Alaska Highway News | GRAD 2014 Class of 2014 Mountain Christian Dawson Creek Secondary Tumbler Ridge Secondary Ron Pettigrew Presented by Alaska Highway News 2 GRAD 2014 | Alaska Highway News DAWSON CREEK Secondary School School graduates will walk across the stage on June 20th with dignity, purpose and options “Looking Forward” is a Reflection of who you are As graduation celebrations approach we tend to reflect upon the years that accumulated leading up to graduation and we get excited or nervous thinking about the years to come. The path to graduation for every student is unique. This, often meandering, path is filled with challenges, opportunities taken and lost, failures and successes. As our students mature, develop and grow from one grade to the next, they pick up new skills and understandings. We know that school is much greater than the accumulation of letter grades and percentages written on a transcript. We have come to realize the vital importance and value of the skills our students learn while traversing their educational pathway. Malcolm Gladwell, a well-known author and regular contributor to the New Yorker magazine, defined ‘The 10 000 Hour Rule’ in his book, Outliers. Gladwell’s Rule talks about the volume of time (10 000 hours) it takes to truly master a skill. His description addresses how circumstance, desire and drive play significant roles in making the ‘rule’ a reality. However, one cannot simply do something the same way for 10 000 hours and expect to become a master. Thoughtful practice in authentic circumstances or settings is needed. Think about the number of hours our graduates have spent in school from kindergarten through grade twelve. Here’s some basic math to consider: There are, on average, 180 school days each year. Students spend approximately six hours in school each day. Grade 12 is our students’ thirteenth year of school. Using these numbers, our graduates have spent about 14 040 hours learning in school by the time their graduation ceremony takes place; they have certainly exceeded the 10 000 hour mark! To earn graduation, students must have honed or mastered skills to support their successes. Our graduates must have not simply done school; rather they must have been active participants in their learning. Our graduates’ mastery of school is not related to one specific subject area. Instead, our students’ mastery stems from their capacity to collaborate, to communicate and to be both creative and innovative. Their mastery developed while they grew as learners, taking responsibility for their learning and becoming informed and literate citizens. Their mastery came from their capacity to positively adapt to change and from their resiliency to endure the social and academic challenges they faced while in school. The students of the Dawson Creek Secondary School’s graduating class of 2014 have consistently shared their unique masteries within the school and local community. They have demonstrated their skills, whether is was working together to raise awareness or financial support for a cause, expressing themselves through fine arts, applied skills and sports or sharing their learning through projects or presentations. Our graduates are ready to employ their unique masteries in new settings as they take that significant step into life past high school! Judy Halbert and Linda Kaser from the Network of Performance Based Schools coined a phrase that we at Dawson Creek Secondar y School have worked toward achieving: “Every learner crosses the stage with dignity, purpose and options.” The 2014 Dawson Creek Secondary School graduates will walk across the stage on June 20th with dignity, purpose and options. The students have shared their individual plans for their post secondary lives during the Grad Transitions Exit Interviews. Their plans are SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely). Our graduates have realistically considered what is needed for their success. They have defined success for themselves and they are ready to go after it. I wish to congratulate the 2014 Dawson Creek Secondary School graduates! What an absolute honour and pleasure it has been being there for the last few years of your journey toward graduation. Continue to be awesome! First, it’s a milestone for you in the fact that it is the end of one era in your life and the beginning of another. The second milestone is that you are graduating on Ron Pettigrew Christian School’s 25 Anniversary! Twenty-five years ago, before you were born, this school was providing great Michaela Bernier Rainbow Horseman Christian education and preparing for you! Some of you have been at RPCS for only a few years, but most of you have grown up with us.
