Nan Chiau High School
Aligned to the Vision, Mission and Strategic Thrusts of Nan Chiau High School, Energy Efficiency (EE) 3-year action plans are drawn out by the
School Leaders/Steering Committee. The objectives and initiatives in the plans were communicated to all teachers and students. Supporting
programmes were planned and executed by the student-Green Ambassadors.
Project Description
Nan Chiau High School’s EE policy is based on its 3-year Strategic Thrusts which is aligned to the Ministry of Education’s School Excellence
Model assessment rubrics. After reviewing its past annual energy consumption, the school set a target to reduce its annual electricity consumption
per capita by 0.3% per year.
In 2013/2014, Nan Chiau High School underwent major renovation. Energy efficiency was a key consideration in its renovation works, where the
school
• Used energy-saving PLC and LED lightings at the new gate arch, canteen, library, park square and auditorium;
• Re-configured fans and lightings by zones;
• Replaced existing air-conditioning system with energy efficient ones in the library;
• Installed timers to control lightings; and
• Installed motion-detectors in all washrooms to control lightings and wall fans.
Aside from installing automatic controls on its lighting and fans, Nan Chiau High School also stipulates policies on the usage of energy-using
equipment. Take for example, in the school hall, with activity involving less than 1 level of students, High Volume Low Speed fans (HVLS) are used
instead of the air-conditioning system.
Nan Chiau High School takes a step more to instil EE awareness among its stakeholders (i.e. teachers, students, parents). Teachers participated
in EE-related training such as the EEA workshop and Envirofest 2014 while students took part in Environmental Champions workshop, Panasonic
NEA-Workshop and Global Youth Seminar 2014. Aside from incorporating EE objectives and materials in both Integrated Programme (IP) and
non-IP curriculum, students Green Ambassadors also organised EE trainings and exhibitions to facilitate exchange on EE-related information.
To reach out to the parents, students are also required to participate in Nan Chiau High school’s annual Green Home Challenge audit, which
involves having both students and parents in monitoring their home energy consumption for a week.
Results
Through concerted efforts, the school has reduced its annual electricity consumption per capita per year by 0.4% and 0.2%, in 2013 and 2014
respectively, despite a series of renovation and upgrading works. Their EE projects continue to see active participation by all staff and students.
