purpose in the areas of the mission, Lasallian formation, service to the poor, sponsorship and evangelization.
In fact, it has worked so well that we will soon reconstitute it as the Lasallian Mission Council, and it will play
a much more significant role in areas of oversight and stewardship related to the mission in our District. The
District Council of the Christian Brothers will hold some reserved powers.
In view of the aging of our Brothers we created
the position of Director of Senior Brothers,
filled by a Brother whose task it is to visit the
Brothers who are sixty-five and over once each
year, assist them with planning for retirement
or moving to a retirement center or skilled care
facility, providing support for a spirituality of
aging, and serving them in any other ways
necessary. In addition, we hired four District
Nurses to serve the Brothers in the locations
where we have large groups of Brothers –
Memphis, Chicago, Winona and the Twin
Cities. These women take Brothers for doctor’s
appointments, visit with them regularly,
attend to any who are hospitalized, and act as
advocates for the Brothers with various health
care professionals. They also keep in contact
(l-r) Brothers John Blease, Frank Carr, Mark Snodgrass, Larry Schatz and
Tom Johnson. During the Intercapitular Meetings, Midwest Brothers had lunch with the Brothers in distant states.
between sessions at a nearby restaurant called Gustodivino (Divine Taste).
.
During the past decade I was faced with the
deaths of sixty-three Brothers. Many of these men had a major impact on the lives of the Brothers and on the
education of the students in our schools and universities. Their deaths point to the aging of men religious that
is happening in the Church, and we need to continue our prayers that new members will listen to God’s call to
religious life. Perhaps the one deceased Brother with the most significant impact was Brother John Johnston,
former Superior General, a Lasallian scholar, a visionary, and a Brother and friend to all. I valued his insights and
his fraternal support on many occasions.
Clearly, the past ten years in the Midwest District have seen more developments and transitions than what I have
summarized here. But these stand out in my mind as I look back over my years as Visitor. And the conclusion that
I draw is that the mission of St. John Baptist de La Salle is alive and well among us. Our Brothers and Partners,
our administrators and faculty members, our alumni and students, and our many benefactors can see that their
donations of time, treasure and talent invested in our Lasallian mission continue to flourish with the result of
producing well educated students for the future. And for that, we are all grateful.
Live, Jesus in our hearts. Forever!

Lasallian Teacher Immersion Program
Brother Patrick Conway FSC, Director of Formation & Vocation
On Tuesday, April 5, our Superior General, Brother Álvaro, met with eight of the
young men from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota who have participated in the
Lasallian Teacher Immersion Program (LTIP). Brother Alvaro had an opportunity
to hear from each young man on how LTIP has impacted his life and the direction he
wants to take as a future Lasallian educator.
Junior Steve Schmidt wrote a song entitled, “In Their Eyes,” and sang it for Brother
Álvaro. The song speaks to Steve’s experiences with the children at Operation
Breakthrough, a day-care center for 600 children in Kansas City, Missouri. LTIP
participants spend two hours each morning of their first immersion experience at
Breakthrough. The 600 children range in age from 2 weeks to five years old, and the
majority are raised by their mothers. As a result, it is not uncommon for the young
men to be called “daddy” during the course of their first visit. The refrain of Steve’s
song goes to the core of our Lasallian mission.
Each student will need a scholarship in the amount of $2,000 to cover each facet
of the program which is over and above what he pays his respective university.
Your tax deductible donation in this amount, or any portion of this amount, would
be greatly appreciated. An envelope is enclosed in the center of this magazine for
your convenience if you wish to make a donation.
Steve sings the refrain of his song.

“Letters. We get letters...”
Brother Thomas Hetland, FSC, Director of Development
Do you remember the song “Letters. We get letters. We get stacks and stacks of letters….?” (Do you
rmember who sang it?)
We all get stacks of letters and there’s always quite a bit that goes directly into the trash unopened. There’s
just not enough time to pay close attention to everything.
Every now and then, though, a letter comes along that’s a real gem, a treasure. We read it and we re-read
it. We’re glad it’s on paper so it’s easy to keep and to retrieve at will. It’s more permanent than a voice mail
and more personal than an email. It’s a real letter! It’s from a person who has had an enormous influence
on our life.
Russ Hogan enrolled in St. Mel High School in Chicago in 1947, and before he graduated in 1951 he had just
such a letter.
At St. Mel Russ was enrolled in the Classical
Course of studies. He liked the arts. He was
in the Art Club and the Drama Club and during
his junior year at St. Mel he made a decision
about his future – Russ Hogan would be an
English teacher.
He had not expected his career decision to
run into a roadblock, but indeed it did, just
as soon as Russ revealed his plans to his
father. Mr. Hogan did not envision his son
in the classroom. Mr. Hogan saw his son as a
businessman succeeding in some commercial
enterprise. Mr. Hogan was firm about that;
Russ would have to make new plans.
A dejected Russ Hogan returned to St. Mel and
confided his disappointment to Brother Justus
George, his English teacher. Brother George
listened and was equally distressed. He knew
of Russ’ hopes and saw great promise in Russ
as a teacher. Brother George decided that he
would do more than just listen and commiserate;
he would at least try to intervene and contact Mr.
Hogan on Russ’ behalf. Brother George would
write a letter.
And in the letter he told Mr. Hogan that Russ
displayed quite a passion for English and for the
field of education. He painted a portrait of Russ’
future life for Mr. Hogan, a rewarding life of

satisfaction and accomplishment if Russ were allowed to follow his dream. This
lad had talent and energy that could make a real difference in the lives of the
young people who would be with him in the classroom. As a teacher, Russ would
have a valued impact and a fulfilling life. But as a businessman, who knows?
Maybe yes, maybe no.
Mr. Hogan reflected on the letter, shared it with Russ, and never again objected to his son’s chosen path as a
teacher. Brother George had made his point. Russ Hogan was free to pursue his dream.
Russ shared this story with me the first time we met. He had already retired from what was indeed quite a
fulfilling career as a teacher first in Lake Forest, IL, and then in Clayton, MO, outside St. Louis. In addition to
teaching English he was for many years chair of the department. He was the co-author of three textbooks. He
not only taught Advanced Placement English courses; he was for many years on the team of teachers who graded
the AP exams.
Russ always hated to think how his life would have unfolded had it not been for Brother Justus George. When
he first told me this story in 2002, it had been more than 50 years since Brother George wrote his father. Russ
had kept that letter for his entire life and always where he could retrieve it quickly. After he told his story he
got up from his chair, went into his office and returned with the letter, a single typewritten page. With a flair
for the dramatic Russ explained the importance of the letter in this way: “If ever there is a fire or an earthquake
first I retrieve this letter, then I exit the building.”
Sadly, Russ Hogan died in 2004. Had he lived, he would this year be celebrating his 60th anniversary from St.
Mel. Over the years I have heard many stories
from our alumni about the impact that a Brother,
or lay teacher, or coach had on their lives. Russ
Hogan’s story is, happily, a single episode in a
long series of stories involving students and
the teachers who took the time to nurture their
dreams and brighten their futures.
Thanks to your support our 4,000 Brothers and
Lay Partners in the Midwest Province, Lasallians
all, continue to pay personal attention to tens of
thousands of students each year, helping them
to fashion a promising future. Your generous
annual support and/or provision for the Christian
Brothers in your estate planning makes certain
that today’s students – and tomorrow’s – will
continue to enjoy the same opportunities.
Thank you for being our Partner in Mission and
God bless you.
By the way ... it was Perry Como who sang the
song about Letters. If you didn’t know that,
you’re probably just too young to remember! “

“Built On Holy Ground”
James Eichhorst, Director of Development
Through its stately and celebrated 125 year history, La Salle Retreat Center has been
known by various names---Catholic Protectorate, St. Joseph’s Industrial School, La
Salle Institute and simply “Glencoe.” Generations of individuals looking for spiritual
growth have discovered, as do the many groups who visit the campus today, that there is
something sacred on its 180 acres of woods and rolling hills just southwest of St. Louis.
Without question, such a place must be one of peace. Lying firmly in the foothills of the
Ozarks near the limestone bluffs overlooking the Meramec River, La Salle Retreat Center
offers those who attend the numerous retreats throughout the year a safe haven to renew
a relationship with God, strengthen the bonds of friendship and deepen the understanding
of the commitment of marriage.
What makes La Salle truly remarkable is that, even through its ever-changing and adapting
history, a constant remains. Whether you were called to devote your life to the Brothers
of the Christian Schools, or humbly invited to attend a workshop, once you set foot on the
grounds of the campus, you are instantly filled with warmth and serenity.
One of the many statues dedicated to

as they give meaningful testimony after testimony of just how they encounter God here
and how their lives have been changed. The staff welcomes their kind words, and sends them forth with a renewed sense of
spirit, encouraging them to share what they have learned here with friends and family back home.
Perhaps, it has something to do with the location itself. In the past, Glencoe was a place of rest for tribes of Missouri, Osage
and Shawnee Indians who made their way to the nearby limestone and flint quarries. Deer and fish were abundant, making it a
perfect stopover point. Even now, it is not surprising to see wildlife fearlessly traveling through La Salle’s picturesque grottos
and fields. One recent visitor wrote, “I like to see the sunrise when I go on retreat, and this morning was beyond belief! Imagine
the joy of seeing the beauty of a new day created by God…in the company of a doe and two fawns. Only at La Salle!”
Maybe it is the inspiration for this place that sustains its mission. The Lasallian spirit that is evident everywhere you look finds its roots
in all the Christian Brothers who served here, dedicating themselves to Christ as they took care of displaced children during its time as
an orphanage, and as they educated young men who were discerning their vocation when La Salle Institute opened.

The 125th Anniversary of La Salle Retreat Center
Glencoe, Mo
The Brothers lived their lives inspired by St. John Baptist de
La Salle’s conviction that God was present in all things. And,
today, the Brothers who live here instill that same devotion to
the staff and visitors of La Salle Retreat Center. This is just one
of the many reasons hearts are filled with such reverence during
the Quasquicentennial, expressed so perfectly by the Center’s
maxim, “Service Inspired by Faith.”
The 125th Anniversary celebration officially began with the
publishing of a 45-page book, On This Holy Ground: A Brief
Walk through the History of La Salle Retreat Center, that
comprehensively chronicles in words and pictures its distinguished
story and its undeniable significance to those who travel to this
grand campus (for ordering and additional information, please visit St. Joseph Grotto.

With a visit from Brother Álvaro, Superior General of the Christian
Brothers, a special celebration of the liturgy by Archbishop Robert
Carlson, a Founder’s Day recognition and other special events
scheduled through December, the doors of La Salle will again open to
friends, old and new, just as it did back in 1886.
With groups being added every year, including ACTS and parish
enrichment as well as teams of high school students eager to gain
different perspectives away from the classroom, La Salle remains
a vibrant link to the communities it serves.
“This is a special time,” admits Mike Sawicki, President of La

San Miguel Middle School
Minneapolis, Minnesota
“To touch the hearts of your students and to inspire them with the Christian spirit is the
greatest miracle you can perform.”
This familiar statement by St. John Baptist de La Salle captures well the energy and
guiding spirit of Ben Murray, the President of San Miguel Middle School of Minneapolis,
and Principal Sister Mary Willette, SSND.
Ben Murray first encountered the Lasallian charism as a student at Saint Mary’s University.
A mission trip to San Miguel, Back of the Yards, in Chicago opened his eyes to the harsh
realities faced by inner-city youth and how the work of John Baptist de La Salle, more
than 300 years ago in France, might be part of the solution. A graduate of the Lasallian
Leadership Institute, Ben served as a full-time volunteer with the Christian Brothers to
help open San Miguel in 2000. “My time at San Miguel has provided me with both the
most rewarding and most challenging experiences in my life,” said Ben. “Greeting our
students with a handshake each morning places me in the holy presence of God. Their
dreams, their potential and their trust in our school community are truly blessings to me.
I have been fortunate to witness the immense good that can be done when a community
collaborates to support the promise of our youth.” In his role as president, Ben has worked
to connect San Miguel’s supporters and the larger community to San Miguel’s Lasallian mission.
Sister Mary Willette, a School Sister of Notre Dame, heard the call and responded to the
invitation to be the principal of San Miguel in 2002 as she felt a direct connection between
the Lasallian charism and the charism of Blessed Theresa of Jesus, Foundress of her
community. The mission of San Miguel to educate city youth to reach their full potential
is a very concrete way to continue the legacy of Blessed Theresa and John Baptist de
La Salle. Sr. Mary observes: “The early years at San Miguel were very challenging and
stretching for me as I had never been involved in education in an urban setting. It took me a
while to understand the culture and neighborhood. Their story was different from the other
children I had worked with. I learned quickly that I had to evaluate my own assumptions
and clarify best practices in order to help students be successful at San Miguel.” Over the
years, Sr. Mary has worked with her staff to develop a holistic approach to education and
one that accelerates academic growth.
President Ben Murray tutoring a student
Principal Sr. Mary Willette reviewing
material with a student
Ben and Sr. Mary collaborate as San Miguel’s leadership
team, contributing their complementary skills and
experiences. A couple of years ago, the two led the
school’s initial accreditation process, engaging the
school community in the creation of a strategic plan to
help San Miguel fully realize its Lasallian mission.
After eleven years of making a difference in the lives of
many young people, San Miguel will close its doors in
June. Even though the decision to close was a wrenching
one, it involved a process typical of both Ben and Sr.
Mary: gather the necessary information, discern all
possible options, and make the right decision. The many
students who went through San Miguel now have a much
brighter future, thanks to the time they spent under the
skillful and very Lasallian care they received at the hands
of Ben and Sister Mary.

Corey Quinn & Phil Pusateri
De La Salle Middle School at St. Matthew’s
St. Louis, Missouri
It is said that Saint Louis natives tend to be very loyal to their hometown. That is
certainly the case with President Corey Quinn and Principal Phil Pusateri of De
La Salle Middle School at St. Matthew’s. While both come from non-Lasallian
backgrounds, these two men have embraced the Lasallian mission and clearly live it
out daily in St. Louis.
Phil was the first to find his way to De La Salle. A graduate of Washington
University in St. Louis, he began teaching part-time at DLS in 2002, a year after
the school opened. Soon, however, he began teaching full-time and in 2007,
Phil became Principal. He recalls fondly the early LAMS gatherings where he
experienced first-hand how the Lasallian mission is carried out in the Miguel
schools. Phil was also part of the fourth cohort of the Lasallian Leadership
Institute, where he deepened his commitment to the Lasallian mission. Phil
speaks about his time at DLS: “I am lucky to have identified my vocation, which
is in the field of urban education. Students from low-income families deserve a
high quality education, just as I was blessed with.” Phil also credits DLS Founder
Bob Sweeny and colleague Helen Friedel “for passing on the Lasallian values to
the school community.”
Corey became President of De La Salle in 2008, after having taught high school
for ten years, first at Rockhurst in Kansas City and then at De Smet in St. Louis.
While in Kansas City, Corey was invited by a colleague to go along on a service
trip to St. Louis. Corey said: “Little did I know that she and I and a handful
of high school students would spend that weekend cleaning out the facility (at
St. Matthew’s parish) that would one day become De La Salle Middle School! You can imagine my surprise when I showed up to interview years later and found
the place strangely familiar!”
Currently in the Lasallian Leadership Institute, Corey recalled an early moment
in his career at DLS: “I’ll never forget the first time that I had to lead a large group
in prayer at De La Salle. I was so nervous, because the group was comprised
largely of men who had graduated from Christian Brothers College High School
more than fifty years ago. I had no idea what being
Lasallian meant at that point. Nearly three years later,
I recognize that being Lasallian means to feel a special
kind of zeal to humbly serve as an ambassador of Christ,
particularly for those who are not among the ‘elite’ in
our world. It is the humble nature of the Lasallian way
of proceeding that I most admire and feel drawn to.”
Both Corey and Phil juggle the many and varied
demands of their administrative tasks at DLS with the
equally demanding tasks of marriage and family. Phil
and his wife Maura have two young daughters, and
Corey and his wife Amanda have three children. Add
to that the fact that both men are pursuing doctorates
in education at St. Louis University, and it is clear that
Phil and Corey have their hands full. It is also clear that
these two Lasallian school leaders work together very
well as a team and embody the faith and zeal that are
hallmarks of the Lasallian spirit.
Let’s hope that these two St. Louis natives continue to
make their home at De La Salle for many years to come.

Brother Joseph Martin, Director of Senior Brothers
Brother Álvaro Rodríguez Echeverría, Superior
General, arrived in Chicago on April 3rd to
begin his visit of the Midwest District. He
was accompanied by Brother Robert Schieler,
General Councilor, who traveled with him to
meet the Brothers, Lasallians, faculty, staff
and students in five Midwestern states. Brother
Francis Carr, Visitor, and Brother Larry Schatz,
Visitor-Designate, traveled with them. The visit
lasted ten days and offered Brother Álvaro an
overview of the different kinds of educational
ministries that the Brothers and Partners sponsor
as part of the Lasallian mission.
The tour started with a flight on a Lewis

Immersion Program and some students from St. Mary’s University and then attended a campus liturgy with
Bishop John Quinn presiding. During an afternoon convocation Brother Michael Collins and Brother Jeffrey
Gros were awarded honorary doctoral degrees. Later in the day Saint Mary’s Press hosted a reception for the
visiting Brothers. The day concluded at a dinner with the Brothers of the Winona area.
In Chicago Brother Álvaro visited the Brother David Darst Center and spent time with the Brothers living at
Resurrection Retirement Community and Resurrection Life Center. Several days later at Lewis University
he attended a luncheon with the Brothers and with some of the key university administrators and some
participants from several Lasallian formation programs. In Memphis, Bishop Terry Steib presided at a liturgy
on the campus of Christian Brothers High School. In addition to the students and faculty of CBHS, some
students and staff from the other two Lasallian ministries, as well as all of the Brothers of Memphis, were
present for Mass. During a convocation at CBU Brother Superior received the Maurelian Medal, which
is named after the Brother who founded CBU one hundred and forty years ago. A few days later Brother
Superior and the other Brothers attended a student liturgy at Bishop Kelley High School in Tulsa where
Bishop Edward Slattery presided.
While visiting the District, Brother Álvaro met with faculty, staff and students at several San Miguel Schools –
De La Salle at St. Matthew in St. Louis, San Miguel in Tulsa, and San Miguel Middle School in Minneapolis.
At De La Salle at St. Matthew he and the other Brothers attended the Star Luncheon, which is a monthly event
for students and staff to celebrate their accomplishments at the end of the trimester. Later that day the Brothers
visited Christian Brothers College High School and attended a dinner with the Brothers of the St. Louis area.

Brother Superior also had the opportunity
to meet with Board Members, Lasallian
Volunteers, Lasallian Youth, and members of
the LLI, Buttimer, LSJI and IALU formation
programs. The meetings took places in several
cities around the Midwest, and Brother Álvaro
offered his comments and encouragement to all
the groups. At Wildwood, MO, he joined the
celebration of the 125th anniversary of La Salle
Institute and enjoyed a luncheon with staff
members and Brothers.
The visitation ended at Saint Patrick High
School in Chicago where the Brothers were
guests for part of the 150th anniversary

the day Brother Álvaro met with the Brothers of the Chicago area. On his last full day in Chicago he attended
the meetings of the Mission and Ministry Council and the District Council at the Burr Ridge office and then
joined both councils for an evening dinner.
During his two week trip Brother Álvaro participated in other events and attended other luncheons and dinners.
His visit gave him a comprehensive overview of the Lasallian Mission as it is promoted in the Midwest District.
He could not help but be impressed with the faith and zeal of so many students, faculty, staff and Brothers in the
diverse educational ministries that he saw. On April 16th he and Brother Robert departed for the District of San
Francisco where they will see other Lasallians supporting the educational values of John Baptist de La Salle.

Our Ministries Celebrate Milestones Anniversaries
The 50th Anniversary celebration of La Salle High School, Cincinnati,
Ohio, affords the opportunity to reflect upon what has made LaSalle
an outstanding high school. It began with the philosophy established in
1960 by the Christian Brothers and a group of dedicated laymen. That
philosophy, simply stated, was that all young men of diverse academic
and socio-economic backgrounds deserve to receive the finest learning
experience possible guided by Christian teachings. The celebration of
La Salle’s 50th Anniversary includes a year-long calendar of events for
alumni, past and current students and parents, friends and benefactors. La
Salle has instituted three exciting programs this year. In the fall, freshmen
and sophomore students were issued tablet computers. The Lasallian
Scholars Institute is an honors program that serves as a means to engage
companies, alumni, and students in a unique learning dialogue designed to increase
student career awareness and community involvement. The De La Salle Signum Fidei
Institute is a four-year required course that instructs students how to become serviceminded leaders and that develops the whole person. www.cincinnatilasalle.net/
In 2002, San Miguel Schools founded the Gary Comer Campus in the
Austin neighborhood, serving students from 6th-8th grades and their families. Celebrating its 10th Anniversary, the Gary Comer Campus, Chicago, Illinois
has served nearly 300 at risk students in the under
resourced Austin community, providing them with
an educational model that includes an extended day
schedule and year-round calendar, individualized
instruction with a 10:1 student teacher ratio, and
strong parental involvement. San Miguel Schools
transform lives and neighborhoods through education,
commitment and love. www.sanmiguelchicago.org
De La Salle Middle School is proud to celebrate ten years of service
to the young people of North St. Louis City, Missouri. Founded
in 2001, De La Salle is a member of the NativityMiguel Network of
Schools and serves at-risk students in grades 6-8. With the support of a
dedicated staff and through its innovative Graduate Support Program,
De La Salle students have achieved a high school graduation rate which
is double that of neighboring schools.
De La Salle hosted its first major gala
event on May 7th and is also planning
a community celebration on June
25th, both in celebration of the 10year milestone. www.delasallems.org "Let us remember that we are in the holy presence of God."
"Live, Jesus in our hearts...forever!"

he Heritage Society was established to recognize our friends, our Partners in Mission, who have established
a “Planned Gift” with the Christian Brothers of the Midwest to further our shared ministries. A planned
gift can be a will bequest or any one of many life income plans, such as a trust or a gift annuity. We are
deeply grateful to the Heritage Society Members for their thoughtfulness, their generosity and their
willingness to share in the Mission.

On these special days, and others, we pause to remember
how much we owe to these very special men and women in
our lives. It is a good time to say “thank you” through our
prayers, a phone call, a visit, a thoughtful remembrance.
Our prayer cards, “In Loving Memory of,” “In Honor
of,” and “A Healing Prayer” can express our most sincere
efforts to honor...remember...or console... the hearts of our
friends and family.

Memorial Cards
Memorial Gifts are a meaningful way to Express Sympathy
on the loss of a friend or loved one.
Memorials are also a dignified way to Remember a loved one,
friend or neighbor on their birthday, anniversary, in
time of sickness or grieving, as well as on Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, a
special occasion or any day.
Both those giving and those receiving these memorial cards are
remembered by the De La Salle Christian Brothers in their daily prayers,
at Mass and in all their good works.

Adopt-a-
Student
T he Christian Brothers Adopt-A-Student
Program began in 1987 to assist needy students
with financial aid to realize an education at a
Lasallian School. Money is raised by contacting
foundations, corporations and individuals for direct
grants to the program. The grant money is sent to
the school, and the school matches a needy student
with the scholarship grant. All scholarship grants
go directly to the student’s tuition.

n The theme for this year’s celebration, January 30 through February 5, 2011, was “Catholic Schools:
A+ for America.” This annual week long celebration focuses attention on the good work being done by the
nation’s Catholic Schools. Catholic Schools Week is a joint project of the National Catholic Education Association
(NCEA) and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB.) As the National Catholic Educational
Association (NCEA) explained: “Catholic schools give a high level of service to the nation (the A+ level) by
serving students from all economic backgrounds and giving them a strong academic and moral foundation,
allowing them to succeed in life, serving in the government, industry, business, non-profit and educational fields.”

n During the spring of 2011, Chicago Healthcare Nurse, Sheila
Cusack joined Graduate Nursing students (Sarah Born, Lynn GoodyColamussi, and Angela Simpson) from Lewis University in the
development of a brain health promotion and wellness program. The
students developed six educational modules based on information
gained from round table discussions with local Christian Brothers.
The purpose of the educational modules was to connect the function
of multiple body systems to the brain, explore current and perspective
research, and emphasize the impact of a healthy brain to attaining a
quality life. The first two educational modules were presented April
5th and 8th, 2011, to local Christian Brothers. The ultimate goal is for
Sheila Cusack to share these modules with fellow district nurses to
provide education on brain health for Christian Brothers nationwide.

n Brother Álvaro, Superior General, visited Saint Patrick
High School on April 14th and attended an all-school Mass.
He gave special emphasis to the school’s 150th Anniversary
by bestowing Letters of Affiliation on Principal, Dr. Joseph
G. Schmidt, and alumnus and benefactor Mr. Lowell I. Stahl.
He noted that a highlight of his visits to Lasallian institutions
around the globe is the reality of how the pillars of the
Lasallian
mission—
Faith, Community and
Service—manifest
themselves in daily interactions. “Everywhere the most wonderful experience
is the community experience and the quality of the relationships among
students, among students and teachers, and among teachers and parents,” said
Brother Alvaro. “This is the most important gift of Lasallians to the world.”
The Most Reverend Thaddeus Jakubowski, retired Auxiliary Bishop of
Chicago, presided at the liturgy.
