My Heart
is in the East
FROM THE DESK OF RABBI LOREN FILSON LAPIDUS
W
ith May, my heart goes to the East. Not only does my husband head off to Israel with the Davis
Academy 8th grade, but we as a Jewish community turn our hearts towards Israel with the celebration of Yom HaZikaron, Israeli Memorial Day, and Yom HaAtzmaut, Israeli Independence
Day. From thousands of miles away, we as American Jews acknowledge these sacred days as our own.
This period of mourning and celebration resonates powerfully because the State of Israel is still so young.
Many people reading this can point in their lifetimes to a period when there was no Israel, the years leading
up to 1948 when we so desperately needed our homeland, or can recall 1967 or 1973, when Israel successfully defended herself in the face of overwhelming odds. We have seen recent wars and terrorist attacks and
are continually reminded of the sacrifices made to ensure Israel’s survival.
I would offer that this season is powerful for another reason: it is an opportunity for
all of the Jewish community to unite around ahavat Yisrael, love of Israel. We
know that there are many divisions when it comes to Israel’s policies and
advocacy; this is a moment for all of us to rise above the divisions and
unite as Jews. Anti-Israel rhetoric continues around the world, Israel
continues to be held to a double-standard, and thus now more than
ever we need to unite in care and concern for our homeland. Let us
take two days to share in our love of Israel and our commitment to
her survival and peace. We can mourn the thousands who have
lost their lives through wars and terrorist attacks and we can celebrate the miracle that is our Jewish state.
We are all increasingly worn by the debates and politics, the
growing divide among Jews’ attitudes and advocacy for Israel. My
prayer is that we pause this Yom HaZikaron to remember that the
Israel about which we speak and debate exists because of the continuing service and sacrifice of young men and women, sons
and daughters, and pause this Yom HaAtzmaut to remember
that Israel’s independence is a blessing to be nurtured and
never taken for granted. May we then emerge from these
days renewed in our love of Israel and our willingness to talk
and work together for her future.
We are delighted that Rabbi Esteban Gottfried of Beit
TefilahYisraeli in Tel Aviv will be joining us on Wednesday, May 11, at 7:00 PM to lead a special havdalah service
at The Temple to transition from Yom HaZikaron to Yom
HaAtzmaut. This service is open to the community and we
hope you will attend.

CHIEF RABBI LORD JONATHAN SACKS AND
IRA FL ATROW: SCIENCE, RELIGION, AND THE
SEARCH FOR MEANING
Sunday, May 1 • 2:00 PM
There have been ages when religion tried to dominate science, and there have been ages when science tried to dominate religion. Take a fascinating
look at the interdependence of religion and science with former Chief Rabbi Lord
Jonathan Sacks and the host of NPS’s popular “Science Friday,” Ira Flatrow, as
they explore the ways in which they complement each other in our lives.
Young Professionals Programs
The Well• Friday, May 6 • 8:00 PM
This month, we welcome the song stylings and vocals of the incredibly talented
Hannah Zale! We will see you on Friday, May 6, for The Well, our Young
Professional’s monthly, late Shabbat service. Inspired by the power of the well in the
Jewish tradition as a nexus for community and for physical, spiritual, and emotional
nourishment, Shabbat services at The Well at The Temple aspire to be the same.
Join Rabbi David Spinrad for an evening of soulful spirituality, fun socializing,
and services that feel inclusive for people of all levels of familiarity and comfort
with Judaism. To RSVP, email Cherie Winsett ([email protected]) and for
questions or for more information email Rabbi Spinrad: [email protected].
Temple Book Club
Tuesday, May 10, 2016 • 7:30pm
We will be reading Uncovered. Leah Lax tells her story
beginning as a young teen who left her liberal, secular
home for life as a Hasidic Jew, and ending as a fortysomething woman who has to abandon the only world
she has known for thirty years. In crystalline prose, Lax
details her experiences with arranged marriage, cult-like
faith, and motherhood. Led by Sally Stanhope.

• To go back even further, see our Torah.
• Check out our Biography section for books on Teddy Kolleck, Golda Meir,

Havdalah Ceremony for Yom Ha’Zikaron to
Yom Ha’Atzmaut with Rabbi Esteban Gottfried
Wednesday, May 11 • 7 PM • Covenant Chapel
One of the most challenging moments in the Jewish- Israeli calendar year is the
moment of transition from Yom Ha’Zikaron (Memorial Day) to Yom Ha’Atzmaut
(Independence Day). Each year, these important and momentous days take place
one day after the other, forcing Israelis to grapple with the stark transition from
solemn and somber, to jubilation and celebration.
This stark transition captures the intensity of modern Israeli life, however, many
Israelis feel alienated by the official commemorations that emphasize nationalism
or religion. Rabbi Esteban Gottfried at Beit Tefilah Israeli in Tel Aviv recognized
a number of years ago the need for a sensitive ceremony that celebrates Israel’s
national triumph, yet expresses the sorrow for a dream of peace, still unfulfilled.
This Havdalah service has been replicated in dozens congregations of all the
denominations in Israel and also in New York, Philadelphia, Koeln, Barcelona, Sao
Paulo, Buenos Aires, and more. This Year we are proud to bring this special ceremony, in this special day, to The Temple in Atlanta.

Caring at The Temple
Our Caring at The Temple program reaches out to fellow congregants during times of hardship or pastoral need, providing
homemade chicken soup and challah to members who are
bereaved, ill, recently discharged from the hospital, or are celebrating the arrival of a new child. We have delivered more than
500 soups, and nearly every step of the program—from soup
preparation, to delivery (within your zip code), to letting us
know about fellow congregants in need—is led by members of our congregation.
Thank you to our Caring at The Temple volunteers who delivered soup this
month: Sandy Cox, Duane Cox, Esther Zells, Debbie Shelton.
To be a part of this program and to fulfill the mitzvah of bikkur cholim
(visiting the sick) or to let us know who needs soup, please contact Rabbi
David Spinrad at [email protected] or 404-873-1731.

Zaban Couples Center
The residential season at the Zaban Couples
Center came to a close at the end of April.
A huge thank you to all of the volunteers
from the Temple family who contributed to
a successful year.
At the graduation ceremony in early
April, three former residents came back
to speak. Their stories were truly inspiring and illustrative of just how much the work that the Center does can
change the lives of its residents. In one case a resident who had lost his job
and custody of his son due to alcoholism spoke about how being at the
Zaban Couples Center helped him quit drinking and prepared him to get
a job and regain custody of his child.
This year’s graduating class of residents put together a yearbook of what
the center has meant to them. Yearbooks are available for purchase by
contacting Marc Green at [email protected]. Opportunities to support the Zaban Couples Center ready for its next residential
season abound. Please contact [email protected] if you are
interested in volunteering or visit the website www.zabancouplescenter.

from the engagement department
As we wrap up this year of Temple’s programmatic life, there are two groups
of people who deserve special recognition. These groups launched two new
programs with us this year: Temple Connect and Age and Stage. To our
Engagement Co-Chairs, our Temple Connect Core Team and Coaches, our
Temple Connect Group Leaders, and our Age and Stage Roshim: Thank
you. Thank you for helping us learn and grow. Thank you for helping others
to experience meaning and inspiration. Thank you for your healing and for
your hope. You live the vision of this synagogue every day and we are only
great because of your time, passion, and energy. To all of our participants
in these groups this year—a special thanks to you too, for trusting in us and
each other to create an experience of inspiration and transformation.
We have only just begun but we’ve done so much already—here’s to
another great year ahead!
