He often calls each of us to be all-the-more open to receive God’s mercy. The Pope has recognized that we can forget God’s mercy, or we can think he will tire of giving it to us if we keep coming to Him seeking it. Like Ignatius of Loyola, though, Pope Francis knows that God will never tire of sharing His mercy with us. The depths of His mercy are endless. We may grow tired of asking for it, but He will never tire of giving it. In a homily given in 2013, he said, “It is not easy to entrust oneself to God's mercy, because it is an abyss beyond our comprehension. But we must! ‘Oh, I am a great sinner!’ All the better! Go to Jesus: He likes you to tell him these things! He forgets, He has a very special capacity for forgetting. He forgets, He kisses you, He embraces you and He simply says to you: ‘Neither do I condemn you; go, and sin no more’" (Jn 8:11). Last year I had the grace to be in Rome during Lent and Holy Week. During Lent, Pope Francis presided at a penance service in the Basilica of St. Peter, and I was there to experience it. At one point in the ceremony, the Pope left his chair to walk to the confessional where he would hear confessions. On the way he stopped at another confessional, knelt down before the priest, and went to confession himself. Then he proceeded to his confessional to hear confessions. He then returned to his chair to continue the liturgy. What a beautiful witness of seeking and sharing God’s mercy. On March 13 of this year, Pope Francis once again presided over a Penance Service in the Basilica of St. Peter. He used the occasion to announce an Extraordinary Holy Year of Mercy for the entire Church. The concept of a Holy Year flows out of the traditions of the Old Testament. An ordinary Holy Year is called in the Church every twenty-five years and features special celebrations and pilgrimages, strong calls for conversion and repentance, and the offer of special opportunities to experience God’s grace through the sacraments, especially confession. The Pope can, outside of that sequence, call an extraordinary Holy Year, thus the Year of Mercy. In announcing the extraordinary Holy Year of Mercy, Pope Francis said: “The call of Jesus pushes each of us never to stop at the surface of things, especially when we are dealing with a person. We are called to look beyond, to focus on the heart to see how much generosity everyone is capable. No one can be excluded from the mercy of God; everyone knows the way to access it and the Church is the house that welcomes all and refuses no one. Its doors remain wide open, so that those who are touched by grace can find the certainty of forgiveness. The greater the sin, so much the greater must be the love that the Church expresses toward those who convert. “Dear brothers and sisters, I have often thought about how the Church might make clear its mission of being a witness to mercy. It is journey that begins with a spiritual conversion. For this reason, I have decided to call an extraordinary Jubilee that is to have the mercy of God at its center. It shall be a Holy Year of Mercy. We want to live this Year in the light of the Lord's words: ‘Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. (cf. Lk 6:36)’ “This Holy Year will begin on this coming Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception and will end on November 20, 2016, the Sunday dedicated to Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe – and living face of the Father’s mercy. I entrust the organization of this Jubilee to the Pontifical Council for Promotion of the New Evangelization, that [the dicastery] might animate it as a new stage in the journey of the Church on its mission to bring to every person the Gospel of mercy. “I am convinced that the whole Church will find in this Jubilee the joy needed to rediscover and make fruitful the mercy of God, with which all of us are called to give consolation to every man and woman of our time. From this moment, we entrust this Holy Year to the Mother of Mercy, that she might turn her gaze upon us and watch over our journey.” A University Parish: School of Prayer and Center for the New Evangelization 3 This Week at Sunday, April 12th 3:00 p.m. : Divine Mercy Celebration Monday, April 13th 7:00 p.m. : RCIA - Lounge 7:30 p.m. : Prayer & Life Workshop - Music Room Tuesday, April 14th 6:30 p.m. : Mass - Church 7:00 p.m. : Campus Ministry Meal - Library 7:30 p.m. : Talleres de Oracion y Vida - Music Room 7:45 p.m. : Women’s Emmaus - Lounge 8:00 p.m. : Young Adults - Parish Hall Wednesday, April 15th 4:00 p.m. : Religious Education Mass– Church 7:00 p.m. : Msgr.
