The First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania has taken great care in assembling this information. If you have not been properly listed in these pages, please call 1.866.901.2372. 2013 at a GLANCE It seems like the hands of the clock move faster than ever at the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania. In searching for a quote to support this notion, we have to look no further than our childhood and the wise words of Dr. Seuss: “How did it get so late so soon? Its night before its afternoon. December is here before its June. My goodness how the time has flewn. How did it get so late so soon?” This phenomenon is certainly not unique to FCFP but before anymore time escapes us, we are proud to present our 2013 Annual Report. Each year, we create a theme that reflects our past experiences and challenges our future goals. 2013 sparked a new theme for our work by giving us “a million reasons to celebrate”. Already this year, FCFP and the Blaise Alexander Family Dealerships have facilitated $1 million in collective donations for nonprofits through Raise the Region. Clearly, that is the first million worth celebrating but we also raised $2.6 million in charitable giving in 2013. Even more importantly, we granted over $3.3 million last year and have budgeted to do the same in 2014. Another number in the millions worth celebrating is the financial stewardship of this organization, which has led us to surpass $80 million in assets under management as of December 31, 2013. Many nonprofits measure their worth in dollars and we are no exception. However, we also recognize that the most important numbers are those that represent the lives touched by FCFP. How many people have improved health and human service opportunities through our grants? How many students will go on to pursue a degree or some form of higher education because of our scholarships? How many communities have strengthened their civic programs and resources for the benefit of their residents because of our support? How many children have enhanced educational opportunities made possible through one of our 360 Funds? How many cultural and artistic programs have been supported by the Foundation and how many lives were enriched as a result? These are the important questions we ask ourselves everyday, and the real million reasons to celebrate at FCFP are found in their answers, displayed on the pages that follow. Thank you for helping continue the work of creating powerful communities through passionate giving. Sincerely, Jennifer D. WilsonMarshall D. Friends of the Foundation Fund T his annual fund provides important unrestricted support that allows us to provide a high level of expertise and service as we work with our nonprofit partners to meet the greatest needs of the residents of our region. A gift to this fund will ensure that the Foundation will continue to provide critical support to hundreds of nonprofits that improve the lives of our neighbors. Community Funds The Community Funds were created to enhance the quality of life in each of the regions that we serve. These funds allow the FCFP Board of Directors its greatest flexibility in making grants to the community. The Community Funds provide a permanent discretionary resource for nonprofits. Gifts to these funds address ever-changing needs—including future needs that cannot be anticipated today. Friends of Rider Park Fund Rider Park is one of Lycoming County’s and Pennsylvania’s greatest recreational areas—867 acres of protected land available to the public 365 days a year for hiking, trail running, mountain bike riding, cross country skiing and other low impact recreational activities. This Fund was established to provide grants from the fund’s principal and income to offset the operational costs of Rider Park. Charitable Gift Certificates Are you looking for a unique gift for that special someone? The Foundation offers an inspiring and convenient way to give, while helping to support the invaluable work of the nonprofit organizations in our community—a Charitable Gift Certificate. The certificates are available in increments of $25, $50 or $100 to share with family, friends and/or business associates. As a purchaser of a gift certificate, you receive an acknowledgement for tax purposes. The program works like any gift certificate: recipients of the certificates redeem them with the Foundation, directing the gift to a charity or charities, in our region, to benefit. The certificate has a one year expiration date. Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) Program This program allows businesses in Pennsylvania to make contributions to approved organizations and receive tax credits in return for their gifts. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania created the EITC Program in 2001. The Community Foundation has been an approved EITC organization since 2002, and grants through the program have provided area teachers with funding to bring exciting new educational opportunities to our students. Gifts to the EITC program fund: classroom visits and workshops with authors, artists, and performers; and equipment and materials for new, innovative programs that would not otherwise be funded. The Community Foundation is here to help you with your philanthropic needs. For information on how to contribute to an existing fund, contact the Development Office at 1.866.901.2372 or 570.321.1500. 4 David McGarvey, Cogan Station Mary McGarvey, Williamsport R. CALDER, JR. MD SCHOLARSHIP FUND “Because of Joe, I’m here today.” For Savannah Williams (lower left), a nursing student at the Pennsylvania College of Technology, the Joseph R. Calder, Jr. MD Scholarship Fund is allowing her to pursue the dream of being a nurse. Stephanie Calder (upper left) and her children established this fund in memory of their late husband and father to benefit students enrolled in medical programs. Dr. Calder dedicated over 30 years to the field of medicine in Williamsport, investing not only in patients, but in the education and personal development of everyone around him. After his passing, the Calders were flooded with letters sharing stories of how Dr. Calder not only saved individual lives, but also how he impacted the wellness of families and communities for generations. “Because of Joe, I’m here today,” these letters say. Scholarship recipient Williams is already beginning to extend Dr. Calder’s legacy; she believes “It’s a privilege to take care of others.” During Williams’ first hospital rotation, an older patient told her, “You’re going to be a great nurse.” 10 Boutique To You, Winfield Matthew Bowen, Shamokin Dam Olivia Bowen, Chevy Chase, MD Kay Bower, Berwick Mary and Dale Bower, Montoursville MariLee Bower, Watsontown Patricia and Quintan Bower, Cogan Station Peter Bower, Williamsport Roy Bower Jr., Millville Robert Bowers, Williamsport Debra Bowes, Montoursville Nancy and Donald Bowman, Mifflinburg Lorraine and Rich Boyle, Williamsport Michele Boyles, Williamsport Melissa Bozza, Coal Township Mary Bradley, Lock Haven John Brady, Danville Caroline Brady-Balliet, Montoursville Keith Braho, Murrysville Ian Brandau, Bloomsburg Susan and Christopher Branton, Williamsport Brass Alignment Inc., Williamsport Susan Braster, Hughesville Paul Braunegg, Williamsport Jessica Brazier, Lewisburg Bernard Bredbenner Sr., Williamsport * Debora Breining, Jersey Shore Jon Brennan, Milton Patti Breon, Sunbury Harriet and Thomas Bresenhan, Lewisburg Carol and David Bresticker, Williamsport Deborah Brevoort, North Bergen, NJ James Bricker, Mifflintown Donna and Douglas Bridge, Milton Alison Briggs, Nescopeck Marilyn Brill, Lewisburg Cindy and John Brindger, Williamsport Luz Briseno-Montez, Aurora, IL Mary Anne Britton, Selinsgrove Steve Britton, Williamsport Sara and Brian Broadt, Bloomsburg Norma Brobyn, Bloomsburg Luci Bromberg, Williamsport Susan and Richard Brook, Bloomsburg Joseph Broschart, Shamokin Dam June and George Brosious, Selinsgrove Deborah and Jerry Broskey, South Williamsport Angela Brouse, Lewisburg Christy Brouse, Lewisburg Albert Brown, Williamsport Carrie Brown, South Williamsport Erin Yust-Brown and Clifton Brown, Lewisburg Daisy Terry Brown, Truckee, CA Deborah and Robert Brown, Montoursville Gail Brown, Dushore Kristina Brown, Philipsburg Linda and Terry Brown, Pottsgrove Scott Brown, New Columbia Kathryn Brown-Wehr, Montoursville Susan Browning, Jersey Shore Deborah and Maurice Brubaker, Lewisburg Kristina Brubaker, Northumberland • • Bronze Bridge Society * Deceased 2013 DONORS Justin Bruce, New Castle John Brunette, South Williamsport Brush Valley Chamber of Commerce, Shamokin Kyle Bryan, North Irwin Brynwood Rentals, Lewisburg Lauren Bryson, Montgomery Linda Buck, Danville Tracy Buck, Watsontown Jeff Buckley, Selinsgrove Ruby Buckley, Danville Sandra Buckley, Danville Sarah Budd, South Williamsport Amanda Budman, Allenwood Sharon and Philip Buehrer, Williamsport Buffalo Valley Church of the Brethren, Mifflinburg Buffalo Valley Recreation Authority, Lewisburg John Bulger, Danville Bullfrog Brewery, Williamsport Georgia Burch, Williamsport Diane and John Burfeindt Jr., Cogan Station Marge and John Burfeindt Sr., Montoursville Jessica Burgess, Sunbury Marilyn and James Burget, Cogan Station Brian Burke, Selinsgrove Beth Burke-Cherwinski, Catawissa Connie Burkhart, Catawissa David Burkhart, Montoursville Gary Burkhart, Williamsport Kirsten Burkhart, Williamsport Laurie and Thomas Burkholder, Montoursville Pamela Burkholder, Williamsport Ruth Burnham, Lewisburg John Burns, Montoursville Lynda Burns, Mifflinburg Allison Burrell, Bloomsburg Kathleen and Matthew Burrows, Watsontown Lisa Busch, Lock Haven Louise and David Bush, Washingtonville Carol Butler, South Williamsport Nancy Butts, Williamsport • • • • • • C • C & E Containers, Inc., Jersey Shore C.E. District Ed Harrington and his family established a designated fund that will permanently grant to Hope Enterprises, an organization that is a front runner in providing community services to individuals with intellectual disabilities. During his time serving in the public school system, Ed worked with every child, from those with special abilities to valedictorians. He knows Hope President Jim Campbell from his time as an East Lycoming educator, and has long been impressed with the “excellent work he’s done for those with special needs over the years. Hope is designed to serve children as well as adults, and Jim believes that every child has a special place in this world,” Ed says. The Ed, Ann and Noel Harrington Fund ensures that promise and passion will continue to flow through Hope, like in the classroom pictured here. “I love the spontaneity these guys have,” says Jim Campbell. • Bronze Bridge Society * Deceased 15 GIVING for CHANGE ST COM SILVER CIRCLE f Pe ia • F IR SOCIETY TNERS HI P • o OUNDAT IO YF R PA N IT N MU Donna Elkin, Williamsport n n sylvan Substantial, ongoing giving by individuals, families, businesses or organizations to the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania is changing our community and our region forever. Each Pearl shares a common goal: to create powerful communities through passionate giving, because a collection of pearls is stronger than just one. At the inaugural luncheon, Pearls granted a total of $10,000 to Favors Forward, Camp Victory, and Daikon Family Life Services— Girls on the Run, and will continue this tradition, allocating at least $10,000 annually. Camp Victory (shown here) is a camp for children with diverse special needs; they poured the Pearls’ grant into a meal program that benefits every child in the camp. Grants like these support Lycoming and Union Counties, and as more women from these and other counties become Pearls, the wider the Pearls’ reach will extend. Davie Jane Gilmour and Sue Young, both founding Pearls, believe “that the women of this community will leave a lasting legacy,” and they are right. The work and passion of the Pearls will be passed down from generation to generation, just like a treasured strand of pearls. 18 2013 DONORS Dan Geary, Williamsport Ronald Gefert, Wilmerding Joseph Geffre, Williamsport Karen Gehers, Kreamer Sarah and Thomas Gehret, Williamsport Erin Gehron, Williamsport William Gehron, Williamsport Sam Geise, Northumberland Scott Gelnett, Northumberland Genetti Hotel & Suites/4th Street Grille & Ale House, Williamsport Carol and Mark Gentilucci, Danville Elizabeth George, Williamsport Lenora Georges, Williamsport Deanna Gephart, Jersey Shore Karon and Craig Gerace, Williamsport Eugenia and John Gerdes, Lewisburg Nanette and Thomas Gergel, Danville Angela Gerlinski, Lewisburg Susan Gerlinski, Lewisburg Terry Gerlinski, Lewisburg Elizabeth Gernant, Lewisburg Dorothy Gerring, Montoursville Joan Gerrity, Trout Run Patricia and John Gerstmyer, Kernersville, NC Nicole Gesselman, Beaver Springs Michelle and Jimmy Getkin, Danville Mike Getz, Muncy Tara Geyer, Williamsport Giant Food Stores, LLC, Carlisle Anita Gibbons, Williamsport Marlene Gi, Eagles Mere Cathy Gibson, Jersey Shore Lisa Gibson, Selinsgrove William Gibson Jr., Riverside Carol Giesen, Selinsgrove Mark Giesen, Northumberland James Gilfert, Sunbury Brian Gill, Red Bank, NJ Deborah Gillespie, Bloomsburg Rebecca Gillespie, Williamsport Luann Gilliland, Bloomsburg Sue and Roger Gilliland, Williamsport Betty Gilmour, Williamsport Davie Jane Gilmour, Montoursville Shaun Gilmour, Los Angeles, CA Ann Marie Gimbi, Hazleton Joan Gingrich, Williamsport Kathy and Domenic Giorgio, Bloomsburg Patricia and Jerry Girardi, Williamsport Terry Girdon, Williamsport Susan Girton, Williamsport Tammy Glaser, Williamsport Kimberly Glass, Bloomsburg Barbara Glassman, Nashua, NH Sylvia Gleason, Lewisburg Glenn O. When they wanted to extend the fund’s reach and legacy, they partnered with the First Community Foundation Partnership of PA because both “have been meeting community needs independently for decades,” says Albright President and CEO Shaun Smith. “ This partnership builds on both our strengths, encouraging us to work together to sustain healthy and productive communities.” Albright established this new organizational endowment fund with an initial gift of $25,274 as a permanent funding source in which the fund’s investment income would be granted back to Albright to further support staff education and training. In the beginning, donors granted toward staff education, and the existing fund focused on clinical training for Albright staff, as it did for Cindy Wolfe (above left), who started at Albright as a nursing assistant, and later became a licensed and then registered nurse. Over the years, it became apparent that the fund needed to extend to other staff developmental needs across Albright’s campuses as well. With the Albright Care Services Fund, Albright will honor both its staff and the residents across its campuses for years to come. • Bronze Bridge Society * Deceased 23 GIVING for CHANGE Susan Kilbride, Lewisburg Gerald Kilgus, Hughesville GIVING for CHANGE Andrew Kilpatrick, Williamsport Nancy and Jeffrey Kimball, Lewisburg Rob Kime, Selinsgrove Geraldine and James King, Winfield Kingdom Kidz, Inc., Milton Dianna Kinley, Jersey Shore Teresa Kinney, Linden Terri Kio, New Columbia Cecile Kirby, Middleburg Jan Carolyn and Daniel Kirby, South Williamsport Leah Kirchner, Danville Rachel and Quinn Kirk, Williamsport Victoria Kirk, Shermans Dale Laura Kirkland, Williamsport Toni Kissinger, Picture Rocks Kimberly and Kevin Kist Jr., Williamsport Jeanette Kitchen, Montgomery Ken Kitner, Allenwood Laurence KIees, Wiliamsport Beth Kline, Bloomsburg Clair Kline, Selinsgrove Kathryn and Robert Kline, Birdsboro Lisa Kline, Beavertown Ronald Kline, Beavertown William Kline, Williamsport Jay Klinefelter, Williamsport Vanessa Klingensmith, Bloomsburg Colleen Klinger, Cogan Station Linda and Bill Klinger, Watsontown Julie Klingerman, Bloomsburg Monica and Daniel Klingerman, Montoursville Pamela Klotz, Linden • Guy Klucevsek, Staten Island, NY Shirley and Oscar Knade Jr., Montoursville | 2013 DONORS Ann Knapp, South Williamsport Brenda Knauer, South Williamsport Wilfred Knecht, Williamsport Brian Knepp, Middleburg Teresa Knepp, Middleburg Tara Knight, Williamsport Richard Knoebel, Catawissa Thomas Knoebel, Williamsport Jean Knorr, Benton Fran Knott, Montoursville Andrew Knouse, Riverside Max Knouse, Riverside Patricia and Barry Knouse, Sunbury Charles Knowlden Jr., Williamsport James Knowlden, Williamsport Lyndsay Knupp, Shelburne, VT Harry Scott Knyrim, Williamsport Katherine Koch, Benton Rhonda Koch, Williamsport Steven Koch, Williamsport Kohl’s Department Store, Williamsport Phyllis Kokkila, Pittsburgh Kolb Net Works, Inc., Williamsport Bonita Kolb, Williamsport Sandra Koleno, Linden Kim Koncsol, York Donald Konkle Jr., Montoursville Karen Koons, Winfield Victor Koons, Danville Perry Koot, New Columbia Kenneth Kopf, Northumberland Sharon Koppel, Mifflinburg • BILL AND SIS FISH FUND FOR HOPE ENTERPRISES “Everything in here has hope in it.” Bill and Sis Fish established a designated fund that will be a permanent funding source for Hope Enterprises, an organization that enhances the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities. Each year, a portion of their fund will be granted to Hope in support of its financial needs. In Hope’s work center (pictured), individuals with disabilities are provided with meaningful employment, building skills to be successful with and without assistance. Hope is so meaningful to those whom it serves that after even one day of absence, individuals hug and embrace one another as in a homecoming upon returning to work the next day. “The concern we have for each other is deeply felt,” says Hope president Jim Campbell. Bill recalls visiting Hope whenever he had a bad day at work: “When I got out, I was 100% better,” he says. At the end of each visit, Campbell gives visitors a parting gift bag. “We’ll never let you go empty-handed,” he says, “Everything in here has hope in it.” 24 Linda and Elliott Korb, Milton Zdzislaw Kordecki, Cogan Station John Korol, Bloomsburg Darin Koss, Lewisburg Sarah and Joseph Kowalski, Turbotville Ellen Krajewski, Liberty Cynthia Krall, Montoursville Alex Kramer, Pennsdale Kimberly Kramm, Cogan Station Marge Kranz, Lewisburg Cody Kratzer, Sunbury Katie Kratzer, Selinsgrove Mike Kratzer, Sunbury Simon Krauss, Arlington, VA Michael Kreiner, Selinsgrove Roni Kreisher, Williamsport Craig Kremser, Montoursville Winnie and Mike Kremser, Montoursville Sharon and Robert Kri, Lewisburg Eileen Krichten, New Oxford Janet and Richard Kriebel, Benton Christine Kriner, Williamsport Mary Kropiewnicki, Orangeville Janae Krum, Riverside Marjorie Kuhns, New Columbia Brianna and Michael Kula, Sunbury Gail and Christopher Kulp, Montoursville Ella Jane Kunkle, Bethlehem Michele Kuntz, Muncy Robert Kurland, Danville Kelly Kurtz, South Williamsport Jennifer and Keith Kuzio, Williamsport Stanley Kuzio, Williamsport David Kyle, New Columbia Holly and Charles Kyle, Milton L Deborah and Victor La Valla, Canton, OH Sally and James Labenberg, Montoursville Jim Labenberg, Williamsport Nancy Lady, Montoursville Kathryn Laepple, Northumberland Charles Lafferty, Montoursville Sandra and Richard Lakey, Williamsport Deborah Lakis, South Williamsport Joanne Lalli, Williamsport Lala LaLonde, Wyalusing Barbara Lamade, Montoursville Jill and Michael Lamade, South Williamsport Lamar Advertising Co., Williamsport Brian Lambert, Hughesville Shirley Lambert, Williamsport Cheryl Lamey, Jersey Shore Robert Lamey, Lock Haven Mollie Landers, Portland, ME Anna Landis, Thompsontown Betty Landon, Canton Jasmine Landry, Philadelphia Robert Landzettel, Mahwah, NJ Greg Lannan, Turbotville Shawn Lape, Jersey Shore Robert Lario, Williamsport Larson Design Group, Inc., Williamsport • • • • • • Bronze Bridge Society * Deceased 2013 DONORS Brenda and Donald Larson, South Williamsport Lesley Larson,GIVING Montoursvillefor CHANGE Marjorie Larson, Jersey Shore Paul Larson, Duboistown Christy and David Lassiter, Montoursville Sandy and John Laszlo, Norcross, GA Angella and Joshua Laubach, Northumberland Darlene Laubach, New Columbia Drew Laudenslager, Montoursville Chuck Laudermilch, Bloomsburg Joanne Lauer, Selinsgrove Bronwyn Laughner, Williamsport Alexander Laun, Cambridge, MA Jill Lavallee, South Williamsport Kaitlin Lavin, Santa Monica, CA Lindsay Lawer, Media Christopher Lawless, Milton Dee Lawrence, Sunbury Russ Lawrence, State College Ann Lawton, Watsontown Renee Laychur, Williamsport Mark Lazarus, Milton Jim Lazorka, Montoursville Katie Leach, Weatherly Helen and Eugene Learn, Jersey Shore Deborah Leathers, Cogan Station Judith and W. In the first fundraiser of its kind, North Central Pennsylvania donated over $800,000 in one night, demonstrating the true spirit of philanthropy. The Blaise Alexander Family Dealerships set a benevolent precedent by offering $125,000 in matching funds for the 4,300 gifts made that in that 24-hour period. Generous monetary prizes and incentives, sponsored by Auto Trakk ($50,000), Larson Design Group ($10,000), and PNC Bank ($2,500) further inspired donors in the spirit of giving. All of these donations were made online through a website that detailed the missions of each nonprofit organization, running a live tally of the gifts raised for each one. “Each donor made an average gift of $25—we’re blown away by how many people participated in this event,” say Blaise Alexander’s sons, Adam and Aubrey Alexander, who help run operations at many of the Alexander Family Dealership locations. “I think prior to this, folks didn’t know how to give or who to trust, but when Raise the Region was announced, they knew that if they gave to this event, it would go to a good cause,” said Adam. ),567&20081,7<)281'$7,213$571(56+,32)3(116</9$1,$ • Bronze Bridge Society * Deceased 29 GIVING for CHANGE Suzanne Musselman, Danville Anne Mussina, Montoursville Cynthia Mussina, Williamsport Pat Ackerman’s illness prevented her from continuing work with the Thomas Beaver Free Library, her husband Ken and their sons (upper left) wanted to let no time lapse in Pat’s involvement, so they established a designated fund that will permanently grant the Pat Ackerman “Guys Read” Program for Young Boys at the Thomas Beaver Free Library in Danville, PA, a program designed to reinforce the love of reading over the summer. The program is “a near perfect reflection of who Pat Ackerman is. It reflects her passion for the importance of reading, the importance of books,” Ken says. “Guys Read” pairs Danville high school male athletes with boys in third through sixth grades, focusing on the mentorship of younger boys because according to Thomas Beaver Free Library librarian Bonnie White, young boys are at high risk for losing interest in reading, especially during the summer. “Guys Read” marries the passions and interests of the Ackermans, generating an impactful partnership between the library and school system as well. Ken and his sons believe that the “Guys Read” Program fulfills lifelong dreams, and hope it will help the young men and boys of Danville realize their dreams, too. 34 SFGalleria, Berkeley, CA Brad Sgrignoli, Herndon Barbara Shaffer, Bloomsburg Beth Shaffer, Lewisburg Jeanne and Michael Shaffer, Coal Township Margaret and Mohammed Shafique, Williamsport Diane Shaheen, Lenox, MA Lee Shamory, Middleburg Harriet Shane, Sunbury Becky and Kristopher Shaner, Hughesville Cindy Shaner, Hughesville Blair Shangraw, Montoursville Anne Shapiro, Lewisburg Judy and Steven Sharer, Waterford Sharon Sharr, Watsontown Mary and Gordon Shaw Jr., Williamsport Jan Shaw-Flamm, St. Paul, MN Glenn Shawl, Hughesville David Shay Sr., Montoursville Jean and Mike Shea, Montoursville Kathryn Shea, Mt. When Union County gathered to brainstorm ideas for their Bicentennial, commissioner John Showers (upper left) recalls that they initially wanted to plant trees for the celebration. But Jennifer Wilson, President and CEO of FCFP, instead suggested that life-sized buffalo would make for a bold commemoration. The Parade of Buffalo came together as a herd during the 4th of July parade in Union County, with communities voting for their favorite buffalo later that year in October, prior to the Great Bison-tennial Debate on Market Street in Lewisburg. Monetary donations were accepted during public viewings for the Parade of Buffalo and counted as votes toward residents’ favorite buffalo. The Parade of Buffalo benefited county residents as all proceeds from the project and its festivities contributed to the Union County Community Fund, a permanent funding source for Union County nonprofits through the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania. • Bronze Bridge Society * Deceased 39 GIVING for CHANGE • Williamsport Community Woodshop, Williamsport The Williamsport Home, Williamsport Williamsport Independent Media-WXPI-Williamsport Community Radio, Williamsport Williamsport Mounted Foundation Inc., Williamsport Williamsport Moving Company, Inc., Williamsport Williamsport West Veterinary Hospital, LLC, Williamsport Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce, Williamsport Linda Williard, Northumberland Mary Williard, Mifflinburg Lisa and John Willoughby, Lewisburg Lawrence Wilner, Castle Rock, CO Ann L.
