On the Other side Of the Glass
On the other side of the Glass
2006 Annual Report
Silvery fish circle a remarkable reef, a
dolphin’s splash surprises, and seabirds fly
on water’s underside. Behind glass, the
wonders of the world of water
appear magical before visitors’ eyes…
But the real magic takes place
on the exhibit’s other side.
When people connect with animals, enthusiasm sparks.
Outlooks are transformed, volunteers galvanized, youth inspired.
Discovery spawns action, and opportunity leads to dreams realized.
In this annual report, we take you beyond the glass
for a glimpse of programs that create community,
commitment, and pride. You’ll see how connecting people
and animals changes lives. We hope you’re surprised!
Dear Friends
Our 25th anniversary year was a time to celebrate, and also to reflect
on a quarter century of connecting people to the aquatic world. While the
challenges to our marine ecosystems have grown since the National Aquarium
in Baltimore opened its doors in 1981, our dedication and resolve to spark
stewardship has not. Behind the glass, the National Aquarium in Baltimore is
now home to 16,000 amazing animals. Beyond the glass, the Aquarium has
connected people locally to the Chesapeake Bay watershed and globally to
other critical aquatic habitats through education programs and work in the field.
This year was also a time of notable milestones. After exhaustive preparations
for a week-long inspection, the Aquarium was once again accredited by the
Association of Zoos and Aquariums, confirming that we adhere to high standards
of animal care and display. Volunteers provided an unprecedented level of service
(more than 113,000 hours); and the Marine Animal Rescue Program rehabilitated
and released its 75th stranded animal back to its ocean habitat.
These successes — and the many others described in this report — demonstrate
that the Aquarium has evolved over the last quarter century, beyond its critical
early role as an economic engine for the City. Today, we continue to take
great pride in attracting millions of visitors to the region but also in serving our
community as a cultural resource, an aquatic education center, and a steward of
the environment.
Your support remains vital to our cause. With your help, we can continue
to delight, engage, and educate our visitors. We are deeply grateful to all the
friends, partners, and donors who have given their support during our first
25 years.
Thank you.

Aquarium on Wheels is a driving force for the local
high school students who participate and for the community.
Year-round, this intensive work-study program puts dozens of Baltimore
youth on track for science careers, and sparks creativity, responsibility, and
self-sufficiency. Students use their knowledge to produce an original aquatic
stage show, and then take it on the road for performances at local libraries
each summer. With a living lab, laughter, and artifacts, the teens engage and
entertain City children, and their enthusiasm inspires another generation.

The Marjorie Lynn Bank Lecture Series
annually brings preeminent biologists, naturalists, and
performers to the Aquarium for the residents of our region.
Throughout the series, author E.O. Wilson has revealed his latest research,
while entertainer-scientists like Bill Nye have delighted children and animal
conservationists like Jack Hanna have inspired action. The late Marjorie Lynn
Bank, an Advisory Board member and photographer, leaves the simple
legacy that knowledge of the environment is a gift that must be shared.

Animal Care Science
The Aquarium hosted the 13th
Annual Association of Reptilian
and Amphibian Veterinarians
Conference, which included
workshops and presentations by
Aquarium staff, as well as the first
National Aquarium in Baltimore
Animal Training Conference.
Both events served to advance
knowledge of animals and
their care.

Crowds for Corwin
Animal Planet’s Emmy Awardwinning TV personality Jeff Corwin
captivated a sell-out crowd of
nearly 1,300 in the Lyn P. Meyerhoff
Amphitheater in 2006. During
the most successful fundraising
event of the year for the Aquarium,
Corwin shared stories of his
wildlife encounters, signed books,
and engaged children with his
enthusiasm for animals.

The Henry Hall Scholarship Fund creates
a formula in which opportunity adds to success for
Baltimore youth.
Now in its 25th year, this remarkable program offers annual scholarships
for excursions and learning labs, internships, and summer camps. College
scholarships even help fund science degrees. Henry Hall scholars receive
a chance to pursue their dreams, thanks to the legacy of the late African
American engineer. It’s living proof that one man’s foresight can educate
and inspire well beyond one lifetime.

With water, dirt, and a little “special attention,” the
Schoolyard Spartina: Wetland Nursery
Program grows more than marsh grasses for the
Chesapeake Bay.
It also cultivates our future naturalists. Students at 11 area middle schools
construct a brackish pond, maintain a healthy ecosystem, and raise
hundreds of seedlings and native fish. Daily monitoring and water quality
testing teach lessons for life and kindle the discovery that it’s within reach
to make a difference not just today, but tomorrow.

Before ecosystems disappear, the Aquarium community

Restoration Projects, along with others like it, are
aimed at rebuilding Bay habitats using native grasses.
Aquarium staff partner with State and Federal naturalists to organize the aid
of as many as 1,000 conservation-minded volunteers. Through 10,000 hours
planting half a million seedlings, average citizens have transformed these
important landscapes of the Eastern Shore. Hope for our planet is buoyed
when grassroots efforts turn the tide.

Leading by Example
The Aquarium took a leadership
role in wetlands restoration. At Fort
McHenry, 400 volunteers removed
an amazing 44,000 pieces of
debris and improved the habitat
for native species. At Little Creek
Amphibious Base and Dam Neck
Annex in Virginia, teams surveyed,
stabilized, and planted 1.5 acres of
coastal sand dunes.

The Volunteer Program gives the Aquarium its
human side. Nearly 1,800 committed volunteers donated
more than 113,000 hours of their time and many of their
talents to bring the Aquarium to life before visitors’ eyes.
Volunteers do almost every job imaginable – from taking care of animals
(even if it requires an underwater dive) to serving as exhibit guides. Specially
trained high school volunteers educate, entertain, and inspire. Through their
work, volunteers foster a sense of community; they instill pride.

Major Giving
Donors responded overwhelmingly
in 2006, perhaps recognizing
that admissions cover only 68%
of costs. One hundred percent
of the Board participated in
the fundraising campaign. New
business partners such as Dex
Imaging invested in conservation
education initiatives, while
individuals like Mary Catherine
Bunting made a grant for free
admissions and Mike Curran
donated a blue hyacinth macaw.

Volunteer High
Volunteerism reached an all-time
high this year: 1,791 residents of
Maryland, DC, and 15 other states
contributed an unprecedented
number of hours – more than
113,000 in all. Exhibit guides, divers,
and herpetology and aviculture
assistants significantly increased
their hours, bringing the total
value of all volunteer service to
over $2 million.
