I like to hear visitors’ reactions and find out what they like and what we can improve. I’m greeted almost everywhere by happy smiles and get the impression that visitors feel at home on the Dalsland Canal, they enjoy the peace and the beautiful countryside and they like to chat for a while with our lock-keepers. But to find out what people really think, we asked a consultancy to carry out a more scientific survey at the end of last year’s canal season. The results are very encouraging. Our guests had some comments and ideas that we will naturally consider carefully, but the vast majority were very positive in their replies. 89 per cent of visitors were happy with their tour of the canal and one in four chose to stay between 11 and 16 nights. More than nine out of ten were pleased with the reception they got at our lock stations and some even felt that the reply options were inadequate and wrote their own glowing comments about our friendly and helpful lock keepers. The picturesque countryside is the main reason that tourists choose to visit us. We have no plans to make any changes there. But there are a few other things that can make a popular canal even better. These are areas we are working on all the time. You can read more about what’s new on the Dalsland Canal at www.dalslandskanal.se and follow us on Facebook. Welcome to the Dalsland Canal! We can enjoy the countryside in peace and quiet here”. Olle, Annika and Malin Apelqvist from Varberg, were enjoying the tranquillity of the canal as they passed through the lock in Upperud. There is a third-generation member of the Apelquist family aboard as well, but she was taking a nap when we met up with them. “This is the second time we’ve come on holiday to the Dalsland Canal and we will definitely be back again,” said There are numerous well-run guest marinas on the canal. This one is in Upperud. + Olle. “This summer we headed up to Töcksfors and went on long walks to explore the surrounding area. Now we’re heading home again.” The Cushing family from Torslanda, outside Gothenburg, are relaxing by the jetty in Köpmannebro, right at the start of the Dalsland Canal. In a few minutes’ time they intend to set off on their canal adventure. But they’re not planning to sail there and back. ‘We’re really looking forward to this, especially the kids,” says their mother Karin, currently enjoying a cup of coffee on deck. “We’re doing a round tour. First we plan to explore the canal as far as Ed, then the boat will be transported by lorry to the coast, so that we can sail back home to Torslanda. It’s going to be really exciting.” Her husband Jeremy turns up with the lock tickets and brochures. The narrow bridge over the canal opens up, and the family’s sailing tour can begin. A similar tour, but in the opposite direction, has just been completed by a group of five families: the Wallins, Karlsson-Silvéns, Karlssons and Anderssons (times two), all from Kungälv. We had the place to ourselves “We are used to holidaying on the coast, where you never get a pontoonside mooring in a marina. The boats are moored several rows deep. When we arrived at Lake Stora Le, we were astonished to find outstanding natural moorings with rocks just like those on the west coast, and prepared campsite cooking areas. But we had the place to ourselves! It was wonderful! The children preferred sleeping in the lake-side camping shelters rather than aboard the boat.” The trip continued to Töcksfors and Östervallsskog. “It was the same there. Outstanding countryside and very few boats. The children enjoyed themselves opening the manually-operated bridges. They found it really exciting.” company immensely, and there’s plenty of banter: “If he’s the last one into the lock, he’ll be so annoyed. He always wants to be in the lead.” “Make sure you take off the baseball cap for the photograph.” It makes me wonder how they keep the peace throughout the boat trip. “So far, it hasn’t been a problem. We have enjoyed ourselves immensely, and when we get back home again, we’re planning a joint crayfish party in the garage.” A trip to the Snäcke Canal We met the families just south of Bengtsfors. They were very impressed, but realised that there was still much to see. “Today, we’re planning a trip to Laxsjöns camping site, where we will meet up with more of our friends. Then we’re planning a trip on the Snäcke Canal before heading home again.” There were plenty of laughs during our conversation. The families from Kungälv seem to enjoy each other’s , GI<J<IM@E>8 :LCKLI8C?<I@K8>< “Managing such a significant heritage feature is a great responsibility. The aqueduct is a unique construction. If Nils Ericson had not been such an expert canal and railway designer, he would probably never have been given permission to build it. The fact that it is still working today, without any radical restoration work, is a tribute to his technical genius.” CANAL DIRECTOR BENNY RUUS IS CLEARLY IMPRESSED when he talks about the remarkable aqueduct at Håverud and its creator, Nils Ericson. “He even considered the fact that we would have to repaint it, about 100 years after the grand opening. The design allows it to be “rolled” to the side fairly easily.” In the mid-19th Century, the intention was to make the canal the main communications route through the roadless areas of Dalsland and wes- - tern Värmland. It seemed like a very good idea at the time, since it would only be necessary to dig short stretches of canal to link a series of long, narrow lakes. But then they hit on the problem of the Håverud rapids. Everyone thought they would prove an impossible obstacle - everyone except Nils Ericson, that is. A respected name “At the time, Nils Ericson was a highly respected name. He had redesigned the Trollhätte Canal and the locks in Stockholm. He had built the Saima Canal in Finland, and he drew up the guidelines for the Swedish railway network. When he stated that it would be possible to use an aqueduct to take traffic past the Håverud rapids, not many dared to argue with him. Even the sceptics kept quiet”, says Benny Ruus. The cargo boats disappeared So the aqueduct was built, and in 1868, King Charles XV and his entourage arrived for the grand opening of the Dalsland Canal. Now it would be possible to carry sawn timber and iron ore by cargo boat between Lake Stora Le and the town of Köpmannebro. But only ten years or so later, the railway arrived in Dalsland, and one after another, the cargo boats were decommissioned. “Yes, the history of the canal as a freight route was very brief. A small number of boats continued to ope- rate right up to the 1980s, but they were few and far between. But that isn’t something to make leisure boat enthusiasts shed many tears. Now they have the whole canal all to themselves”, Benny Ruus concludes. Did you know... Dalslands Kanal AB also has boats and cottages to rent. The difference in level between lakes Stora Le and Vänern is 66 metres Lake Stora Le is still home to the fourhorn sculpin, a species that dates back to before the ice age. The aqueduct, which was built by Bergsunds Mekaniska Verkstad in Stockholm, contains 33,000 rivets. The canal has 31 locks divided between 17 lock stations. The length of the canal is 250 kilometres, of which just 12 kilometres is excavated. 2,792 steamboats passed through the canal in 1905, as well as hundreds of sail freighters and barges . ;8CJC8E;JB8E8CÆ)'() < CfZbj(0Xe[)'ZXefecpY\ZX The tumbling water can be heard in the background – a calming sound that that you soon forget. The canal itself is mirror-flat. Sheep are bleating, birds are chirping excitedly and a squirrel scrambles quickly up a pine tree. Idyllic is the only way to describe locks 19 and 20. The tumbling water can be heard in the background – a calming sound that that you soon forget. The canal itself is mirror-flat. Sheep are bleating, birds are chirping excitedly and a squirrel scrambles quickly up a pine tree. Idyllic is the only way to describe / locks 19 and 20. Most of the lock stations are named after the nearby community, but not the 19th and 20th. Maybe because we are in the middle of nowhere. Or at least, the middle of the forest, a long way from civilisation. The nearest paved road is around a kilometre away. This is home to a young lock-keeping couple, Josefin Mölnteg and Simon Bjaaland, who have a busy day ahead. They have been told on the radio that eight boats are on their way from Bengtsfors, and a group of canoeists are also heading this way from the south. “We’ll take them as they come. Most people obviously aren’t in a hurry,” says Simon. When the first boat slides into the lock the skipper asks Josefin and Simon to ask the man on the next boat how Elfsborg did in the match yesterday. It turns out that this poor football fan has been reminded of his team’s defeat at every lock station. The atmosphere is open and friendly, and the crews all greet each other. Things can’t get much better on a fine summer’s day in the middle of the forest in Dalsland. Josefin and Simon live in the little lock keeper’s cottage all year round. Living here in winter G\i$M`c_\cd_Xj dXee\[k_\cfZb ]fi+/j\Xjfej Xcc\[`[pcc`Z must be challenging. The snow can be up to half a metre deep and the thermometer drops well below zero. “This life suits us perfectly,” says Josefin. “We’re both studying to be teachers at Karlstad University, so lock-keeping is our summer job. But naturally you’ve got to have similar interests. Neither of us wants to live in the city. This summer they have also acquired some sheep. A ewe and two lambs gambol at the side of the canal, completing the idyllic scene. “For next summer we’re thinking of getting some chickens. Then we can sell fresh eggs to the canal tourists.” Josefin and Simon have a couple of years behind them as lock keepers. But some have been around for much longer. In Bengtsfors we meet PerVilhelm Emanuelsson, who has been looking after the lock since 1965. “Originally it was my wife who managed the lock while I worked at the local mill, so I came here as soon as I had finished. In those days the boats had to pay one krona each to pass through.” Per-Vilhelm also recalls the days when there were working boats on the canal. “We often had timber boats coming through. They were small boats that towed bundles of logs along the canal.” He has witnessed a minor revolution over the years, particularly in the size of the boats. “In the 70s and 80s we could get seven boats into a lock basin. Now we are lucky if we manage two.” The reason he still carries on is all the friendly people he gets to meet. “The crews are nearly always happy and positive. That makes you happy too. And lots of them remember me. I’m 81 now and I’ve often thought that this will have to be the last summer, but then the canal tourists say: ‘But we want to see you next year as well’. We’ll have to see,” says Per-Vilhelm. “It’s not so hard now the locks have been electrified. They used to be manually operated. In those days you could lose 11 kilos over a summer.” 0 8j`]dX[\]fiZXef\`jkj “There’s nothing like this in Germany.” Kathrin and Thomas Creuzberger from Stuttgart have just settled down in the sun on a little island in lake Foxen. Their day’s canoeing is over and they are about to make their evening meal. “This is the second time we have come canoeing on the Dalsland Canal and we think it’s wonderful here. If we find a nice place to camp overnight we can just stop there and enjoy the silence. We can go canoeing at home in Stuttgart as well but we don’t have the unspoiled nature you have here.” Mario van den Voort from Holland also loves the countryside. He is on a canoeing holiday with a friend and their respective sons. He explains that this is the third time he has come to Dalsland. (' “But it’s the first time I’ve brought the boys along. They think it’s great, and they really want to spend a night in a wind shelter at one of the camp sites. It’s more fun than a tent.” From Holland Mario comes from Zwolle in Holland, and a big smile comes to his face as he talks about his experiences on the Dalsland Canal. “The countryside is absolutely tremendous and the people are so friendly. It’s little things like the fact that you can leave spades and saws out in the open at the camp site. Back home in Holland they would disappear within 20 minutes.” He tells us that they drove up from Holland to Bengtsfors. “From there we pedalled rail cycles to Årjäng. Then we rented canoes, and now we’re gradually making our way back to Bengtsfors. We’re not in any hurry. Yesterday we did some fishing, but we didn’t have much luck,” he says. So they were delighted when they found out that Leif, the lockkeeper in Gustavfors, sells fresh-smoked vendace. “We’re not going to starve after all,” laughs Mario. Perfect for canoeing The Dalsland Canal lake system could be purpose-made for canoeing. The lakes are long and narrow, there are hardly any waves to speak of, and when you’re ready for a cup of tea it’s just a matter of filling your kettle in the lake. The water is crystal clear. “We also have a good network of camp sites,” comments the canal inspector. “Once canoeing tourists have bought a conservation pass they can use any of the sites. These have wind shelters, fire pits, a wood supply and toilets. The fee for the conservation pass goes towards maintaining and inspecting the sites.” Really close to nature Canoeists get closer to nature than anyone else. They glide along almost silently, without disturbing the elk that comes to the water’s edge to drink, or the beaver splashing about with their broad tails. Mario van De Voort is completely satisfied with his holiday in Dalsland. But he is a little worried that we’re advertising too much. Christoph Schirmer and Markus Kempf make use of one of the purpose-built wind shelters for a game of chess. (( () K_fj\n_fjX`cXc`kkc\]lik_\i [`jZfm\idlZ_dfi\ Many boating tourists explore the Dalsland Canal from Köpmannebro to Bengtsfors, or possibly Lennartsfors, and then head back again. But they are missing what is probably the best part. We travelled to the northernmost point on the canal, Östervallskog, just a few kilometres from the Norwegian border, just to see if there were any boats there. We see two boats at the guest marina, but no sign of life. Maybe they are still sleeping. We sit on a rock outcrop and get out the thermos. Just then two couples appear. They weren’t having a lie-in. “We’ve just walked to Norway,” they say happily. Birgitta and Stefan Björneson and Margareta and Anders Olofsson have not walked far, but they have at least been to another country. They come from Gothenburg and have made it all the way up here. “If you’ve toured the west coast on a boat you really appreciate the peace up here on the Dalsland Canal. The northernmost stretch is probably the best of all, and the quietest. The countryside is a little wild, you get to open the bridges yourself, and no one is in any rush. It’s better than a luxury cruise in the Caribbean,” they say. We accompany them a little way south, to a bridge that has to be opened manually. Just as Stefan is about to open the bridge a motorcyclist pulls up. He lives nearby and Stefan asks him if he wants to cross the bridge before he opens it. “No, I’ll wait. I’m on holiday,” he says. That’s the way things work up here. Hurrying is just not part of life. Snäcke canal Snäcke is another less well-known part of the canal system. It is a short branch that heads northwards just after Köpmannebro. It is a truly idyllic stretch, according to Benny Ruus, Canal Director. “For instance, there is Henriksholm Mansion on an island in lake Ånimmen, and the lock at Strömmen, which is still manually operated. Otto Hesselbom, a well-known landscape painter, grew up in this area, and the mansion on Henriksholm island can be seen in his famous painting “Our country” (Vårt land). At the far north of Snäcke canal, in the area around Fröskog, Tage Danielsson directed the film Ronia the Robber’s Daughter. You might even catch a glimpse of a wild harpie or goblin here. This section of the Dalsland Canal was also the last on which freight boats operated. They were used to carry quartz and quartzite from the quarries near lake Ärr, right up until the 1970s. (/ Lj`e^k_\cfZbj K_\:XeXcËjfne_fd\gX^\$nnn%[XcjcXe[jbXeXc%j\ Negotiating the locks is not as difficult as it perhaps appears. Begin by attracting the attention of the lockkeeper. After that you will be shown into the lock as soon as possible. The important thing is that you must follow the instructions given by the specially trained lockkeepers. And remember that it is only the lockkeepers who may open the locks and bridges. You can read more about the locks in the Description of the Canal (in Swedish only) on the nautical chart. and on the reverse side of the receipt for using the locks. In general, boats go through the locks in the same order that they come to the waiting jetty. However, sometimes boats must be taken out of order so that the available space in the lock can be best utilised. The lockkeeper will give a sign when it is time to sail into the lock. In all the locks there are two mooring ropes for every boat. One is placed round the cleat on the foredeck and the other round the cleat in the stern. There you will find most things that a boating fan may be looking for; facts about the Canal, latest news, lots of links, maps, offers, special information for those using their own boat or canoe, information about passenger vessels, monthly competitions, tourist information, accommodation along the Canal, and, not least, the story about the Aqueduct. 8]\nilc\j]fipflifneXe[fk_\ig\fgc\ËjjX]\kp UÊ ÌÊ}iÃÊÜÌ ÕÌÊÃ>Þ}ÊÌ >ÌÊÞÕÊ>`ÊÞÕÀÊVÀiÜÊÜi>ÀÊviÊ jackets while on board. It is now even easier to fish in this area, since you can buy a fishing permit which covers almoust all the lakes which form part of the Dalsland Canal. The week-long permit costs SEK 400, and is available from the locks at Köpmannebro, Lennartsfors, Töcksfors and Gustavsfors, from the Dalsland Center in Håverud and from the tourist office in Bengtsfors. @ejliXeZ\ Dalslands Kanal AB have insurance which covers both property and personnel. The insurance covers damage which can be proved to have been caused by shortcomings, carelessness or negligence on the part of the company or it’s personnel. If damage occurs it should immediately be inspected by the lockkeeper and the boat owner together, and the latter should then send a damage report to the canal manager. :Xef\CXe[$]fik_fj\n_f^fYpZXef\fibXpXb Kifcc_kk\:XeXc When travelling the whole route to and from Göteborg, there is an additional fee for the Trollhätte Canal. In some parts of it you are actually travelling in pure drinking-water. In order to keep the water clean, we have a few simple but important rules for handling toilet waste: Toilet waste must not be disposed of in man-made parts of the Canal or near guest harbours or population centres. Please use the three pump-out stations for disposal of human waste. Septic tanks may be emptied free of charge at the following places: UÊÊ FÛiÀÕ`ÊÊ>ÌÊÌ iÊÛÃÌÊ>À> UÊÊ i}ÌÃvÀÃÊÊ>ÌÊÌ iÊÛÃÌÊ>À> UÊ ÕÃÌ>ÛÃvÀÃÊÊ>ÌÊÌ iÊÛÃÌÊ>À> UÊÊ >ÃÊ`ÊÊ>ÌÊÌ iÊÛÃÌÊ>À> UÊ /VÃvÀÃÊÊ>ÌÊÌ iÊÛÃÌÊ>À> The pump-out stations’ suction nozzle are made of soft rubber and will fit 32-50 mm deck flanges. Only in very exceptional cases may waste be discharged into the major lakes. Sewage disposals for emptying of so-called Porta Potti toilets are available in most guest harbours – see list of guest harbours. J\im`Z\jkXk`fej$^l\jk_XiYflij Within the lake system the Canal company has built service stations at some places. There you will find WC, HWC, shower, sewage disposal and washing- machine/tumble-drier. For a small fee you will have access to these buildings. (0 =8:KJ <hl`gd\ek The following equipment is required on all boats: two boathooks, 4-6 substantial fenders and, of course, life jackets. Due to the fact that the same lockkeeper can at times be in charge of several locks, delays can be expected. The lockkeepers also have two breaks of 30 minutes each day, which can be taken at varying times.
