From Allan H.L. Ehrlick, President of AHAEC
Best wishes to all AHAEC members, past and present, as we celebrate our club’s
60th year in existence. This is quite an achievement, and it is all because of your
involvement.
Throughout the six decades this association has had wonderful people in our
membership, many of whom have served on our Board of Directors, Committee
Chairs, Show Committees and other volunteer capacities.
Of course, it has been our spectacular horses, owners and exhibitors participating
at our club hosted shows that have endeared us in memory of their local
achievements and to their many national accomplishments.
Thank you for your loyalty to the Arabian horse and to AHAEC.
To all of you continued good luck, good health and many more hours of enjoyment
with your amazing Arabian horses!
From Jill Barton, President of AHAEC, 1972-73
From my beginnings with riding and owning horses, then specifically with
Arabians, in the Markham area way back when, to my being President of an
exuberant AHAEC that recorded memberships of over 425 annually, to seeing
the breed’s versatility grow in stature as owners competed with their horses in
Arabian and open events, to being a part of the volunteer group to bid to host the
1980 Canadian National Championship Show of which was a profitable venture
for AHAEC, and to witness our members achieve unheralded success locally and
internationally for their equine accomplishments and volunteer work. AHAEC
should take great pride in being 60 years old!
Unfortunately, change is inevitable, and AHAEC no longer has a strong membership
base nor horse ownership level. Whether it be due to the economic downturn,
increased costs, family dynamics or other opportunities for involvement, AHAEC
has reached a significant crossroad. AHAEC must now follow a new path, we need
new ideas, new faces and a new direction. AHAEC is no longer able to “go it alone”
to host shows & events or to promote the breed. We will need to cooperate with
6
other breeds and organizations to accomplish what we strive to do best for the
Arabian horse.
Some years ago we started an Equine Canada Breed Sport Committee and a great
logo was developed to represent this facet of our group interests. Many of the light
horse breeds & disciplines have direct representation on this Committee, David
Henderson is the Arabian rep and I serve in a non-voting capacity. There is great
enthusiasm, so we might be able to reclaim the “glory of yesteryear” through the
work efforts of many today.
AHAEC has been the common link to the majority of Arabian, Half-Arabian and
Anglo-Arabian owners and breeders in Eastern Canada, and anticipate the club to
exist for decades to come.
From Cynthia Richardson, AHA President
To All Members of the AHA of Eastern Canada:
Please accept my congratulations on your club’s 60th Anniversary. That is quite
a milestone and certainly a great accomplishment for any group to support AHA
and the Arabian community with your continued dedication.
Thanks very much for all you do and have done for the Arabian and Half/AngloArabian Horse.
Looking forward to seeing many of you at Canadian Nationals this summer.
Best wishes for a wonderful 2016.
From Jean Dinsmore, long time AHAEC member
I love the Arabian horse and horses have always been my dream. In public school
and high school my books were full of little horses with flyaway tails and manes.
In 1970 I bought my first Arabian, Gaileyna (by Gailic), and then in 1971 joined
the Arabian Horse Association of Eastern Canada. Since then, my family’s lives
have been enriched by the Arabian horse.

THE ARABIAN HORSE
HORSE OF THE DESERT
The Arabian horse is striking. Its entire appearance exudes energy, intelligence,
courage and nobility. The neck is long and arched, the back is short, and the tail is
naturally carried high. Every time an Arabian moves in its famous “floating trot”,
he announces to the world his proud, graceful nature.
Arabians are the oldest pure breed of horse. Nearly unchanged throughout the
ages, the purebred Arabian is virtually identical to those ridden in ancient Arabia.
Long eyelashes protected the eyes from sand while large nostrils assured easy
7
breathing in a hot, dry climate. Likewise, the Arabian’s deep chest, strong joints
and good lungs guaranteed its ability to carry its owner across the large stretches
of their desert homeland
Temperament also sets the Arabian apart from many breeds. For thousands of
years Arabians lived among the desert tribes of the Arabian peninsula, bred as
war mounts for quick raids into enemy camps. The harsh desert climate required
these Bedouin tribesmen to share food and water, even tents, with their horses.
As a result, Arabians developed a strong desire for human companionship that
carries forward today.
Over the centuries, the Bedouin tribes maintained strict purity of the breed. |The
Arabian is the only breed whose blood has been preserved for over five thousand
years and has contributed, in varying degrees, to the development of every other
popular breed of horse ridden today.
The Arabian horse is used to create the Half-Arabian, which has one purebred
Arabian parent, and the Anglo-Arabian, an Arabian/Thoroughbred cross.
BREED CHARACTERISTICS
The Arabian’s most identifiable characteristics are its finely chiseled head, dished
face, long arching neck and high tail carriage.
A combination of the qualities described below represents the Arabian horse:
Conformation
In general, Arabians have a short, straight back (usually one less vertebrae that
is common with other breeds), perfect balance and symmetry, a deep chest,
well-sprung ribs, strong legs of thick density and a more horizontal pelvic bone
position.
Head
The Arabian’s head features small, tipped-in ears, a tiny “teacup” muzzle, large
nostrils and large, expressive, dark eyes set wide apart.
Jibbah
Characterized by its chiseled appearance, the Arabian head is frequently enhanced
by a light protrusion, called the “Jibbah”, over the forehead that extends to just
below the eyes.
Endurance
The cheek bones are spread wide apart at the throat, enabling the muzzle to
be drawn in without compressing the windpipe, and permitting the animal to
breathe easily when travelling long distances.
Height
The Arabian horse averages 14.1 to 15.2 hands at the withers, although many are
above or below this height.
Colour
In colour, Arabians are bay, gray, chestnut and black, with an occasional roan.
Common markings are strips, snips or blaze faces, white feet or stockings.
RECREATION & COMPETITION
Today’s Arabians are also recognized for their extraordinary intelligence, stamina
8
and trainability. Versatile and competent athletes, Arabians excel in a wide variety
of activities both on the trail and in the show ring. As an endurance horse, the
Arabian has no equal. The top prizes at 100 mile endurance races almost always
go to rides on Arabian horses. Show classes in English, hunter and western
pleasure, cutting, reining, jumping, dressage and more provide opportunities at
both all-Arabian events and open breed shows, making them the perfect horse for
family members of all ages.
DOWN MEMORY LANE
(reprinted from the AHAEC club brochure, circa l985)
“Ten Arabian horse owners in Ontario began forming a local association in 1955.
Close contact with Lenore Wilson, a member of the Arabian Horse Association of
Western Canada, whose members took in the provinces Manitoba west, passed along
much advice, and thereby our Association was formed for owners from all provinces
east of Manitoba.
In April 1955, the Organizational Meeting was held at the home of Mrs. Ruth Kitchen
who is a member of our Association today. Membership has expanded to just under
450 members in 1984. Although our members are mainly from Ontario, we do offer
affiliate membership to those living outside Ontario.
One of AHAEC’s early presidents, Col. R.S. Timmis, was instrumental in starting
the Canadian Arabian Horse Association (now called the Canadian Arabian Horse
Registry) in 1958 which is the Canadian breed registry, and is part of the Canadian
National Livestock Records.
In 1958, AHAEC registered its name with the International Arabian Horse Association.
Former club President, D.A. Finkbeiner, was the first director with IAHA. In 1979,
AHAEC hosted the IAHA Annual Convention in Toronto, Ontario. AHAEC is
a member association of IAHA Region 18. In 1980 and 1983 AHAEC hosted the
Royal Red Canadian National Arabian and Half-Arabian Championships in Toronto.
AHAEC has been hosting the All Arabian Horse Shows since 19674 and the Region
18 Championship Horse Show on several occasions. AHAEC approves approximately
30 horse shows annually, and points are accumulated at such shows to qualify horse
owners for 30 awards (4 Junior, 19 Half/Anglo, 13 Purebred and 4 Open) at the Annual
Meeting and Banquet the following January. AHAEC also sponsors an Annual YouthA-Rama Show offering such classes as Showmanship, IAHA National Equitation
Qualifying as well as Purebred and Half-Arabian English and Western Pleasure.
The purpose of the AHAEC is to promote, facilitate and aid in the promotion of the
Arabian horse through showing, breeding, improvement and its general welfare; and
to promote, co-ordinate and organize all Arabian horse show activities in Eastern
Canada.

The first AGM was held January 28th, 1956 at the London YMCA & Campbell’s
Tavern in London. Since then the AGM has traversed the province, from the Royal
York Hotel in Toronto, to the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph, to Kitchener, to
Brantford, to Barrie, to Niagara Falls, to Peterborough, to Hamilton, to Waterloo, to
Trenton. Mayors of the various cities have been very welcoming to the club, both
Hamilton & Barrie proclaimed the week when the AGM was held there as ‘Arabian
Horse Week’.
The Arabian Horse Association of Eastern Canada marks a significant achievement
in 2015—60 years as being a predominant Arabian horse club! AHAEC brought
together many people from Ontario who owned & bred Arabian horses. Horse
10
shows, fairs, trail rides, quality stallions standing at stud were the norm for Arabian
horse enthusiasts in any given geographical area. Horses were imported, breedings
increased, member numbers grew. Members & their Arabian horses were sighted at
all the Arabian horse shows (sometimes travelling to two shows on a weekend), open
events (usually outdoors), at trail rides, at clinics and at parades. Great competition,
but fun times too!
Spanning six decades, AHAEC has recorded many highlights:
• membership in excess of 425
• largest Canadian Arabian Horse club
• one of the top five largest Arabian horse clubs in AHA/IAHA
• one of the host organizations for the 1979 IAHA Annual Convention held in
Toronto, with all delegates attending The Royal
• sponsoring organization for the first-ever independent Royal Red Canadian National
Championship Horse Show in 1980
• great horses competing in Arabian horse shows in Ontario each year (all Arabian,
Arabian divisions at fall fairs…)
• members becoming well respected judges & trainers
• members breeding incredible Arabians & Half-Arabians, earning notable National
Championship titles
• members on AHA/IAHA committees & show commissions
• won AHA Club Excellence Award in 2013 for breed promotion (The Royal promo
booth)
• generation after generation participating in AHAEC, as members, exhibitors,
volunteers & Directors
• members importing some of the greatest horses of all time
• Zones were created on a geographical basis to further promote the Arabian breed
within the local community & to foster more involvement with the members in that
area

A SALUTE TO PAST PRESIDENTCHARLES MCARTHUR
Born in 1916, Charles’ passion for all things horses was always prominent. After
serving in WWII, he followed his heart and purchased Arabian horses, a decision
he was never to regret.
Although now living in a nice retirement home, his life with Arabians is still
very clear in his mind, photos and reminisces close at hand. Being active with
his horses was always his focus, and with his keen eye for quality, he acquired
horses that would forever change the breed in Ontario and beyond. Purchasing
GAILIC (#23546 (Ga’Zi x Feyn, by Feyd) 1962 chestnut stallion bred by Lasma
Arabian Stud, sired 274 registered purebreds, 1966 Canadian National Reserve
Champion Stallion, AHW Sire of Significance) was that once in a lifetime chance to
own, and he did so in a historymaking way! GAILIC was the
very first syndicated Arabian
stallion and Charles was an
influential member of that
syndication group. Shortly
after the syndication Charles
received many phone calls
from some of the most prolific
Arabian breeders in America
all inquiring how to structure
a syndication. Now, more than
half a century later syndicates
rule the Arabian industry, and
GAILIC
12
it all started here in a modest community in south-west Ontario.
Another
recollection—Lady
Wentworth was visiting Ontario and
was judging an Arabian show which
Charles was exhibiting a GAILIC son at.
She, being an astute breeder in Britain
and was an acclaimed proponent for
athletic and correct horses, required
the trot to be maintained for all halter
classes. Not being a young man at
the time, these “marathon” classes
were not what anyone was used to!
But, then again, you were honoured
Lady Wentworth with Skowronek
to have Lady Wentworth, the world’s
most foremost Arabian horse breeder of the era judging in your backyard, so the
experience was well worth it!
Charles McArthur, President of AHAEC in 1967 and Vice-President in 1965 &
1966, will not be able to attend AHAEC’s 60th Anniversary AGM, but we all wish
him the very best as he celebrates his 100th birthday in 2016.

HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS
In the early days people socialized with their horses. Arabians had fun shows or open
events to compete in. Classes were HUGE, and a win was significant. The horses
would compete in a variety of disciplines, just because they could! Success within
AHAEC and the Arabian breed prospered, encouraging the development of several
breeding farms & trainers.
1985 marked the first year THE ALBERT DENNE MEMORIAL TROPHY was offered
to AHAEC’s ‘Horseperson of the Year’. This lovely award was donated by Mrs.
Wilda Denne in loving memory of her late husband, and partner in Neden Arabians of
13
Kilworthy, Ontario. The membership cast
all votes for this award, and Mrs. Denne’s
daughter, Freda Currie, and granddaughter,
Michelle Currie, presented the trophy to
Jill Barton. Since 1985 this trophy was
presented to outstanding AHAEC members
as Dalt Finkbeiner, Jane Whitwell, Ron
Johnson, Gord Sneath, Shirley Klassen,
Allan Ehrlick, Harold VanDyke, Alice
Punter, Derek Jones, Michelle Harbridge
prior to the award being retired.
As quoted from the 1998 AGM Report
by Freda Currie: “One of the evening’s
highlights & a complete surprise as well,
was the presentation by IAHA Region
18 Director Jane Whitwell to Dalton
Finkbeiner for the IAHA Volunteer Service
Award-National Level. Dalt is no stranger Members looked forward to receiving
to the Arabian horse world and has attended
the monthly newsletter in the mail
several WAHO Conventions. He has been
president of CAHR & AHAEC, and was our first Region 18 Director. Dalt is still a
very active person around the Ontario shows. He is a firm supporter to all our events.
Dalt, you clearly deserve this honour. Congratulations!”
The largest & longest running Arabian horse show in Ontario was the Canadian
Arabian Breeders Show, begun by the breeders/members of the Markham-Unionville
area. This show was held at Exhibition Place in Toronto for a long time, then moved
to the Stouffville area & concluded after celebrating its 25th Anniversary. This show
hosted the Eastern Canadian Breeders Championships several times and had nearly
200 horses exhibiting.
1980 Royal Red 23rd Annual Canadian Nationals really brought prominence to AHAEC.
The Show Committee
of Ron Garlick, Iris
Jacobs, Jill Barton,
Ted Marlow, Dann
Corby, Ron Johnson,
Dalt Finkbeiner &
Freda Currie spent a
lot of time, effort &
travelling to promote
this event. Cass Olé,
a true black Arabian
stallion from Texas,
starred in the movie
‘’The Black Stallion’’
attended the show with
his handler, Margo
The club has produced a variety of promotional handouts
14
Smith-Shallcross, and performed during the show. Did you know that in 1980 a free
ticket was provided to every 4-H member in the Ontario to attend the Royal Red
Canadian National Championship Show in Toronto? Judges for this show included
Casey Bratner, Dick Dady and Prof. Norm Dunn; Hunter/Jumper & Equitation judges
Dorinda Fuller, Joe Vanorio and George Hudson.
AHAEC’s silent auction, a
fund raising event at the AGM,
began in 1989. The highest
profit on record from the auction
amounted to $4,885. at the 1992
AGM in Barrie. This was also
the largest attended AGM with
100 members, and the largest
banquet with 242, followed by
Brantford & Waterloo with 220.
Open Competition trophy has
been contested over the years,
but Donna Hosking has won it
often with Half-Arabians GJ
WMA Montanna Gold was a great breed

Open Versatility trophy was
won many times by Rani Adventure, owned by Linda Moyes and Vivianne Macdonald
competed well with Kintyre El Mateus.
Don Barlow of Misty Lane Tack began supplying AHAEC with the annual awards and
show ribbons in 1995.
The Arabian Royal Red Amateur Bonanza (ARRAB) Program started in the 1990’s
formulated by Jean Dinsmore and Jill Barton, and continued under the stewardship of
these Arabian horsewomen. Over the years this program has provided thousands upon
thousands of dollars to our resident amateur riders in specific classes at the annual
Region 18 Championship Show, along with ribbons and merchandise. The ARRAB
program is a beneficial program to our Arabian exhibitors, and we appreciate the
continued loyalty of our sponsors and fund raising through the Funtastic Trail Ride
and bids on the silent auction items at AHAEC’s Annual Banquet.
From the 1982 AGM: “A special Youth Meeting was held separately from the main
body of the Association’s meeting, with approximately 25 people in attendance,
including the IAHA Region 18 Director, Harold VanDyke. One would have to
commend the Youth Leader, Jean Dinsmore, for using her imagination & 4-H
experience in providing more interest for the Youth and trying to stir their participation
in more activities other than just showing. She is working diligently on projects to
encompass all age categories of the Youth involved. Instead of a specific Youth show
this year it was felt that the members would benefit more from having a “fun day”,
where the tension of competition is eliminated and the Youth from across the province
can socialize and assist one another. Grounds have already been donated for this
purpose. One adult member who is also a trainer brought forward the fact that many
youth are interested in showing Arabians but can’t afford their own, and would like to
15
see other exhibitors provide horses on a show day.”
The 1994 IAHA Regional Youth Team Tournament winners were AHAEC #3 with 177
points, team members included Christina Cooper, Emily Hall, Andrew Lowry, Molly
MacKenzie, Katherine Monk, Katherine Waszkiewicz and Team Coach Cheryl SmithEhrlick. The 1995 IAHA Regional Youth Team Tournament winners were AHAEC
with 186 points, team members included Janet Wojcik, Erin Edwards, Lisa Bean,
Christina Harris, Erin Murphy, Lynsey Hosking and Team Coach Michelle Currie.
They tied as the highest scoring team in all of IAHA!
The 1996 High Point Report stated “AHAEC’s approved show calendar listed 25
shows. The most popular division is Hunter Pleasure with the English Pleasure and
Pleasure Driving struggling to survive. There was no winner for the Versatility Award.”
AHAEC continues to be the foundation Arabian horse club in eastern Canada. Our
members and their horses accumulate major awards in Canada, the U.S. and abroad.
Youth members, upon completing the competitive years here in AHAEC, branch out
and become highly respected horsemen & horsewomen. AHAEC won the AHA’s
Club Excellence Award in 2013, recognizing the club’s breed promotion at the Royal
Agricultural Winter Fair. Dal-Apollo+// is named 2014 WAHO Horse of the Year.
Those magnificent perpetual Gladys Brown Edwards’ trophies the club had for High
Point awards were auctioned in January 2015. Spirited bidding amongst past winners
was a highlight as members were only too happy to spend handsome dollars to buy
these memorable keepsakes, each bearing an engraved rich history of legendary
owners & horses. In November 2015 Arabian horse classes triumphantly return to the
prestigious Royal Horse Show, thanks to the hard work of club members organizing
the Arabian Native Costume Invitational $5000 Challenge. Members having fun with
their Arabians, Half-Arabians & Anglo-Arabians in a variety of disciplines maintains
a primary focus for the club.
End of an era, perpetual trophies auctioned January 2015
As the 60th Anniversary of AHAEC’s AGM approaches, Vivianne Macdonald attended
the very first meeting in 1955 with her friend Chris Wade, a fellow Arabian horse
owner. The article below has been provided by Vivianne, as it provides much historical
reference about our horses and breeders.
16
EARLY CANADIAN ARABIAN IMPORTS
FROM ENGLAND 195O’S
As a teenager I rode with Chris Wade at her farm in Brampton, Ontario. This was
the stopping place for many imports, so I became involved with them. None of these
Arabians were ever shod.
*RANIX ( Rissalix – Iorana) bay S., foaled1946. Breeder: Mrs. M A Smith. Imported
1947 by Joan Grey Olgivie, Oakville. Then became property of Chris Wade who
sold him to Bazy Tankersly, Al Marah Stud, Maryland, USA in 1965. Under Chris,
he won many halter and under saddle classes. He sired many purebred and partbred foals. One of his better-promoted foals was Rimax and when Chris started to
campaign him under saddle, I got to ride
*Ranix in many classes. I remember riding
in my first Trail class at Barrie Fair and still
have the trophy to prove it.
*Ranix was a well-mannered, kind horse that
raised his son Rimax. They would stand side
by side either in the truck, or tied outside a
stall. *Ranix had an unusual copper sheen to
his bay coat similar to that seen in the Akhal
Teke horses. He also had the ideal Arabian
“float” at any speed at the trot – from a
western jog to an extended trot.
Joan Olgivie also imported *MANOLITA
(Marmassek – Myola) bay M, foaled 1949,
*MANOLA (General Grant – Manolita) bay
S 1956 Imported in utero. *MINARETTA
(Alexus – Myoletta) Ch M 1954. These were
purchased from Mr. & Mrs. Dinsdale and
Vivianne on *RANIX in 1961
imported 1955.
Several interesting points surround *SARAFAN (Manak d.b. – Seriya [Skowronek]).
This bay stallion with 4 white legs and narrow strip was foaled April 4 1939. His
breeder W H Anderson, was concerned about World War II and evacuated his children
to stay with the Hill family at Limber Lost Lodge, Huntsville, Ontario until the end of
the war. Money could not be sent from England, so the stallion was sent as a thank
you gift and transferred to Marion B. Hill, March 04 1947. Keep in mind that these
horses would travel by train in England to the Docks, then put in the hold of oceangoing freighters, until arrival in North America. Port of entry would be either New
York, Halifax, Quebec City or Montreal. Another train ride followed, with the whole
journey could have taken 3-4 weeks.SARAFAN spent the next ten years at Limber Lost,
where he was the personal mount of Mr. Hill. When Mr. Hill died, it was noticed that
SARAFAN was not well. He was sent to Ontario Veterinary College, Guelph, where
17
he had cancer removed from his penis. He was then stabled at Chris Wade’s farm to
recover. He sired several half-Arabians, but I do not know of any purebreds. He did
not have registration papers with Arabian Horse Registry in USA so this may have
been a factor. This horse was well broke and could cut cows. I showed him in many
classes. Sarafan died from a recurrence of cancer and Mrs. Hill donated his body to
OVC. Many of you will have seen his skeleton at various displays and events. It is the
skeleton used in Equimania at the Royal Winter Fair and at Can-Am in London ON.
In 1950 Stuart Bennett, Scottsdale Farms, Georgetown, Ontario Imported
*MIHRIMA (Riffal – Namilla) bay mare foaled 1946. She was bred by Gladys Yule
and was in foal to Grey Owl. Her resulting foal was the grey stallion Senab. She was
sent to OVC to foal, as purebred Arabians were a rarity, and rejected the foal. Chris
Wade raised him on a bottle, naming him Bones. When he was registered someone
changed the name from Senob to SENAB. He was the private mount of Mr. Bennett,
sired several foals for him. I visited the farm later and asked where he was. He
had bitten his stable-man and was subsequently destroyed. *Mihrima’s second foal,
Rimax, by Ranix was also bottle raised by Chris Wade and was given to her after her
dedication to helping him survive.
The big importation of Arabian horses from England to North America occurred after
1956. Lady Wentworth of Crabbet Park and Gladys Yule of Hickstead/Hanstead Stud
both died. The succession duties in England were over 50% so a large part of the estates
had to be sold in order to maintain the remainder. Cecil Covey inherited Crabbet Park,
but bred very few mares in the next few years, because of the tax problems.
Importations to the U.S.A. at that time included *Serafix (John Rogers) *Silver
Chrystal (John Rogers), *Riffla (Anne McCormick), *Iorana, *Count Dorsaz (Bazy
Tankersly), *Electric Storm (Nancy Magro), *Rissilletta, *Serafire (J Rogers),
*Indian Magic (J Rogers)
Importations into Ontario were just as important. S. G. Bennett imported in 1957 4
chestnut mares from Crabbet Park.
*INDIAN PERIL (Dargee – Indian Pearl) chestnut m. born 1952 in foal to Sliver
Drift. Peril raised 4 foals. I broke her to ride when she was about 10 years old. She
was a big, deep bodied, mare with a fabulous trot. Her foals were: *Star Drift (Silver
Drift) chestnut mare 1958. I broke this mare and was entered to show her under saddle
at the 1961 Royal Winter Fair. Preparing for the show, she was at Chris Wade’s, reared
over backwards, knocked me out and I still have the dent in my leg where she stepped
on me. They found her standing straddle me. I spent two days in the hospital, and
subsequently rode Rimax in the costume class. I think the saddle had a broken tree and
pinched her. She was sold shortly afterwards and the records are not correct as she was
not sold until early 1962…. or at least did not leave Ontario.
1959 Indian Prince (Senab) sold to Mrs. T Gillespie.
1960 Indian Princess (Senab) sold to William Harrison, then Liz Barnes, later William
Geddes. I bought one of her daughters Arabi Indian Zace (Zabou) as a weanling from
the Geddes family.
1962 Indian Duchess (Senab) Bay mare sold to Canon Large, North Bay, Ontario
*SILFRETTA (Oran – Silfina [Serafina]) Chestnut mare born 1955. This mare was
extremely nervous. I realize now that she had an eyesight problem. I rode her and
showed her under saddle, but she had to have her eye covered so you could mount
18
and once on board, you did not wave to anyone, or move suddenly. She was sold to
Michigan State University and produced 12 foals including Ghaliis Comet (Ghalii),
Easter Basket (Bask), Royal Triumph (Gwalior), Desert Glow (Shaikh El Badi).
*INDIAN SHADOW (Bright Shadow – Indian Shalom) chestnut mare born 1955 She
produced 4 foals all by Senab. Dancing Shadow 1963 mare, Radiant Shadow mare
1964, Grey Shadow stallion 1965, and Brilliant Shadow mare 1967. .She developed
heaves and produced no more foals. She was easy to train and although small, I rode
her quite successfully.
*SILVANITY (Silver Vanity – Silfina) chestnut mare born 1957 sold to Charles Kee,
Streetsville, ON. I broke and rode her for a few years. I showed her at a mixed spring
show in Brampton Arena as a three year old. She produced several foals by Rimax and
Sharix, then was sold to Max Campbell, Collingwood and one of her last foals was
Arrborr who was owned for many years by Rose Danko, New Lowell. He produced
many successful endurance and competitive distance horses.
S.G. Bennett imported *SERAFINA in 1966. Several of her offspring were already
well known, *Serafix, *Silver Drift, *Oran Van Crabbet. She was in foal carrying
*Bright Gold. And produced Serafimax (Rimax) mare 1968, Seramax (Rimax) stallion
1969, sold to Paul J Brown, St Eustace, P.Q. Serakini stallion (El Sikkini).
Charles Kee, who had purchased Silvanity also imported two mares that I had contact
with and rode with his son on weekends in the 1960’s.
*SHARIENE (Shakim – Josepha) bay mare 1946 bred by Mrs. M Burrows imported
mid 1950.
*RISSALIRA (Rissalix – Risara) grey mare born 1947 imported 1958-60
Peter H. Godson, Caledon, Ontario also imported 2 mares. July 15 1956 saw the
arrival of *Farissa (Rissalix – Nueyma) chestnut mare born 1950. Bred by
Lady Marcia J Miles.
*Risaya (Bright Shadow – Risseefa) chestnut mare born 1954 Bred by R Dykes.
These mares were the personal riding horses for Pete Godson. He rode almost daily
through the Caledon hills and I often met him on my rambles. One of the mares raised
a bay colt by Rimax. The colt broke a foreleg while he was still nursing, but he was
saved by O.V.C.
So my involvement with Arabian horses goes way back. I helped, grew up with, rode,
showed many of the foundation stock that is the background of the Arabian horse in
Ontario and even spread to the whole continent. I am still involved with Arabians,
part-Arabians as well as other breeds of horses. I have done a lot of things with
Arabians. Shown in almost all disciplines, fox hunted, driven for pleasure, weddings,
ridden in parades and ceremonies, given demonstrations, taught lessons, played polo,
ridden at the Nationals in Trail, Open Hunter, Amateur Hunter, owned the 1996
National Champion Half Arab Open Jumper and ridden the 2005 Competitive Trail
National Champion (Half-Arabian and Overall. I’ve bred a 3 time Reserve National
Champion and 7 times National T10 (Working Hunter and Jumper) and a National Top
10 in Working Hunter (son of Arabi Indian Zace). I also owned a National Top Ten in
Competitive Trail.
