As you may know from our newsletter and Facebook postings, the summer months are compactly filled with outreach events throughout the East Bay. In particular, OEBGMC is represented at Pride events in high schools, retirement centers, and city centers. It is because of you, our patrons, that we are able to have such a profound and ongoing impact in the community. Thank you for making us the leading LGBT arts organization in the East Bay. Oakland–East Bay Gay Men’s Chorus is quickly establishing a newfound identity. As we strive for greater artistic excellence, healthier business practices, and more effective impact in the LGBT community through our art, we find ourselves being transformed. We are no longer your typical gay men’s chorus. We are spicier, as you may notice this evening. Tonight’s performance of Pleasure and Pain will demonstrate our innovation as we combine traditional concert programming of popular music with dramatic elements in a show-like fashion. This particular show was designed by our artistic committee and produced by our production team; it has never been performed publicly. By way of energetic singing, electric lighting and sound, and exciting musical selections, Pleasure and Pain will move OEBGMC from concert stage into musical theater! So sit back and enjoy the theater. The content of today’s program is sure to embrace the fringe. If you expect adult themes and hot choreography, you just might get some… wink, wink. In honor of the bicentennial of Giuseppe Verdi’s birth, we commissioned a world-premiere mashup of two opera excerpts and reinterpreted the message to tickle all… well, almost all… of our fantasies. I have a hunch that, whether you like pleasure, pain, or both, we will tickle a few of your fantasies as well! During the intermissions, we hope you will enjoy the food and beverage service as well as the array of auction items we have provided for your bidding pleasure and pain. May you get what you came here for! Remember your pain is our pleasure, and a little pain from your wallet goes a long way in impacting the LGBT community in the East Bay. In addition to directing the Oakland-East Bay Gay Men’s Chorus, OnQ and the Community Music School, Jeremiah Selvey also teaches Choir for Stagebridge Senior Theater and directs the choir program at Eden UCC in Hayward CA. Mr. Selvey was also recently appointed as Guest Conductor of Women Sing for the fall of 2013. Mr. Selvey grew up as a musician in Spain and in the United States. True to his upbringing, his musical career has followed an international path with multiple performances and tours in Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Italy, Spain, Venezuela, Mexico, England, Ireland, and Scotland. Mr. Selvey has had the privilege of studying with great conducting teachers, including Simon Carrington, Peter Phillips, Jerry Blackstone, Kent Hatteberg, Geoffrey Boers, Giselle Wyers, Steven Morrison, Steven Demorest, Robert Harris, and Eric Nelson. Prior to moving to sunny California, Jeremiah Selvey served as Guest Artistic Director for the men’s and women’s choirs of the Windy City Performing Arts and conducted several University of Washington ensembles, as well as community and church choirs throughout the greater Seattle area. During his tenure in Seattle, Mr. Selvey was active as both conductor and singer. Jeremiah guest conducted the Seattle Men’s Chorus (under Dennis Coleman) in two shows and was integral to its Vocal Coach Program throughout the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 seasons. He has co-directed the summer barbershop programs of the Seattle SeaChordsmen (2011-2012) and their Capture Your Voice Program (Fall 2011). Mr. Selvey also served as the assistant conductor of the Magnolia Chorale (2010-2011) under Dr. Julia Tai. As a singer, Mr. Selvey is active as a countertenor and baritone soloist, having recently performed as alto soloist in the Bach Magnificat and as a baritone soloist for a work commissioned for women’s choir and his voice. A doctoral candidate at the University of Washington in Seattle, Jeremiah Selvey has assisted in teaching undergraduate and graduate conducting and choral technique courses. He conducted several groups, including the UW Men’s Glee Club and UW Summer Chorale and served as assistant conductor to the top choral ensembles: University Chorale (under Giselle Wyers) and University Chamber Singers (under Geoffrey Boers). His performance of “In Lumine” by Guggenheim-winning composer Huck Hodge was well-received by composer, Chamber Singers, and audience alike. Mr. Selvey’s dissertation is a comparative examination of perspectives on conductor and choral expression among seasoned choral conductors, experienced choir members, and average audience members. The dissertation also explores the implications of these perspectives on the pedagogy of conducting; rehearsal methodology and technique; and audience engagement and education. Jeremiah Selvey is also active as a festival clinician/adjudicator and researcher in the field of choral conducting. His most recent research interests span the fields of audience engagement and expressivity in choral conducting. His co-authored paper “The Effect of Conducting Expressivity on Choral Ensemble Evaluations” has been presented both nationally and internationally, including at the joint International Conference for Music Perception and Cognition & European Society for the Cognitive Sciences of Music (ICMPC-ESCOM) conference in Thessaloniki, Greece in July 2012. page 16 l Pleasure and Pain l G ra c e Re n a u d G ra c e Re n a u d j o i n e d t h e a r t i s t i c s t a f f a s Principal Accompanist in 2012. After all, we can attest that we certainly went to great “pains” putting it all together for you. Tonight represents both the end of our current concert season and the beginning of our upcoming season entitled and entirely devoted to, “Gay Men Exploring Black Culture through Choral Music”. We are anticipating an exciting year filled with musical exploration and education for you, our audience and ourselves. Throughout the last 14 years of existence, OEBGMC has been growing and maturing organizationally. Much of the administrative, marketing, fundraising, outreach, and operations work is completed by a very small paid staff as well as a larger singing and non-singing member force of volunteers. Our hope is to increase both our membership and staff over the next year. After receiving several generous major gifts, auctions, and outreach performance fees and applying for grants, we have been taking steps toward expanding our organization’s budget. One of our main goals is to hire an executive director for the chorus, who will coordinate all of the various committees and allow the singing members to concentrate more on musical rehearsal and performance so that we can continue bringing great music to the East Bay. To accomplish this goal, we are asking individuals, organizations, companies and corporations to join our OEBGMC family of supporters. We would like you to consider helping us have a greater impact with our performances next season by underwriting some of the objectives we have set for ourselves over the next year: 1. Hiring of an executive director - $50,000 2. Commissioning fees for our Black music season - $15,000 3. Guest Artist Fees for soloists, choirs, bands, and vocal groups who will aid us in gaining a better understanding of Black music - $10,000 4. Fees for choir clinicians who specialize in the performance practice of Black music styles - $5,000 5. Fees for consultants to help us understand and access the culture and history of our explorations in Black music - $5,000 6. Costs of targeted outreach to the LGBT African-American Community all around the East Bay - $5,000 Won’t you consider sponsoring us or making a donation to our organization today? Please email Joe Engle at [email protected] to discuss further what might be the best fit for you. Please enjoy the show, the extra goodies, silent auction, raffle, food and drink. Sincerely, Brad NiessJoe Engle President of the Board Vice President of the Board Oakland-East Bay Gay Men’s Chorus Revenue Chair page 24 l Pleasure and Pain l Oakland-East Bay Gay Men’s Chorus Announces Its 2013-2014 Season Gay Men Exploring Black Cultures through Choral Music The Oakland-East Bay Gay Men’s Chorus will dedicate the 20132014 concert season to engage with choral music of Black cultures, from Spirituals to Gospel, from Ragtime to R&B, from William Grant Still to Duke Ellington to Thelonious Monk. We are excited to expand our knowledge of music and culture by embarking on this adventure. Here is where we expect the journey to take us: We will continue to engage and entertain our audience through the amaz ing energy and diversity of Black music. We will bring to light lesser-known or under-appreciated Black choral music. We will grow in love for and ability to perform a variety of Black choral genres, including the cultures from which they originate. We will forge partnerships with musical groups across traditional boundaries. We will provide opportunities for our singers and audiences to process how such interactions change who we are, how we think, and what we do. We will further the LGBT cause in the Black community. Join us for each of our concerts next season. Updated information to the following shows will be posted on our website at www.oebgmc. org.
