AN ORDINANCE
COUNCILMEMBER MICHAEL
AN ORDINANCE TO DESIGNATE THE INTERSECTION OF ATLANTA
STUDENT BOULEVARD, SW AND WALNUT STREET, SW FLIPPER TEMPLE
AME SQUARE; AND FOR OTHER THE PURPOSES.
WHEREAS, Flipper Temple African Methodist Episcopal Church was founded by Reverend
C.D. Thornton in January 1920 on Fair Street, SW; and,
WHEREAS, Flipper Temple AME Church has served as a cornerstone to the surrounding
community, which includes the Atlanta University Center established in 1929; and,
WHEREAS, Flipper Temple AME Church has been integral to the Westside communities of
Atlanta offering spiritual sustenance and guidance to all those in need; and,
WHEREAS, Flipper Temple AME Church is a vital part of the history of the surrounding
university community; and,
WHEREAS, The Council recognizes the importance of preserving the history of the City of
Atlanta as well as the unique character of its many and varied neighborhoods.
NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA, as follows:
SECTION 1: That the intersection of Atlanta Student Boulevard, SW and Walnut Street, SW is
designated as Flipper Temple AME Square.
SECTION 2: That the Department of Public Works, Office of Transportation is authorized to
install street toppers at each corner of the intersection.
SECTION 3: That all ordinances and parts of ordinances in conflict herewith are
waived in this
instance only.
