This is even impressive than it sounds. “In the ‘70s and ‘80s, people knew it as an open sewer,” says Katie Lamboy, education coordinator for the Bronx River Alliance, an organization created to protect and restore the waterway. “Even today, people don’t believe all of the wonderful work that has been done.” It’s surprisingly easy to forget that polluted history as your canoe glides along the city’s only freshwater river. The Alliance began leading three-hour outings to combat misconceptions. “The canoeing program was a way to educate the public, to get them on the river, to see how much it’s changed these past 30 years,” says Lamboy, whose group now brings out nearly 2,000 people annually. The eight-mile paddle provides a new perspective of both the New York Botanical Garden and Bronx Zoo, as well as a prime leaf-peeping outpost for the lush Bronx River Forest. A lucky few may even catch a glimpse of the borough’s new toothy resident. —Sam Tasch PHOTO: MALCOLM PINCKNEY/NEW YORK CITY DEPARTMENT OF PARKS AND RECREATION { ONLY IN NEW YORK } { 2 | FALL 2015 | 5BOROS.COM canoeingFINAL.indd 2 8/17/15 3:40 PM Complete access. Any minute now, a deranged-looking fellow named Dr. Oxy will burst out of a closet. We’ll have one hour to break free before… Let me interrupt this narrative to say we entered this room willingly. And before you lump us in with all those clueless slasher-flm victims, know this: trying to survive the zombie apocalypse is way more fun in real life than in The Walking Dead. Which is why physical room escape “adventures” have become a global phenomenon, with outlets in more than 25 countries. Though themes and production companies vary, the premise of these experiences is the same: participants race against the clock to fnd clues that lead to the way out. The rooms host outings from Fortune 500 companies and birthday parties alike; in the end, this is a community-building exercise. But while it’s great for teams, there is a particularly urban satisfaction in collaborating with strangers. Back to the room. A buzzer blasts and the invasion begins. Dr. Oxy is chained to the wall, but every fve minutes his chain grows a bit longer. Clues are tucked in books, scribbled on a postcard and hidden in cabinets and drawers. But to get most of them, you must cross by the zombie and risk getting “eaten,” and that means you have to sit for the duration. If it seems silly, you have not witnessed the imposing presence of Dr. Oxy. Action, including loud screams and hysterical laughter, ensues. One clue leads to another and then another. But expect no outside help: cell phones are banned from the room. For one hour, there is no pinging texts, no checking email and no Googling answers. “When you attempt a room escape adventure, for 60 minutes of your life you will become totally removed from your current world and are focused on nothing but escape,” says Nicole DaCosta, Director of Marketing at Bucket List Productions, which produces my torture of choice, Trapped in a Room with a Zombie. She’s right. There is no time for zoning out. With the clock ticking and your task outlined, the prop-flled room accomplishes the impossible task of keeping 21st-century participants excited and engaged. Training to survive the End of Days? Well that’s just a bonus. —Elly Blum ILLUSTRATION: ANDERS WENNGREN An interactive adventure is a chance to plan your exit strategy 4| FALL 2015 | 5BOROS.COM Escape the RoomFINAL.indd 2 8/17/15 2:44 PM { ONLY IN NEW YORK } R Next Stop... ...25th Street, Brooklyn SOME SAY GREENWOOD HEIGHTS, OTHERS STAUNCHLY STICK with South Slope. Head back to the land, by way of an idyllic farm in Queens LONG BEFORE CHICKEN coops appeared in every city slicker’s backyard and beehives buzzed on rooftops across Brooklyn, Jacob and Catherine Adriance bought a farm in Floral Park. Nearly 250 years later, that land is now the Queens County Farm Museum, a bucolic haven set between high-rise developments and the Grand Central Parkway. The National Center for Education reports that the increase in students aged 25 and older is greater than the increase in younger enrollment (42% to 34%, respectively). In addition, between 5 and 10 percent of Baby Boomers are choosing to go back to college when they retire. These “reentry” students return to school to pursue new career directions, start new businesses and realize lifelong dreams. Another non-traditional demographic found in today’s educational system are veterans. Considering a return to campus? Here are some things to consider. ADVERTI SI NG S U P P LEMENT Know Your Goal What is motivating your return to academia? Before you choose a school, you should have a clear idea of what you intend to get out of the experience. Whether you are attending college for the ÀUVWWLPHRUUHHQWHULQJORQJDIWHUJUDGXDWLRQ\RXUQHHGV and expectations should be clear. Take stock of your goals and commit them to paper for further clarity. Start with a Summer Class A great way to be sure of your desire to return to school is to take a continuing education or summer class at a local college or at the school where you intend to enroll full- or part-time. Not only will this test your resolve before committing to a larger program, but any credits you earn may most likely be applied towards a degree should you choose to go on. Full- or Part-Time? A key factor for adults returning to college is time management. Most likely you’ll be juggling work, family and community roles that QHFHVVLWDWHÁH[LELOLW\DFULWLFDOIDFWRUWRNHHSLQPLQG when selecting a school and committing to full- or SDUWWLPHHQUROOPHQW$OVRÀJXUHRQKDYLQJWZR hours of homework for every hour you spend in the classroom. The decision to earn a higher degree is not only about the cost of tuition, it is also about the commitment of time. A full-time commitment means that you’ll be putting your current work life on hold to pursue your degree. Wooded, serene, dripping with history, graveyards like Woodlawn in the Bronx, Maple Grove in Queens and Green-Wood in Brooklyn want to be seen as more than crypt keepers. We have our murals—and they’re year round and worth a visit by Haylin Belay photography by Michael Marquand THERE’S A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STREET ART AND GRAFFITI, AS A STROLL NEAR the L train’s Jefferson Ave. stop makes clear. In Bushwick’s burgeoning outdoor art scene, simple tags and random vulgarity have taken a back seat to more visually arresting and socially conscious work, much of which has been curated. Yes, curated. Urban blight, this is not. The Bushwick Collective, a spiritual successor to recently demolished but fondly remembered street art canvas 5 Pointz, is local Joseph Ficalora’s attempt to create something beautiful in a place of great pain: the site where his father was killed. Ficalora is reclaiming the neighborhood one spray paint can at a time. Sheryo & Yok, Dasic and Jetsonorama are a small sample of artists—international superstars and homegrown heroes alike—whose murals line these streets. For now, anyway; the temporary nature of this art form means the exhibits are constantly changing. The epicenter of activity in Bushwick is the intersection of Troutman Street and St. Nicholas Avenue. A few steps in any direction reveal eclectic depictions of everything from abstract shapes to hyperrealistic portraits. For those looking for more of a museum experience, the Collective’s Graff Tour leads visitors on a 90-minute walk around the neighborhood’s greatest hits. But feel free to head out on your own; the art might be larger than life, but it was meant to sneak up on you. . 44 | FALL 2015 | 5BOROS.COM BushwickFINAL.indd 2 8/17/15 5:39 PM Mural by Dasic Fernandez: Troutman Street between Cypress and Scott avenues.
