A canoe trip offers a fresh view of the Bronx
IT TOOK 200 YEARS, BUT AN AMERICAN BEAVER HAS ONCE AGAIN MADE A DAM
IN the Bronx River. This is even impressive than it sounds. “In the ‘70s and ‘80s,
people knew it as an open sewer,” says Katie Lamboy, education coordinator for the
Bronx River Alliance, an organization created to protect and restore the waterway.
“Even today, people don’t believe all of the wonderful work that has been done.”
It’s surprisingly easy to forget that polluted history as your canoe glides along the
city’s only freshwater river. The Alliance began leading three-hour outings to combat
misconceptions. “The canoeing program was a way to educate the public, to get
them on the river, to see how much it’s changed these past 30 years,” says Lamboy, whose group now brings out nearly 2,000 people annually. The eight-mile paddle provides a new perspective of both the New York Botanical Garden and Bronx
Zoo, as well as a prime leaf-peeping outpost for the lush Bronx River Forest. A lucky
few may even catch a glimpse of the borough’s new toothy resident. —Sam Tasch

Break Out Performance
I
’M LOCKED IN A MIDTOWN MANHATTAN
room with a small group of friends and strangers, waiting for the zombie apocalypse to begin.
Any minute now, a deranged-looking fellow
named Dr. Oxy will burst out of a closet. We’ll
have one hour to break free before…
Let me interrupt this narrative to say we entered this
room willingly. And before you lump us in with all
those clueless slasher-flm victims, know this: trying to
survive the zombie apocalypse is way more fun in real
life than in The Walking Dead. Which is why physical
room escape “adventures” have become a global phenomenon, with outlets in more than 25 countries.
Though themes and production companies vary, the
premise of these experiences is the same: participants
race against the clock to fnd clues that lead to the way
out. The rooms host outings from Fortune 500 companies and birthday parties alike; in the end, this is a community-building exercise. But while it’s great for teams,
there is a particularly urban satisfaction in collaborating
with strangers.
Back to the room. A buzzer blasts and the invasion
begins. Dr. Oxy is chained to the wall, but every fve
minutes his chain grows a bit longer. Clues are tucked
in books, scribbled on a postcard and hidden in cabinets
and drawers. But to get most of them, you must cross
by the zombie and risk getting “eaten,” and that means
you have to sit for the duration. If it seems silly, you
have not witnessed the imposing presence of Dr. Oxy.
Action, including loud screams and hysterical laughter, ensues. One clue leads to another and then another.
But expect no outside help: cell phones are banned
from the room. For one hour, there is no pinging texts,
no checking email and no Googling answers. “When
you attempt a room escape adventure, for 60 minutes
of your life you will become totally removed from your
current world and are focused on nothing but escape,”
says Nicole DaCosta, Director of Marketing at Bucket
List Productions, which produces my torture of choice,
Trapped in a Room with a Zombie.
She’s right. There is no time for zoning out. With
the clock ticking and your task outlined, the prop-flled
room accomplishes the impossible task of keeping
21st-century participants excited and engaged. Training
to survive the End of Days? Well that’s just a bonus.

Flushing Meadows Corona Park
(897 acres), home to two World’s
Fairs and the iconic Unisphere, a
140-foot-tall globe that sits at 23.5
degrees, the same angle as earth.
Pelham Bay Park (2,765 acres), the
site of the Battle of Pell’s Point in
the Revolutionary War, in which
843 American soldiers defeated
more than 4,000 Redcoats.
OLDEST
Veterans Park—originally Port Richmond Park—was built in 1836 as
the village green for the well-populated town of the same name.
Queens erected its first public
Christmas tree in Daniel Carter
Beard Mall, which dates back to
1841.
Jerome Park Reservoir, which
opened in 1867 as a racetrack, and
hosted the first Belmont Stakes.
CLAIM

Herman Melville’s brother Thomas
governed Snug Harbor when it
was a home for retired sailors.
“Queens Giant,” the city’s oldest
and tallest measured tree, is in
Alley Pond. The Tulip Poplar is 450
years old and 133.8 feet tall—20
feet shy of the Statue of Liberty.
Mark Twain and Teddy Roosevelt
were both tenants at the Wave Hill
estate when it was the summer
residence of publisher William H.
Appleton.
INTO THE
WOODS
The Greenbelt boasts more than
35 miles of hiking trails, ranging
from less than a mile to 12 miles
long, which wind through thick
forests, a preserved 18th-century
village and Moses Mountain.
Birdwatchers and other nature
lovers can spot horseshoe crabs,
diamondback turtles and 330
aviary species in the trails and
ecosystems crisscrossing Jamaica
Bay Wildlife Preserve.
Inwood Hill Park’s trails overlook
the Hudson River. Many lead to
caves that are scattered with
Lenape Native American artifacts.
FOR
THE KIDS
The aptly named Sports Park
has go-karts, mini golf and
batting cages.
Ride the Corona Cobra Coaster in
Flushing Meadow’s Fantasy Forest,
the borough’s only amusement park.
In Macombs Dam Park, little
leaguers can swing for the fences

Back to School: Returning to
School as a Mid-Career, Mature
and/or Veteran Student
A
dults have become the fastest growing
demographic in colleges and universities
across the country. The National Center for
Education reports that the increase in students
aged 25 and older is greater than the increase
in younger enrollment (42% to 34%, respectively). In addition,
between 5 and 10 percent of Baby Boomers are choosing to
go back to college when they retire. These “reentry” students
return to school to pursue new career directions, start new
businesses and realize lifelong dreams. Another non-traditional
demographic found in today’s educational system are veterans.
Considering a return to campus?
Here are some things to consider.
ADVERTI SI NG
S U P P LEMENT
Know Your Goal What is motivating your return to
academia? Before you choose a school, you should
have a clear idea of what you intend to get out of the
experience. Whether you are attending college for the
ÀUVWWLPHRUUHHQWHULQJORQJDIWHUJUDGXDWLRQ\RXUQHHGV
and expectations should be clear. Take stock of your
goals and commit them to paper for further clarity.
Start with a Summer Class
A great way to be sure of your
desire to return to school is
to take a continuing
education or summer
class at a local
college or at the
school where
you intend to
enroll full- or
part-time.
Not only will
this test your
resolve before
committing to a
larger program, but any
credits you earn may most likely be applied towards a
degree should you choose to go on.
Full- or Part-Time? A key factor for adults returning
to college is time management. Most likely you’ll
be juggling work, family and community roles that

when selecting a school and committing to full- or

hours of homework for every hour you spend in the
classroom. The decision to earn a higher degree is
not only about the cost of tuition, it is also about the
commitment of time.
A full-time commitment means that you’ll be putting
your current work life on hold to pursue your degree. In
WKLVFDVH\RX·OOZDQWWREHVXUH\RXKDYH\RXUÀQDQFHVLQ
line and, if necessary, arrange a sabbatical from your job.
Depending on your school choice, you may also need
to decide whether to live on or close to campus or to
commute from home. Most schools understand the time
constraints adult students face and offer nighttime and
weekend classes. Some schools also provide childcare.

may be your current employer. Many companies offer
tuition assistance, as do professional organizations if
you are a member.
Technology If you graduated over 10 years ago it
is likely that you did not book your classes online,
submit your papers online or use an iPad in class.
Technology is the most dramatic change in education
today, so, if you are heading back to campus, you
need to understand how basic technology works
and how it will be incorporated in your learning. You
should also know what tech products will be supplied
and which you should plan on purchasing.
Blended Learning As mentioned above, technology
LVUHGHÀQLQJHGXFDWLRQ5HFHQWO\WKH861DWLRQDO
Center for Education Statistics reported that one in
10 students was enrolled exclusively in online courses,
with an estimated 7 million American students
engaged in some form of online learning. Today, any
return to school may include what is called blended
learning—the combination of online and in-person
classroom instruction. This balance works particularly
well for returning students with busy schedules in

learning (as it is also referred to as) can offer more
personalized, student-focused and convenient forms
of teaching than is often found in a traditional
classroom-based curriculum where students are
typically addressed as a group. It’s a good bet that as
a returning adult student you will rely heavily on this

beachfronts and amazing history and cultural sites
to quaint towns, family and artisanal businesses
and sports and activities, Staten Island has

The city’s graveyards have something for everyone.
This fall, if you want to:
CELEBRATE A SUFFRAGETTE. Check Woodlawn’s website (woodlawn.org) for details
about Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s birthday.
STEP BACK IN TIME. Join the Transit Museum for a nostalgic ride in a WWI-era subway

info/mta/museum/programs).
HONOR THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CIVIL WAR. Head to Maple Grove (friendsofmaplegrove.org) for an event meant to introduce you to the dozens of Civil War characters, famous and infamous alike, buried on the grounds.
GO BACK TO SCHOOL. There won’t be a test, but Green-Wood (green-wood.com) will be
celebrating Eberhard Faber, father of the popular No. 2 lead pencil.
LEAF PEEP. Forget Vermont; these cemeteries offer acres of trees and wildlife. So stop by
for a laid-back stroll, trolley tour or private group tours. Trust Woodlawn Conservancy’s
Susan Olsen when she says: “We kick the Botanical Gardens’...”
BE AFRAID. Plenty of graveyards cash in on Halloween. Check out St. John the Divine
(stjohndivine.org) for its annual Crypt Crawl and Halloween Extravaganza. Trinity Church
(trinitywallstreet.org) and Maple Grove throw kid-friendly trick-or-treat events. And for
that flashlight tour at Staten Island and Fountain Cemeteries: Take the #40 bus from the
Staten Island Ferry to 1562 Richmond Terrace (at the corner of Alaska Street).

TOWN
Let Vermont have its colorful trees.
We have our murals—and they’re

by Haylin Belay

THERE’S A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STREET ART AND GRAFFITI, AS A STROLL NEAR
the L train’s Jefferson Ave. stop makes clear. In Bushwick’s burgeoning outdoor art scene,
simple tags and random vulgarity have taken a back seat to more visually arresting and socially
conscious work, much of which has been curated. Yes, curated. Urban blight, this is not.
The Bushwick Collective, a spiritual successor to recently demolished but fondly remembered street art canvas 5 Pointz, is local Joseph Ficalora’s attempt to create something
beautiful in a place of great pain: the site where his father was killed. Ficalora is reclaiming
the neighborhood one spray paint can at a time. Sheryo & Yok, Dasic and Jetsonorama are
a small sample of artists—international superstars and homegrown heroes alike—whose
murals line these streets. For now, anyway; the temporary nature of this art form means
the exhibits are constantly changing.
The epicenter of activity in Bushwick is the intersection of Troutman Street and St. Nicholas Avenue. A few steps in any direction reveal eclectic depictions of everything from
abstract shapes to hyperrealistic portraits. For those looking for more of a museum experience, the Collective’s Graff Tour leads visitors on a 90-minute walk around the neighborhood’s greatest hits. But feel free to head out on your own; the art might be larger than
life, but it was meant to sneak up on you.

{ MY BORO}

Placing second in 2011’s NYC Marathon made
the Ethiopian-born Kingston resident a hometown favorite. But that was just another of the
elite distance runner’s fast starts. Now she’s
aiming to be the first local to win the city’s
marathon. On a rare break from training, Deba
talked up her adopted borough’s best place ...
FOR A RUNNER’S HIGH: The loops in Van Cortlandt
Park—it’s up and down. I have three courses—1.7
miles, 3 miles and 9 miles. Sometimes people stop
me mid-run for a picture. I always say yes.
FOR WINDING DOWN POST-RUN: A green tea at
the Starbucks on 225th and Broadway.
FOR A MOTIVATIONAL BURST: Mile 20 of the mar-
athon. As I cross the Willis Avenue Bridge, people
shout “Buzu” and my face is on a billboard!
FOR SURVIVING THE POLAR VORTEX: Planet
Fitness is near our apartment. I bike for muscle
strength, or do speedwork if the field is too icy.
FOR A DOSE OF HOME: On Ethiopian New Year
(Sept. 12) we cook a traditional feast and friends
come to pray and eat. I make the injera.
FOR A REST-DAY WARDROBE: I’m a browser so
I like to wander the shops on Fordham Road.
FOR INSPIRATION: I love the Bronx Zoo. The
giraffes are my favorite.
FOR A FRIGHT: The zoo’s World of Reptiles.
I won’t go near the snakes!
