The Volunteers of Omega House
“It’s Our
Omega House”
We hope that you
feel inspired to continue to support this
work and share in
our joy of service.
As supporters we can all proudly say “It’s Our
Omega House!” Omega House is owned and operated by our community and belongs to everyone who
believes in and supports its mission. We have much
to be thankful for in our ninth year of service as the
first hospice house in the Upper Peninsula.
As I enter my final year as president of the Omega
House board of directors, I am grateful for the support of the many individuals, businesses, organizations and churches whose gifts help keep our doors
open and make it possible to provide care to anyone
in need . I am grateful for the many dedicated volunteers and staff members whose daily acts of kindness provide comfort to our residents. I am grateful
for our community hospice programs and their staff
who are an integral part of the care team at Omega
House on a daily basis.
As I age, I feel a sharpening of my sense of what
is truly important. Each of us has a limited time on

earth. Very few of us know for certain where we will
receive care and who will care for us when we are
near the end of our life. As a community, and as supporters of Omega House, we can take solace there is
an option, available and affordable, right here in the
Copper Country to meet our needs and the needs of
our family members and friends at this vulnerable
and sacred time of life.
Thank you for your support,
Michael Abbott
President
Our Mission
Omega House provides a residential, homelike environment where terminally ill people may live
fully during their final days, free from pain and isolation and supported physically, emotionally
and spiritually by professional and volunteer caregivers, along with family and friends.

Byron Muljo: Man of Keweenaw County —
As remembered by his family
Byron Muljo spent his life hunting
the forests of Keweenaw County.
Byron and his wife Kathy maintained
a home both in Mohawk, and
a “camp” in Wyoming on the
Montreal River near Lac Labelle. Byron worked where he
lived, serving as a Keweenaw
County Deputy Sheriff before
moving to the Keweenaw
County Road Commission
where he worked for 32 years.
He was a plow driver and later
became Sign Foreman, then
Maintenance Foreman. Byron
also served as a Road Commissioner after his retirement.
His knowledge and love of the
Keweenaw are evidenced in
the many signs he created in
Keweenaw County including
the “Snow Gauge” north of Mohawk,
the Keweenaw County visitors map
north of Allouez, and “The Beginning
of US-41” sign near Copper Harbor.
These signs are known by local residents and visitors alike. In the summer of 2011, Byron was chosen as an
Honoree for the Mohawk Sesquicentennial celebration, for his work and
dedication to the county.
The compassionate care provided
to residents near
the end of life allows them to live
each day to the
fullest as comfortable as possible. I
am so pleased to
play a part in this
humane effort.

Kathy remembers, “He was such a
kind and honest man. He always believed in doing the right thing, and he
Byron and Kaci
was always ready to help others. His
favorite pastime was sitting by the
banks of the Montreal River with a
bonfire going, listening to Elmer
Aho’s Country Gold radio show on
Saturday nights, and just watching the
river go by. Byron appreciated a
slower pace of life. His favorite saying was, “Remember the 11th Commandment — Thou shalt not panic.”
He loved the outdoors and looked
forward to the annual Kid’s fishing
tournament put on
by the Lac La
Belle
Lodge,
where he and others enjoyed the opportunity to take
kids out on boats
fishing.
Robert Daavettila
Board Member
In the late summer of 2011 he
took a group of 8
children fishing on Lac La Belle with
another adult. When they got back to
the marina he fell while trying to get
off of the boat. A few days
later, tests at the local hospital
showed that the lung cancer
we thought was in remission
had come back, and it had
spread to his brain and liver.
With the help of family and
many good friends, among
them Kim and Gary Bracco,
we managed for a while at
home. As his condition progressed, however, he became
increasingly weaker and was
admitted to the hospital again.
When his strength did not
improve sufficiently for him to
be discharged home, the Aspirus Keweenaw doctors and
staff recommended that Byron go to
Omega House.
Both the care and physical environment at Omega House surpassed
anything we had imagined. Our
concerns and fears were immediately
put to rest. We both felt supported by
the staff, volunteers and hospice
workers. It felt like home away from
home, not like a facility or institution
at all. With all the good care, the
home-made meals, and encouragement, his strength and mobility
steadily improved. We were thrilled
that after a few weeks he was able to
return home again in late October.
Deer season had been a highlight of
the year for Byron since he was young.
Deer hunting and being with his buddies at deer camp was something that
brought him a lot of happiness. He
was fortunate enough to “bag” two
bucks the previous deer season, earnOmega House 2013 Annual Report

we could have been during that time
of his life that would have met his
needs, and the needs of our family, like
Omega House did.
ing him Hunter of the Year honors in
2010 for the Keweenaw Camp Classic. He and I knew that this would be
his last deer season. Even though he
was quite weak and couldn’t walk on
his own, our good friends Tim Hoeft
and Joe Langdon took him hunting
on opening day near our camp by Lac
Labelle. While he didn’t get a deer, he
was thrilled to go out with Tim and
Joe on opening day and be part of deer
camp with his buddies.
That was Byron’s last time outside
in the wilds of the Keweenaw that he
loved so much. Within a few days
after that he chose to go back to
Omega House.
He said to me, “Kathy, it is getting
too hard on you taking care of me.
For your sake I want you to take me
back to Omega House.” It was such a
relief knowing Omega House was
there for us. It was like returning to a
home away from home. I put a cot in
the room so that I could stay there
with Byron. Our daughter, Julie, and
son-in-law Scot also spent nights
there with Byron. We all wanted to
spend as much time with him as we
could. The apple of his eye, Kaci, his
then six-year old granddaughter, could
Omega House 2013 Annual Report
visit him at any time as visitors are not
restricted. This brought him a lot of
joy in his final days.
He always enjoyed feeding birds and
deer at home and our camp. When
Mary, the House Manager, encouraged us to make his room as much like
home as we wanted to, we set up bird
feeders outside his window. We
brought bird and deer feed. While
lying in his bed he could watch the
deer feed and birds eat right outside
of his window. We were also encouraged to bring Byron’s deer mounts
from the previous year to hang on the
All the staff and volunteers were
considerate and caring people but he
had a special connection with Mary
Knight. He would call her “My
Florence Nightingale.” She would
make coffee for him and sit by his
bedside whenever she could if we were
not there. This gave him a feeling of
comfort and peace. It also brought me
comfort knowing someone who cared
about us, and understood what we
were going through, was there for
Byron when our family was not
present.
His passing was very peaceful. Although he was not able to communicate directly with us for a few days, I
believe he knew we were there with
him. I was holding one hand and our
daughter, Julie, was holding his other
hand. A long-time friend and hospice
nurse, Jean Laurie, came to Omega
House at just the right time. It gives
me comfort that he took his last
breathe with those that loved him
right by his side. ■

am humbled by the generosity of so
many in our community. It’s
heart-warming that our friends
and neighbors show such a level of
support for Omega House.”

Bob Peterson’s Final Mission —
As told by his children:Terry, Michael, Barbara and Nancy
Most people knew our father, Bob Peterson, as an honorable, selfless, and compassionate man who loved God,
his family and his country. Our dad had a gift for putting
people at ease and making them feel special. He always
put the needs of others ahead of his own. Perhaps the
greatest example of this was his devotion to his wife and
our mother, Rita.
Our mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease at
the age of 75. It became our dad’s
mission to care for her for the rest
of her life. Caring for a person
with Alzheimer’s disease is physically, emotionally, and financially
challenging, yet our dad did it with
love, compassion, and empathy.
For ten years at home, followed by
five years in a local nursing home,
our dad tended to our mom with
affection day and night. Because
he never wanted to leave her, he
missed significant events including
the Honor Flight and numerous
family weddings.
As a WWII Veteran, our dad
saw VA doctors in Iron Mountain every year. At his annual check-up in 2012, they found a spot on his lung
which turned out to be an aggressive form of cancer. Our
dad, who persevered through adversity early in life and
as a prisoner of war, chose to have intensive chemotherapy and radiation treatments at the VA in Iron Mountain. Although this option separated him from our
mother, he hoped it would prolong his life so he could
complete his mission. Unfortunately, the treatments made him gravely
ill and had to be stopped.
Although the kindly VA
staff was providing him
with exceptional palliative care, our dad really
missed our mother.
Since there was no way
to accommodate a spouse
that needed 24 hour care
at the VA, the certified
hospice and palliative
care nurse, Selena Okler,
suggested that our dad
could get the same care
Page 4
close to his home at Omega House. With that news,
Terry arranged to have our mom transferred to Omega
House too.
The thought of being with his beloved wife again
made our dad very happy. The next day, he moved into
room 7 at Omega House and our mom moved into room
5. When their doors were left open, dad could see mom
from his bed and “keep an eye on her.” He loved that.
Every day the staff would put our
mother in her wheelchair and take
her to our dad’s room. Dad held
and caressed her hand and he
couldn’t have been happier. He
knew she was nearing the end of
her life and he knew that he was
too. He prayed that the Good
Lord would take her first and that
she would not suffer.
When our mom was in her final
days, she was too weak to leave her
bed, and our dad was as well.
Nancy, Michael and his wife
Diane came from their homes in
Southeast Michigan to say their
goodbyes. Barbara, and our mom’s sister, Ethel, were at
our mother’s bedside, along with Sister Ellen and
Stephanie, an Omega House aide. Barbara took our
mother’s hand and said, “Mom, it’s okay, you can go now.
The angels are waiting for you.” Our mother then took
her last breath.
It was very peaceful. Terry arrived just after our mother
died. She told our dad that
mom had passed away.
He cried, but also took
comfort in knowing that
she hadn’t been alone.
An Omega House nurse,
Jane, put dad in his
wheelchair, so he could
say goodbye to mom. He
touched her face and
stroked her hair gently
and told her to pray for
him. He closed her eyes
for the last time. Our
dad’s mission was now
complete, but God had
more plans for him.
Omega House 2013 Annual Report
Our dad was a huge sports fan and played sports all
his life. In addition to being the
quarterback for MTU when he
was in college, he was a life-long
golfer and he liked to boast that
he could beat players who were
decades younger than he was.
Even though our dad knew his
cancer was terminal, he accepted
it and he never gave up on life.
He loved playing euchre and cribbage and he was competitive even
in his final months. He enjoyed
watching sports on TV, but he always shut it off when visitors came to see him at the
Omega House.
Our dad had a unique effect on people. He touched many with his compassion and sense of humility. His
visitors encompassed people of all ages
and from all walks of life. They listened to his captivating stories and
words of wisdom, yet he would easily
find a way to engage them in talking
about themselves, and this made them
feel special. At times there were up to
35 guests in his room and our dad was
always concerned about their comfort.
The staff at Omega House happily accommodated his many visitors. They
also joked that the carpeting would
need to be replaced from the steady
stream of visitors to see Bob in Room
7. Dad also enjoyed visiting other
WWII veterans who lived at Omega
House and he seemed happy that their
paths had crossed so late in life.
Sadly, our dad passed away peacefully six months after
our mother died. Neil Ahola was very kind and sensitive
in helping us make the proper burial arrangements. Be-

cause of our dad’s status as a Purple Heart recipient and
a former POW, both he and our
mother were eligible to be buried
at Arlington National Cemetery.
Our mom was cremated and her
ashes were placed in an urn cradled
in our Dad’s arm in his casket.
Neil offered to drive their remains
to Arlington, Virginia, where they
were buried with full military honors on May 30th, 2013.
Omega House provided our
family with a unique opportunity
for our parents to be together in their final days. They received exceptional hospice and palliative care in a setting
that really helped meet the needs of our family and
friends. We are indebted to the marvelous staff and many volunteers of
Omega House and also to the staff of
Aspirus Keweenaw Home Health and
Hospice for the care of our parents. It’s
wonderful that the people in this community have access to the extraordinary
care at Omega House. Our parents’
final days on earth would not have been
the same at any other place. ■

Healing from Loss: A personal journey —
Raymond Weglarz, RN, Director of Community and Donor Relations
Theologians and scientists agree that in the physical
realm, everything is impermanent and constantly
changing. We may go for years without experiencing
a significant loss to remind us of the reality of impermanence and suddenly,
our world changes.
Someone dear to us is
diagnosed with a terminal illness or, someone we love dies
unexpectedly.
A
decade ago a series of
events occurred in my
life that shook me
deeply as I experienced
a period of great
change, and deep loss.
to Montana during that same period of time. Over the
years, we had been avid fly fishing buddies. After they
left the area, some of the joy was gone for me when I
fished those rivers and lakes that we once had fished
together. Often, visiting
those places
brought a melancholy
that masked the joy
that we had shared, as
friends.
With this background in my personal
life, a series of deaths
shook the very foundation of our family.
My niece Ann’s husVirginia Weglarz as a young woman

feel whole again? We had suffered much change in
the family, and so many deaths in a very short time.”
My brother Gary and friend Mike, who were also
close friends, moved away from the Upper Peninsula
Often, when wondering how I could cope, I would
simply pray for grace and for the courage to endure the
obstacles that had been placed before me. An inner
question constantly arose within myself, “What good
can possibly come from all this loss and change?
“Each one of us has
the capacity to
offer our presence
and our
compassion to
someone grieving.”
When we suffer great loss, we can no longer pretend
that everything is permanent. We have a heightened
sense of the fragility of life and we will acknowledge
the preciousness of the smallest of things. We may be
more inclined to take every opportunity to say “I love

you” to those we love. We can
make it a daily practice to count
our blessings. And most of all, with
grace and gratitude, we can accept
ourselves and the grief that we feel.
We can learn to say to ourselves in
the midst of that grief, “this too
shall pass.” Impermanence, too,
holds a gift; even our darkest moments of pain and loss will, in time,
transform and change.
I readily recall the turning point
in my healing. In a quiet moment
at work, a fellow hospice team
member asked if I had a moment
to talk. She asked how I was feeling and invited me to tell her about
the losses in my family. She then
listened to my story. She never interrupted while I spoke and she
didn’t act uncomfortable in the
presence of my grief. Never did she
offer any answers or repeat any
stale grief slogans. Even so, this
small act of kindness was healing
and of great comfort to me. Slowly,
overtime, the “weight” of my grief
gradually began to lift.
One insight, during this tremulous period, was how uncomfortable my grief made many people
feel. Even those whom I knew
well, seemed to be affected. It was
like an unseen grief detection radar
was at work. I often felt that peoEach one of us, knows someone,

Cyndy Quello: 2013 Volunteer of the Year —
Cyndy began volunteering in the fall of 2011 and has
become a dedicated volunteer wearing many different hats
at Omega House. She averages two to three volunteer
shifts per week and logged 300 hours in 2013. Mary Herlevich shares, “She is very flexible and willing to come in
when extra help is needed and will do just about anything.
She runs special errands for the house, prepares meals and
feeds residents who need assistance, helps prepare many of
our mailings and helps train new volunteers.”
Cyndy lives in Hancock with her husband Gerard and is
a member of the St. Ignatius Church. She is modest about
her volunteer service and award. “Now that I am retired I
feel good that I can give back to the community and those
in need. When I am at Omega House I feel like I am
home.” ■

Why do I volunteer? The answer is simple.
Of course it has to do with a desire to serve,
but more than that, it's a commitment to a
cause. That cause for me is hospice care. I
have seen first hand how helpful hospice
care is for the patient and family. When
care can't be provided at home, then Omega
House is the next best thing to home. I am
proud to continue to be associated with this
compassionate care.

Omega House allows the families of
terminally ill patients to continue to live
their lives. Often the biggest concern of the
patient isn't their condition. They don't
want to disrupt the lives of their loved
ones. At the same time the family can rest
assured that their loved one is being cared
for in the best possible manner. The family
can visit their family member and not have
to worry about the daily rituals of caring
for a very ill person.

A Celebration of
Carol Pfefferkorn
Outreach &
Events Coordinator
I came to Omega House
after personal involvement in
hospice and palliative care. My
experience was on one level.
Here, I have been able to
watch care giving on many
levels, from the volunteers and
nursing staff who tend to the
needs of residents, to spiritual
caregivers who listen to concerns, to administrative staff
who remind me of the everyday
practicalities
of
running
Omega House. The events we plan for the House help
raise money; but more important, they encourage a sense
of community with people who come together in a spirit
of joy and compassion.
Throughout 2013, Omega House has sponsored
events that help promote our mission, while reminding
everyone in the community that balance in life involves
fun. We wish to thank the following organizations and
individuals who contributed to Events as Major
Sponsors.

of a traditional wedding registry they created a “Just Give Wedding Registry” using the “I Do Foundation” tools on

House rather than making gifts to the wedding couple.

Last fall
Omega House became registered allowing on-line shoppers to support us in a new way

logging into Amazon Smile, select Omega House as your

Mary Herlevich, House Manager, made the switch to
Amazon Smile this past fall. “When I can’t find it locally
I shop on line. While ½% may seem like a small amount,
it’s easy to do and it all adds up. The more people shop
at Amazon Smile and select Omega House the more

How Can I Give to Omega House
Annual Gifts
Gifts-in-Kind
Annual donations to Omega House support the daily
operations of the House. These gifts are essential for
us to fulfill our mission. Annual gifts can be designated
in memory or in honor of a friend, loved one or someone important in your life. Please consider becoming a
Sustaining Donor with on-going donations via a credit
or debit card. We bill in a safe and secure manner at
the amount and interval that you direct us to. Contact
Mary at Omega House for more information.
[email protected]
There are many non-monetary contributions of products and services that you can gift Omega House that
support the daily operations of the House. Our on-going
Wish List is updated regularly and includes items such
as postage stamps, gift cards to areas stores as well as
kitchen and bathroom items needed at the house. Please
see the list at the end of the annual report.
Founders Fund
The Keweenaw Community Foundation (KCF) manages a designated endowment fund for the benefit of the
Omega House. The perpetual fund was established in
2005 to support the operations and programs of the
Omega House. For more information or to donate contact KCF at 906-482-9673, [email protected] or online
at www.k-c-f.org. You can also contact your financial
advisor for planned giving options to this fund and make
it a gift For good, For ever!
The Founders Fund recognizes individuals who make
donations at the $25,000 level. These gifts are payable
over a period of one to three years. A gift of this level
provides resources to operate the entire house for a
month. It helps ensure that no one will be turned away.
The Founders Fund is named for the early organizers
who helped make the vision of Omega House a reality.
Veterans Fund
Since opening our doors, U.S. military veterans have
made up to approximately 30% of all residents. We are
honored to serve these residents. You can recognize a
veteran, a branch of service or a veterans group with
your gift.
Naming Opportunities
Omega House has naming opportunities available for
donations small and large. This is a unique way to forever honor or remember a loved one. For gifts of $1000
an etched glass panel commemorative wall has been
created that greets visitors as they enter the house.
Events
Events are held in the community throughout the year
to benefit the house. Some events are planned and conducted by Omega House staff, volunteers and board
members. Other events are planned and conducted by
individuals and organizations in the community on behalf of Omega House. Please consider becoming a
sponsor for an annual Omega House event or hosting
an event of your own. See the Events section of this
Annual Report to identify ways that you can support
Omega House.

Omega House Legacy Society
You can become a member of the Omega House Legacy Society, and leave a legacy of compassion, by including Omega
House in your will or estate planning. A Legacy Gift to Omega House may provide tax advantages for you and your
heirs, and we encourage you to consult with your tax advisor, attorney, or financial planner if you are interested in making such gifts. The options listed below give you flexibility, control and the enjoyment of your assets until your death.
Your Legacy Gift to Omega House can be recognized, or you may remain anonymous. Please call if you would like
more information about the Legacy Society or planned gifts to Omega House.
Bequest
A bequest allows you to support Omega House in the
future without giving away your assets during your lifetime. You can make a bequest donation in your will or
living trust by designating Omega House as the beneficiary of cash, real estate, securities or by leaving us a
percentage of your estate after all other obligations
have been fulfilled. A bequest remains revocable until
your death, allowing you to change your mind at any
time. If you have chosen to include Omega House in
your will or trust please let us know.
Beneficiary Designation
This is the simplest way to leave a Legacy Gift to
Omega House. You can name Omega House as the
beneficiary of an investment or brokerage account by
using a Transfer On Death, “TOD.” Some assets like
retirement plans, life insurance policies and annuities
are not distributed as part of your will or trust, as the
beneficiaries are determined by your list of individuals
or charities on the “beneficiary designation form” provided by your account administrator. You can request
an update to your designation form at any time and
simply name Omega House as the full beneficiary or
partial beneficiary of your plans assets. You may change
your mind at any time prior to your death. Consult a
tax advisor or attorney before making such a gift.
Retained Life Estate
This gift allows you to enjoy and control your home,
camp or cottage and transfer ownership to Omega
House upon your death. It saves you or your heirs the
hassles associated with selling real estate, avoids probate, and may even provide tax advantages. This gift
will not impact your property taxes, as the principal residence exemption will be unaffected, and the taxes on
your property will not be “uncapped.” This gift can also
be changed or revoked if your circumstances and needs
change. Gifts of real estate must be approved by the
Omega House 2013 Annual Report
Planned Giving Advisory Council prior to acceptance
by Omega House, so please contact us if you are considering a gift of real estate.
Contingent Gifts
“Contingent Gifts” are recommended by many estate
and financial planners. These gifts serve as a contingency plan should something unforeseen happen to
your primary beneficiaries. The gift is effective only if
your primary wishes are not possible. Contingent gifts
can be made by a will, trust or a beneficiary designation
on life insurance, investment account or a retirement
account, such as an IRA.
Complex Gifts
There are several gift options that are more complex
than those listed. These gifts include: Charitable Remainder Trusts, Charitable Lead Trusts and Charitable
Gift Annuities. These gifts can provide current tax advantages for you and future benefits for your heirs but
do require the assistance of an estate or financial planner experienced in these matters.
Omega House Planned
Giving Advisory Council
The Planned Giving Advisory Council is comprised of community volunteers who serve in an advisory capacity to the
board of directors in areas related to their knowledge and
experience.

Since 2005, Omega House has provided care to over 340 people. The only qualification for
eligibility to Omega House is to be in a hospice program or qualify for hospice care. The diagnosis
can be related to any life-threatening illness: stroke, heart failure, kidney failure, degenerative diseases
and cancer, to name only a few. Omega House is for those individuals who need additional care that
prevents them from residing in their own homes. Residents are supported physically, emotionally
and spiritually, while maintaining their independence, dignity and respect.
