FROM THE RABBI
Steven C. Kane
Perhaps the most fascinating phenomena in modern Jewish life is the growth of Chabad throughout
the world. (If you have not yet read Joseph Telushkin's book "Rebbe," I encourage you to do so, as it
gives a fascinating if somewhat biased account of
the last, and perhaps final, Chabad Rebbe, Menachem Mendel Schneerson.) What is most interesting about Chabad is that most people who are
involved in their synagogues and communities do
not observe Judaism as they do, nor do they accept
some of their most basic beliefs (for example, they
believe that the world is only 5775 years old, they
do not believe in evolution and do not give women
the same ritual rights, such as reading Torah or being counted in a minyan as men).
When I first came to CSI 22 years ago, there was no
Chabad presence in Briarcliff. There were occasional attempts by a few different rabbis to organize a
class or two, but they did not prove to be successful. Then, about 12 years ago Rabbi Dovid Labkowsky moved into the area, attempting to provide a
more permanent presence for Chabad. Most of my
colleagues, whether Reform, Conservative or
Orthodox, do not get along well with their local
Chabad rabbi. One major reason is that often when
Chabad "sets up shop," although they claim to be
interested in attracting only those who are unaffiliated, the reality is that they also will approach people who are already committed members of a synagogue, sometimes weakening existing institutions.
Briarcliff-Ossining, felt that they and their rabbi deserved the same kind of welcome. Rabbi Labkowsky will tell you that most of his Chabad colleagues
do not receive this same kind of respect and good
relations with the rabbis in their communities. We
have on occasion officiated at funerals together,
and he has come by CSI on Shabbat to wish a mazal
tov to members celebrating a Bar/t Mitzvah
(including my children) and recently at my invitation came to sit in (and add to) my class on "The
Rebbe." This is how, it seems to me, a Jewish community ought to function.
Since I have been saying kaddish for my mother, we
have broken new ground in this relationship. As is
traditional, I try to say kaddish for her three times a
day. Since I don't travel on Shabbat and CSI has no
regular Shabbat afternoon service (one is supposed
to recite kaddish only with a minyan), I was not
sure what to do about reciting kaddish Shabbat
afternoons. I then approached Rabbi Labkowsky
with an idea. He too had no Shabbat afternoon
minyan, so I asked if he was interested in making a
minyan together with members of CSI and Chabad.
I knew that separately neither of us could get the
10 required for a weekly commitment, but perhaps
together we could. Of course, there would have to
be compromises on our part in following their customs, but if we could supply some people and he
could too, perhaps we could make it work. I am
pleased to tell you that each week we have gathered together to make what I believe is the only
combined Conservative-Chabad minyan in existence! While I will never become a follower or believer in Chabad, and I can assure you that Rabbi
Labkowsky will not begin to look at Judaism
through the eyes of the Conservative movement,
together I think we have shown that as Jews, even
when there is much that divides us, there is even
more that can unite us.
I decided that having such an attitude towards another synagogue or rabbi was not in anyone's best
interest. Already, some 18 years ago, I had fully
supported the creation of the Pleasantville Community Synagogue, knowing that we would lose both
present and future members to a new institution.
What was more important to me was that our area
of Northern Westchester continues to attract Jewish families, and having more synagogues would
only strengthen the entire Jewish community. I
L'hitraot,
have, since the establishment of the Chabad of

SOCIAL COMMITTEE
The CSl Social Committee Visits the
Museum of Jewish Heritage—May 3, 2015
The Social Committee worked diligently to
organize a comfy bus to take us to NYC, to
find a delicious restaurant in Chinatown
(kosher, of course), and to engage a docent
for the Museum of Jewish Heritage in Battery
Park. Unfortunately, we had not anticipated the NYC
bike tour that day. The impact was an extra hour wait
at the Bridge, but there was no loss of enthusiasm and
excitement for the day's activities. Even the weather
was beautiful, and that added to our enjoyment of the
day. While it was rough in the Museum when we
viewed the Holocaust material, the presentation was
most informative and tastefully done.
Look for our next memorable event to come in the
Fall!

CANTORIAL NOTES
Hazzan Jeffrey Shiovitz
This year marks the 50th
anniversary of what has
become, after “Hatikvah,”
perhaps the second Jewish
national anthem—Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach’s “Am
Yisrael Chai.”( “Y’rushalayim Shel Zahav” ranks up
there, too!) In 1965, Jacob Birnbaum, the founder of
the Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry, asked Carlebach to compose a song that could be sung by all at
the huge “Jericho March” from the Soviet Mission to
the United Nations. Two weeks before Pesach,
3,000 protestors led by seven men wearing Tallitot
encircled the Soviet Mission to “topple the walls of
hate” in Jericho style. They blew on seven shofarot
seven times. It was at the Dag Hammarskjold Plaza
that Shlomo taught the song and within minutes
people were singing it so loudly that their voices
were heard all over the area. In a short time, “Am
Yisrael Chai-The People of Israel Lives!” made its way
to the USSR, where young Jews defiantly sang it in
front of synagogues and in underground groups. It
was at this march that Shlomo Carlebach sang these
words for the first time.
The reactions to this tune were immediate. The
words were simple and easy to repeat. Even those
who did not know Hebrew were able to sing this
song. The message was an expression of pride, existence, continuity and solidarity. The song quickly
became the anthem of the entire Soviet Jewry movement and today is still a song of major importance.
Shlomo had not been shy about condemning the
Jewish establishment’s early silence on responding in
a meaningful way to the spiritual destruction of our
Russian brethren.
As if these three words were not enough, Shlomo
added three others “Od Avinu Chai”-Our Father still
lives-giving the song greater meaning. The phrase is
understood in its simple meaning that Jacob/Israel is
still alive and in its theological sense that God, the
father of Israel, exists and protects His people. The
musical notes reflect the juxtaposition of the two
themes.
In the 2010 book by Gal Beckman titled “When They
Come For Us We’ll Be Gone: The Epic Struggle To
Save Soviet Jewry,” the story of how Shlomo wrote
the song is explained further:
“The story of how he came to write the anthem of
the Soviet Jewry movement is infused with that
same spirit of Jewish awakening. On the flight from
Frankfurt to Prague in 1965, Carlebach decided to
open his mail. In the stack was a letter from Yaakov
Birnbaum. Shlomo had already appeared at a few
small SSSJ protests, events consisting mostly of a
handful of yeshiva boys loudly singing along to his
guitar. Birnbaum had an idea. He wondered if
Shlomo would consider writing a melody to accompany the ancient Jewish motto ‘Am Yisrael Chai.’
“As Carlebach was reading, he noticed the man next
to him peering over his shoulder. Realizing that the
stationery read ‘Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry,’
he quickly crumpled up the paper and went to the
bathroom to flush it down the toilet.”
At the conclusion of this trip, the author picks up
again on this episode.
Having been inspired during a Purim celebration by
these brave young Jews in the heart of the communist environment, Beckerman informs us of the
following response by Shlomo:
“When he was alone again, he felt so moved by the
transformation he had witnessed, that he grabbed
his guitar and began working on the task Birnbaum
had assigned him, a new ‘Am Yisrael Chai.’ He decided that one more phrase was needed, and he remembered the story of Joseph from the Bible. When
Joseph’s brothers discovered him in Egypt, where he
was a prosperous adviser to the pharoah, the first
thing Joseph said to them was, ‘Od avinu chai?’ (is
our father still alive?). Shlomo added the affirmative
answer to this — our father is alive — as a refrain,
and within minutes he had composed the song and
sung it into his tape recorder. His version had the
rhythm of an assertive battle cry, of a military chant;
each word was belted out slow and strong and then
repeated again and again. The people of Israel live.
He left Prague that night, and within a few weeks he
was in New York again, playing ‘Am Yisrael Chai’ for
the first time to a rapturous audience; their fists
pounded the air with so much enthusiasm, it seemed
to Shlomo that they themselves had pulled the song
out of him.”
In 1987, Robyn and I and our one year-old daughter,
Rachel, went to Washington to march with one million other Jews in support of Soviet Jewry. Shlomo

Carlebach led everyone in “Am Yisrael Chai.” I still
find this song thrilling and moving after all these
many years. Go online and watch Shlomo sing the
song as only he could:

GREET OLD FRIENDS/MEET NEW ONES!
Religious School Tzedakah and the Heh Class
Each Religious School class collects Tzedakah (charity) money. Our Heh class has the privilege of deciding
where it gets donated. This year, they have chosen the following charities:

Mazon: MAZON's advocacy works to ensure that hungry people have access to nutritious food today
and demands that government policies assure no one goes hungry tomorrow. www.mazon.org.

Friends of the Israel Defense Forces: FIDF initiates and helps support educational, social, cultural, and
recreational programs & facilities for the young men and women soldiers of Israel who defend the
Jewish homeland. FIDF also supports the families of fallen soldiers. www.fidf.org

Pass It On: Kid’s Kloset: Kid’s Kloset is a program of Westchester Jewish Community Services, providing gently used and new children’s clothes and essentials to Westchester families in need.

Project Ezra: Project Ezra is an independent, non-profit grass-roots organization serving the frail elderly
on New York's Lower East Side. They provide a variety of services to a largely homebound population. www.projectezra.org
“The Mitzvah of Tzedakah” is that we show compassion to people less fortunate than us
and God will have mercy on us. The highest form of tzedakah is to give anonymously. This
is also another way of doing Tikkun Olam (repairing the world).

FROM THE PRESIDENT
Jack H. Zinn
June – a forgotten month on the calendar. There
are no holidays on either the secular or the Jewish
calendar, not even a minor fast day. The next
event on the Jewish calendar is not until the 17th of
Tammuz, a half-day fast which is observed this
year on the 18th of Tammuz (July 5th) because the
17th falls on Shabbat this year. It commemorates
the breaching of the walls of Jerusalem prior to the
destruction of the First Temple, which we commemorate on the July 26th (Tisha B’Av). June,
however, can be pretty hectic, especially for those
of us with school-aged children. Final exams in
Middle and High School creep up pretty quickly.
End-of-year parties and other activities abound.
Camp is right around the corner, and we are out
shopping for shoes, rain gear, flashlights, and other
essentials. If you are gearing up for summer, June
can be a whirlwind.
At CSI we have two B’nai Mitzvah, several HaMishpachah events, a Rabbi’s Circle book review, Women’s Torah Study, Talmud classes, the Alef Class
Service/Family Night/Shabbat Rocks on June 5th, a
meeting of our new Second Generation Survivors
group, our Sisterhood’s End-of-Year Karaoke
Event, and our Annual Congregational Meeting on
June 23rd. June gets busy at CSI, even without any
holidays.
One of the best things about June is that it is followed by July and August! This is a Sabbatical Year
(“Shemitah”) in Israel, where many allow their
fields a chance to rest and rejuvenate. At CSI, our
members have this kind of pause every summer.
Many services are lay-led, dress is more casual,
and there is a lighter air about everyone. Friday
night services are joyful and filled with singing, as
they are throughout the year. If you haven’t come
to a Friday night service at CSI, the summer is a
good time to try one out, though I do recommend
them year-round. Shabbat morning services are a
relaxed time when you can come and meet some
of your fellow congregants, hear a friend deliver a
D’var Torah (a lesson about the week’s Torah reading), and enjoy a Kiddush lunch.
An unusual day at CSI is Tisha B’Av, the commemoration of the destruction of both Temples in Jerusalem and several other historical calamities. That
Saturday evening, July 25th, as Tisha B’Av begins,
we will read Eikhah, the Book of Lamentations, at
CSI. I still remember, from 38 years ago, sitting at
night in circles on the basketball court at Camp
Ramah and hearing the haunting melody of the
candlelight chanting of Eikhah. At CSI, we also sit
on the floor and read from Eikhah. Though it is the
saddest day on the Jewish calendar, it is tempered
by spending it with friends.
From the next day, however, we begin the weeks
of consolation that build toward the crescendo of
the High Holidays in mid-September. Before that
happens, invite some friends to join you and come
to CSI one or two more times in the coming
months.
Enjoy the summer!

2015 ANNUAL FUNDRAISER
CONTINUING THE VISION—BUILDING OUR FUTURE
Thank you to those congregants who graciously responded to the virtual fundraising appeal.
CSI has greatly benefited from your generosity. Our budgetary needs continue, and your support for the synagogue has helped maintain programs and attend to ongoing projects. The
success of the appeal shows that the spirit of CSI lives on!
A special thank you also to Ellen, Jolie and Doreen, all of whom worked very hard on short notice to organize
this fundraiser. As is often the case, their dedication and professionalism contribute greatly to our success.

JUNE B’NAI MITZVAH
June 6
June 13
Hi, my name is Skylar Kamen, and I will be called to
the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on June 6, 2015. I live in
Briarcliff Manor with my parents, Jenn and Stew, my
two brothers, Noah and Jonah, and my two dogs,
Daisy and Lulu.
I currently attend Briarcliff Middle School as a seventh grader. In the fall I played on the school’s modified soccer team, and now I play on the modified
Lacrosse team. Outside of school I also play on the
BMYL Lacrosse team and the WYSL travel soccer
team. On these teams I learn much more than just
the sport I am playing, I learn how to work together
as a team and help each other out. Through these
teams, I have created everlasting friendships with
people I can rely on.
My Bat Mitzvah project is visiting the Atria every Friday at four o’clock to help lead the Shabbat services.
The Atria is an assisted living home for the elderly.
This project means so much to me because every Friday I get to see their faces light up when we start the
services.
I am very excited to become a Bat Mitzvah. I have
been a part of CSI since I was three years old and
have waiting a long time for this day to come. It has
been a special journey, filled with lots of hard work,
incredible memories and life long friendships. I
would like to thank all of my Hebrew School teachers,
Rabbi Kane, Cantor Shiovitz and Roni Shapiro for preparing me for this special occasion. I would also like
to thank my mom, dad and brothers for all of their
support in helping me achieve this special day.
My name is Caleb Mitchell Levitt, and I am very excited to reach this major milestone in my life. I go to
Westlake Middle School and live in Thornwood, NY
with my parents. I am an only child. I participate in
Boy Scouts and hope to reach Eagle Scout. I enjoy
the backpacking and camping.
This year, I was on the cross country, winter track and
spring track teams at my school. I love to play baseball. I’m also in the engineering and robotics club. I
love to read and go traveling with my family. When I
was five, we took a family trip to Israel with CSI, and I
look forward to going back this December with my
family as part of my Bar Mitzvah celebration.
Last summer, I went to Ramah Outdoor Adventure
Camp in Colorado for two weeks. I enjoyed many activities such as horseback riding, mountain biking,
rock climbing, and a four-night backpacking trip. This
summer, I will go back again, maybe even for a
month!
For my mitzvah project, I volunteered at Cranberry
Nature Preserve. I cleaned out two sheds in preparation for the summer program they offer to kids. It
was hard and dirty work, but also fun. I also did some
trail maintenance. I picked this project because our
family likes to go there and so do many other people.
I wanted to make a more enjoyable experience for
them.
I want to thank Cantor Shiovitz, Rabbi Kane, Roni
Shapiro, my Hebrew school teachers and my parents
for helping me reach this special day. I also want to
thank Mrs. Slutsky for helping me with my speech.
I’m looking forward to becoming a Bar Mitzvah!

Fundraising and Development at CSI
When we fundraise and plan events, we put together committees as needed.
It works…but it’s certainly not optimal!
We’d like to create a year-round committee for fundraising and development.
Do you have any interest and/or experience in these areas?
Please contact Roberta Kay, Fundraising Chairperson
([email protected]) at your earliest convenience.
Thank you!

JOIN US FOR A SPECIAL KIDDUSH IN HONOR OF BOB DAVIS
FOR 25 YEARS OF RITUAL COMMITTEE SERVICE
Bob Davis has been chair of CSI's Ritual Committee for almost a quarter of a century! During that time he has
also been a regular Torah reader, often leading Shabbat morning services when the Cantor is away. For the
last number of years he has lead the Yom Kippur morning service, and prior to that he lead the morning service on the first day of Rosh Ha-Shanah. On the High Holidays he helps organize the honorees, making certain that the ark is opened at the proper time by the right people. More than all of that, Bob is a true mensch
who loves being Jewish and the CSI community. He is very proud of his three children, Rachel, Ben and Noah,
who grew up at CSI and celebrated their B'nei Mitzvah in our sanctuary. We are all grateful for the service
that Bob has given to our community and look forward to honoring him at a special Kiddush on June 20th.

SISTERHOOD NEWS
By Marion Jablansky, Secretary
The recent two-part women’s health event was another successful Sisterhood event. Almost 50 women attended each session, where we learned about
the latest tests, treatments and preventive care for
both ovarian and breast cancers. Many thanks to Dr.
Ginger Gardner, Dr. Sandra Brennan, and Dr. Mary
Gemignani for taking time out of their busy schedules to speak to us. Thanks also to Memorial Sloan
Kettering Cancer Center for providing us with these
physicians and for providing the refreshments and
token gifts. And a special thanks to Bette Slutsky for
arranging this event. We are now better educated
and better able to take control of our own health.
We also enjoyed hearing Maggie Anton, author of
the historical fiction series "Rashi's Daughters" and
"Rav Hisda's Daughter" ( "Rav Hisda's Daughter" was
chosen by Library Journal as the Best 2012 Historical
Fiction), speak about how she got involved in studying Talmud, and why she wrote about Rashi’s and
Rav Hisda’s daughters. Ms. Anton is very knowledgeable, and her insights about the Talmud are
both humorous and educational. If you are looking
for your next book to read, try a book in one of these
series.
The Sisterhood End-of-Year Event will be on
Wednesday, June 10, at 7:00PM. Be prepared to
sing, drink and eat as we celebrate another successful year for Sisterhood with Karaoke, wine and tasty
snacks.
The gift shop will not be open once Religious School
is done for the year. If you need anything, please
email the shop at [email protected], and
someone will get back to you as soon as possible to
set up a meeting time. The shop will reopen in the
fall when Religious School resumes.
As you can see, there is a lot going on at CSI Sisterhood. The new membership year begins on July 1.
Please make sure you are current on your dues. You
don’t want to miss out on any of these or future activities.
The CSI Bulletin and the CSI website are great
sources of information. Continue to read future bulletins, as well as check the website for future Sisterhood programs.
Also, we are always looking for new ideas, so if you
have any suggestions or wish to lead or help with an
activity, please let us know. Our officers/chairpersons are always open to new ideas.

IFCA
Our collection for IFCA continues until the end of
June. Please bring new or gently used men’s work
boots, hooded sweatshirts and jeans, as well as

work together to fill the new bins in the main lobby!
COMMUNITY GARDEN PROJECT
Help is needed with the Maryknoll Pachamama
Garden in Ossining from now through the end of
October. This established garden currently supplies
food to five local food pantries. There are many
opportunities to help – seeding, weeding, watering,
harvesting, and packing the food to be transported to
the food pantries.

Father Fernando welcomes volunteers any (and
every!) day from 7-10 a.m. and 1-4 p.m. Young
people 13-18 (with an adult ) are welcome, so this is
a great family opportunity for CSI families to help our
neighbors.

We are looking to expand our membership as we look
for new ways to improve our community and our
world. If you are interested in joining us, please contact Judy Boehr ([email protected] or at

collection drives. We hope to widen the types of
projects in which we engage, so please let us know
your thoughts.
Every Child Deserves A Jewish Education!
Please Support our Lev Program!
Donations are needed to pay for our Lev program for the 2015-2016 school year. Lev means “heart.”
CSI believes that all children, regardless of their developmental, emotional or cognitive challenges, should
receive a Jewish education. These special children are mainstreamed into our classes, or, if necessary, are
placed in a self-contained special Lev class.
Many people in the past few years have given generously to support our Lev program. Without their support, we could not have given children with varying emotional, behavioral and learning needs the opportunity to join our Religious School program. We help children who range from developmentally delayed to
autistic. Thanks to your generous donations, they, too, can have a Jewish education. Please make donations to the Mitzner Family Tuition Assistance Fund indicating they are to be used for the Lev Program.
Our Shabbat Services continue throughout
the summer. Please join us Friday evenings
at 6:30pm and Saturday mornings at 9:10am.
Our minyanim also continue throughout the summer:
Sundays at 9:15am
Mondays & Thursdays at 7:15am
