historical and cultural heritage. The charming sites
include: the Church of Saint Peter of Montmartre the oldest in Paris; the Allée des Brouillards and its
chateaux; the Lapin Agile, the oldest cabaret belonging
to Bruant; the Moulin de la Gallette, immortalised
by Renoir; the Bateau Lavoir where Picasso created
Cubism; the Maison Rose in front of which Utrillo
used to paint...

Niki de Saint Phalle
(Title and dates pending)
8th October 2014 to 18th
January 2015
Grand Palais - Galeries Nationales
Niki de Saint Phalle was one of
the first female artists to become
famous in her own lifetime,
in the early 1960s. The only
woman member of the
New Realist movement, today she
is simultaneously well-known and
little-known as a popular artist.
Behind “the woman hides” an artist
whose singular work imposes itself
through its violence, commitment
and radical nature, from the daring
of her performances to the political
and feminist content of her plastic
work.
Twenty years after a major
retrospective in Paris, the Grand
Palais invites visitors to rediscover
Niki de Saint Phalle and her work.

(Baccarat: crystal treasures)
8th October 2014 to 4th January 2015 Petit Palais,
Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris
For the 250th anniversary of the foundation of the Baccarat crystal works,
this exhibition pays tribute to the virtuosity of crystal artists.
An exceptional choice of over 300 pieces from the famous manufacturer
from Lorraine is complemented by prestigious contributions from the
Musée d’Orsay, the Louvre, the Arts Décoratifs, the Cité de la Céramique,
the Arts et Métiers, the Château de Compiègne and the Musées de Nancy.
The accent is placed on Baccarat creations presented at the Grand Parisian
Exhibitions from 1823 to 1937. As a contrast, works by Jaime Hayon, Ettore
Sottsass and Philippe Starck are on display to illustrate the links between
heritage and contemporary design.

Since 2009, the Paris Region Tourist Board and Viparis have been working
on the Welcome Pack initiative.
It is a comprehensive free pack providing information about orientation
and transport for visitors, exhibitors and participants, and is available in
train stations and airports as well as the event venue itself.
It is given free of charge to the organisers of international events taking
place at exhibition centres in Paris and its region, subject to eligibility.
It is a unique initiative focused around four major imperatives:
Welcome and Inform, Guide, Transport and Receive.
Ever year, the Welcome Pack represents:
- around fifty indoor events;
- over 130 days of deployment;
- 65,000 trade fair and congress visitors/exhibitors transported in shuttle
buses.

2014: a year through History
2014: a year through
History
2014 is marked by many anniversaries for
Paris Region: the bicentenary of the French
Campaign of Napoleon I, the 70th anniversary
of the Liberation of Paris during the Second
World War and the centenary of the beginning
of the First World War.
These important events are celebrated with
commemorations and exhibitions, and
unmissable sights and monuments.
The Paris Region Tourist Board offers tours
and trips for visitors to discover and enjoy
these historic events under the best possible
conditions.
Tracing Napoleon’s path
Paris Region boasts many souvenirs of Napoleon I and the Napoleonic Empire.
For the bicentenary of the French Campaign and the Battle of Paris, the region invites visitors
to follow in the footsteps of the French Emperor (1804 - 1814 and 1815).
Imperial residence at Fontainebleau
Napoleon considered the Château de Fontainebleau to be “the true home of kings, the house of ages”.
The royal French residence since 1137, the chateau was restored and refurnished by Napoleon I just after the
revolution and is a tribute to the First Empire.

Château de Fontainebleau
Surrounded by 130 hectares of parks and gardens, the Château de
Fontainebleau is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site. Today, it still
houses a great many treasures of the Imperial era.
The Napoleon I Museum has an exceptional collection of furniture, art,
art objects, weapons, clothing, documents and historical souvenirs that
belonged to the Imperial family.
The Sovereign Grands Appartements present the private apartment
of Napoleon I, as it would have been in the First Empire.
The Petits Appartements can also be visited. They were inhabited by
Napoleon and Joséphine, then Napoleon and Marie-Louise.

(The Bicentenary of the Abdication
of Napoleon I)
April 2014
For two weekends, the Château
de Fontainebleau becomes the
stage, once again, of the end of the
First Empire and the abdication of
Napoleon in 1814.
Historical reenactments bring to
life the events that took place,
showing them in a new light.

De bronze et de pierre
dure, un cadeau espagnol
à Napoléon 1er
(Bronze and hard stone, a gift to
Napoleon I from Spain)
Until 3rd February 2014
In the hope of retaining the Spanish
throne, Charles IV sent the Emperor
a fabulous table centrepiece made
of hard stone, bronze and cameos.
However, the present was not to
French tastes. It was dismantled
and divided between the Tuileries
Gardens, Fontainebleau, Trianon
and Meudon.
The pieces have been reunited for
the exhibition at Fontainebleau.
Peintre des rois,
roi des peintres
(Painter of kings, king of painters)
29th March to 30th June 2014
Trained in Jacques-Louis David’s
studio, François Gérard had an
illustrious painting career thanks
to his talents as a historical and
portrait artist.
Commissions from Bonaparte from
1800 onwards ensured his official
position.
Bringing together some 70
graphic and pictorial works, this
retrospective finally pays tribute
to the artist whose contemporaries
nicknamed the “Le Peintre des rois

Joséphine and Napoleon at Rueil-Malmaison
Under the Consulate, the Château de Malmaison became the residence of Napoleon and Joséphine Bonaparte.
In this beautiful residence, Joséphine organised feasts and banquets; the government regularly met here between
1800 and 1802. The tomb of Joséphine Bonaparte is also in Rueil-Malmaison.
Château de Malmaison
The Malmaison estate is an authentic
example of the imperial era.
Furniture, tapestries, woodwork,
paintings and many collections of
period objects make the Château
de Malmaison a precious gem from
the First Empire.
Temporary exhibitions and events
are regularly organised.
In spring 2014, an exhibition about
Joséphine’s passion for botany will

Napoleon in Versailles
The very famous Château de Versailles also became the Museum of French History, under the instructions of
Louis-Philippe, the new French king in 1830. It exhibits many works of art dedicated to
Napoleonic history.
Museum of French History
The Battles gallery
Thirty-three monumental
paintings depict the military
history of France, from Tolbiac in
496 to Wagram in 1809.
Salle de 1792
Dedicated to this key point in the
French Revolution, here there are
portraits of Bonaparte and young
officers who became the generals
and marshals of the Consulate and
then the Empire.
Grand Trianon
The Grand Trianon, built by Jules
Hardouin Mansart in 1687, is
without a doubt the most refined
collection of buildings in the entire
Versailles estate.
After having commissioned its
restoration, Napoleon Bonaparte
stayed there several times with his
second wife, the Empress MarieLouise. The current layout is very
close to that of the First Empire.
Coronation Room
A décor to the glory of the Empire, heightened by two paintings by
Jacques-Louis David, The Coronation of Napoleon and The Distribution
of the Eagle Standards. Also, two portraits of Napoleon, one young,
as a general, the other in his coronation outfit, alongside portraits of
his wives: Joséphine de Beauharnais and Marie-Louise de HabsbourgLorraine.
The Emperor’s small apartments
Napoleon occupied these
apartments for the first time in
1809, in the period that followed
his divorce from Joséphine.
The Empress’ apartments
In the left wing we find the
Empress’ bedroom, the Salon des
Glaces, the Salon de la Chapelle...

Part of the prestigious Hôtel

Museum boasts priceless
collections, from the Middle Ages
to the modern day.
The collections concerning Napoleon
Bonaparte, his armies and his
marshals are particularly
remarkable. The museum retraces
the Imperial campaigns and
presents the weaponry and military
corps that made their mark.
Among the treasures presented by
the museum, the famous painting
by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres:
Napoleon I on his Imperial Throne.
Also present are the chain of the
Grand Master of the Order of the
Legion of Honour and a case of four
pistols that belonged to Napoleon.
Pantheon
Originally, under Louis XV, the
Pantheon was dedicated to Saint
Genevieve, the patron saint of Paris.
Since then, with the admission of
Victor Hugo in 1885, it has become
the place of rest for French patriots:
Voltaire, Rousseau, Zola, Pierre and
Marie Curie…
The First Empire is the period
during which the greatest number
were admitted to the Pantheon:
41 grand dignitaries of the Empire
were buried here.

typical of American military cemeteries: huge green
lawns topped with rows of white marble crosses. Here
there are 1,541 tombs of American soldiers who died in

La Libération en région parisienne
(Paris outraged, Paris martyred, Paris liberated
Liberation in Paris and its region)
June to October 2014
Hôtel de Ville de Paris
The combined actions of Leclerc’s soldiers and the
4th American Division, along with the mobilisation
of “members of the Resistance” and the residents of
Paris remain a rare example of national unity. It was the
Liberation of not just Paris but the whole region that
was at stake as the tough battles continued.
This exhibition reproduces a Parisian view of this major
episode in French history, and focuses on its impact on
the world. Created by the Musée du Général Leclerc de
Hauteclocque et de la Libération de Paris / Musée
Jean Moulin, this free exhibition opens the pages of this
historic event using: audiovisual archives, amateur films
and interviews, newspapers, photographs, drawings and
objects from the museum’s own collection and private or
public collections.

As well as what happened on “D-Day” on Normandy’s

Hôtel Ritz
Re-opening planned
for December 2014
Open in 1898, the Ritz is a
legendary landmark in Paris’ hotel
history. This five-star hotel clearly
displays its ambition of achieving
the distinction of “Palace Hotel”.
To achieve this, it has embarked on
a complete renovation integrating
completely new interior décor and
renovation of historic areas whilst
retaining the spirit of this hotel,
so clearly part of its magnificent
surroundings: the Place Vendôme.
On the programme: the creation
of a summer restaurant under a
mobile glasshouse, the addition of
more suites, the extension to the
ballroom...
