IB Farmers’ Market rocks
It’s hard to imagine a better place to spend a summer’s Friday
afternoon than the Imperial Beach Farmers’ Market situated at
Portwood Pier Plaza. Beginning at noon and lasting til 7:30 p.m., this
market is long enough to stretch through two meals, which is a good
thing because participating vendors offer a melting pot of food styles.
Start at the colorful Surfhenge sculpture with its arches shaped
like surfboards. You’ll find the typical vegetable, fruit and flower purveyors. Specialty food vendors include The Cookie Lady, Moroccan
food supplies at Lillianna’s Delices and those trendy cronuts (half
croissant/half doughnut) at a stand filled with pastries.
But it’s the prepared food that draws in passers-by. Empanadas,
kettle corn and Bavarian nuts are available, as are fresh guacamole,
hummus and chicken on a stick. This is your chance to try Ethopian and Salvadoran dishes, or you might go for the more familiar
sweet roasted corn, gyros and tamales. Filipino lumpia, Brazilian
pastels, Indian entrées and fish tacos round out this diner’s delight.
Then wash it all down with a fancy lemonade infused with chilies
or cucumbers or an Italian cream soda. And don’t forget to stop by
Harry D’z for some barbecue and to read his compelling posted
story about getting into the food business.
It’s not all munchies and sips at this market. IB Pet,
Dream Jewelry and IB Crochet are also on hand. The latter
— perched just before the pier — is a cornucopia of custom creations by “The Happy Hooker,” as Tawnya LaFave calls herself.
