Over the last few years we have gradually extended our tailor-made programme in the Caribbean, as our travels have taken us to yet more beautiful islands. In this, our latest newsletter, we’d like to tell you about our newest destinations - Saint Lucia and Barbados The incredible Pitons on St Lucia Maxwell Beach on Barbados These islands are better known than the more undiscovered parts of the Caribbean that you have visited with us, but both St Lucia and Barbados offer wonderful holidays, with lots to do and a huge choice of places to eat out – if you know where to look! We have carefully selected the very best places to stay, including some little-known gems which we really love, and as always, we can tell you about a variety of hotels to suit all tastes and every budget. Naturally we are still featuring our much-loved favourites of Grenada, St Kitts, Nevis and Tobago... and of course Bequia - the enchanting little hideaway which has proved so popular with our clients over the last two years. We believe there is something for everybody here! The Caribbean is not just one single place... it is a group of diverse and wonderfully contrasting islands So if you travel all the way to the Caribbean – why not take the opportunity to visit two or even three islands in the same holiday? We can tailor-make a trip which will enable you to do this – with simple, quick and comfortable connections between various destinations. See Page 10 of this newsletter for some great ideas for island-hopping... Here is one example of what it is possible to arrange: PLUS Grand Anse Beach on Grenada Lower Bay on Bequia PLUS Speightstown Beach on Barbados All 3 islands in one easy trip! just St Lucia N E W! Plantations and Pitons beaches too... To speak to an expert ring 01373 814204 or visit www.juststlucia.co.uk or email [email protected] Why go to St Lucia? A lot of Caribbean travellers say that St Lucia is the most beautiful of all the islands – it might just be true... Much of it is coated in lush and fertile greenery, and there is a huge area of mountainous rainforest, coconut and banana plantations. Down in the south west, two jungle-covered lava cones – the Pitons – soar out of the sea, a sight that is simply jaw-dropping. The island also has more than its fair share of stunning tropical beaches and many amazing coral reefs. It really is an island with stunning scenery. Is the north of the island very different to the south? The north of St Lucia is far less mountainous than the south and so it is more densely populated. The area around Rodney Bay has lots of hotels, a wide selection of restaurants and bars, and a very fine beach with lots of watersports. There are however some special and secluded hotels in the north – Cap Maison and East Winds are two of our favourites. The south of the island is different in lots of ways, more mountainous and less populated. This part of the island is home to some of the Caribbean's most characterful and charming accommodation. Hotels on lush plantation estates where home-grown produce abounds on the menu – sweet gingerbread cottages in amazing locations. Then of course there are the unforgettable Pitons… Boucan 1 St Lucia's newest hotel – owned by Hotel Chocolat (the UK chain of chocolate shops) – on a historic cocoa plantation. A sleek restaurant with a cluster of lodges attached, and a stunning plantation to explore. Reduit Beach on St Lucia Is a two-centre holiday on St Lucia – North and South – a good idea? So what are the main reasons for choosing to visit St Lucia and what is there to do? We think it is. The two areas are very contrasting and to visit one area whilst staying in the other will involve long road journeys and lots of time. We can arrange for you to divide your time in any way that you choose – give us a call to discuss the possibilities. • • • • Alternatively you might want to visit St Lucia as well as another island. Have a look at page 10 of this newsletter for some ideas... St Lucia has two airports – one in the south and one in the north – which helps us minimise transfer times for clients wishing to visit another island after staying in St Lucia. 2 Ladera A truly remarkable hotel with 'open' bedrooms gazing over the incredible Pitons and the ocean. Wonderful food, stylish suites with pools, romantic beyond words and totally unique. 2 Daily flights from the UK A wide variety of accommodation Dramatic rainforest The north/south contrast Things to see and do... • • • • • • • • The Pitons Nature hikes and trails Exotic bird-watching Wonderful scuba diving Waterfalls and suphur springs Fish-fry Fridays! Dolphin and whale watching ‘Our-Planet’ Caribbean Science Museum - moving location, re-opening soon. • Aerial tram over the rainforest • And of course beaches! Fond Doux 3 Spread widely over the 250-year-old estate, the most scenic plantation on the island, are 12 one and two-bedroom, free-standing cottages. This is an incredibly beautiful place – one of the jewels of St Lucia. 4 Ginger Lily An affordable, small-scale and homely place to stay in Rodney Bay Village close to Reduit Beach. A prettier little tropical base is hard to imagine, and everything you need is close by. 5 Cap Maison The most stylish and comfortable hotel in northern St Lucia sitting above the beach of Smuggler’s Cove. Spectacular views, charming staff and really superb food in a stunning setting. East Winds 6 An elegantly casual all-inclusive hotel on a calm, safe beach with traditional cottagestyle accommodation dotted around acres of beautiful grounds which are home to an abundance of tropical birds. St. Lucia 7 Ti Kaye A serene, romantic hideaway perched on a cliffside, miles from anywhere, high above a memorable, unspoilt beach. Rustic gingerbread cottages with magnificent sea views. A great restaurant, a lovely cliff-edge spa – really a very special place. La Haut 9 The astonishing views are reason alone to stay here. The 52-acre estate is set on a hillside and you are presented with the truly spectacular sight of the verdant twin Pitons rising dramatically from the Caribbean. 10 Stonefield This 26-acre former cocoa plantation, with 18 spacious and attractively furnished cottage-like villas, is a gorgeous, casual, open-air place to stay, with panoramic views of the Petit Piton. Bay Gardens A lovely, easy-going beachside hotel on the sands of Reduit Beach in Rodney Bay. A wealth of facilities is available here with a wide choice of restaurants in the hotel or in Rodney Bay Village, which is within easy walking distance. Sugar Beach 11 An extraordinary location for this 100-acre property - once a sugar plantation and now one of the most stylish and luxurious Caribbean hotels. Pampering and service of the highest quality. See our full selection of hotels, villas, apartments and guest houses at www.juststlucia.co.uk 3 8 The original Caribbean... N E W! just Barbados To speak to an expert ring 01373 814270 or visit www.justbarbados.co.uk or email [email protected] Why go to Barbados? Barbados was one of the first Caribbean Islands to become a destination for tourism – especially for British travellers – it started in the 1950’s. Some of the finest hotels and restaurants in the Caribbean are to be found here but there is a lot more besides – especially away from the west and south coasts. The undiscovered east coast is stunning and we can arrange for you to stay here – but most of our properties are on the west where the best beaches and better known hotels are to be found. Where to stay? The west coast really is lovely and there is a wide selection of types of places to stay. Although Barbados is more expensive than some islands, we have found some wellpriced alternatives for you to try. The east coast is wild and largely untouched, complete with rolling-surf beaches and charming unspoilt villages. More and more people are choosing to spend a few days here before moving across to the betterknown west coast. What is there to see and do? Colony Club 1 A stylish but informal hotel set on tropical gardens which are home to four lagoon pools. There is a lovely open-air restaurant beside the sandy beach and there are lots of watersports too. Bayfield House 3 A plantation style house set in lovely grounds with a nice pool in a lovely tranquil setting. Excellent hospitality from the charming owners, really comfortable and stylish rooms, with restaurants and beaches nearby. 2 Mango Bay A good value all-inclusive hotel on a lovely sandy beach within easy reach of Holetown village. Ideal for couples and families of all ages, offering good facilities, comfortable rooms and good food. Treasure Beach 4 A long-established favourite, this hotel sits on one of the best beaches on Barbados. The contemporary-style suites are wellequipped and comfortable and the restaurant is excellent too. 4 • • • • • • • • • Historic plantation houses Wildlife parks Several botanical gardens Museums and churches Fish-fry Friday nights Cricket and lots of other sports Every type of watersport Boat trips And lots of beaches, countless restaurants and beach bars Sea U Guesthouse 5 An enticing little hideaway on the undiscovered east coast with just nine rooms. Close to the dramatic rolling surf of Bathsheba beach, this tranquil and relaxing guest house is an unspoilt haven. 6 The Atlantis This is a unique hotel – the only one on the dramatic undiscovered east coast of Barbados – set above the rolling surf of Tent Bay. Ten rooms, fabulous food and the most stunning of settings – we love it. Bougainvillea Beach Resort 7 A very pleasant and affordable beachfront hotel – hard to find in Barbados. Rooms of all types – some with kitchens – pools, bars, restaurants and lots of other facilities. Oistins fishing village is nearby too. Cobblers Cove 8 This Relais & Chateaux hotel offers comfort, elegance and style, with some of the finest cooking to be found in Barbados. Outstanding staff look after many regular guests in one of the best hotels on the island. Barbados 9 Coral Reef Club A luxurious hotel set in fabulous grounds, over which house the 88 rooms are spread. The open-air restaurant has a great atmosphere and is magical at night – and the spa is the best we have ever seen. Little Good Harbour 11 Casual yet sophisticated, this little gem is a well-kept secret – apart from its restaurant, the Fishpot, which is widely acclaimed. Beautiful rooms and a pretty beach – a really lovely setting. 12 The Sandpiper Smaller and more informal than its sister hotel Coral Reef Club. Nice rooms – some with kitchens – pool and beach, and a really atmospheric restaurant with great food. Sailing and other watersports too. Little Arches Beach View 13 36 Apartments, all furnished and equipped to the highest standard, situated close to two lovely beaches. Really attractive rooms and the roof terrace restaurant is widely acclaimed. just Bequia Small is very beautiful... To speak to an expert ring 01373 814244 or visit www.justbequia.co.uk or email [email protected] Since we started working in this delightful little island just four years ago, over 400 of our clients have taken our advice and paid a visit to Bequia – to see if all that we said about it was true. We have been overwhelmed by the reaction of nearly all of them who have, like all of us, fallen for the charms of this small slice of paradise. Beautiful beaches, great hotels and apartments, the most friendly of local folk, and an array of really good little restaurants, owned by island characters like Fernando and Coco – Bequians who have mastered the art of preparing and serving delicious home cooking in truly stunning settings. Maybe it is time that you made the trip to Bequia too...? Bequia Beach Hotel Bequia is tiny – just 7 square miles in total – and a trip here is a step back in time – a chance to see the Caribbean as it used to be. The harbour is the centre of island life, where we offer the Frangipani and the Gingerbread – historic hotels with lovely waterfront locations. Our most popular place to stay on the island is the muchacclaimed Bequia Beach Hotel. Five star in every respect except price, with a combination of gorgeous rooms and villas on a golden beach, it is easy to see why the hotel has become such a real favourite for our clients. Gingerbread Hotel on Bequia harbour New for this winter: Sugar Reef Plantation We are delighted to tell you all about this wonderful new addition to our collection of places to stay on Bequia. On the site of an old working plantation, Heather and Emmet – the charming owners – have created a little haven overlooking a quiet and very beautiful beach. There is an old and fascinating house in which to stay inland from the sea but our favourite rooms are the three beachfront suites just yards from the ocean. The food served here is really outstanding and the staff are delightful. Sugar Reef Beachfront Rooms From our Bequia Postbag “we didn’t imagine that places like this still existed but you were absolutely right! We simply adored it…” “Didn’t believe that we would have breakfast in Gatwick and be swimming in Bequia before sunset – fabulous!...” “Your idea of a week in Grenada and a week in Bequia was spot on. Great contrasts and a perfect combination.” Time on Bequia plus a few days on a luxury yacht…. How does that sound? Bequia is a small gorgeous island and it is also easy to take a day-trip on the Friendship Rose to visit Mustique or the Tobago Cays. But what about spending three or four days on your own luxury 73 - foot yacht Jambalaya? Let the skipper Peter sail you from Bequia down through the magical Grenadines – swim and snorkel from deserted beaches and eat lobster suppers in little island restaurants – or let chef Sylvie prepare tasty dinners on board under the stars. Then sail back to Bequia to continue your perfect holiday. See our website for details. Jambalaya in the Grenadines See our full selection of hotels, villas, apartments and guest houses at www.justbequia.co.uk 6 just Grenada The spice island... To speak to an expert ring 01373 814214 or visit www.justgrenada.co.uk or email [email protected] Grenada - a personal view Grand Anse Beach Places to stay - something for everyone... Grenada has a wide variety of different different types of accommodation – luxury hotels like Calabash, Spice Island and La Luna share the unspoilt coastline with the most charming of little hideaways like La Sagesse and Petit Bacaye in the south and Petite Anse in the north. Then there is the marvellous two-mile beach of Grand Anse – surely one of the finest of all La Sagesse Caribbean beaches with safe swimming, first class watersports, and lots of beach bars, each with their own special atmosphere. There are really good hotels here too – Blue Horizons, Coyaba and the excellent Mount Cinnamon. Look at our website and then give us a call to find out about all the places to stay on The Spice Island. Petite Anse What is there to do on Grenada? And what is there to see? • • • • • • • • • • • Hiking in the rainforest Whale & dolphin watching Top-class scuba diving Sailing and kayaking River tubing – thrilling! Superb snorkelling – see the underwater sculptures Turtle watching Sport fishing Mountain biking Bird watching • • • • • • • The fascinating working plantations of Belmont and Dougalston Spice farms and distilleries Nutmeg plantations Levera National Park Spectacular waterfalls Ancient forts & museums Historic capital St Georges and golden sandy beaches galore My wife Janet and I first visited Grenada in 1999 and our love affair with the island started then and continues to this day. We have seen the island through some ups and downs and in more than 20 visits since that first trip we have forged very close friendships with Grenadians from all walks of life. People often ask me ‘what makes Grenada so special?’ David Wickers - acknowledged as one of the finest travel writers of recent times – said this... “Grenada has something for everyone because Grenada can provide wonderful Caribbean holidays to suit every taste, every budget and every age group. Couples or families – nearly everybody will find what they are looking for in Grenada.” The Sunday Times I think that sums it up perfectly and I also think that most of the 7,500 plus visitors we have sent to Grenada since 1999 would agree with me. It probably explains why so many people return to Grenada time and time again. It is an island of fascinating contrasts and it is really exciting to see the north of the island now getting more and more visitors, with some gorgeous places to stay and some lovely dining spots to enjoy. It is also easy to hop across to neighbouring Carriacou, either by boat or on a short flight, to see this quaint and unspoilt island. The range of restaurants in Grenada covers everything from gourmet dining to casual beach bar snacks, from sushi to Mexican, and of course there is tasty Caribbean cooking wherever you go. The locals are really friendly and the island is safe and easy to explore by jeep or on a tour with a local guide – these guides are fascinating companions and they love nothing more than to take visitors to see the real Grenada. They are rightly proud of their island and they are always such great company. So that is ‘my Grenada’ – I would love to talk to you about my favourite island and help you to visit for yourself and see what I mean! Gerry Copsey See our full selection of hotels, villas, apartments and cottages at www.justgrenada.co.uk 7 just Tobago The Robinson Crusoe island To speak to an expert ring 01373 814234 or visit www.justtobago.co.uk or email [email protected] Legend has it that Tobago was the island on which Robinson Crusoe landed and settled - whether this is fact or legend, one thing is certain: Crusoe would have been very much at home here. The island is one of beauty and contrasts and, despite the growth of tourism in the last twenty years, it remains unspoilt, and indeed in many areas, still undiscovered. The traditional Tobago of golden sandy beaches and friendly local fishermen still remains, whilst in the south-west corner of the island there are some lovely places to stay with accommodation of the highest standard. The South West Northern Tobago The Rainforest The north east of Tobago provides the chance to see the amazing wild birdlife and to see the incredible variety of marine life. Take the little glass-bottom boat from Speyside to the island of Little Tobago. Twenty minutes by boat to this sanctuary – home to sixty species of birds. Guides will escort you whilst you explore this haven. The snorkelling here is truly amazing. Take a trip to Charlotteville to see one of the most natural of fishing villages and enjoy a snack at a little roti shack. Or visit Speyside with its array of local shops and eating places. The oldest in the Western Hemisphere Tobago's interior is rich in nature and wildlife and the mountainous Tobago Forest Reserve contains a dazzling variety of tropical flora and fauna. We recommend experienced guides to lead your trek through this amazing terrain with its wildlife and waterfalls. Blue Waters Inn is the best place to stay in this area – lovely sea-facing rooms and a few bungalows overlooking the beautiful Batteaux Bay. Recently upgraded to a very good standard. Still the most popular area for visitors, with beautiful golden sandy beaches and a good selection of restaurants and bars, shops and cafes. There are lots of watersports on Pigeon Point Bay but perhaps the loveliest of the beaches is Stonehaven Bay - with two delightful collections of villas - Plantation Beach Villas and Stonehaven Villas. Plantation Beach Villas Blue Waters Inn Beach - Batteaux Bay Villas at Stonehaven Cheap flights to Tobago Tobago still retains its charter airline service which offers the most competitive prices for flights to the Caribbean. Prices start from as little as £450 return which make holiday prices really attractive. See our full selection of hotels, villas and apartments at www.justtobago.co.uk 8 just St Kitts & Nevis Two islands... one paradise To speak to an expert ring 01373 814210 or visit www.juststkittsnevis.co.uk or email [email protected] Hermitage Plantation, Nevis Ottley’s Plantation Inn, St Kitts The wooden buildings of Hermitage are steeped in history and tradition. Cottages are very comfortable and all have private terraces with views of the grounds. The charming owners have created a homely feel to Hermitage and the delicious food served here includes lots of local produce. We are very fond of this place – a genuine slice of Nevitian history. This fine family-run plantation on St Kitts sits majestically on acres of rolling lawns and grounds which overlook the ocean. The suites are luxurious and some have small pools – all are really comfortable. The restaurant has an excellent reputation and the Sunday brunch is a St Kitts institution. Free rides to and from the beach are provided and you can actually walk from the grounds straight into the rainforest. There is a super spa too... In the 17th and 18th centuries there were almost 100 sugar plantations in the old islands of Saint Christopher and Nevis but, apart from a few fascinating ruins around the islands, almost nothing remains of all the buildings that were the centre of a thriving industry. There are, however, four wonderful old plantations which have been lovingly restored to provide marvellous places to stay – three on Nevis and just one on St Kitts. Each has its own personality and individual style, but they share the same dedication to providing the warmest of welcomes, the finest food and top quality accommodation for their guests. St Kitts and Nevis are very close together - just ten minutes by speedboat. So, most people visit both islands in the same trip. Ask us for details on these two centre trips. Things to see and do • Montpelier Plantation, Nevis Nisbet Plantation, Nevis Superb rooms in a large lush estate which overlooks the ocean The food is superb, whether fine dining or in the more casual Indigo tapas restaurant – you can even dine inside the old sugar mill! There is shuttle transport to the private beach club which has comfy loungers, cool drinks and tasty snacks. A spa, huge pool and tennis are also on hand . The only beachside plantation on the two islands, Nisbet is a really delightful place to stay. Cottages are dotted around the beautiful avenue of swaying palm trees that leads to the sea, and guests enjoy breakfast and lunch at Coconuts by the ocean, and dinner in the majestic Great House. There are also some nice little restaurants nearby. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • St Kitts scenic railway ride around the island Horseracing in Nevis Golf on both islands Nature trails, hikes Mountain biking Whale & dolphin watching Horseriding Botanical gardens Forts and museums Nevis heritage village Birdwatching - 126 types! Each island we cover has its own identity, its own style and its own landscape. Some of the islands have better beaches, others have the better restaurants and so on... A two - or even three centre holiday would give you the chance to enjoy and experience the contrasts and different characteristics that are to be found on individual islands. Botanical Gardens in Barbados A beach in the Grenadines Island-hopping Island - hopping might well conjure up memories of moving round Greek Islands in the 70’s - hours spent waiting for ferries that never arrived, plane connections that were cancelled, and it taking you taking two days to reach the next island that you could actually see across the water! Things have changed! We are pleased to tell you that we can arrange Caribbean holidays visiting two or even three islands, with smooth, quick and comfortable connections. For example: 08.30 breakfast in Bequia, 10.00 fly to Grenada, 11.15 on the beach in Grenada. Two centres on the same island... Some of the islands we cover have such amazing contrasts in their different regions that it makes for a fascinating holiday to divide your time in one island between two areas. For example: East & West Barbados Two completely different experiences just 15 miles apart but 50 years apart in many ways. The Atlantis in the unspoilt east and Little Good Harbour in the more up market west make a lovely combination. North & South Grenada Petite Anse in the north, a great location on a wild deserted beach is a superb little hotel. Spend time here then go down to the charming La Sagesse in the south. North & South St Lucia Great food, fine rooms and a super beach at Cap Maison in the north, followed by time in a beautiful cottage at Fond Doux in the south – the most scenic of plantations. Between us we have visited every hotel, every cottage, every villa on every island. We have been to the bars and restaurants too – and the sights and attractions – done the hikes, been on the boats, shopped in the minimarkets and met the locals... Here Are The Experts… Gerry Copsey I have been in the travel business for 25 years and still love it – every day is different and we really do have a lot of delightful clients that I now regard as friends. We all enjoy bringing quality tourism to such lovely islands and to helping their economic development. I have been so fortunate to travel so much in my life – my favourite spots in the Caribbean? – any good beach bar at sunset, Fernando’s restaurant in Bequia, The Dodgy Dock at True Blue Bay in Grenada, the Yorkshire Dales, rural France - and home in Somerset! Janet Copsey One of the nicest things about dealing with so many small hotels is that they are family businesses like ours. This means we share the same ideas about customer service and also the personal touches – which is what our clients really like. I share Gerry’s deep affection for Grenada (where we were married!) but I love to find new places too. The east Coast of Barbados is my current favourite – it is stunning! I was born by the sea in North Wales so I am drawn to beaches anywhere so I am spoilt for choice in the Caribbean. I also love beaches in the UK - walking with our dog – but best of all for me though is still a small French village on market day – bliss! Mandy Burten I joined the team 8 years ago and am proud to be a Director of the company. I have been in travel for almost half my life working overseas as well as here in the UK but I am happiest now to be part of a small specialist firm dealing with clients on a very personal level in real depth. The best part of the job is helping someone plan their Caribbean trip in great detail then getting a call from them when they come back to say that they have had a most wonderful time. Belinda Brendon Some may call me a travel bore... I prefer to be classed as a travel addict! Fortunately my husband and daughter are also intrepid explorers – we have just returned from a trip to Borneo to see Orangutans. I really enjoy using my knowledge to help clients get the best out of new places throughout our unspoilt Caribbean locations. On Grenada, nothing beats a simple lunch and a rum punch overlooking the beach at La Sagesse. I think the real challenge in my job is not just meeting people’s expectations but exceeding them! Kate Bartlett I joined Gerry & Janet just over 11 years ago so I have seen each stage of the Caribbean programme develop. I manage the administration of every holiday and my job is to make sure that every single tiny detail is booked, confirmed and checked. I have visited most of the islands and it is always a pleasure meeting with the staff in the hotels - our working relationship is helped greatly by knowing each other personally. It took me a while to get used to the laid-back approach in the Caribbean – but that’s why everyone loves going there isn’t it?... plus the sunshine and the blue sea of course! Laura Carpenter I am the newest member of the team but I have a lot of experience in the travel business so I have found it easy to fit in with the very nice and knowledgeable team here (they told me to say that). I have already been to Barbados, Bequia and Grenada and am planning where to go with my family when the kids are a little bit older. We are an active family and I look forward to taking them to the Caribbean soon. The first place to take them would have to be the amazing two mile beach of Grand Anse in Grenada - they’ll love it! and Archie... Nearly 10 years in the office now – my main duties are to bark when Postman Tony comes, supervise lunch to see what’s on, keep the team amused, and to remind them when it’s time to go home for a walk. 11 “The times they are achangin” Bob Dylan 1964 “We are on Facebook and Twitter” Just Grenada Group 2013 We have always thought of ourselves as a bit different to other travel companies and people tell us it’s true. We have always done things in what might be called ‘the old-fashioned way’ It suits us and it seems to suit our clients. But times, and how we communicate, are changing, so we’ve bitten the bullet and put ourselves on Facebook and Twitter! To keep up to date with our news and latest offers, along with the latest developments with our islands and hotels, please follow us now! Search for us on Facebook as Just Grenada Group & Just Slovenia Follow us @justgrenada If, on the other hand, it’s not your thing, worry not. We will, of course, still be available at the other end of the phone, or by email, or by letter in an envelope with a stamp! Our Charities We have a long association with various charities in Grenada and as time goes by we have been able to help specific projects in other islands too. We are major supporters of the Bel Air Home for Children & Adolescents in Grenada. This amazing place provides shelter, care and encouragement to a number of children who have found themselves in distressed situations for a variety of reasons. We visit the home on every trip, collect clothes for the children, and have raised thousands of pounds over the years to help with their incredible work. We also support the GSPCA – providing welfare and treatment for abandoned animals – we sent our local Vet to Grenada a few years ago to work with the locals. Father Mulligan’s home for Boys is another Grenada charity which we support.
