DIRECTOR’S NOTE
‘It’s like a magnet out here’
We have the best of local, national and international work
available right on your doorstep, from the Dublin Theatre Festival
to the best in theatre as Gaeilge, from the aerial wizardry of
Tumble Circus to Ballymun’s ‘Otherworld Festival’, from ‘The
Man in the Woman’s Shoes’ to the sounds of Jack L, from the
best in children’s theatre to the beautiful work of Cecilia Moore
and Elke Thönnes in our gallery.
But axis is not just about what goes on our stage. It is about
getting involved in your creative side, participating in the arts,
learning something new, challenging yourself and having fun.
We offer projects, and opportunities for people of all ages and
levels. Classes in a range of art forms, residency opportunities,
writing and dance initiatives, ‘Sing’ with Chamber Choir Ireland,
young people developing new music and videos, pop up arts
events in our café and later on this year we will be launching a
new patron’s scheme ‘axis Family’ where you will be able to get
more involved and help us make new work happen.
So no excuses, we are excited about what is in store over the
coming months and are looking forward to welcoming you
through our doors, to see a show, rehearse in our music rooms,
avail of our crèche, meet in our meeting rooms, have lunch in
our café, come and take your place.

WEIGHING IN BY GER GALLAGHER
Dates: 17th – 19th Sept Time: 8pm Tickets: €15/12 By: Cailín Deas Productions
The Easi-Slim diet clinic in Clones town
hall has just signed up a new member — upwardly mobile Val McGowan has cruised
into town in her soft top sports car. Val has
reached her target weight and has only
signed up to maintain, and brag about
the four stone she’s lost. Breda has been
attending Easi-Slim meetings for quite
some time but just can’t manage to reduce
her waistline — until Val comes along and
whips her into shape. Breda becomes a
disciple of the high-priestess of low-carbs
and is bowled over by just how fabulous Val
really is. However, when Val’s mask begins
to slip, Breda is reminded that things aren’t
always what they appear to be. ‘Weighing In’
is a fast paced comedy about life, love and
dieting — and how we all need to adjust the
scales to find the right balance. Don’t miss our
dinner theatre option for this show. Eat what
you want and laugh the pounds off after!

AFTER SARAH MILES
BY MICHAEL HILLIARD MULCAHY
Dates: 25th & 26th Sept Time: 8pm
Tickets: €18/14 By: Gallarus Productions
THEATRE
After a lifetime of wrestling with the tides, fisherman Bobeen
finds it hard to face the sea again. But the discovery he made
in the mouth of the harbour almost thirty years ago keeps
calling him back. This time it will connect him to what he
thought was lost and gone forever.
‘After Sarah Miles’ follows Bobeen’s journey from 1969 to
the present day; from the moment he has his first drink as
a fourteen year old boy on the set of ‘Ryan’s Daughter’, to
a blossoming crush which takes his life in an entirely new
direction. Don Wycherley gives a towering performance in this
acclaimed play, transporting the audience into a world that is
at the same time epic and ordinary.

DICKIE ROCK
Dates: 3rd Oct Time: 8pm
Tickets: €22 /18 By: Jackie Johnston
One of Ireland’s most famous sons, Dickie
Rock is still as popular as ever after a
career spanning over 40 years. From 1963
to 1983, Dickie had 25 Irish hits, surpassed
only by the Beatles, Elvis Presley, Cliff
Richard, David Bowie and the Rolling
Stones. During his time with the Miami
Showband, Dickie attracted the kind
of mass hysteria normally reserved for
boybands like Westlife.
With his albums and autobiography flying
off the shelf, these are exciting times for
Dickie, who has already secured a wellearned place in Irish entertainment history.

‘Spring Awakening’ is a fearless portrayal
of the lives of young people growing up
in a repressive society. It is a play about
discovery, desire and the loss of innocence.
MUSIC
Teenage friends share their insecurities and
deepest fears. Children strive to make their
parents proud at all costs. Young men and
women, curious and confused by unfamiliar
impulses, make rash decisions – with heartbreaking consequences.
Though written at the end of the 19th
century this classic, European drama still
resonates today. It casts a light on some
of our own society’s enduring taboos and
navigates the difficult and often distressing
journey through adolescent sexuality.

Three lost souls are torn from their day-to-day lives and
catapulted into a surreal world of exhilaration and fantasy,
only to fall to the depths of the underworld in this tale of
loneliness, violence, decay and death. The play follows three
characters over the course of a single night in Dublin; a former
schoolteacher, her lonely, estranged daughter, and a serial
killer who has sold his soul to the Devil. Written entirely in
rhyme, its rhythm swoops and soars, dragging you with it on
a grizzly and unsettling journey through the city’s streets.
If you like your plays on the dark side — do not miss
this show!
Written by the inimitable Mark O‘Rowe, (‘Howie the
Rookie’ and ‘Intermission’), ‘Terminus’ will take you on
a white-knuckle rollercoaster ride. The cast include
Fiona Lucia McGarry (‘Corcadorca’), Deborah Wiseman
(‘Anu’) and Steven ‘Jed’ Murray (‘Anu’). HALLOWEEN

Fíbín eagrán dúbailte de dhráma Gaeilge
agus Béarla atá ar churaclam na hArdteiste i láthair ar aon lá amháin! ‘An Triail’
as Gaeilge agus ‘Othello’ as Béarla – i stíl
Fíbín ar ndóigh! Baineann Fíbín úsáid as
puipéid, teicnicí fhísiúla mhealltacha agus
stíl fhisiciúil léiriúcháin chun tuiscint na
mac léinn ar nádúr casta na ndrámaí a
shaibhriú. Tá ócáid drámaíochta á cruthú acu
do dhaltaí a thacóidh lena gcuid staidéir ar
na dtéacsanna féin chomh maith le léargas
a thabhairt dóibh ar an ndrámaíocht agus
ar na hEalaíona araon. Is í feidhm Fíbín ná
oideachas ar bhealach siamsúil a chur ar fáil.
For the first time ever in Ireland, Fíbín is
presenting a double-bill of the Leaving
Certificate English & Irish curriculum plays
in one day. ‘An Triail’ in Irish and ‘Othello’
in English – Fíbín-style of course! Using
puppets, masks, engaging visuals and a
physical performance, Fíbín seeks to address
issues highlighted by both teachers and
students alike, by creating a theatrical event
for students that will support their studies of
the plays themselves while giving them an
insight into theatre and the arts at the same
time. Fíbín’s aim - to educate and entertain!

It’s October 1978, Pope John Paul I is not long
dead, Autumn is closing in and Pat Farnon
has ‘some business’ to do in town. This
play is a charming encounter – an ageing
man still with a boundless enthusiasm for
life. Hilariously funny, tender and at times
downright daft.
The show was written by and stars Mikel
Murfi. It was created with Sligo County
Council and The Hawk’s Well Theatre, Sligo
as part of the Bealtaine Festival.

Damn everything but the circus. She is a
cruel and demanding mistress. In her crown
of sequins and sawdust, youth will perish and
talent will bleed, and yet we love her so.
‘Believe in the Magic of Christmas’ is the
must-see, feel-good family show coming
to axis this holiday season. A story about
hope, happiness, friendship and most of all:
if you believe in magic anything can happen!
The script is set around the adventures of
two characters; a little girl who has lost all
hope around Christmas and her new friend
Sprinkles, an elf in training who has been
sent on a mission to prove himself worthy
to join the “E.L.F. team”. All proceeds of
this performance will go to the Irish
Cancer Society.
Kenneth Fall, Tina Machina and Ursula Burns

It’s always party time when Abba are about, but
when it’s the 40th anniversary of their foundation
and it’s the Christmas show, then that’s a real
excuse for a party. This happy sing-a-long party
celebrates with a loud and proud fanfare. It’s the
perfect way to start your Christmas celebrations.
The play tells the story of 12 year old, Joe Kavanagh, who
has a dream. A dream big enough to overcome any obstacle.
Medication for a childhood illness has left him overweight
and a target for school bullies. However, Joe finds solace on
the school rugby team as a prop in the scrum. The play is set
in Joe’s bedroom. A place far away from bullies and illness
where he gets to be the greatest Tight Head Prop in world
rugby and captain of a winning Irish Rugby World Cup team.
‘Joe Prop’ goes on nationwide tour in September which will
continue to support Barnardos.
10% of all ticket sales will be donated to
Barnardos as well as all proceeds from
