AUTUMN IN THE AIR
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
In the early years of the church, most people never
availed themselves of once-in-a-lifetime penance. Yet
penitents were highly visible. They wore distinctive
garments or chains, and they were relegated to special
zones in the church. They might be dismissed from the
Sunday assembly after the Word, forbidden to join in
the
Prayer of the Faithful or the Eucharist. This dismissal
was done with great affection and tenderness as the
bishop laid his hands on the heads of the sinners. During
Lent almost everyone would identify with penitents by
clothing, insignia, or by following the penitents’ regular
diet. Rather than sit in judgment over them, the church
desired to intercede for them before the Lord. “Let
Mother Church weep for you and wash away your sins
with her tears,” said St. Ambrose to his penitents in
Milan. Ambrose liked to think of them as Jonah in the
whale, meditating on his errors. In a letter to his sister
he
said that Jonah is also a sign of Christ in
the tomb, and
so he had great faith in the penitents’
future
proclamation of the Resurrection with

Please contact Liz if you would like to help with the raffle in any

madre
(la Merced) ayuda fielmente en esa obra. Su
Iglesia no
puede hacer otra cosa sino lo mismo.

Volunteers for Sharing the Faith with Children:
We are grateful to our volunteers who helped strengthen our efforts to share the faith with the children. Our
mission is not only to offer faith formation on Sundays and Wednesdays at All Saints, but to evangelize our
children six days a week at nine different times in seven different public schools. We are in need of volunteers to help spread the
faith. If you are interested in sharing your faith with our children, contact Dan, Adriana, or Sra. Chavez at 713-864-2653 if you can
help. “We pray that you hear God’s call to work in his vineyard….”
Pre-Kinder & Kinder at All Saints:
Have you heard the discontent of little children during mass? These are children who do not understand what we proclaim and
celebrate. Sundays, starting Sept. 21 - May 3, 2015, while the parents attend mass, the children “celebrate” the Word of God with a
“lector” who shares the Gospel through story, music, prayer and activities for ages 3-5yrs in the St. Vincent de Paul building Room
#3 at 10:30 AM in English and 12:30 PM in Spanish. Register in Religion Education if you wish your child to attend.
Could you volunteer to bring the Good News to these children in a way they are content and can understand what God’s word
means? If so, contact the RE Office - 713-864-2653.
713/864-2653

St.Pio of Pietrelcina, O.F.M. Cap. commonly known as Padre Pio, was a friar, priest, stigmatist, and
mystic of the Roman Catholic Order of Friars Minor Capuchin. Padre Pio became famous for bearing
the stigmata for most of his life, which generated much interest and controversy around him. He is
now venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church. Padre Pio became a very well known priest.
Franciscan spirituality is characterized by a life of poverty, love of nature, and giving charity to
those in need. Franciscan prayer recognizes God's presence in the wonder of creation. This is seen
clearly in St. Francis' Canticle of the Sun. Franciscan spirituality is focused on walking in Christ's
footsteps, understanding God by doing what Christ asked, experiencing and sharing God. Later Padre
Pio became a spiritual director. He had five rules for spiritual growth: weekly confession, daily
Communion, spiritual reading, meditation, and examination of conscience. Padre Pio, who was
devotede to rosary meditations, said
"The person who meditates and turns his mind to God, who is the mirror of his soul, seeks to know his
faults, tries to correct them, moderates his impulses, and puts his conscience in order."
