In 2015, United Way of the Capital Region raised $11,263,220 to support
programs and services that address critical needs in our community –
especially those in the areas of health, education, income and basic
needs. Why these four areas? Because these are the building blocks for a
better life for us all.
Your investment in United Way of the Capital Region promotes physical
and emotional wellness, provides children with the tools they need to
succeed in school, helps families gain financial independence and gives
hope to victims of unexpected circumstances. Your gift helps make the

The mission of United Way of the Capital Region is to improve lives in Cumberland,
Dauphin and Perry counties by identifying the most pressing community needs,
finding solutions to those needs, and demonstrating how these solutions are making
a difference.

TOCQUEVILLE SOCIETY
United Way Worldwide created the United Way Tocqueville Society in 1984. Today, the Society is one of the
world’s most prestigious institutions for individuals who are passionate about improving peoples’ lives and
strengthening communities.
In 1987, United Way of the Capital Region created our local chapter of the Tocqueville Society. The Society is
comprised of community leaders who donate at least $10,000 to United Way on an annual basis.
2015 Tocqueville Society Highlights
Membership
In 2015, United Way of the Capital Region’s Tocqueville Society gained
20 new members, bringing the total membership in this elite society
to 208. Members contributed a remarkable $3,020,179, representing
27 percent of United Way’s total 2015 annual campaign. Special thanks
to Tocqueville Society Chair Greg Gunn and Tocqueville Society Vice
Chairs Diane Tokarsky and Stephen Moore.

Ordre de la Champions
Last year, United Way created a new level of giving for the Tocqueville
Society, Ordre de la Champions, that recognizes contributions of
$15,000 - $24,999. Twenty-seven donors stepped up to this giving level.

The Tocqueville Society Challenge Match, generously sponsored by the
Kline Foundation and the McCormick Family Foundation, continues to
support the Society’s membership. Nine new members took advantage
of the match program.
Events
In 2015, the Tocqueville Society Events Committee planned a fantastic
series of events that promoted camaraderie of philanthropy among
current and prospective members. Special thanks to Kristen Scofield
(chair) and committee members: Marion C. Alexander, Alice K. Angino,
Patricia Bucek, Tim Bunner, Jean Grandon, Trish Masterson, Ann
McGinnis, Jane Murray, Lisa Papa, Susan Roof, Susannah M. Rothman
and Karen Snider.
Event Highlights
• At the ninth annual Women of Tocqueville Society Luncheon members volunteered by packing snack bags for a local
after-school program. The event was sponsored by Wegmans.
• The 19th annual New Members’ Reception was hosted at the home of Marion C. and Bill Alexander and sponsored by
Roof Advisory Group, Inc.
• The eighth Tocqueville Society and Bridges Society Joint Event was held at Purcell Hall on the Milton Hershey School
campus and sponsored by Reynolds Enterprises and Gunn-Mowery, LLC.
• The 26th Tocqueville Society Humanitarian Award Reception honored Karen F. Snider. The event was held at the
Susquehanna Art Museum and sponsored by M&T Bank; Wilmington Trust, An M&T Affiliate; Buchanan Ingeroll &
Rooney PC; and Country Meadows Retirement Communities.

2015 Humanitarian Award Recipient: Karen F. Snider
United Way of the Capital Region’s
Tocqueville Society recognized Karen F.
Snider of Mechanicsburg with the 2015
Humanitarian Award for her lifetime of
inspirational leadership and commitment
to changing lives in our community.
For five decades, Karen has dedicated her
professional and volunteer life to missiondriven work. She has taken on the
challenges that appear insurmountable,
while supporting the routine work
necessary to get the job done.
Most recently, Karen has taken on the role
of executive director of the Harrisburg Public
Schools Foundation.
Karen F. Snider
Karen began her career as a caseworker
in Philadelphia, but soon moved to central Pennsylvania,
which she calls home. Her innovative and creative
leadership led to a distinguished career as a public
servant. Karen served as the Secretary of the
Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (then
the Department of Public Welfare) from 1991 to 1995.
Her work with Governor Casey included expansion of
Medicaid managed care, welfare reform and communitybased mental health services.
As Secretary, Karen helped found the Children’s
Cabinet. The program wove policy and program
development together toward an integrated system of
health, education and human services for families. The
Children’s Cabinet established Family Centers, which
were created without any new funds, and continue to
provide visible and tangible results today.
Past Award Recipients
Following her time as Secretary, Karen was the CEO of
Northwestern Human Services, Inc., which provides
programs and services in the areas of mental health,
mental retardation, drug and alcohol, children and
youth, juvenile justice and aging. Since 2002, Karen has
been president of Susquehanna Consulting and Financial
Group, Inc., where her expert knowledge of program
management and state government helps nonprofit
organizations provide services to the disenfranchised.

Karen has been involved with United Way for
25 years. She has served on United Way of
the Capital Region’s Board of Directors, Public
Policy Committee and Latino Task Force and
has helped lead the organization’s community
impact efforts. Currently, Karen is a member
of the United Way Foundation of the Capital
Region Board of Directors and Women’s
Leadership Network. She and her husband Jack
are members of the Tocqueville Society.
A hallmark of all recipients of this award is a
commitment to voluntary systems of human service,
which is exemplified in Karen’s dedication to the Rotary
Club of Harrisburg. She is the organization’s immediate
past president and current president of the Harrisburg
Rotary Foundation Board.
When the band and athletics activities in the Harrisburg
School District were in jeopardy of elimination because
of budget constraints, Karen did what she does best engage the community. At the time, Karen was a member
of the Harrisburg Public Schools Foundation Board of
Directors; she helped raise the needed funds to keep
these programs in place. In 2014, the Harrisburg School
District named a wing of the Camp Curtin School in her
honor. The Karen F. Snider Family and Student Health
Center provides school-based counseling services,
parenting classes and support for grandparents raising
their grandchildren.
In addition, Karen serves on The Foundation for
Enhancing Communities Board of Directors, the Women’s
Fund Initiative and chairs the Women in Philanthropy
Committee. She also serves on the board of directors
for the Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania, YWCA of
Greater Harrisburg and the Homeland Center.

La Société Nationale recognizes individuals who contribute
$100,000 to $249,999 annually to United Way of the Capital Region.
Drs. Neelima & Mukul Parikh Foundation
Riverside Anesthesia Associates, Ltd.
West Shore Anesthesia Associates
Drs. Neelima and Mukul Parikh have practiced anesthesiology since 1984 at West Shore Anesthesia
and Riverside Anesthesia Associates respectively. Mukul serves as president of the Dauphin County
Medical Society and founder/president of Operation Medical/Global Healthcare, a nonprofit group
of volunteers providing free surgical care around the world. Together, Neelima and Mukul have
participated in 30 volunteer surgical missions to India, Philippines, Thailand and Africa helping scores
of needy patients.
They are both active in the local Indian community where Neelima served as the first female president
of HARI Temple and as a board member. Mukul taught religion at the temple’s Sunday school for 25
years and coordinated the youth group for nearly 10 years. He previously served as the chair of the
board at HARI and president of the Asian Indian Association of Central Pennsylvania.
Neelima and Mukul received the International Voluntary Service Award from the Pennsylvania Medical
Society in 2014 and they received the Distinguished Community Service Award from the Asian Indian
Association of Central Pennsylvania in 2013.
In 2005, they established the Drs. Neelima & Mukul Parikh Foundation to support the many
educational, healthcare, religious and community service activities they ardently believe in.

La Société Nationale recognizes individuals who contribute
Hersha H. & Hasu P. Shah
Hersha Group
Hersha and Hasu Shah founded the Hersha Group of Companies in 1984. Over the years, they have
grown the company to be a nationally recognized leader in the hospitality industry whose shares are
traded on the The New York Stock Exchange.
Their true passion is philanthropy, and they believe the highest purpose they can serve is to give
back to their community. The Shahs have donated their time and money to numerous causes. In the
Harrisburg area, they have served on the boards of various charitable organizations focusing on
health care and community development, and endowed the Hersha H. and Hasu P. Shah Program of
Hospitality Management at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College. In their native India, they
have built hospitals and funded medical clinics to help underserved communities. In 2005, the couple
founded the Shree Krishna Foundation, a charitable trust whose goal is to restore eyesight to one
million disadvantaged blind people living in third-world countries.
In 2010, Hersha and Hasu were honored with the National United Way Tocqueville Society Award, the
highest honor for volunteers. They joined a distinguished list of previous recipients including former
Presidents Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter, as well as Bill Gates, Bob Hope, John Glenn and Henry
Ford, II. The Shahs are the first local recipients of this prestigious award.

CAPITAL CLUB
The Capital Club recognizes donors who contribute
$1,000 - $9,999 annually to United Way of the Capital Region’s campaign.
Donations from Capital Club members inspire others to join in providing hope and
opportunities to our friends and neighbors in need.
The program has the following levels of giving:
Diamond Level - $5,000 - $9,999
Gold Level - $2,500 - $4,999
Silver Level - $1,500 - $2,499
Bronze Level - $1,000 - $1,499
In 2015, 1,445 Capital Club donors contributed $2,336,828 to United Way of the
Capital Region. Capital Club donors represent 21 percent of all annual giving and
eight percent of all annual donors.

CORPORATE LEADERSHIP GIVING PROGRAM
The Corporate Leadership Giving Program, established in 1997,
is the keystone of United Way of the Capital Region’s leadership giving efforts.
Participating companies promote leadership giving in their workplaces. They are
leaders in their respective industries and in our community.
Organizations on the following pages worked with United Way staff and
volunteers to conduct a special solicitation effort of individuals who had the
means and interest, and who were identified as Capital Club prospects.
From their 2015 efforts, we recognize the following achievements:

WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP NETWORK
Ask the women of United Way of the Capital Region’s Women’s Leadership Network (WLN)
how they LIVE UNITED and they will tell you it’s through philanthropy and volunteerism.
2015 Highlights
Volunteering
In 2015, WLN celebrated 10 years of LIVING UNITED!
More than 750 members contributed an incredible
$1,200,000 to United Way. Members also spent time
volunteering and enjoyed networking with one another
through various engagement opportunities.
To celebrate WLN’s 10 year anniversary, members
completed 10 volunteer projects throughout our
community in 2015. Here are a few highlights:
• Packed Thanksgiving meals for more than 175
local families in need.
Community Leadership Events
• Organized Camp Curtain Academy’s library and
teacher resource room, and painted uplifting
murals for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.
• Collected and donated more than 1,000 items for
classroom kits for local schools.
Conversations with Women Who Make a Difference
events provided an opportunity for members to hear
from prominent women in our community and learn
how their contributions are making a difference by
listening to a recipient of a United Way-supported
service. Three events were held in 2015:
• The 10 Year Anniversary Celebration and New
Members’ Reception featured 2015 WLN Chair
Janice Snyder as well as previous WLN leaders
such as Carol Steinour Young and Jewel Cooper.
The event was held at The Vineyards at Hershey.
• The August event featured Dr. Sybil KnightBurney, superintendent of the Harrisburg School
District. Also featured were Damalia Brunson and
Kathy Anderson Martin from The Salvation Army
Harrisburg Capital City Region.
• The October event featured Christine Sears,
president and CEO of Penn National Insurance,
and Money in Your Pocket program volunteer
Elaine Brinley.

United Way of the Capital Region’s Bridges Society
connects the next generation of diverse leaders through
giving and volunteering.
2015 Highlights
2015 was a stellar year for Bridges Society with more than 640 members contributing over $960,000 to United
Way of the Capital Region’s annual campaign. Members also volunteered their time to make a difference in
the lives of kids in our community and enjoyed networking with one another through various engagement
opportunities.
Community Leadership Events
• A Bridges Breakfast event in the fall featured Michael Young, president and CEO of PinnacleHealth System.
• In August, Bridges Society held a networking event at The Millworks in Harrisburg. Members enjoyed
delicious farm to table food, tours of the artist’s studios and shared what they aspire for the Capital Region.
• The eighth Tocqueville Society and Bridges Society Joint Event was held in October at Milton Hershey
School’s Purcell Friendship Hall and featured socializing, refreshments and tours of the Dearden House. The
event was sponsored by Reynolds Enterprises and Gunn-Mowery, LLC.
Volunteering
• During United Way’s Annual Youth Day of Caring in April 2015, 30 Bridges members volunteered side-by-side
with approximately 185 local high school students to clean up City Island.
• Eighty Bridges members shared their love of reading with nearly 120 students from Downey and Ben Franklin
elementary schools during trips to Barnes & Noble in Camp Hill. Volunteers worked with students on a
scavenger hunt throughout the store and read with the children. Thanks to Enterprise Rent-A-Car, every child
was able to take home a book of their own.
