about flavour. For the freegan, who scours the suburbs looking for fruit trees whose bounty is overlooked by others. For
the cook, who wants their dishes to resonate with flavours borne from their own hands.
Anyone can make pear and cardamom jam to brighten morning toast or beetroot relish to use all year. Lunches made with
apple cider mustard are always the better for the addition. A bowl of ice cream is transformed with a drizzle of homemade
gooseberry and sour cherry syrup.
Use this book as your launching pad, then adjust the combinations to suit the place you call home. It's all about
harnessing the harvest, making real food from scratch and feeling great about what you feed your family and friends.

Description
When Wayne and Kelly Maines adopted identical twin boys, they thought their lives were complete. But it wasn't long
before they noticed a marked difference between Jonas and his brother, Wyatt. Jonas preferred sports and trucks and
many of the things little boys were 'supposed' to like; but Wyatt liked princess dolls and dress-up and playing Little
Mermaid. By the time the twins were toddlers, confusion over Wyatt's insistence that he was female began to tear the
family apart. In the years that followed, the Maineses came to question their long-held views on gender and identity, to
accept and embrace Wyatt's transition to Nicole, and to undergo an emotionally wrenching transformation of their own
that would change all their lives forever.
Becoming Nicole chronicles a journey that could have destroyed a family but instead brought it closer together. It's the
story of a mother whose instincts told her that her child needed love and acceptance; of a conservative army-veteran
father who overcame his deepest fears to become a vocal advocate for trans rights; of a loving brother who bravely stuck
by his twin sister; and of a town forced to confront its prejudices.
Ultimately, Becoming Nicole is the story of an extraordinary girl who fought for the right to be herself.

Description
We expect an enormous amount from our teenage girls. Bombarded with descriptions of the competitive, global
environment awaiting their daughters, today's parents can suffer intense anxiety about how to help.
Our culture has stopped talking about the normal challenges that have always been part of adolescent development many parents mistake every snag for a crisis. It's up to parents to guide their daughters into adulthood, but, while
academic psychologists and theorists debate various stages of normal development, we have been left without an
overarching picture of what to expect when expecting a teenager, until now.
In Untangled, world authority and clinical psychologist Lisa Damour provides an accessible, detailed, comprehensive
guide to parenting teenage girls. Damour's starting point is the idea of strands by which girls' development can be
measured, dividing the transition from childhood through adolescence to adulthood into seven, easily recognisable,
phases. Girls naturally develop at different rates, typically on more than one front, and the sequence of transition will be
unique to every girl.
In this book, each chapter combines a phase, such as 'parting with childhood', 'harnessing emotions', and 'caring for
herself', with hints and tips for both parents and their daughters, as well as a 'when to worry' section. Damour writes
sympathetically and with clear explanations to provide a practical and helpful guide to knowing what to look out for, and
how to deal with the phases as they happen. Untangled is a wonderful reference point for any parent, and one to share
with their teenage girls too.

Vino Business: The Cloudy World of French Wine
Isabelle Saporta
A shocking expose of France's wine industry by an acclaimed French journalist, Vino Business reveals the bigmoney deals, speculation, and shady practices that go on even in many of the most prestigious chateaux in
Bordeaux and beyond.
Sales points
• The publication of this book in English will cause controversy within the wine world and there is sure to be media as a
result. Wine Spectator, the Daily Mail and many wine websites have already written short pieces discussing the book
after it was published in France
• Saporta touches on a wide variety of issues, including wine labelling, the use of pesticides in viticulture, additives in
wine, the changing investors in France's wine industry, the influence of critics, the relevance of big-money galas and
backroom deals
• Written in a very readable style
• Will appeal to readers of The Billionaire's Vinegar and The House of Mondavi and fans of films like Mondovino, Bottle
Shock, and Somm, and of course will be a must-buy for those seriously interested in wine
• 'Gossip as poisonous as pesticides, anonymous informants, rampant greed...the latest primetime TV drama? No, it's
just St.-Emilion... A new book, Vino Business, by French journalist Isabelle Saporta, has caused a firestorm for its
criticism of the French wine trade...If it's causing this much uproar...it's because she put her finger on the sore spot.' Wine Spectator
Description
For centuries a bastion of tradition and the jewel in the crown of French viticulture, Bordeaux has in recent years become
dogged by controversy, particularly regarding the 2012 classification of the wines of St.- Emilion, the most prestigious
appellation of Bordeaux's right bank. St.-Emilion is an area increasingly dominated by big international investors,
especially from China, who are keen to speculate on the area's wines and land, some of whose value has increased
tenfold in the last decade alone.

In the controversial 2012 classification, certain chateaux were promoted to a more prestigious class because of insider
deals that altered the scoring system for the classification of wines into premier crus and grand crus. This system now
takes into account the facilities of each chateau's tasting room, the size of its warehouse, and even the extent of its
parking lot. The quality of the wine counts for just 30% of the total score for the wines of the top ranking, those deemed
premier grand cru classe A.
In Vino Business, Saporta shows how back-room deals with wine distributors, multinational investors like the luxury
company LVMH, and even wine critics, have fundamentally changed this ancient business. Saporta also investigates
issues of wine labelling and the use of pesticides, and draws comparisons to Champagne, Burgundy and the rest of the
wine world. Based on two years of research and reporting, Vino Business draws back the curtain on the secret world of
Bordeaux, a land ever more in thrall to the grapes of wealth.

Their Promised Land: My Grandparents in Love and War
Ian Buruma
Ian Buruma's moving and personal account of his grandparents lives in England during both world wars, as
told through their letters.
Sales points
• Year Zero sold 12,500 copies in its first outing and was extremely well reviewed. It was one of Amazon.co.uk's Top
Ten History Books of the Year and was also selected as a New York Times Book of the Year
• Very commercial subject: Their Promised Land covers life in England during WWI and WWII and deals with family
history
• Ian Buruma is highly respected in literary circles and this book promises to bring him a whole new audience
• Murder in Amsterdam (Atlantic, 2006) was shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize and sold 20,000 copies in the UK;
Occidentalism (Atlantic, 2004) was shortlisted for the Orwell Prize
Description
Ian Buruma's grandparents, Bernard Schlesinger and Winifred Regensburg (Winnie & Bun), wrote to each other regularly
over their sixty years together. The first letters were written in 1915, when Bernard was still at school at Uppingham and
Win was taking music lessons in Hampstead. The last ones were written in the 1970s. Most of them are love letters,
written from the trenches in France in World War One, from Oxford and Cambridge in the 1920s, from Germany in the
1930s, from Norway and India in World War Two. Often, especially when Bernard was away for three years in India as a
doctor in the British Army, they wrote every day, knowing it would take weeks, and sometimes months to reach the other
side.
Their letters are a priceless record of an assimilated Jewish family living in England throughout the upheavals of the
twentieth century and a moving portrait of a loving couple separated by war. By using their own words, Ian Buruma tells
their story and embarks on a personal journey that reveals his own family history.

The Book of the People: How to Read the Bible
A. N. Wilson
From one of our leading social and cultural historians comes a dazzling and original exploration of how, and
why, we should still be reading the Bible, even if we no longer believe.
Sales points
• A. N. Wilson enjoys a large and dedicated readership
• Religion still plays a vital role in our public debate, and influences debate in all areas of public life. The Bible and its
tenets therefore remain key to understanding our society
• The Bible is the single most influential text of all time, and in The Book of the People A. N. Wilson reminds us of its
continued significance and relevance
• This unique blend of the deeply personal and the philosophical represents A. N. Wilson at his most immediate and
accessible
•
Description
A. N. Wilson has been thinking about the Bible, and reading it, since he read theology for a year at university. Martin
Luther King was 'reading the Bible' when he started the Civil Rights movement. When Michelangelo painted the fresco
cycles in the Sistine Chapel, he was 'reading the Bible'. In The Book of the People A. N. Wilson explores how readers
and thinkers have approached the Bible, and how it might be read today. Charting his own relationship with the Bible
over a lifetime of writing, Wilson argues that it remains relevant even in a largely secular society, as a philosophical work,
a work of literature and a cultural touchstone that the western world has answered to for nearly two thousand years. He
challenges the way fundamentalists - whether believers or non-believers - have misused the Bible, either by neglecting
and failing to recognize its cultural significance, or by using it as a weapon against those with whom they disagree.

All Behind You, Winston: The Secret Life of Churchill's War Ministry
Roger Hermiston
All Behind You, Winston will tell the story of the most remarkable gathering of leaders in modern British history:
the War Ministry that saw the country through its darkest - and finest - hour.
Sales points
• This will be the first book to tell the story of this remarkable group of statesmen, many of whom are deserving of
biographies in their own right
• It will approach the story of Churchill in WWII from a wholly new direction, revealing the extent to which his position
and decisions were dependent on the strengths of choices of others
• This will be a portmanteau biography, with each chapter told from the perspective of a particular minister, thus
ensuring an accessible, personality driven narrative throughout
• The book's focus will have appeal beyond the largely male readership of more traditional 'military' histories
Description
When Winston Churchill became Prime Minister on 10 May 1940, it was not with the unanimous support of Westminster
or the country. For many, Lord Halifax was the obvious choice to succeed Neville Chamberlain, and Churchill s grasp of
the Home Front appeared uncertain at best. He assembled around him, however, a Cabinet of all the talents ; which
would variously mobilise, arm, feed, fund, shelter, evacuate, heal and, ultimately, save Britain. Among these remarkable
men and women were Churchill s rivals Lord Halifax and Sir Stafford Cripps, the loyal and dogged Clement Attlee,
titanic egos such as Lord Beaverbrook and John Reith, the popular department store owner Lord Woolton (the man who
kept the nation fed), the propagandist and playboy Duff Cooper, and many of the statesmen who would go on to build the
New Jerusalem in peacetime. By 1945 they had not only steered the country to victory, they had also ensured Churchill s
inviolable position in our national myth an outcome that had seemed far from likely five years earlier. In a series of
character-driven chapters, Roger Hermiston, a former deputy editor on Radio 4 s Today and the author of The Greatest
Traitor, will tell the behind-closed-doors story of the key figures and key ministries, delving deep into the archives to bring
to life a Cabinet that was both the brain and the conscience of the nation.

Where can Londoners and visitors find quiet places to meet and talk?
London is an exciting place to be, but not everyone wants to be in a noisy environment listening to loud music. Perhaps
they want to be somewhere where they can read a book, or sit and linger for a while. Many visitors to the capital long to
discover places off the beaten track - find a delightful garden to sit in or a tree-lined walk by a river. Busy Londoners are
often looking for somewhere to go which is an alternative to lively venues; a place where things are understated rather
than grabbing their attention.

American Muscle Cars: A Full-Throttle History
Randy Leffingwell

• Muscle cars are one of Motorbooks' top five best-selling subjects. Muscle titles published by Motorbooks over the past

• Muscle car fans gather around dedicated magazine and websites and are easily reached in our marketing efforts
Description
This is the muscle car history to own--a richly illustrated chronicle of America's greatest high-performance cars, told from
their 1960s beginning through the present day!
In the 1960s, three incendiary ingredients--developing V-8 engine technology, a culture consumed by the need for speed,
and 75 million baby boomers entering the auto market-- exploded in the form of the factory muscle car. The resulting
vehicles, brutal machines unlike any the world had seen before or will ever see again, defined the sex, drugs, and rock 'n'
roll generation.
American Muscle Cars chronicles this tumultuous period of American history through the primary tool Americans use to
define themselves: their automobiles. From the street- racing hot rod culture that emerged following World War II through
the new breed of muscle cars still emerging from Detroit today, this book brings to life the history of the American muscle
car.
When Pontiac's chief engineer, John Z. DeLorean, and his team bolted a big-inch engine into the division's intermediate
chassis, they immediately invented the classic muscle car. In those 20 minutes it took Bill Collins and Russ Gee to bolt a
389 ci V-8 engine into a Tempest chassis they created the prototype for Pontiac's GTO--and changed the course of
automotive history. From that moment on, American performance cars would never be the same.

Oxford, 1862. As Mary Prickett takes up her post as governess to the daughters of the Dean of Christ Church, she is

the precocious Alice Liddell.
When Mary meets Charles Dodgson, the Christ Church mathematics tutor, at a party at the Deanery, she wonders if he
may be the person to transform her life. Flattered by his attentions, Mary begins to believe that she could be more than
just an overlooked, dowdy governess.
One sunny day, as Mary chaperones the Liddells on a punting trip, Mr Dodgson tells the story of Alice's Adventures in
Wonderland. But Mary is determined to become Mr Dodgson's muse - and will turn all the lives around her topsy-turvy in

The Senility of Vladimir P
Michael Honig
As provocative and spiky as Look Who's Back, Michael Honig's The Senility of Vladimir P is a strangely
moving, blackly funny and frankly brilliant calling to account of Vladimir Putin, of power and greed, and of our
own moral complicity.
Sales points
• Devilishly does for Putin what Timur Vermes' Look Who's Back did for Hitler
• The world's media is currently fixated on Russia as it teeters drunkenly on the brink
• A bitingly funny, vodka-soaked metaphor for how the giant republic has been brought so close to the edge
• Challenging us to feel empathy for a man who probably deserves none, former doctor Honig writes clear-sightedly and
poignantly about the vagaries of dementia
• Hard-hitting and provocative, The Senility of Vladimir P will generate controversial discussion, reviews and counterreviews
Description
Set 20-odd years from now, this is the story of a senile Vladimir Putin, ensconced and forgotten in his dacha, served by a
small coterie of house staff. His nurse, charged with round- the-clock care, is blissfully unaware that his colleagues are
using their various positions to skim money, in extraordinarily creative ways, from the top of their employer's seemingly
inexhaustible riches. But when a family tragedy means that the nurse suddenly needs to find kopecs fast, the dacha's
chef lets him in on the secret world of backhanders and bribes going on around him. Yet nurses are incorruptible; signees
to the Hippocratic Oath. He wouldn't steal from his ailing patient. Would he..?

Description
Following a long absence spent in New York, Elaine Nichols returns to her childhood home to live with her invalid father
and his geriatric Alsatian dog. The house backing on to theirs is sold and as she watches the old furniture being removed,
she is taken back to a summer in the 1970s when she was almost sixteen and this small out-of-town estate was an
enclave for women and children while the men are mysterious shadows who leave every day for the outside world.
The women are isolated but keep their loneliness and frustrations hidden behind a veneer of suburban respectability.
When an American divorcee and her daughter move into the estate this veneer begins to crack. The women learn how to
socialise, how to drink martinis, how to care less about their wifely and maternal duties.
While the women are distracted, Elaine and her friends find their own entry into the adult world. The result is a tragic
event that will mark the rest of Elaine's life and be the cause of her long and guilt-ridden exile.
Insightful and full of suspense, this is an uncompromising portrayal of the suburbs and the cruelties brought about by the
demands of respectability.

Description
This is a woman as a mother, daughter, wife, spectator, lover, mistress. Observer and commentator. Actor and reactor.
Dressed up bright as a child or submerged in the grey elegance of Paris, she shifts readily between roles, countries, and
languages. Skilled and and successful, she controls how much she cares. Yet as every new woman emerges and every
new story is told, each with a sharper, more deadpan, more aching simplicity, the calm surfaces of Joanna Walsh's
Vertigo shatter, pulling us deep into the terror that underlies everyday life.
About the Author
Joanna Walsh is a writer and illustrator. Her writing has appeared in Granta, Narrative, and Guernica and has been
anthologised in Best European Fiction 2015, Best British Short Stories 2014 and elsewhere. A story collection, Fractals,
was published in 2013, and her non-fiction book Hotel was published in 2015. She created and runs the Twitter hashtag

Aziz and his older brother Ali live in a village amid the pine forests and endless mountains of eastern Afghanistan. There
is no school, but their mother teaches them to read and write, and once a month sends the boys on a two-day journey to
the bazaar. They are poor, but inside their mud-walled home, the family has stability, love, and routine. When a convoy of
armed men arrives in the village one day, their parents disappear and their world is shattered. In order to survive Aziz
must join the Special Lashkar, a US-funded militia always hungry for Afghan recruits. No longer a boy, but not yet a man,
he departs for the untamed border. Trapped in a conflict both savage and entirely contrived, Aziz struggles to understand
his place. Will he embrace the brutality of war or leave it behind, and risk placing his brother - and a young woman he
comes to love - in jeopardy? Elliot Ackerman served five tours of duty in Afghanistan and Iraq, and has written a gripping,
morally complex debut novel, an astonishing feat of empathy and imagination about boys caught in a deadly conflict.

The Flight
Gaito Gazdanov
First English translation of this novel by the author of The Spectre of Alexander Wolf
Sales points
• A dramatic examination of love and relationships, set in Paris, the French Riviera and London
• Has distinct echoes of Tolstoy's Anna Karenina and Thornton Wilder's 1927 international bestseller, The Bridge of
San Luis Rey
• 'The Gazdanov revival ... is nothing short of a literary event.' - Times Literary Supplement
• 'A fascinating writer.' - Irish Times
Description
While summering on the French Riviera, the young Seryozha secretly becomes the lover of the much older Liza - who is

studies at university in London. When he finds out about their affair, Seryozha's father attempts to convince Liza to leave
his son, for the sake of the boy's own happiness. She finally gives in - but a sudden, fatal catastrophe changes
everything...
Gazdanov's second novel is proof of his wide-ranging talents: originally written before his celebrated noir experiments
The Spectre of Alexander Wolf and The Buddha's Return, The Flight blends psychological drama, illicit romance and
moments of both comedy and lyricism into a modernist take on the traditional Russian nineteenth-century realist novel
epitomised by Tolstoy.
About the Author
Gaito Gazdanov (1903-1971) joined the White Army aged just sixteen and fought in the Russian Civil War. Exiled in Paris
from the 1920s onwards, he eventually became a nocturnal taxi-driver and quickly gained prominence on the literary
scene as a novelist, essayist, critic and short-story writer, and was greatly admired by Maxim Gorky, among others.

A Dance with Jane Austen
Susannah Fullerton and Deirdre Le Faye
Drawing on contemporary accounts and illustrations, and a close reading of the novels as well as Austen's
correspondence, Susannah Fullerton takes the reader through all the stages of a Regency Ball as Jane Austen
and her characters would have known it.
Sales points
• Brings a Regency ball and its social context to life, as Jane Austen and her characters would have experienced it
• Includes sections on the arrival of the invitation, learning dance steps, shopping for a new outfit, and arranging
transport
Description
Jane Austen loved to put on her satin slippers with shoe-roses, her white gloves and muslin gown, and go off for an
evening of fun at the Basingstoke assemblies. The Bennet girls share their creator's delight and go off joyfully to dance,
and of course to meet future husbands.
Her subjects learn their steps, dress in readiness, find transport to convey them to a ball, choose between public and
private balls, worry over a shortage of men, prefer a cotillion to a quadrille, talk and flirt with their partners, sustain
themselves with supper, fall in love, and then go home to talk it all over at the end.
About the Author

• The first book on this subject - essential for a rich understanding of Austen's life and work
• Draws on previously unpublished Austen family manuscripts, which provide particular and unique information
• Richly illustrated with contemporary depictions of country folk, landscapes and animals
Description
Jane Austen lived for nearly all her life in two Hampshire villages: for 25 years in her birthplace of Steventon, and then for
the last 8 years of her life in Chawton, during which latter period she wrote and published her great novels. While there
are plenty of books describing her periods of urban life in Bath, Southampton and London, and the summer holidays in
Lyme Regis and other West Country seaside resorts, no consideration has been given to this rural background to her life.
Her father was not only the rector of Steventon but a farmer there as well, managing a property of some 200 acres. Her
brother Edward, in addition, was a large landowner, holding the three estates of Godmersham in Kent, Steventon and
Chawton in Hampshire. Agriculture in all its aspects was even more important to Jane than clerical life or the naval
careers of her younger brothers.

B Biography/autobiography
BG Biography: General
(NZ$36.99)
This book fills a gap in the Austen family background, discussing the state of agriculture in general in the south of England
during the wartime conditions which lasted for most of Jane Austen's life, and considering in particular the villages and
their inhabitants, the weather conditions, field crops, farm and domestic animals, and the Austens' household economy
and rural way of life. All appear in Austen's letters, and appear also unobtrusively in her novels, lending that air of
verisimilitude for which her works are famous. Apart from these obvious sources, there are other Austen family
manuscripts, as yet unpublished, which provide particular and unique information. Richly illustrated with contemporary
depictions of country folk, landscapes and animals, Jane Austen and Country Life conjures up a world which has
vanished more thoroughly than the familiar Regency townscapes of Bath or London, but which is no less important to an
understanding of this most treasured writer's life and work.
About the Author
Deirdre La Faye is an expert on Jane Austen, and the author of several books about her, including the definitive
biography Jane Austen: A Family Record for the British Library, and a completely new edition of Jane Austen's letters.
She lives in Portishead, North Somerset.

Description
Enjoy Jane Austen's mastery of irony, dialogue and realism in this unforgettable love story.
One of the most beloved books of all time, Pride and Prejudice-Jane Austen's most popular book- has been resonating
with readers since it was first published in 1813 and has been adapated many times for television, movies, and books.
When headstrong and independent Elizabeth Bennet, one of five sisters, is required to find a wealthy husband, her
encounter with the arrogant Mr. Darcy leads to one of the most entertaining and satisfying courtships ever imagined.
Beyond the romance, Pride and Prejudice is a book full of humor and wit that is also a commentary on upper-class social
manners at the turn of the nineteenth century.
Even though it is concerned with love and marriage, the novel is a rejection of Romanticism, a popular way of imagining
the world at that time. Austen preferred to highlight the rational abilities of her characters and not portray them as
completely controlled by their emotions. However, the people in the book aren't robots, and Austen shows universal
situations in a perfectly clear light--embarrassment when someone is foolish, the nervous feeling of falling in love, and the
chagrin caused by making a big mistake.

Thoreau. Nevertheless, her family suffered severe financial difficulties and Alcott worked to help support the family from
an early age. She began to receive critical success for her writing in the 1860s.

Description
Enjoy the romance and wit of the charming Dashwood sisters in Jane Austen's classic tale Sense and Sensibility.
Jane Austen's debut novel, Sense and Sensibility has been resonating with readers since it was first published in 1811
and has been made into a number of adaptations.
The Dashwood sisters couldn't be more different. While Elinor lives her life in a reasonable manner, Marianne tends to
make decisions following her heart. But when it comes to finding a husband, the sisters realize, through much trial and
error, that a combination of their personalities is ideal when it comes to finding true happiness. Beyond the romance,
Sense and Sensibility is chock-full of humor and wit that is also a commentary on British middle-class society at the turn
of the nineteenth century.
Austen's mastery of irony, dialogue, and realism support character development and make Sense and Sensibility a pure
pleasure to read. Complete and unabridged, this elegantly designed, clothbound edition features an elastic closure and a
new introduction by Christina Bartolomeo.

About the Author
JANE AUSTEN was born in 1775 at Steventon, Hampshire. She was the seventh child of the local rector and her life, by
modern standards, was uneventful. In 1801 she moved with her parents to Bath but returned to Hampshire when her
father died, settling in the village of Chawton. She remained there until 1817, when she moved to Winchester to be within
easy reach of her doctor. She died that year, at age forty-one, and is buried in Winchester Cathedral, which also contains
a plaque in honor of her memory. Four of her novels were published anonymously in her lifetime; two more, one of which
was Persuasion, appeared posthumously.
CHRISTINA BARTOLOMEO is the author of three novels: Cupid and Diana; The Side of the Angels; and Snowed In.

Sales points
• Elegantly designed, this cloth bound hardcover edition is slip cased and features a ribbon marker and period styling a must have for any 'Janeite'
• Also included is an original introduction that provides the reader with enlightening information on Jane Austen's life
and works
Description
Jane Austen revolutionized the literary romance, using it as a platform from which to address issues of gender politics and
class consciousness among the British middle-class of the late eighteenth century. With witty, unflinching morality, Austen
portrays English middle-class life as the eighteenth century came to a close and the nineteenth century began. Austin's
heroines find happiness in many forms, each of the novels is a story of love and marriage - marriage for love, financial
security and for social status.
In a publishing career that spanned less than ten years her work brought her little personal fame and only a few positive
reviews during her lifetime. It wasn't until the 1940s that she became widely accepted in academia as a great English
writer. The second half of the 20th century saw a proliferation of Austen scholarship and the emergence of a fan culture.
Austen's works continue to influence the course of the novel even as they charm readers today. Complete and
unabridged this beautiful volume is magnificent.

About the Author
JANE AUSTEN (1775 -- 1817) was an English novelist whose works of romantic fiction, set among the British middle
class, earned her a place as one of the most widely read writers in English literature. Although Jane Austen wrote from
her teenage years into her thirties her most notable writing was done from 1811 until 1816. During this period she wrote
and extensively revised three major novels and began a fourth, Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813),
Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma (1816). She wrote two additional novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, both
published posthumously in 1818, and began a third, which was eventually titled Sanditon, but she died before completing
it at the age of 41.

Would he..?

• Murder in Amsterdam (Atlantic, 2006) was shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize and sold 20,000 copies in the UK;

The Black Mirror: Fragments of an Obituary for Life
Raymond Tallis
A deeply moving and startlingly original celebration of everyday life, by one of Britain's leading thinkers and
writers.
Sales points
• The Black Mirror was picked by the Guardian as a literary highlight of 2015
• Tallis is a renowned polymath: he was listed by the Independent in 2007 as one of fifty and in 2004 Prospect
magazine voted him one of Britain's top public intellectuals
• For fans of Alain de Botton, Irvin D. Yalom, Stephen Grosz and Oliver Sacks
Description
Inspired by E. M. Forster's thought that 'Death destroys a man but the idea of it saves him', The Black Mirror takes death
as an external viewpoint from which we may see our lives more clearly.
Raymond Tallis looks back on his world from the standpoint of his future corpse. He reflects on the senses that opened up
his late world, the elements they reveal, the distances, divisions and intimacies of space, the multifarious activities that
occupied his days, his possessions, his utterances, his relationship to others, the extinguished flame that was his self, his
journey towards the end, and his after-life either side of the grave.
About the Author
Raymond Tallis trained as a doctor before going on to become Professor of Geriatric Medicine at the University of
Manchester. He was elected Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences for his research in clinical neuroscience. He
retired from medicine in 2006 to become a full-time writer and has written over a dozen books including, most recently,
The Kingdom of Infinite Space, Michelangelo's Finger, Aping Mankind and In Defence of Wonder. In 2009, The
Economist's Intelligent Life magazine named him as one of the top living polymaths in the world.
