With over 20 years of history behind us, we are now launching our very first annual report. We want to use it to illustrate the terrific impetus for mobilisation that has supported our efforts over all these years. Here at the Yves Rocher Foundation, we firmly believe that individuals can change the world: - By supporting dedicated women who have created active communities - By planting trees around the world – a symbol of putting down roots - By preserving plant species which are unique and vital for everyone - By capturing moments in time through the enlightened eyes of photographers I would especially like to thank the Institut de France and the directors, who guide us with their expert advice, as well as our financial partners, who help us to consolidate our efforts every day all over the world. Lastly, the Yves Rocher Foundation would not exist without our primary sponsors, our donors and the customers of the Yves Rocher brand whose support is crucial for the ambitious campaign that is Plant for the Planet. I wish you a beautiful journey of discovery through the efforts we have led on every continent in 2013. Jacques Rocher Chancellor of the Institut de France Chairman of the Yves Rocher Foundation – Institut de France 06 © Patrick Wallet “ This first annual report for the Yves Rocher Foundation – Institut de France represents a huge leap forward for a Foundation which has been working with uncommon energy for 20 years now to protect and enhance the value of the plant world. Of course, I cannot help but pay tribute to the memory of Yves Rocher, a visionary and the builder of an empire without equal. On behalf of the Institut de France, which has supported his Foundation since 2001, I am delighted to see his efforts consolidated over time, honouring a remarkable man and his almost providential inspiration. From the Plant for the Planet campaign with its 50 million trees planted all over the world to the encouragement of first-rate photography events, not to mention the Terre de Femmes Award with its more than 325 winners, along with many other support, conservation, and environmental awareness initiatives, the Yves Rocher Foundation is now recognised as a model for success that does indeed deserve its own dedicated report. “ “ To leave a positive footprint “ A model for success Honorary Chairman of the Yves Rocher Foundation – Institut de France 07 P L A N T F OR T HE P L A N E T Trees nourish the soil and those who plant them. The Yves Rocher Foundation takes action to plant trees. By 2015, it is committed to plant 50 million trees. With the community of planters, around the world, is it the challenge of biodiversity. “Our joint effort led with the Yves Rocher Foundation four years ago has been a real boost for Green Ethiopia. In the Soloda area, we have reforested five valleys with ten different species of native trees. This operation has essentially saved Midmar Lake situated below, which was in danger of becoming silted up. Water is crucial here and trees are the key to restoring balance ” Irène Pfister Foundation Green Ethiopia 30 planting programmes in 26 5 different countries More than 8,850,000 trees planted in 2013 making a total of 33,100,000 trees planted e v a e l o T e v i t i s o ap t n i r p t o o f 4 flagship projects new planting projects India Ethiopia Mexico Russia France Romania Canada Spain Madagascar T he Yves Rocher Foundation has pledged to plant 50 million trees by 2015. All around the world, a community of planters is working together for a similar goal: biodiversity. The year 2013 saw a great deal of planting with a continued commitment to our flagship projects and the launch of new projects all over the world. LAUNCH OF NEW PLANTING OPERATIONS: WHERE EMOTION MEETS EXPERTISE The launch of the planting programme in the Netherlands following the signature of the partnership in 2012 with the Heg & Landschap Foundation was organised with local elected officials. A symbolic tree was planted in Sarphatipark. The planting programme includes 100,000 trees, the first of which have already been planted with the employees of the Yves Rocher brand. The Yves Rocher Foundation also visited Germany to launch a new planting programme for 10,000 trees in Bavaria as part of its partnership with the BergwaldProjekt. The results are encouraging and attest to the strong commitment from our planters. Poland Target: 300,000 trees to reforest plots of land stripped and damaged by the mines. The audit programme in partnership with Aeris Futuro underlined the quality of the work completed by the foresters, especially around the European larch plantation. Burkina Faso Russia © Patrick Wallet © Patrick Wallet © Dugraff Photographe Target: 350,000 trees to combat desertification. The quality of the tree nurseries and the involvement of the planters were highlighted during the audit. The low survival rate, currently considered insufficient, can be explained by harsh planting conditions. Target: 3,000,000 trees to reforest the boreal forest and protect the region’s ecosystem. As part of the end to the partnership with WWF Russia, the audit conducted provided evidence of the excellent plant survival rate. It is a real success for the native spruce species. Trees are gaining ground Planting in the heart of Montreal Hedgerows for biodiversity Between 3 and 11 November, an audit of the planting programme was conducted with Simon Pfister, Managing Director of Foundation Green Ethiopia, and afforded the opportunity to visit 15 plantations throughout the Tigray and Oromo regions. Extensive soil preparation and planting work was carried out by the local communities and commands admiration, with 13.8 million trees planted to date. The Foundation, in the centre of Montreal, unveiled the planting programme led with Les Amis de la Montagne. On 8th of June, in partnership with Elle Québec magazine, 200 readers came to plant 1,500 trees alongside Les Amis de la Montagne and the Yves Rocher employees. Following the new commitment to planting one million additional trees in France with the Afac-Agroforesteries (French Association for Field Trees and Hedgerows) at the end of 2013, more than 1,200,000 trees have been planted at 450 sites across the country. It provided an opportunity to invite the partners and in-store beauty consultants to come and plant trees in their towns. India Target: 15,000,000 trees to combat soil erosion. Fifteen tree nurseries and multiple plantations were inspected. The ambitious goal of 15 million trees is set to be achieved by 2015 thanks to the dedication of our partner Isha Foundation and the commitment from staff and volunteers. Ethiopia Target: 17,000,000 trees to protect water resources. Some 13.8 million trees have already been planted and the results can be seen on the land and for the local communities. Canada An audit was also conducted in Canada. The educational and professional outreach of the Les Amis de la Montagne organisation was observed. This follow-up demonstrated the Yves Rocher Foundation’s interest in and commitment to biodiversity in urban environments. The “Terre de Femmes” Award celebrates their work and their strenght. Working to achieve the Millennium Development Goals defined by the United Nations for women, the Yves Rocher Foundation has already awarded 325 winners in fifty countries. With them, the Yves Rocher Foundation strives for united environmentalism, which is critical for preserving biodiversity. countries took part women received awards in 2013 Germany France Switzerland Ukraine Morocco Russia Portugal “This award really motivated me. While I was certainly convinced of the cause, I didn’t think it would interest many people… So, to win the “Terre de Femmes” Award First Prize really boosted my confidence and, above all, gave me even more energy to pursue it.” Sylvie Monier Winner of the “Terre de Femmes” Award in 2008 CEREMONIES FILLED WITH EMOTION “Terre de Femmes” award ceremonies were held in 2013 in the seven countries participating in the “Terre de Femmes” programme – France, Germany, Switzerland, Portugal, Morocco, Ukraine and Russia. These ceremonies were a chance to highlight the leadership and the expertise of these remarkable women committed to environmental causes. Each ceremony provided the opportunity to bring together organisations from a variety of backgrounds, from environmental organisations to policymakers and partners of the Yves Rocher Brand. An important event took place this year as the “Terre de Femmes” Award celebrated its 10th Anniversary in Germany. The ceremony brought together over 200 people and welcomed Mr Fritz Kuhn, Mayor of Stuttgart, as the guest of honour. Women have a leading role in the development of this new type of farming – vegetables grown in recovery sacks help to significantly improve the quality of the daily diet. Some women have even developed an economic activity based around these sacks, thus strengthening their independence and their role within the household. The Grand Prix International was awarded to Naïma Fdil, the winner in Morocco, for her women’s cooperative project based on the roses in the Dadès Valley, promoting the links between environmental protection, economic development and the empowerment of women. She also received the Public Award as a result of online voting between the winners from each country. © A E Thion e v i t i s o ap © Patrick Wallet e v a e l o T The “Terre de Femmes Award” represents a network of over 325 women all over the world, all striving to protect the environment. It is our desire here at the Yves Rocher Foundation to promote this network, first of all by helping the winners to meet each other and exchange ideas. This was the case not only at the ceremonies, but also at the “Terre de Femmes” workshops we organised this year in France. We also gave the general public a chance to find out about these women’s efforts, with internet users able to show their support via online voting, which met with great success in 2013 and served as a sign of the tremendous ability of these remarkable women to rally others around their cause. 15 2013 winners 1st prize France Peggy PASCAL Solidarités International Nairobi - Kenya 1st prize Portugal 2nd prize France Isabelle VELARDE Marta PINTO 100 000 trees project Porto Women in Europe for a Common Future (WECF) Annemasse 2nd prize Portugal 3rd prize France Kafui KPODEHOUN Raquel ALVES FNAP - National Federation of Beekeepers in Portugal Center of Portugal (national impact) Culture(s) en Herbe(s) Paris 3rd prize Portugal 1st prize Germany Yesil Cember (Cercle vert) Margarida GOMES ABAE - European Blue Flag Association Lisboa (national impact) Berlin and 4 other cities 2nd prize Germany Michaela SKUBAN Slovakia 1 prize Switzerland Dr. Marlene ZAEHNER st 3rd prize Germany Dr. Brigitte Dahlbender Congo Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland (BUND) Bade-Wurtemberg 2nd prize Switzerland Judith ELLENS Associacion Eaternity Switzerland 3rd prize Switzerland Monica BIONDO 1st prize Ukraine Galyna CHEBOTAREVA Switzerland and global Local NGO for disabled people of Tokmak Ukraine, Tokmak (region of Zaporozhié) 1st prize Morocco Naima FDIL Women’s Association for Family Development in Wadi Dades Morocco, the Dades valley Ecole de la réussite Morocco, Marrakech 3 prize Morocco Oulaila Benlmlih rd 16 Moroccan Association for Ecotourism and Nature Protection Morocco, Rabat Chellah Ukraine, Poltava 1 prize Russia Nadezhda BAGLEY st 3rd prize Ukraine Nataliya PARAPANOVA Russia, Perm NGO «La ville propre» Ukraine, Lougansk 2nd prize Russia Elena LEVINA Russia, Samara 3rd prize Russia Erica KOTENKOVA Russia, Severouralsk 17 © A E Thion 2 prize Morocco Fatima KANDER nd 2nd prize Ukraine Nadiya KOSTINA P HO T O G R A P HY : “ P EO P L E & N A T U RE ” 3 400,000 photography initiatives supported The Yves Rocher Foundation sponsors photography because it is a «decisive moment» —a moment frozen in time—that creates a sense of wonder and leads to questions. P L A N T S & B I O D I VERS I T Y The Yves Rocher Foundation is committed to preserving the plant world and biodiversity. By providing funding and volunteering our skills, we support biodiversity protectors like scientists, researchers and botanists. Plants are essential to human life and are our hope for the future. 10 botanical projects supported this year “The Yves Rocher Foundation – Institut de France provides comprehensive and extremely valuable support to the Royaumont Foundation, in terms not only of funding, but also of skills-based and in-kind sponsorship, together with its botanical expertise.” Anne-Sophie Autran Head of Sponsorship and Philanthropy GARDEN CREATION AND EXPERIMENTS For 25 years, the Yves Rocher Foundation has supported scientists, researchers and botanists. One of the characteristics of this programme lies in the three-pronged approach of this assistance – funding, skills and in-kind sponsorship. In 2013, the Yves Rocher Foundation continued its efforts. Royaumont Abbey is a prime example of our partnerships in this programme, with the creation and development of the new Vegetable Garden. Experts from our primary sponsor, the Yves Rocher Brand, helped with its design and the initial groundwork for the green areas with landscaping company AVpaysagistes. Beyond the financial aspect, volunteering our skills not only entails these experts selecting and planting species, but also laying out the areas alongside the landscapers and garden teams. Other gardens also benefited from our efforts modelled on Royaumont – Kerazan Manor, Cluny Medieval Garden, Ferme de l’An Mil in Melrand and Saint-Philbert-de-Grand-Lieu Abbey. As is the case every year, the Yves Rocher Foundation presented the Award for Greatest Biodiversity at the Journées de la Rose in 2013. The antique “Roses Loubert” rose nurseries were honoured, with the rose garden accommodating more than 3,000 antique and botanical roses. Scientific activity saw a great deal of participation and support at the doctoral school of the French Natural History Museum and the OPTIMA Meeting. Through the Plant for the Planet programme and its partner organisations, there are several hundred men and women patiently planting and caring for trees. In 2013, more than 150 people, employees and customers of the Yves Rocher Brand, rallied together alongside reforestation professionals. Our botanical expertise programmes in contact with historical gardens have achieved success thanks to the involvement of botanists from the Yves Rocher brand who offer their know-how and experience for the protection of plant species. Lastly, through the Terre de Femmes Award, we cannot fail to note the mobilising strength of our women. More than 15,000 internet users took part in the Terre de Femmes online voting, thereby demonstrating their solidarity in the fight led by these remarkable women. The employees of the Yves Rocher Brand, our primary sponsor, were also able to get involved by taking part in pre-selection panels organised in France. Over the course of half a day, twenty employees studied the 72 submissions received to select 15 to be presented to the France panel of judges. “I discovered a day of planting through the Plant for the Planet programme and I found it incredible.
