Washington Women In Need
Letter from the President
To WWIN Supporters and Friends:
2012 marks the 20th anniversary for WWIN. Your
generous support over these past twenty years has helped
lift thousands of women to a better life. Improved health
and continued education, combined with their own
determination and hard work, deliver amazing results to
our grantees.

headed households with children in the home are below
the federal poverty level. WWIN is committed to helping
these women who strive so diligently to improve their
lives, the lives of their children and the communities in
which they live.
A friend and WWIN volunteer recently shared with me a
quote from her grandmother that I believe captures the
vision we have for the women WWIN serves:
In this effort, I am privileged to serve alongside the
talented staff and volunteers of WWIN. This year
we welcomed our new Executive Director, Michelle
Nitz, and felt the immediate impact of her leadership,
knowledge and experience. We also moved the WWIN
office to downtown Bellevue near the transit center
which provides convenient access for grant recipients
visiting the office.
“I would like to live in such a way that when I am gone,
something fine and noble will remain in the hearts and
lives of those whom I have touched as I’ve traveled this
way.”
With your support, we have accomplished a lot these last
20 years. We have some exciting plans for next year and,
with your help, we will continue to make a difference in
our communities “one woman at a time”.
I hope as you read these pages you will be proud of the
successes of these women and of your part in contributing Shirley Heath, President FY13
to their fine and noble accomplishments.
WWIN disbursed over $590,000 in 186 individual grants
this year for education and healthcare, with the largest
share of funding in education. Difficult economic times
continue to highlight the need for our services. In
Washington State, 28% of female-headed households
are below the federal poverty level, and 37% of female-

WWIN helps to empower a grantee to achieve her goals, from
improving her health and well-being to obtaining her degree.
These accomplishments lead to increased self-confidence,
increased self-sufficiency, and improved connections and
contributions to her community.
WWIN achieves its mission by providing direct financial assistance to
low‑income women in Washington State for health care and education.
Counseling Grants pay for up to 24 sessions of individual or group therapy with a
licensed mental health counselor.
Education Grants provide $5,000 in tuition and required books and supplies for
higher education at accredited institutions in Washington.
Insurance Premium Grants cover up to $5,000 in health insurance
premiums, co‑payments, co-insurance, and deductible expenses for women with health
insurance.
Physical, Dental, Vision, and Hearing Grants pay for up to
$3,000 in preventative physical health services, preventative and restorative dental services,
eye exams and glasses, and hearing exams and hearing aids.

*As noted in the 2008-2009 Annual Report, WWIN established a separate limited liability corporation to accept a gift of
3 residential lots and cash. WWIN is required to report fiscal year activity on a consolidated basis; this is shown as “nonoperating activities.” The property taxes and maintenance are paid from the cash in the LLC, not from cash segregated for
grants or WWIN operations; the decrease was required to reflect the decrease in value of the lots since the receipt of the gift.
