Capitol ceremony celebrates 2015-16
Wisconsin Title I Schools of Recognition
MADISON — State Superintendent Tony Evers congratulated Ridgeland Elementary and Almena Elementary for
being among 169 schools in the state that received Wisconsin Title I School of Recognition honors for the 2015-16
school year during a special March 14 ceremony at the State Capitol in Madison.
Evers welcomed Rachel Waite, Cari Schlosser and Jen Clemens to the recognition event. During the
ceremony, the state superintendent recognized nine High-Achieving schools and 26 High-Progress schools; 11
schools earned both High-Achieving and High-Progress honors. There were 117 Beating-the-Odds schools. Twelve
schools earned a School of Recognition award for five consecutive years.
“These awards recognize the work of students and their parents, along with teachers, school administrators,
and school staff members, to break the link between poverty and low academic achievement. These efforts will help
us ensure that every student graduates college and career ready,” Evers said.
“I see the great things that our staff members do for kids on a daily basis. It’s good to be recognized at
the state level as well. Our teachers are outstanding with academics and with life skills,” said Jennifer Clemens,
principal of Barron elementary schools. “Our teachers love what they do, and it shows!”

7th and 8th Grade Riverview Middle School Students
Celebrate Pi Day in their Math Classes
Please plan to dine at Culver’s in Rice Lake on
May 16th between 5-8 p.m.
In celebration of Pi day on March 14, the seventh and
eighth grade students at Riverview Middle School
participated in pi day activities during their math classes.
March 14 is chosen as the day to celebrate pi because
the numerical date, 3/14, represents the first 3 digits of
pi. This year was pi round-up day because on March 14,
2016, as the numerical date 3/14/16 represents the first
5 digits of pi, 3.14159 rounded-up to 3.1416. Students
were encouraged to memorize digits of pi and compete
for the honor of “Riverview Middle School’s Pi Wizard.”
Students were awarded fabulous circle prizes for reciting
digits of pi. The first place winner was Aaron Williams
for reciting 200 digits, second place winner was Sahur
Omar with 101 digits, third was Maslah Garad with 87,
fourth was Logan Janney with 59 and 5th place was
Ridwan Sharif reciting 54 digits. Pictured (left to right)
are the students that memorized and recited 25 or more
digits of pi with their prizes: (front) Abdullahi Garad,
Lainey Zurn, Ridwan Sharif, Maslah Garad, Aaron
Williams, Hunter Schultz. (back) Veronica Galetka,

accepting applications for 3-5 year olds for the 20162017 school year. The BAMS does not charge tuition
and offers 5-day programming (half-day for 3- and
4-year olds). The school is currently accepting
applications for 3-5 year olds. Students (ages 4-5) who
reside outside the Barron Area School District (BASD)
must fill out an open enrollment application by April 30 at

www.barron.k12.wi.us/schools/Montessori.cfm.
Located within the BASD’s Woodland School, the
Montessori public charter school was founded in 2007
and has grown from one classroom of 18 students to
the current enrollment of 71. Montessori education is
based on the principles established over 100 years ago
by Italian educator Maria Montessori. It focuses on the
idea of child-led learning in a controlled environment,
allowing students to choose meaningful work in a
systematic, yet independent fashion. Students develop
an intrinsic love of learning as they experience success
working with self-correcting materials designed to follow
natural patterns of brain development. Those interested
in the program are encouraged to set up an appointment
to observe a classroom by calling 715.537.5621 x358.

allowed students to look beyond just video games and
look into the world of coding, art, writing, app creation,

LEGO Education
In a special two-week project, students from the E1
Montessori classroom had the opportunity to work
with high school students during Resource time on
LEGO Education activities. LEGO Education has
activities for all grade levels in the areas of Math,
Social Studies, Science, and English Language
Arts. With the help and guidance of their high school
mentors, the elementary students used LEGOs to tell
stories, invent houses of the future, and discuss the
importance of community.
Students from Mrs. Mizer’s classroom made a mural
during Mrs. Vergin’s art class to decorate the wall in their
classroom. What an awesome job they did! Pictured left
