ST. KITTS TOURISM AUTHORITY
2011-2012 CRUISE SCHEDULE
Message from Senator Ricky Skerritt,
Minister of Tourism & International Transport.
After four years of very rapid growth, St. Kitts has become well established as
one of the leading cruise destinations in the Caribbean, and has won the respect
and envy of many of our neighbours for our achievements. This means that cruise
passenger expectations for their onshore experience in St. Kitts have become
higher than ever. We must therefore now focus on better taking care of our guests
so that their expectations will not be disappointed. Maintaining our reputation for
quality will be essential to keeping us in the cruise business.
The business of cruise tourism has become extremely competitive over the years
and is no longer just a numbers game. It is primarily about delivering a quality
onshore experience with good value for money to each and every cruise passenger. Harassing or ripping off a cruise passenger is not an option. The current economic climate has resulted in an even more demanding visitor who now has more
advanced information and many more leisure travel options available to choose
from. We must therefore work even harder and smarter to improving our local
service delivery standards. This is absolutely necessary if we are to grow the economic benefits from cruise tourism.
I therefore urge all stakeholders to do everything we can to ensure that all of our
cruise visitors leave our shores well served and pleased about their St. Kitts
experience.

Sky Safari Tours is a highly advanced, scenic zipline tour through the St. Kitts Rainforest, flying over Wingfield River. This zipline course consists of one trainer line, 180ft
long, followed by four larger zipline, lengths from 500ft to 1,350 ft. This tour strives to
unite eco-adventure with St. Kitts interpretive knowledge.
As you fly our lines you will experience unobstructed views of Brimstone Hill. While
flying through the famous "Valley of the Giants", home of some of the largest trees on
the island.
We are located in Old Road Village, the first English settlement in the west indies. Our
base site is nestled on wingfield estate, home of the oldest rum distillery and last surviving aqueduct in the Eastern Caribbean.
Our Office is a house on the Sugar estate ruins, with original structures, equipment,
chimney, aqua duct and other interesting historical elements that are available for
viewing, our knowledgeable guides can offer you an informative tour.
Our entire site is adjacent to the renowned Romney Manor / Caribelle Batik tourist attractions. A three minute walk will bring you from our exciting tour to the beautifully
landscaped botanical gardens.

‘Liamuiga’ is the name given to this lovely island by the native
Amerindians who lived here. Its meaning, ‘Fertile Island’, suggests a friendly
environment which undoubtedly attracted European colonists later on. Indeed, ‘Saint
Christopher’ (the name attributed to the navigator, Christopher Columbus, and sometimes shortened to the more familiar, ‘St. Kitts’) was the first island on which both
England and France established their Caribbean Empires.
WINGFIELD ESTATE EST. 1625
Wingfield Estate is an amazing destination. Its place in Caribbean is unique.
It was the first land grant in the English Caribbean. Its first owner was Sam
Jefferson, the great, great, great grandfather of Thomas Jefferson, 3 rd President of the United States.
The setting is stunning, adjacent to Romney Manor, home of Caribelle Batik, the interpretative ruins explain how sugar was made from cane and how
rum was made from sugar. You will see an aqueduct, the mill house, the
boiling house, a firing tunnel (very mysterious) a historically unique 17 th
century rum distillery and so much more.
In 2010 archeologists discovered, buried and hidden for centuries an intact
Rum Distillery. It pre-dates 1675 and is the oldest standing distillery known
in the West Indies.
The estate is a photographers dream as you wander through a by gone age.
We invite you to share the passion of the archeologists who regularly visit
this important site. Join us to dig for our history.

Like many other countries, it has a turbulent history of massacres of
indigenous people, slavery and war. Africans, brought against their will, toiled,
struggled and eventually prevailed against an oppressive system. Their descendants
now comprise the majority of the population, living easily in a multi-ethnic and multi
-cultural matrix in which the elements of Native America, Africa and Europe are
combined.
The island, moreover, retains a welcoming aspect: a forested central
mountain range; verdant fields, dotted with 18th century sugar mills, sloping gently to
the inviting sea; charming towns and villages strung like jewels along the
necklace of the Island Main Road; the narrow and picturesque peninsula reaching to
the sister island of Nevis. All of its attractions are accessible, and many can be experienced in one day.
Then there are the people. From the knowledgeable taxi driver; to the brighteyed children on their way to school; the generous and caring attendants at the
hotels, restaurants and shops; office workers ambling purposefully along the streets
of Basseterre, our people project a country on the go, youthful but Experienced and
confident.

No visit to St.Kitts is complete without a visit to
Caribelle Batik at Romney Manor, Old Road. Once owned by
Sam Jefferson II, the great, great Grandfather of Thomas Jefferson, third president of the USA, this estate is the oldest estate in the English speaking Caribbean.
Caribelle Batik is a unique studio which produces colorful clothing, accessories and gifts. Using ancient Indonesian
techniques of resisting dye with wax. Caribelle uses 100% sea
island cotton to create distinctive designs which last a lifetime. Each hand made pieces is unique distinct, beautiful and
practical. In addition to the demonstration area where the art
form is visualized, there is an expansive shop where friendly
staff completes the experience.
Wander around the lush Botanical Gardens and admire
the tropical plants including the 350 years old Saman tree, a
scene which is any photographer’s paradise.

The islands of St. Kitts and Nevis are two of the Caribbean's oldest colonized
territories. St. Kitts became the first British colony in the West Indies in 1624
and then became the first French colony in the Caribbean in 1625, when both
nations decided to partition the island.

Its French name simply means "lowland," a description that must have been
scratched onto a French sea chart sometime during the late 1620s. In the 375 ensuing years there have been many Basseterre’s, for earthquakes, floods, hurricanes,
fires, and invasions have all swept through this modest community. Set before the
dramatic backdrop of St. Kitts' lush green hills, Basseterre today retains much of
the elegant Georgian character of Nelson's days.
Basseterre is probably one of the most pleasing capitals to the eye in the Caribbean.
Basseterre's Historic District, towards the centre of the town exhibits excellent examples of Creole and West Indian architecture. Basseterre has been around for
some time; French Basseterre was a flourishing and much respected town back in
1672 leading an English visitor to remark that Basseterre was a 'town of good bigness, whose houses are well-built of Bricks, Freestone and Timber; where merchants have their storehouses, and is well inhabited by tradesmen and are well
served with such commodities, both for back and belly, together with utensils for
the houses and Plantations...'. By the end of the 18th Century Basseterre had grown
in size and boasted (including the village of Irish Town) a population of 3000 and
some 800 houses. Devastating city fires since then, though, forced much of the
town to be rebuilt. It has, happily, been faithfully restored to indigenous styles even
up to the new Government Headquarters and the Courthouse. A walk through Independence Square, The Circus and Liverpool Row shows excellent examples of public, commercial and residential styles.

Did you know…?
St. Kitts became a successful colony of England and France and served as a base
and a model for the establishment of other English and French colonies in the Caribbean. African people were brought to the islands from the 1630s to toil on the
tobacco, cotton and then sugar plantations. This infamous trade and exploitation of
humans continued well into the 19th century.

Did you know…?
Did you know…?
That over 2,000 Carib Indians were slaughtered at Bloody Point by colonial British
and French troops in 1626. Folklore holds that this dried river bed once flowed blood
for three days following the onslaught.
April 2012
Sir Thomas Warner was the first British Governor in the West Indies,
first visiting St. Kitts in 1623. He is buried on the grounds of St. Thomas Church in Middle Island, St.Kitts.
