Crown Him with Many Crowns.......................................................Text: Matthew Bridges 1851; Godfrey Thring 1874; alt
Tune: George J. Elvey, 1868
Crown him with many crowns, the Lamb upon his throne.
While heaven’s eternal anthem drowns all music but its own.
Awake, my soul, and sing of him who died to be,
Your Savior and your matchless King through all eternity.
Crown him the Lord of life, triumphant o’er the grave,
Who rose victorious from the strife for those he came to save.
His glories now we sing, who died and reigns on high,
He died eternal life to bring, and lives that death may die.
Crown him the Lord of peace, his kingdom is at hand
From pole to pole, let warfare cease, and Christ rule every land.
All hail, Redeemer, hail, for you have died for me.
Your praise shall never, never fail throughout eternity.
Litany............................................................................................. Louise Hulst, Associate Director of the Library, Emerita
Leader:
Dordt College community, we meet to acknowledge our covenant God—
sovereign, holy, and mercifully just—
and commission our graduates for work in his world.
All: His Word lights our path and gives us delight.
Leader:
By the word of his power he created the world,
then made male and female reflecting himself,
to worship, obey, and walk daily with him,
develop and preserve all his wonderful works.
All: The defiant he destroyed with their world corrupted,
preserved just Noah and Noah’s kin.
Leader:
He called out a people to make his own,
a model for worship, obedience, and life.
With them he made covenant for all of time,
the original family and those grafted in.
All: He led them from slavery to desert truth,
gave laws and redemption for all their sin.
Leader:
In tabernacle-making, he chose some for designing,
chose others for crafts and others for arts,
gave wisdom and skill to make what was needed,
aesthetically pleasing, masterfully formed.
All: The defiant and faithless he destroyed in his wrath;
the obedient he led to promised land.
Leader:
Through judge and prophet and king he led on,
as history unfolded his faithful care,
till Jesus the Christ, provided the sacrifice,
ushering in the kingdom of God.
All: Conquering death, he ascended on high,
sending his Spirit to give more grace,
leading more people to promised land.
Leader:
What do we learn as we follow God’s Spirit?
The gods of this world enslave and destroy;
the God of the universe frees and preserves us.
All:
What do we fear as we follow our king,
obeying his words and transforming his world?
Leader:
As God is our refuge, our strength, and our help,
we will not be afraid, though the earth gives way
and the mountains collapse in the heart of the sea.
All: The Lord almighty—he is with us.
The God of Jacob—he is our fortress.
“Be still and know that I am God;
I will be exalted in all the earth.”
Hymn ............................................................................................................................................................ (All stand and sing)
10,000 Reasons (Bless The Lord)................................................................................................... Jonas Myrin, Matt Redman
Chorus:
Bless the Lord O my soul
O my soul
Worship his holy name
Sing like never before
O my soul
I’ll worship your holy name
The sun comes up it’s a new day dawning
It’s time to sing your song again
Whatever may pass and whatever lies before me
Let me be singing when the evening comes
(Chorus)
You’re rich in love and you’re slow to anger
Your name is great and your heart is kind
For all your goodness I will keep on singing
Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find
(Chorus)
And on that day when my strength is failing
The end draws near and my time has come
Still my soul will sing your praise unending
Ten thousand years and then forevermore
(Chorus)
Address: “Building for the King”..........................................................................................................Dr. Erik Hoekstra
Exodus 31 (The Message)
God spoke to Moses: “See what I’ve done; I’ve personally chosen Bezalel son of Uri, son of Hur of
the tribe of Judah. I’ve filled him with the Spirit of God, giving him skill and know-how and expertise
in every kind of craft to create designs and work in gold, silver, and bronze; to cut and set gemstones; to
carve wood—he’s an all-around craftsman.
1-5
“Not only that, but I’ve given him Oholiab, son of Ahisamach of the tribe of Dan, to work with him.
And to all who have an aptitude for crafts I’ve given the skills to make all the things I’ve commanded
you: the Tent of Meeting, the Chest of The Testimony and its Atonement-Cover, all the implements for
the Tent, the Table and its implements, the pure Lampstand and all its implements, the Altar of Incense,
the Altar of Whole-Burnt-Offering and all its implements, the Washbasin and its base, the official
vestments, the holy vestments for Aaron the priest and his sons in their priestly duties, the anointing oil,
and the aromatic incense for the Holy Place—they’ll make everything just the way I’ve commanded you.”
6-11
Exodus 36 (The Message)
Moses summoned Bezalel and Oholiab along with all whom God had gifted with the ability to work
skillfully with their hands. The men were eager to get started and engage in the work. They took from Moses
all the offerings that the Israelites had brought for the work of constructing the Sanctuary. The people kept
on bringing in their freewill offerings, morning after morning.
2-3
All the artisans who were at work making everything involved in constructing the Sanctuary came, one
after another, to Moses, saying, “The people are bringing more than enough for doing this work that God
has commanded us to do!”
4-5
6-7
So Moses sent out orders through the camp: “Men! Women! No more offerings for the building of the
Sanctuary!” The people were ordered to stop bringing offerings! There was plenty of material for all the work
to be done. Enough and more than enough.
Hymn ............................................................................................................................................................ (All stand and sing)
O Worship The King................................................................................................................................................Chris Tomlin
attr. Robert Grant, 1833; attr. Johann Michael Haydn
O worship the King, all glorious above,
O gratefully sing his power and his love;
Our Shield and Defender, the Ancient of Days,
Pavilioned in splendor, and girded with praise.
O tell of his might, and sing of his grace,
Whose robe is the light, whose canopy space,
His chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form,
And dark is his path on the wings of the storm.
Chorus:
You alone are the matchless King
To you alone be all majesty
Your glories and wonders
What tongue can recite
You breathe in the air
You shine in the light
Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail,
In you do we trust, nor find you to fail;
Your mercies how tender, how firm to the end,
Our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend.
O measureless might! Unchangeable love!
Whom angels delight to worship above,
Your ransomed creation with glory ablaze
In true adoration shall sing to your praise.
(Chorus)

Choral Anthem ............................................................................................................................. Dordt College Concert Choir
Praise to the Lord...............................................................German Chorale (1668), arr. F. Melius Christiansen (1871-1955)
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!
O my soul, praise him, for he is thy health and salvation!
All ye who hear, now to his temple draw near,
Join me in glad adoration.
Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee;
Surely his goodness and mercy here daily attend thee;
Ponder anew what the Almighty can do
If with his love he befriend thee!
Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him!
All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before him!
Let the Amen sound from his people again;
Gladly for aye we adore him! – Joachim Neander (1650-1680), tr. Catherine Winkworth

Dordt College Alma Mater (All stand and sing)........................................................................... Dale Grotenhuis (1931-2012)
Respond all loyal hearts to Dordt; our Christian college we acclaim.
From near and far our ranks consort, united by our Savior’s name.
Then swell our voices with our throng, in ardent, youthful jubilee.
And find with friends a Christian joy in camaraderie.
Rejoice and lift our colors high; we sing our Alma Mater’s praise;
set skies resounding with our cry, for God has sent abundant days.
Then swell our voices with our throng, in ardent, youthful jubilee.
And find with friends a Christian joy in camaraderie. – Merle Meeter (1933-2008)

God go before you to guide you.
God go behind you to protect you.
God go beneath you to support you.
God go beside you to befriend you.
Be not afraid.
And let the blessing of Almighty God,
The Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
Descend upon you, settle in around you, and make its home in you.
Be not afraid.
Go in peace.

The Dordt College Mace
In academia, the mace has become a symbol of protection and of the academic quest for truth and wisdom. It is
traditionally displayed in processions to symbolize academic authority and the unity and aspirations of the collegial
community.
The Dordt College mace, carried by the academic marshal, was designed in 1996 by Professor of Art Jacob Van
Wyk. It is fashioned from fired porcelain colored with stains of Delft blue, purple, and mauve, finished with a high
gloss glaze with gold luster trim. A crown of three flames joined at the apex symbolizes the trinity. A bronze replica of
the Dordt College seal with its motto, Soli Deo Gloria, is embedded in each of the three arches formed by the flames.
Designed to signify a shepherd’s staff, the five-foot mace is longer than the traditional model. Its shaft is formed from
faceted and turned walnut with porcelain rings at regular intervals. Huguenot crosses, descending doves, and the
flame motif embellish the cylinder. The wooden portions of the mace and its stand were crafted of native Iowa woods
by alumnus and Master Woodworker Gregg Hooyer (’84).
About the Litany Leader
Mrs. Louise Hulst, associate director of the library, emerita, served at Dordt College from 1968 to 1992. Mrs.
Hulst received her bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Calvin College and her master’s in library science from the
University of South Dakota. During her tenure at Dordt College, Mrs. Hulst served in various roles in the library,
as well as being the spouse of Dr. John Hulst, the college’s second president from 1982 to 1996. In thankfulness
to God for Louise’s service with John to the college, the library was named The John and Louise Hulst Library in
2002. Following their emeritation, John and Louise moved to Pella, Iowa, and remained active in their church, along
with continuing their long-standing work for the Association for Public Justice (APJ), the International Association
for the Promotion of Christian Higher Education (IAPCHE), and other Christian organizations. John’s illness and
subsequent passing in February 2013 has not dampened her involvement or enthusiasm for Dordt College. Louise is
the grandmother of two graduates today, Brian and Alena (Schuessler) De Young.
About the Speaker
Dr. Erik Hoekstra is the fourth president of Dordt College. Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Dr. Hoekstra
received his bachelor’s degree in history and philosophy from Trinity Christian College, his master of business
administration degree in international management from The Rotterdam School of Management of Erasmus
University in the Netherlands, and his Ph.D. in organizational learning and human resource development from
Iowa State University.
Dr. Hoekstra’s personal mission statement is “Growing People and Growing Organizations to Glorify God and
Grow the Kingdom.” His background is entrepreneurial—whether in the business world or the not-for-profit sectors.
Prior to being appointed president of Dordt College, Dr. Hoekstra was involved in leadership development,
executive coaching, organizational consulting, industrial construction, wholesale distribution, and retail management,
as well as teaching business courses at Dordt College. Most recently, he served as provost at Dordt College. As an
outgrowth of these experiences, he has co-authored publications on coaching, delegation, servant leadership, and
change management.
Dr. Hoekstra is passionate about bringing joy and meaning to work, striving to create environments where those
who are being led are being served and where people are able to fulfill their callings and reach their potential for
God’s glory.
Dr. Hoekstra is married to Dr. Barb Hoekstra, an education professor at Dordt College and speaker for Dordt’s
Commencement in 2010. Their family is a blend of biological and adopted children and includes Arie, 17; Max, 16;
Karl, 16; and Zoe, 13.
Dordt College Banners
Through color, symbol, and graphic art, these banners, most of which were created for Dordt College
by former art professor Norman Matheis, portray the rich diversity of our academic community.
Business Administration
Communication
In business, the stewardly use of
technology can transform our time,
talents, and financial and natural
resources into products that serve God
and our fellow humans.
To know God, ourselves, and the world
God created, people need to communicate
truthfully. Communication includes the
motion of a hand and a few quiet words
across a dinner table, video conferencing
and social media, and the transmission of
a television program to millions of people.
Theology
Mathematics
In theology we try to learn and
understand God’s will for our faith
lives. The circle, the dove, and the cross,
symbols for the Triune God, reflect our
human interactions with our Creator. The
arches represent our expressions of faith.
Abstract mathematical symbols are
human inventions for concisely expressing
complex quantitative and spatial
relationships. Such symbols help clarify
mathematical concepts, allowing people to
act as agents of renewal in God’s world.
Music
Theater Arts
The lines of this musical banner depict
the rhythm of musical sounds. The shapes
suggest various instruments, including the
human voice, that are used to glorify God.
Theater demonstrates how joys and
sorrows, strengths and weaknesses are
part of our continuous struggle to live
according to God’s will.
Health and Human
Performance
History
The rhythmical lines in this banner
suggest the human body in motion. As
temples of the Holy Spirit, we must keep
our bodies in a condition that allows us to
use them for God’s glory.
Christ’s sacrifice on the cross is the focal
point of history. The past helps us discover
how God’s will has been carried out and
helps us understand the kingdoms and
nations that have emerged in all corners
of the earth. In that context, as God’s
servants and representatives, we look
forward to the future.
Art and Design
Psychology
All human creatures are called to respond
aesthetically to God’s creation and to
respect and encourage the use of the
imaginative efforts of our fellow men and
women.
Human beings are the crown of God’s
creation. Individually and collectively, we
attempt to unravel the mystery of selfhood
and how we function as creatures made in
God’s image.
Philosophy
Political Science
As we search for the meaning of reality,
the structures of society, and the dynamics
of history, we gain true understanding of
ourselves and our world through God’s
Word and in the light of his Spirit.
The trumpet of God calls all states, their
peoples, and their institutions to live
according to the norms of justice and
righteousness. Political science helps
citizens and the state promote justice.
Education
Biology
The learning process involves the whole
person and must rest on God’s Word as a
guide with the inspiration and leading of
his Holy Spirit.
Biology studies the living organisms
created and sustained by our covenant
God. What we learn enables us to care for
these millions of beautiful creations whose
DNA and protein make possible the flow
of energy from the sun through the food
chain.
English
Chemistry, Physics,
Planetary Science
English language and literature link us
with many other languages and cultures,
offering richly varied ways to express
ourselves clearly and beautifully in
our understanding of God’s order and
purpose in creation.
God reveals himself through his Word
and his works. In chemistry, physics, and
planetary science we study physical aspects
of his handiwork, ranging from subatomic
particles and molecules to the vastness of
the cosmos.
Social Work
Language Studies
We are not simply individuals, but we
are part of a kingdom with societal
organizations and communal obligations.
Social work helps us understand the
interrelation of the one and many in the
world in which God has placed us.
Babel dispersed people into separate
communities; Pentecost brings us together
through the gospel. All nations, peoples,
and tongues have one great story to tell
and one Name to praise.
Dordt College Nursing Department Banner Project
Agriculture
As caretakers of creation, agriculture helps
us learn how to use God’s creation to
produce food and fiber in a stewardly way
for the well-being of humanity.
Engineering
In engineering, we use the gifts and
resources God has given us in creation
to solve the problems of man in a
responsible, stewardly, and God-glorifying
manner. The banner represents man,
guided by the Holy Spirit, interacting with
creation.
