ALEPH: Alliance
for Jewish Renewal
th
presents the 15 International
Connecting With the Divine, Within & Around Us
July 1-7, 2013
Franklin Pierce University

Welcome Blessing
ALEPH Kallah 2013
A blessing upon your arrival
We have all made an important journey.
We come from near and far (some very,
very far!); we are teachers and students,
musicians and artisans, grandparents and
grandchildren. We have come for different
reasons … and for the same reasons. Each one of you
is now part of the tapestry of this sacred community.
May this Kallah become your home away from home
and its participants like family during the coming
week. May those you love be near you in thoughts
and dreams. May old friendships be rekindled, and
new ones sparked.
May the questions that brought you here be
illuminated. May your prayers be seeds carried on a
gentle wind. May text, tradition, song and dance
enhance your connection to the Source of All.
We each travel a path like no other’s. We wish for
you that the coming days help light yours. May these
days contribute to the renewing of our tradition, or
world, and ourselves.
-The ALEPH Kallah 2013 Planning Committee
This program booklet was designed to make your Kallah experience as smooth and easy as
possible. Yet, we may not have covered all questions, and we may have made mistakes.
Please keep your sense of humor and flexibility, and be sure to check our bulletin boards for
updates and corrections. Blessings for a transformative week!

ACCOMMODATIONS
Check Out Time
Check Out is Sunday, July 7th at 12:00pm
(noon). So that Franklin Pierce University can
prepare rooms for the ALEPH Smicha week
which begins on the day of your departure, we
ask that if you are living in Lakeview
Apartments, that you plan to be packed up by
10:00am (so Houskeeping can turn over the
rooms). There will be University staff on site
to assist you with the check-out process.
Checkout process:
 Please bring your keys and linens
(sheets, towels, pillow, and blanket) to
Alumni Lounge (where you
registered).
 When everything has been returned,
you will be given the envelope with
the security deposit you left when you
checked in.
 If anything is missing (key, pillows,
blankets, towels, sheets, etc.) your key
deposit will be forfeited.
Kitchen Facilities In many dorms there are
refrigerators in common areas (in addition to
the main dining hall). Please label any food
you want to store in the refrigerator and be
considerate of others.
Laundry & Linens Your linens are yours for
the week. Please care for them accordingly.
Laundry facilities are located in each of the
residence halls and use of the washers and
Page 10
dryers is free of charge. You must supply your
own detergent (sold in the shuk).
AFTERNOON, EVENING & LATE NIGHT EVENTS
Affinity Groups provide a way to meet people
with similar concerns or life situations. Affinity
groups will meet Monday through Thursday
evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 7:50 p.m. For
specific room assignments, see Table of
Contents for page number.
Choirs. This year at Kallah we have abundant
opportunity to sing your heart out! Choose
between, or experience all of these musical
opportunities (& perform too!):
A cappella Choir Come together for a
week of a cappella singing. The choir is the
ideal community that allows the individual
to discover their own most beautiful voice
and hold its own while listening to and
helping others, recognizing that the whole
sounds only as good as the individual
parts. The richness, depth
and complexities of harmonies elucidate
the richness, depth and complexity of
texts and give them new meaning. Our
songs will affirm our commitment to
social justice as well as celebrate life cycle
rituals that mark the common
and uncommon events of our lives. Choir
Director Cantor Linda Hirschhorn.
Rehearsals will be daily after dinner in
Cheney Hall.
Intergenerational Choir Join the fun as
grandparents, parents and kids sing
together. Choir Director Fran Avni
Rehearsals will be daily after lunch (see
schedule) in Cheney Hall.

Films at Kallah Each year we are thrilled to
present films of distinction. Please see the
descriptions in the film section, and the
listings on each day’s schedule, for more
details.
Announcements
Announcements will be posted near the dining
room entrance. To conserve resources, there will
be no daily newsletter.
ATM
You can find an ATM on campus in the Glass Foyer
of the Campus Center, across from the
Information Desk.
C
Class Changes Your name tag also includes your
morning and afternoon classes. For class changes,
go to the Guest Relations Desk in the Campus
Center near the Dining Room during Guest
Relations hours. Please note that each teacher has
indicated an “Add Policy” and respect their
wishes.
Commuters You are welcome to arrive at Franklin
Pierce for morning davennen. Remember that
breakfast, lunch and dinner are included in your
program fees.
Customs/Minhag
Clean Up After Yourself We’re guests of
Franklin Pierce University. Be sure to clean up
after yourself. This includes “bussing” your
own tray in the dining hall after you’ve
finished eating, and taking all your “stuff” out
of class meeting rooms when finished with the
space.
G~d Language The Jewish people, in our long
and rich history, have sought for ways to
understand, relate to and address The One
with which we are all a part. Each generation,
each community has found ways to serve its
needs. We continue that process today as we
strengthen our connection to the earlier
generations whether standing at Mount Sinai,
entering Canaan, or living wherever
galut/diaspora has carried them.
Over the past 3000 years, we have had many
ways of addressing G~d, the Source of the
Universe, with each name focusing on a
particular aspect of the divine masculine.
“Adonai” (in Hebrew) or “My Lord” (in
English), are the historical conventions used in
many prayer books, but these represent only
one way of experiencing our connection to
G~d.
In Jewish Renewal contexts, feminist ritualists
have plumbed the tradition for Hebrew and
English female names for the Divine. Others
opt for gender neutral strategies, such as “The
One” or “The Source of All.
Whatever your inclination or belief, we
encourage you to to stay open to experience
G~d in all aspects, and to experiment with G~d
language that works for you.
Shabbat Shabbat is a time for celebration,
learning and sharing with other people in a
relaxed and informal atmosphere. It is a
blessing to savor Shabbat in community.
We also realize that people have different
understandings of how Shabbat should be
observed. The norms we have outlined below
allow for varying Shabbat practices, while
setting some guidelines in order to enable
each individual to feel comfortable. When one
is in public community space, we would
appreciate your sensitivity to the needs of
other people and your cooperation in
observing these norms.
 We do not conduct Kallah business
Shabbat – eg., registration, payment of
bills, etc.
 Please refrain from smoking in all public
areas.
 Musical instruments and microphones
may be used.
Page 11
Logistics A - Z
ALEPH Kallah 2013

Tape recorders may be used if all present
are aware of their use and prior consent
has been obtained.
 We do not have a norm in place for
photography or electronic device use
when in public spaces. We invite you to
please be aware of your community, and if
you ‘choose to use’ on Shabbos, either
inquire of your neighbors, or, should
someone complain, be prepared to move
to a private space to complete your task.
Please feel free to observe Shabbat as you
choose in the private space of your own room.
Please see the Shabbat section of this booklet
(WHITE) for more information about this
glorious time!



Shin (shhhhh) Buttons Each of us received a
button at Registration, designed with the
Hebrew letter shin, to remind each other that
a “shhh…” is appropriate at certain times. A
person wearing the button is asking others to
honor his or her sacred, silent space. This
simply means, “Let’s talk some other time.”
Being quiet does not necessarily mean being
sad or unsociable. Silence for a period of time
can be a peaceful and rejuvenating
experience.
D
Dining Room
The Dining Room is a place of very high energy
because this is where EVERYONE comes together
for our nourishment from G~d. When hundreds of
spiritual souls are all in one place at the same
time, it can be quite overwhelming. It is a good
idea to close your eyes and take a few deep
breaths when you sit down to eat.
Meals will be served during the following hours:
Breakfast: 6:45 – 8:45
Lunch: 11:30 – 1:30
Dinner: (except Friday night) 5:30 – 7:30
Page 12



Dining Room Liaison If you need something
(coffee run out?) or are feeling lost during
the first couple of meals, look for someone
with a bright orange t-shirt for help. They
are the liaisons with the kitchen staff. Please
see them rather than approaching kitchen
staff directly with requests. This year Chaim
Leib (Howie) Schneider serves as your Dining
Room Liaison along with the young men and
women of the Kesher program.
Handwashing. We have set up a Netilat
Yadayim/Motzi (hand washing) station in
the Dining Room. This is intended as an
opportunity to do the ritual of handwashing, make a blessing on the bread, and
center oneself before we begin the meal.
Kashrut ALEPH recognizes the importance
of Kashrut as part of our religious and
cultural heritage. The Kashrut of the Dining
facilities is under supervision of our
Mashgiach (Kashrut Supervisors), Rabbi
Dennis Beck-Berman and Rabbi David
Seidenberg. All utensils ovens and facilities
of the dining hall have been kashered by
members of our community under their
supervision. All products used have been
approved by them. All meals are parve dairy
/ vegetarian; there will also be fish. No one
may bring food into the dining area without
clearing it with Rabbi Dennis Beck-Berman
or David Seidenberg. All questions about the
specifics of kashrut should be directed to
them. The Dining Room Liasons will be
clearly visible (in bright orange shirts) and
can direct you to them.
Silent Dining will be observed an area
designated with a sign (behind the glass in
the long and narrow dining room). Please
respect silence if you eat there.
Bentsching / Blessing After Meals We have
Birkat Hamazon (Blessing after the meal)
benschers on the tables. The sheet has a
number of different styles of blessing.
Seating for Meals We have many people
registered for the Kallah. Please allow
families with children, people setting up the
evening programs and others who may have

special needs to pass through the line.
Though you may be hungry, please do your
best to maintain a spirit of ease and
generosity while waiting in line.
Kid’s Kallah breaks for lunch. Parents are
responsible for their own children at that
time. We have found that the younger
children need a little time with their parents
in the middle of the day. Older children may
eat with their peers; but parents, please
know that you are responsible to make sure
they clean up after themselves!!!
Please DO NOT REMOVE any dishes, glasses
or silverware from the Dining Room! They
are extremely limited and have just enough
for our group. If you take them out we will
run out!!!!
E
Emergencies
First Aid We have stocked some very basic
first aid supplies in the office, such as Tylenol,
Band-Aids, peroxide, tweezers, a strip
thermometer and the like. You are welcome
to use them when necessary (parents must
administer first aid to their children – the
office staff cannot be responsible for this).
We also have a Doc On Call. Please see Guest
Relations if you have a serious medical need.
Serious Injury or Emergency Care The nearest
hospital is
Monadnock
Community
Hospital. The
number to call in
an emergency is the hospital’s main
switchboard, (603) 924-7191. To call an
Ambulance, (603) 924-8090.
Ethics Advocates ALEPH is grateful to have Charles
Kaplan ([email protected]) and Sherril Gilbert
([email protected]) as Ethics Advocates.
They are available to address ethics concerns and
complaints of a serious nature. Charles’s cell
phone is: 778 231 3949. Sherril’s is: 514-3868874. Because both are from Canada, their cell
phone will accept texts only. Please see
attachment A at the end of this section for more
info. For indentification purposes, their photos
are below:
G
Golf Carts Golf Carts & Vans will be available for
the use of our guests during transition times
between programs and meals. Please be aware
that these carts are primarily intended for those
unable to get around without help. If you are
already seated on a cart, and someone with a
clear need is waiting, please do the right thing and
give up your seat. If you need to schedule a ride
ahead of time, please let us know at the Guest
Relations table.
Guest Relations Desk Have a question? Need
some help? Our Guest Relations Desk is here to
serve you. We are located in the Campus Center

questions or needs relating to anything about your
retreat experience.

Lost and Found coordinator: Jennifer Coburn. You
will need to pay for any shipping, if necessary. (At
previous Kallot, as much as 70 pounds of clothing
and other items were left behind.) Please take
care to gather all of your things as it is very time
consuming to deal with returning lost and found
items after the Kallah. At some point after Kallah
we will donate unclaimed lost items. If you lose
keys or other valuables, see Guest Relations.
Lunch & Learn Got a voracious appetite for
learning??? Kallah is debuting our new “Lunch &

some interesting area for discussion! Lunch &
Learn will take place in the large dining room to
the left (near outside door).
Thursday 12:30 – 1:30 EcoJudaism Lunch &
Learn How can mitzvot and a Torah
perspective help us respond responsibly to the
eco-crises of our time? What is the growing
edge of a "kashrut", a true sense of
appropriate consumption? Come add to our
questions and insights at this table talk with
Rabbi Andrea.
Andrea Cohen-Kiener is a
rabbi, farmer and story
teller. She is in residence at
the Rochester Folk Art
Guild in rural NY. Andrea is
dedicated to peaceful
communication
technologies, living simply
and singing with others. She is the spiritual
leader of Congregation P'nai Or in central CT.

Spirit Buddy Program The Kabbalists of S’fat
began their prayer with the following intention:
“For the sake of the union of The Blessed Holy One
with The Sheckhina, I stand here, ready to take
upon myself the mitzvah, ‘You shall love your
fellow human being as yourself,’ and by this merit
may I open my mouth.”
Our practice of Spirit Buddies is the concrete
embodiment of this abstract intention. The daily
practice helps to keep us from the dangers of
inflation, isolation, delusion, and greediness. We
check in with our own souls in the presence of a
discerning friend. Working with Spirit Buddies
requires us to practice “presence.” This requires
letting go of judgment, and of the need to “fix”
our partner or to offer solutions. We search
Page 16
beneath the layers of personality and invite the
pure soul/essence of our partner to be revealed.
Together, we create the safe and sacred space in
which healing, self-realization and transformation
can occur.
During orientation Rabbi Shefa Gold will help us all
understand the kavanah (intention) and keva
(form) of this process.
Sunday Box Lunch (post Kallah) If you would like a
box lunch for Sunday afternoon (7/7), you may
purchase one at the Guest Relations desk before

her gifts with us! We have kids’ sizes S, M, & L and
adults’ S, M, L, & XL. (Hurry! Quantities are

Tikkun Olam Inspired by Meryl Joblin and the film
“Paper Clips,” we will create a "Peace Chain"
together out of fabric the way that children
create chains out of construction paper. This
Peace Chain will symbolically spiritually connect all
humanity and inspire renewal of hope, peace,
vision and love. Each person will write a prayer or
blessing on a piece of fabric that is then attached
to create a chain of fabrics. Each link will be sewn
together with kavannah to manifest the power of
the prayers written. It will be displayed in the
main Tent, and we’ll kvell as a community as we
see the chain increase day by day. Everyone is
invited to add to the chain!
In addition, there will be a separate sign-up sheet
where participants can choose to contribute from
a penny to dollars for each link of the chain. The
money will in part be used to support the Boston
ALEPH Kallah 2013

One Fund (to assist victims and families affected
by the tragic events at the Boston Marathon.) It
will also support Ugandan Abayudaya Jewish
orphans which is also a focus of Kids Kallah.
Please join us! All ages are encouraged to
participate. Stop by Marcucella anytime after
lunch between 1-3, Tuesday , Wednesday, and
Thursday.
Wireless Internet Access (WIFI) For those who still
need to be plugged in, we do have wireless
internet access. Open your network connections
and join the FP-Guest Network. You will need to
accept the terms of the acceptable use policy that
appears in your browser. Also, the Computer Lab
in the DiPeitro Library will be open during normal
library hours.
Program Evaluations We want very much to
continue to improve and to grow, but we need
your help. Please fill out the class evaluations on
the last day. ALSO…on the last page of this section
is a place for you to make notes about what you
felt was best about the week and what could use
some improvement. Please use that space
throughout the week and then leave it in the
Kallah office, or you could mail or email the
comments to us. Your feedback is much
appreciated.

Bogart, Lic. Ac.
Acupuncturist and Herbalist
Hendi earned her BA in psychology for Boston
University and MA in Oriental Medicine, including
Chinese and Japanese acupuncture and Chinese
herbs. She has also earned her degree in
Aromatherapy and Acutonics. Acutonics utilizes
tuning forks to stimulate acupuncture points for
children and others not comfortable with needles.
Hendi treats holistically, taking into account
spiritual and emotional factors. The first stage of
treatment usually addresses the general
constitution and the second stage addresses the
particular symptoms presented. Often symptoms
are ameliorated or resolved from the relaxation
induced by the treatment. She states "It is good to
have acupuncture treatments this week when we
want to be as receptive as we can to all the deep
teaching here at the ALEPH Kallah. When our
bodies, minds and emotions are more at peace, it
gives us more opportunity to engage with the
learning and to allow for transformation.
Acupuncture treats a whole gamut of conditions
such as headaches, PMS symptoms, digestive
ailments, menopausal symptoms, allergies,
backaches…. I look forward to be of service to
enable you to be more easily enriched by the
experience at the Kallah."

Eva works with healers, creative folks and
innovators who feel they're holding back and want
to unleash their power. She offers intuitive
counseling and life coaching on the bodyworkers
table, in a traditional therapy setup, and in
walking sessions. In bodywork sessions, I
integrate light touch and energy work to support
you in unwinding old patterns held in the body
mind. During counseling/coaching sessions, she
draws her own intuition as well as the clients, to
identify the root of whatever challenges you're
facing. Seeing these patterns clearly enables you
to work with them so you can move forward. Eva

Biodynamic CranioSacral Therapy
Craniosacral therapy is a gentle, profoundly
relaxing bodywork that involves tuning into the
flow of cerebrospinal fluid and the body's natural
rhythms to balance the nervous system and to
stimulate self healing. stress related conditions
often improve including anxiety, nervousness,
insomnia, depression, headaches and breathing
difficulties. CST has been used effectively for
musculoskeletal conditions, fibromyalgia and
more. What can you expect from a session? Bery
deep relaxation is the first effect of a biodynamic
session. It balances the brain. Secondly, you are
able to let go of your symptoms slowly and in
many cases actually feel the health in your whole
body as happiness or joy. Thirdly, you get more
mental and physical clarity from the session. This
allows you to make better choices about how to
live and how to heal. CST is performed on a person
fully clothed. For 35 years Sarah has been working
in mind/body therapies. A licensed massage

was created by nurses and is practiced in many

practices a powerful form of trauma release work
called Somatic Experiencing. Developed by
psychologist Peter Levine, Somatic Experiencing is
a very careful and gentle technique for safely
discharging the high-voltage energy of trauma.
Trauma is defined as any event that shocks and
overwhelms the nervous system. Research has
shown that trauma is actually stored in our body
until we find a way to actively release it.
Using one or both of these techniques, Daphne
helps clients alleviate chronic pain conditions:
reduce anxiety and increase the body's relaxation
response; recover from painful childhood
accidents; strengthen the body's immune system;
prepare or recover from surgery; heal trauma
from car accidents, whiplash, and falls and more.

Schedule
Diverse morning and evening davennen (prayer) experiences are highlights of our
weekdays together. Take a risk! Check out a creative minyan one day-- a chant, meditation, yoga or other
offering--, and a traditional minyan on another. In the pages that follow, you’ll find a chart providing the
theme and type of each service, the day and start time, and special notes pertaining to some services.
Tachlis (The Details) All services are held indoors unless otherwise noted. Brief bios of service leaders follow
the chart for each day’s services. When someone is leading two or three different prayer services, their bio
will appear on the day of their FIRST service. Shabbat services are listed in their own section.

Ma’ariv Night time, according to our Midrashic Tradition,
was the time Jacob went into the fields to pray and find
peace. In this short service, we will sing a few gentle
melodies, say a Standing Quiet Prayer to ourselves, and
feel the comfort of being in solitude, while still being in
community. May it give us the centering we need for the
rest of the night, and for the rest of the week.

Shacharit. Yoga Shalom brings together body,
mind, and spirit. Combining the two powerful
spiritual disciplines of Jewish worship and yoga
practice, Yoga Shalom leads to deeper
understandings of both. Each day’s practice will
begin with Kirtan Chant and continue with the
deepening of the breath. We will continue with a
one hour Yoga Practice which mirrors the
shacharit service and embodies each prayer in
a deeply spiritual and physical way. We end
with stretching, deep relaxation and a healing
circle. Open your heart, quiet your mind and
restore your spirit with Yoga Shalom.
Shacharit. Join us out in nature for a deep and
joyful connection to God through the expansive
experience of the nature metaphors embedded
within Jewish morning prayer and Torah. Chant,
movement, text and walking meditations will be
paired with the basic, traditional order of prayer.
Shacharit. Are there too many words in your
davvenen these days? Let’s try working with
six. We will explore the many ways the Shma
can transport us to davvenen bliss through
chant, gently guided meditation, and light
authentic movement.
Shacharit. Integrates melodies of Hannah

Shlomo Carlebach, Shefa Gold, and, Efriam

Shacharit. We will davven together – in English!
The nusach (traditional prayer melodies) will
help us get into a melodic groove, & using
English will shine a new light on the meanings
of the prayers, whether familiar or unfamiliar.

Shacharit. Each morning we remember the temple
service, the basis for our morning tefillah (prayer).
Each day three fires were renewed: the animal, the

morning service by beginning with a meditative
exploration of these offerings: our life energy (anima),
our intention (incense) and our attention (light of the
mind/menorah).

and help us place these gifts deep inside our hearts,
so we may use them as we move forward. With light

Bli neder A ‘neder’ is a vow. Many Jews take the spoken word –especially vows--very seriously. Due to the strength of a
neder, and the fact that one must absolutely be fulfilled if made, many pious Jews engage in the practice of saying "b'li
neder" after a statement that they will do something, meaning that their statement is not a binding neder in the event
they cannot fulfill their pledge due to unforeseen circumstances.

Tuesday, July 2: Re-imagining Shmita
During biblical times, there was a shared cultural calendar cycle which powerfully re-adjusted agriculture
and commerce every seventh year. During this time period, all debts would be forgiven, agricultural
lands would lie fallow, private land holdings would become open to the commons, and staples such as
food storage and perennial harvests would be redistributed and accessible to all. This year was called
Shmita, translated as the ‘Year of Release’ and more widely known as the Sabbatical Year. Come learn
about the growing movement to re-imagine the values of this tradition to support our own efforts
towards local food systems, resilient economies, and healthy communities.

About our Sponsoring ALEPH Programs and their Representatives
CDEEP: Center for Devotional Energy and Ecstatic Practice (C-DEEP) ...a resource-place for
communities and individuals who want to explore the deep treasures of Judaism in order to cultivate
the devotional and ecstatic aspects of their lives. One of C-Deep’s programs is Kol Zimra.
Kol Zimra Chant Leaders Training Program builds a Mishkan for spiritual work. The sacred phrase
becomes the tool of that building project. By using that tool, we are gradually initiated into an intimate
relationship with text. The sacred text becomes our modality for… healing, community-building, deep
inner exploration, the doorway into meditative states, cultivating midot, connection with the ancestors,
with God and with our deepest truth.

In Your Light We See Light – Celebrating
the Legacy of Rabbi Zalman SchacterShalomi
( 45 min.) Sally Plone
On the occasion of his 80th
birthday, Reb Zalman wrote,
“What I realy want…..is the
knowledge that my life’s
work will live on.” This film
celebrates Reb Zalman’s
legacy through his words
and the words of his
students, addressing topics ranging from
meaningful prayer to the Chassidic tradition to
ecumenism. It is a delight to sample some of
Reb Zalman’s best teaching.Director Sally Plone
made this film as a labor of love and with a
deep sense of gratitude. Also a practicing
psychotherapist, Sally uses film to find the
beauty and uniqueness in our lives, and to
celebrate how we are touched and enriched by
each other.

Yiddish: A Tale of
Survival
(60 min) Abigail Hirsch
In this film the history of
Yiddish is revealed by
exploring the lives and
careers of three Yiddish
performers. The first,
Shmuel Atzmon, is an Israeli actor who founded
the Yiddishpiel Theater and has been acting for
50 years. Bryna Wasserman, from Montreal, is
the heir to the Dora Wasserman Yiddish theatre
legacy. And lastly, we meet singer and actress
Milena Kartowski, who at the young age of 23
has discovered Yiddish and is helping to bring it
to a new generation. The film explores the
paths that brought each artist to Yiddish and
how it has shaped their lives. The film is deeply
moving and surprisingly entertaining. Director
Abigail Hirsch was born in Hungary and
currently lives in Montreal. After spending
years as a social worker, she decided to
dedicate herself to creating high quality

(66 min) Lucy McCauley
2:15pm | Petrocelli 112 |
Film: Facing the Nazi Era:
Conversations in Southern Germany
This film recounts the legacy of WW2 and the
Holocaust through the lens of German non-Jews
in the small University town of Tubingen in
Southern Germany. The film documents a reemerging Jewish community and its efforts to
engage the community at large. A very real and
uniquely honest conversation, McCauley has an
uncanny ability to draw her subjects in and the
viewer benefits from the open and surprisingly
candid results. Director Lucy McCauley’s travel
essays have appeared in such publications as
The Atlantic Monthly, The Los Angeles Times,
Harvard Review, and The San Francisco

OUR PROCESS DURING THE
FILM SCREENINGS During this
evening’s program we'll learn a few useful
exercises from the Compassionate Listening
training program, and then watch brief
segments of two films that provide witness
from Israel / Palestine, a precious, conflicted
part of the world. This will give us something to
respond to as we practice what we’ve learned.
Here’s a brief description of the two
documentary films we’ll be
watching:
CHILDREN OF
ABRAHAM
2:15pm | Petrocelli112 | Film:
Children of Abraham
The film follows Jewish Compassionate
Listening Program participants (two of the trip
participants are Jewish Renewal rabbis!) as they
visit with and listen to Israelis and Palestinians –
from leaders to refugees—and seek to
understand the complexities of religious,
political and human rights issues. Participants
include Jewish leaders and professionals
ranging from secular to observant. This
beautiful documentary introduces the
Compassionate Listening reconciliation model,
and humanizes each Israeli and Palestinian
portrayed. The film delivers a compelling
message that conflict can be transformed
through the simple act of listening.
Audience Feedback Children of Abraham
compellingly documents the profound
possibilities within a society in which friends and
enemies alike attune themselves to the voice of
the other. It should serve as an urgent reminder
of how badly we transgress and how much we
forfeit when we dismiss the power of listening
as too simple. This is not a promotion of a naive
quick fix, but rather a call to the wrenching but
essential heroism that Jewish tradition says
inheres in making one’s enemy into one’s friend.
Page 48
CROSSING THE LINES
2:15pm | Petrocelli112 | Film:
Crossing the Lines
Crossing the Lines is a 1.5 hourlong series of interviews with
folks who are party to the Israel
Palestine conflict as they engaged in a
Compassionate Listening (TM) session. At
Kallah, we'll listen to just a few of these 5-10
minute interviews. The interviews with 15
Israelis and Palestinians were selected from
over forty hours of footage from
Compassionate Listening delegations. This video
will expose you to a wide range of people and
viewpoints and bring you into the hearts and
minds of Israelis and Palestinians beyond the
news media.
Audience Feedback Thank you for this up-todate cross-section of the varied perceptions,
deep feelings, and equal humanity of two fine
peoples. This is it, for those who are looking for
one film to better understand different sides of
the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. --Libby & Len

2. WEAVING THE GENERATIONS:
Renewing the Flow of
Intergenerational Connectivity
| Lakeside Center | We are connected to those
who have walked before us and those who will
walk after us. The fabric of multi-generational
community has become frayed by modernity,
inhibiting the experience of living as a web of
Intergenerational community. We stand at the
threshold of a Great
Turning where a
healthy future
depends on the ability
for human societies to
recognize the power
of the village and the centrality of
intergenerational community to planetary
prosperity.
Evening & Late Night Activities
How do we renew and revitalize our connectivity
to all of our relations? Spend a powerful evening
of exploring, witnessing and seeing through the
eyes of elders and youngers, opening hearts to the
wisdom of experience and the promise of new
horizons, to lessons from the ages and visions of
the future. Join Rabbi Shefa Gold, Aleph Executive
Director Joe Laur, Aleph Rabbinical student Mia
Miriam Cohen, and Wilderness Torah Founding
Director Zelig Golden to explore the power and
importance of weaving the generations through
sacred chant, face-to-face encounter, and deep
questions of the soul.

1. STREAMING SHABBAAT
| Cheney | Modern Dance Performance by
SELMADANSE featuring Joanie Block and Dancers
Stories from Talmud, the Holocaust and Joanie’s
own memory are the inspiration for her new
work-in-progress about the universal power of
light. This evening’s performance is a preview
show that will be performed this coming fall in
Cambridge and Newton MA.
The inspiration for tonight’s performance When
Boston based choreographer Joanie Block was
diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1995, her
husband Sandy wanted to send her into surgery
with a gift that would calm and assure her of her
family’s presence. The gift he offered was an
image of the four of them around the Shabbat
dinner table, still, silent, holding hands, a circle of
energy. Joanie succumbed to anesthesia,
summoned the image, and let its light stream in.
2. THE REAL ME
| Tent | Performance
by rocker Naomi Less.
Naomi will perform
selections from her
album "The Real Me," a
tour through her own
personal wrestling with
self-worth, theology
and being herself, and
interact with her audience through challenging
questions about identity and Judaism. With
Naomi, you can sing along as you contemplate
meaning behind the lyrics. Naomi Less engages,
enlightens and empowers worldwide
audiences through concerts, worship and
educational workshops and training. Songwriter.

KIDS SHABBAT is a fun and
joyous time. It begins with a Children’s Mikveh at
the lake, moves into a spirited Abayudaya-style
Kabbalat Shabbat with drumming, dance and
song, and then, to share in the entire community’s
Shabbat walk where they kids will be eagerly
collecting tzedeka for the Abayudaya Orphan
Education Fund.
Shabbat morning will bring yet another
Abayudaya-style Family Shabbat Davennen. The
children will use their own Art Scrolled Torah,
handcrafted cover and yad (pointer). Parents and
the greater community are most welcome to
attend. Finally, Kids Kallah Shabbat will culminate
in wonderful performances:
“The Story of Kintu and the Journeys of the
Children of Israel” Filled with music and the songs
of the Abayudaya, “The Story of Kintu and the
Journeys of the Children of Israel” combines an
Ugandan folktale with the double parashot

their Sharings from the Wilderness, where we will
be honored to hear about and witness the changes that
these young people have gone through and be inspired

The Gift of the Sabbath
...the seventh day is a time of otherworldly freedom in
which we are able to break free of the walls that
constrain us during the six days of the week. In holy
time we step outside of ourselves, beyond the
‘anokhiyut’—the selfhood--of ordinary life, and we are
able to experience the ultimate freedom of
consciousness.

To enter Shabbat, the Kabbalists say, is to enter holy ground,
to come home to the divinity in ourselves and others. It is a
day of deep and joyous transformation (of time, divinity, and
person) and a day of multi-tiered tikkun or restoration of
relationships, ecosystem, and soul. In this workshop, we will
briefly study kabbalistic texts and will learn (and do!) key
practices for more fully entering this day.

Yoga Shalom presents a unique experience that brings
together body, mind, and spirit. Combining the two powerful
spiritual disciplines of Jewish worship and yoga practice, Yoga
Shalom leads to deeper understandings of both. The practice
will begin with Kirtan Chant and the deepening of the breath.
We will continue with a one hour Yoga Practice which
mirrors the shacharit service and embodies each prayer in a
deeply spiritual and physical way. We end with stretching,
deep relaxation and a healing circle. Open your heart, quiet
your mind and restore your spirit with Yoga Shalom.
Come and experience the beauty of creating our prayers
from our own dance. Paulette will teach some basic dance
processes as well as guide us in movement meditation. We
will focus on Ruach- the Breath/Spirit- as the organic
foundation of our dance. You will have the opportunity to
more deeply express your sacred, creative process. From the
dance/movement we will explore the emergence of original
prayer, in written form.
Join the children celebrating the beginning of Shabbat
Abayudaya-style - with drumming, dance and song, guided by
Lorne Mallin and Rivkah Coburn, who have spent the week
teaching the children about the Abayudaya, a Jewish
community of 2,000 located in Mbale, Uganda, through the
arts woven into this joyful entree into Shabbat. Parents - who
will bless and be blessed by their children - and others
seeking blessings - are most welcome to join in!

Each Kabbalat Shabbat is an opportunity to go into holy, happy, mystic
space. By blending laughter and gravitas, melodies and silences, we are
able to make peace with the week that was, and "Le Da'at et Hashem
B'Simcha", to know G!d in Celebration. Come to this Service if you'd like a
sweet completion to the week's classes, with a singing, listening, dancing
and praying community. Kabbalat Shabbat is for "moving into Shabbos
Time," in the words of Rabbi Rayzel Raphael. Come and add who you are
to it.... so we can feel what rebbe Bob Marley, zt"l, once called having "One
Love One Heart."
This Kabbalat Shabbat service weaves and incorporates a traditional
Shabbat evening service with chanting, silence, call/response and words of
Torah. The service will feel familiar and different all at once. It is patterned
on the music and 'vibe' of a typical Romemu service. The intention of the
service is to practice the Presence of G-d, the One called by many names
though known through One Taste. Please join us as we taste and see that
G-d is good.

Gospel
Experience
Our voices will join in song to experience Lisa's original
Jewish Gospel music which combines her 25 years in the
cantorate with her work uniting interfaith choirs in
community programming. We will warm up our voices and
learn a variety of songs from Social Justice to liturgical
gems. You'll walk away with a packet of music that you
can share. Bring an open heart and work with Lisa to
create a truly unique Jewish Gospel Experience!
“The whole world is waiting to sing the song of Shabbos!”
So come and sing, bring an instrument if you wish, bring a
song to share if you like, and let’s continue to celebrate
Shabbos with a wide variety of music. We’ll do some
Shlomo tunes, some niggunim, some Israeli songs, some
traditional and contemporary Z’miros, and we’ll also
probably do some Beatles, Paul Simon, Jack Gabriel, and
maybe (if we get silly) faux-Russian folksongs.
Come taste the deliciousness of Shabbat with a feast of
stories. Join Devorah Zaslow and holy Maggidim from
around the country to hear tales that will make you laugh,
make you cry, and make you delight in the essence of
Shabbat.

“The Story of Kintu and the Journeys of the Children of Israel”
combines an Ugandan folktale with the double parashot
Mattot/Massei, and children’s own words, as we learn about our own
journeys and the promises we make along the way. Filled with music
and the songs of the Abayudaya, the story follows Nambi, daughter of
the King of the Cloud Kingdom, as she follows the rainbow to Earth
and a new life. Similarly, the Children of Israel journey towards their
new life away from Mitzrayim and towards the Plains of Moab.

Art Director Judith Hankin of Eugene, OR
Music Director Lorne Mallin of Vancouver, B.C.
Hear Kallah’s wonderful intergenerational "AWAYS ROOM FOR MORE
CHOIR!” Kids and adults together have been practicing all week..join

Sharings from the Wilderness:
Hear the voices of our teens who just spent the week having a unique
experience in the wilderness (along with the pre-B’nai Mitzvah group
who joined them for one night). Witness the changes that these
young people have gone through and be inspired by the wisdom that
they will share. This is not just for parents! It is for everyone who
cares about and wants to support our young people.
Directly experience the Divine within ourselves and beyond. We’ll
connect with our own bodyheartmindspirit through the Kabbalistic
Tree of Life. Using guided visualization and self-directed movement,
we’ll open ourselves to experience Mekor HaHayyim (Hebrew for
Source of Life) and the 10 Sefirot/Energy Centers of the Tree of Life.

The link between food and social justice is rooted in our tradition,
which instructs us to share our tables with the hungry, and to care for
the widow, the orphan and the stranger. And in our tradition there are
also profound connections among agriculture, ecology, food justice
and our relationship with the Divine. In this session we delve into
source texts, chevruta, chant, and dialogue to explore food justice as a
sacred spiritual path.
Rav Kook wrote that "the soul is filled with letters which are infused
with the light of life, full of knowledge and will, full of spiritual seeking
and full existence." Tradition teaches that the Hebrew letters were
used to create heaven and earth, with each letter being a unique
channel connecting the Infinite with the finite, the soul with its
Source. Learn to access the energy of Creation by embodying the
letters of your soul through the spiritual practice of Otiyot Hayyot, a
form of body prayer and moving meditation that integrates body,
heart, mind, and soul.
A “kumsitz” of (mostly) meditative music for Shabbat. Come and
experience a deep sense of Shabbat menucha (rest) as we sing and
chant a variety of old and new Shabbat songs. Songsheets with
transliteration will be provided; no Hebrew knowledge or musical
experience is necessary (other than a love of singing). Come and find
your inner sense of “Shabliss” as we join our voices together in song.
Reb Kalanymous Kalman Shapira in his second book, Sefer Derech
HaMelech (Book of the Royal Path) brings a beautiful teaching on
holiness and the structure and meaning of creation. During the high
point of shabbos, we'll read and be reminded of his teaching that kedusha/holiness and the many ways we sense it in our lives is
the live wire -- connecting us to Eyn Sof, our eternal essence.
Sherril Gilbert/
Petrocelli 101
Dance has been an expression of praise and celebration forever.
Forming a circle is as contemporary as it is ancient. Jewish sacred
dance is a form of tefillah (prayer) using one's whole being-body,
heart, mind, and soul. Through the dance a vessel of holiness, peace
and joy is created. With simple steps and the singing of Hebrew and
English sacred melodies the dancers enter a realm in which bodies,
hearts and souls move with and are moved by the Divine Blessed One.
No dance experience is needed, only a desire to explore and share the
landscape of the heart.
Bask in the ease of Shabbat. InterPlay is a simple system of short
forms done for the joy of doing them: tell a 30 second story, do a one
hand dance, give a gibberish blessing, make silly faces. Come immerse
yourself in this active, creative approach to unlocking the wisdom that
YOU hold in your own body.
Study Jewish texts through the lens of teachings from world wisdom
traditions such as Taoism, Islam, Hopi, Christian, and Ecology. As the
world is a commentary on Torah and the Torah is a commentary on
the world, looking at our traditional texts in a beit midrash
environment through the lens of the wider world's wisdom traditions
is a doorway into a Judaism that is deeply ecumenical and universalist

Like Miriam wandering the desert with the Israelites, divining for

Feminists were and are diviners of thoughts, words, actions and
deeds. This book embraces many changes over 60 years including the
redefining of what feminism is and means to each generation that has
had the privilege of experiencing the evolution of Judaism through the
bold and brilliant excavations and reconstructions of feminist
theologians, scholars and everyday women. This book reflects the
ingenuity, grace, holy chutzpah and chesed that was and is Jewish
Feminism.
Jewish stories contain not only the wisdom of our people, but “story

use visualization, movement, and small group exercises to deepen our
experience of the healing power of story.
