Jackie Gage Group
A velvet voice, rich as smooth wine... San Jose’s Jackie Gage is
the Sade of jazz; she possesses a musical grace that channels
torch singers of decades past, mixing elements of jazz, soul,
and modern R&B into her sound.
As a 2014 Jazz Search
West finalist, she has
been seen at nationally
recognized
venues
Yoshi’s Oakland, the
Freight and Salvage
in Berkeley, and
The Sound Room in
Oakland—with notable
past
performances
at the Fillmore Jazz
Festival (2015), San Jose Jazz Summer Fest (2013, 2012), and
Berkeley Juneteenth (2015, 2014) among many other venues.
She grew up surrounded by icons Billie Holiday and Dionne
Warwick, and grew fond of singing their lovely, and haunting
tunes--those that are beautifully classified as torch songs. The
mixture of powerful big bands and intimate combos, oddmeter melodies loved by Burt Bacharach, and smooth solos
from live instruments fueled her identity. This modern sound
is a testament to her daring perception of what “Jazz” is today. Among her musical endeavors, Gage founded Fatale, a
California music house focused on presenting and promoting

female artists. 
Gage has created a musical identity in her own vein. She recently
relocated to NYC, and can be seen visiting California regularly,
touring the state yearly from Sacramento to San Diego.
Her music has been heard internationally, from KCSM, KCRW
and Hawaii’s CUH, all the way to Jazz FM in England.

Michael Rabinowitz Quartet
Although the bassoon had been used in jazz on a rare basis
since Don Redman and Frankie Trumbauer in the 1920s, Michael
Rabinowitz is the first jazz musician ever to specialize on the
difficult instrument. He played clarinet in junior high school
but switched to bassoon in high school. He played locally in
New Haven, studied with Sal Mosca, and after college spent
two years in Europe. Upon his return, he recorded on part
of an Ira Sullivan Muse record (1981) and with Eddie Buster.
Rabinowitz moved to New York in 1986, was part of the avantgarde group Mosaic in 1988, and performed Charles Mingus'
"Epitaph" with Gunther Schuller in 1989. Michael Rabinowitz We welcome bassoonist Michael Rabinowitz and his Quartet

Mala Waldron Group
Mala Waldron is a native of NYC whose first paid gig was
playing keys and singing back-up vocals with a local R&B
band, "Liquid Pleasure" at the Elk's club at age 15. Shortly after
joining the band, they were signed to a record deal with RCA
records. She later enrolled at SUNY, Old Westbury to study
jazz piano, voice & composition with Makanda Ken McIntyre,
Richard Harper, Warren Smith and Amina Claudine Myers,
ultimately earning a B.A. Degree. Her career has enabled Mala
to share her music all over the world in such places as Japan,
France, Italy, Belgium, Russia and most recently Belarus.
Mala has performed in numerous international tours and
festivals including the Hennessy-Moet Asian XOXO Jazz Tour
(with shows in China, Taiwan & Malaysia), the Catania Jazz

Diet Coke Women in Jazz Festival (JALC) opening for Patrice
Rushen. As an educator, Mala has done vocal workshops in
Italy, and participated in the WBGO Kids Jazz Concert Series
at the Newark Museum. She was featured in the recently
published book: "Giving Birth to Sound: Women in Creative
Music" (Renate da Rin and & William Parker editors) and
can be seen in the documentary film, 'The Girls in the Band"
directed by Judy Chaikin. Recordings as a featured artist

Alison's love for music began early on, and by age 8 she was

Mike Freeman Zona Vibe
Vibraphonist Mike Freeman has been hailed as "masterful”, a
"superb" vibes player, and “wildly talented” for work with his
own groups and performances as a featured member of other
notable groups. Energetic, rhythmic, soulful, and melodic,
Mike’s performances have taken him from North America and
Europe, to the Azores, Caribbean, and South America. His six
recordings of original music (ranging from jazz, Latin Jazz,
salsa, Brazilian, fusion, and R&B) have gained national and
international attention, have been both Grammy and Latin
Grammy entries, and received extensive radio airplay charting
on jazz, contemporary jazz, and world music radio. Mike
Freeman & Spellbound's 1985 self-titled debut recording was
followed by the drive-time success of “Street Shuffle.” “Wiggle
Stomp" reflects a deeper immersion into the Latin music scene
that, for him, began in the mid-1990s. On “In the Zone,” Mike
brings salsa forms into a jazz context. "The Vibesman" 2012,
takes that exploration
further with a set of
music that captured the
attention of many. His
newest production “Blue
Tjade” (a tip of the hat to
Cal Tjader) blends some
of his early Spellbound
writing styles into
clave-based music. Past
performance highlights
as a leader include
the Trinidad & Tobago
Steelpan & Jazz Festival, Festival Internacional (Terciera,
Azores), Central Park’s Harlem Meer concert series in New York
City, performing for Flood Relief in Des Moines, Iowa, Joslyn Art
Museum’s Jazz on the Green in Omaha, NE, and the Hennessy
Greenwich Village, JVC Newport (at Saratoga) Jazz Festivals. 
