Klaipeda Brochure
Klaipėda
Klaipėda is the third biggest city in Lithuania, with a population of around 180 000 people. The town of Klaipėda Memel was founded in 1252. Klaipėda is a unique Lithuanian
city by virtue of its colourful and turbulent history and also because the Old Town‘s architectural style is similar to many western European cities with which it had close links.
Situated on the coast of the Baltic Sea Klaipėda, with its rich history, traditions, cultural life, unique architecture, has become an outstanding tourism attraction centre.
Moreover, the Curonian Spit, included in the UNESCO Heritage List, the charming and
picturesque resorts, excellent recreational facilities and environs within the city‘s outskirts offer unforgettable and long-lasting impressions for those who visit these places.
Young, pushing forward, liberal, open-minded, tolerant, bright, ambitious, and perhaps a bit crazy – these are the words that are most often used to describe the city of
Klaipėda. There are many who try to unravel the mystery of Klaipėda, a leading city in
Lithuania, rightly known as the capital of western Lithuania.

SIGHTSEEING
1 Theatre square. This is the heart of the
city. There is a sculpture of Anna von
Tharau in the fountain in the middle
of the square. The monument is dedicated to Simon Dach, a German poet
who was born in Klaipėda. Anna was
the girl that the poet fell in love with at
first sight. However, she was engaged
to another man. Simon Dach dedicated
a poem to her and called it “Anna von
Tharau”.
2 Aukštoji Street. In this street you will see
the oldest and the most beautiful buildings of the city, dating from the middle
of the 18th century. They are warehouses which were built in the fachwerk-style. The tiny downtown houses
and fachwerk – styled warehouses are
being used by various artists – writers,
artists and photographer.
3 Didžioji Vandens Street. The name of
the street comes from the time when
there used to be another arm to the
Danės river.
1

8 Nearby “Meridianas” there is yellow
house built at the beginning of the
20th century. There is the Klaipėda City
Coat of Arms on this house Tiltų Str. 1.
This little boy on the wall is Cupid and
is an expression of all the citizens’ affection for their town. On the other
side of the building there is a sculp
ture “The Pot Full of Money” which
indicates the place of the first “Memel
Savings Bank” (Sculptor I. Šuliak).
4
9 Sculpture “Views of the city” on the
Jono Street created by the sculptor
A. Bosas. This has become the symbol
of the old town. We ask you to imagine
that this tiny brass house shelters the
people who used to live in the town.
Fairy tale dragons seem to be protecting them. They are all in one and the
same place – those that built, created
and lived in the medieval town.
4 The Culture Communication Centre
and Fachwerk – style buildings. This
is one the most well-known places
in Klaipėda for its cultural events. In
this complex of buildings there are
equipped craft and art workshops.
Here you can see how wood, ceramics,
textile, paintings, graphics production
are made step by step.
5 The sculpture “Slibinas” (The dragon)
decorating the wall opposite the gallery “Pėda” is as if mystery immortalization of the legend which reveals the
origin of Klaipėda name. The creature
is crawling down the wall and at the
same time rainwater is pouring down
its mouth and gathering into a huge
footprint below (Sculptor V. Karčiauskas).
10 “Mouse” sculpture you will find next
to the “Kurpiai” Jazz Club. It is not a
simple mouse. A modest 17 cm high
creation made out of bronze and stone,
on the opinion of the authors is – magic. A minor sculpture is surrounded by a
bronze band with spells: “Convert your
ideas into words – words will become
magic”. One may only whisper into the
ear of the “thaumaturge” and good
will is going to become true (Sculptor
S. Jurkus, S. Plotnikovas).
6
6 John‘s Hill. Fragment of Klaipėda‘s system of fortification.
7 “Meridianas”. The ship was built in
1948 in Finland and is now one of the
most beautiful sights of Klaipėda. The
Klaipėda Navigation School used the
4

sailing vessel for training purposes.
When the vessel was laid up, it was
turned into a restaurant and moored
near the Danė River bank.
Near “Meridianas” on the house nr. 8 in
Kalvių Street is sitting chimney sweep.
Legend tells that he brings happiness.
In the house wall is inserted sweep’s
button, if you touch it will bring you
luck (Sculptor K. Pūdymas).
5
11 “The Cat of the Old Town”, the bronze
and granit sculpture created by R. Midvikis, started its life in Kalviai Street in
1980. The cat is a very special inhabitant of the Old town – rub its tail and
be sure that all your secrets wishes
become true at once.

sculpture.
13 The Arch – monument to the United
Lithuania built to commemorate the
time when the Klaipėda region joined
the rest of Lithuania in 1923 (Sculptor
A. Sakalauskas).
14 The Post Office built in 1893 is one of
the most elegant buildings in the city.
A modern set of concert bells – the
carillon is assembled in the 42 m high
tower of the Post Office building. It is
the largest musical instrument of its
kind in Lithuania. Each Sunday, sharp
at noon, the bell music is played here.
On Liepų Street you can find different architecture style buildings here:
Jugend, Neogothic and Neoclassicism.

16 Lietuvininkų square. There is a statue
commemorating Martynas Mažvydas,
the author of Catechisms, the first
book published in Lithuanian (Sculptor
R. Midvikis).
17 Go down on Žvejų Street, cross the
revolving bridge over the canal, which
dates back to 1855, and you will get
into the Cruise Ship Terminal, opened
in 2003. It is a place where majestic
cruise ships stop for a short time to
visit Klaipėda city and Lithuania. Citizens and city guests love to stroll here
and spend some peaceful moments on
Danės river quay. This place is decorated with the sculptural composition
“Childhood Dream” which embodies
the most impressive and the most
significant childhood dreams (Sculptor
S. Jurkus).
