With this column, we begin a five part series on some of the obstacles that can prevent the growth of that mission. It is important for us to be aware of such obstacles, to name them, and to reject them. As we have discussed, the primary mission of the Church, of our parish community, and of each one of us as disciples is evangelization. We are invited to an ever-deepening encounter with Jesus Christ, an encounter of relationship in which we find our identity. We are called to be formed in that encounter so as to learn to live our authentic identity. And we are sent to evangelize, to be witnesses to Jesus Christ in the midst of the world. Pope Francis affirms this, saying: “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus. Those who accept his offer of salvation are set free from sin, sorrow, inner emptiness and loneliness” (Evangelii Gaudium, 1). The Holy Father goes on to say: “Goodness always tends to spread. Every authentic experience of truth and goodness seeks by its very nature to grow within us, and any person who has experienced a profound liberation becomes more sensitive to the needs of others. As it expands, goodness takes root and develops. If we wish to lead a dignified and fulfilling life, we have to reach out to others and seek their good. In this regard, several sayings of Saint Paul will not surprise us: ‘The love of Christ urges us on’ (2 Cor 5:14); ‘Woe to me if I do not proclaim the Gospel’ (1 Cor 9:16)” (Evangelii Gaudium, 9). Sinfulness can block our ability to act on this mission. Psychological dysfunction can block our ability to act on this mission. The influence of evil and our collaboration with it can block our ability to act on this mission. Today, however, let us simply begin with some foundational attitudes that can serve to diminish our ability to evangelize, to be witnesses of Jesus Christ as individuals, and as a parish community. A Spirit of Obstinacy. To be obstinate is to “firmly or stubbornly [adhere] to one's purpose, opinion, etc.; not yielding to argument, persuasion, or entreaty.” It is “characterized by inflexible persistence or an unyielding attitude.” To be a disciple means to be a student, to follow the teachings of a teacher. Someone who is obstinate does not “follow.” We have alluded to this before. In March of 2013, I preached at all the weekend masses saying that I believe we were ready in our healing process “to put out into the deep with [the Lord], to lay aside the superficial masks that cannot satisfy us and enter into deeper communion with Him – the communion which alone can heal us and fill us.” I also said on that occasion that “there are those who will not respond to the invitation, some because they are not ready and some because they will simply choose to dig their heels in and not move.” A Spirit of Discouragement. Looking at its roots, discouragement means to take away courage. It is “the act of making something less likely to happen or of making people less likely to do something.” The voice of discouragement is the voice of one who always sees the negative and is blind to the good. It is the voice of one who needs to tear down rather than build up. It is a voice of one who refuses to follow Joy. It is the voice the “prophets of gloom,” as St. John XXIII said. In my bulletin column for January 19, 2014, I quoted Pope Francis saying: “One of the more serious temptations which stifles boldness and zeal is a defeatism which turns us into querulous and disillusioned pessimists, ‘sourpussses’” (Evangelii Gaudium, 85). A Spirit of Falsity. Far beyond those who occasionally tell a fib, there are those who live a life in which their identity and their interpretation of reality is actually caught up in a deep and complex web of lies – sometimes very directly countering the truth of reality and at other times very subtly twisting it. They refuse to follow the Truth; they will not look at themselves and the reality in front of them in the “light of truth, veritas, presenting themselves to the Lord in humility and obedience,” as I invited our community to do this past Lent. Those whose identities and interpretation of reality are wrapped up in lies live on the defensive, for they must convince others to join them in their fragile world of misrepresentations. Often the falsity is designed to foster confusion and anxiety in others. The Catechism of the Catholic Church of the Catholic Church teaches: “Lying is the most direct offense of the truth. To lie is to speak or act against the truth in order to lead into error someone who has the right to know the truth” (CCC, 2484). A Spirit of Disobedience and Hardness of Heart. “Obedience” comes from the Latin word “obaudire,” which in its roots means to “listen well” and follow the voice of another. To be “disobedient,” then, is to be “very deaf” and refuse to follow. This often flows out of pride. In my homily for this past Good Friday, I reflected on obedience, the posture of Jesus before the heavenly Father, saying that “through His obedience, born in love, Jesus gains for us what was lost in disobedience.” Obedience is also the posture of the saints. In my bulletin column of February 13, 2011, I quoted Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman, who said, “A saint differs from an ordinary religious man, I say in this – that he sets before him as the one object of his life, to please and obey God; that he ever aims to submit his will to God’s will; that he earnestly follows after holiness; and that he is habitually striving to have a closer resemblance to Christ in all things.” We must reject these postures in ourselves and not allow ourselves to be manipulated by others who exhibit them. The thread that can be said to tie these postures together is a lack of docility before the Holy Spirit. To be disciples, “to follow,” requires docility. In my bulletin column of April 28, 2013, I quoted Pope Francis, who said: “Stubborn! You always resist the Holy Spirit . . . always, even among us . . . there is resistance to the Holy Spirit. To put it plainly: the Holy Spirit gives us discomfort. Because it moves us, makes us walk, propels the Church to move forward . . . Do not resist the Holy Spirit: this is the grace that I wish that we all ask to the Lord – docility to the Holy Spirit, in the Spirit that comes to us and makes us go forward in the path of holiness, the holiness of the beautiful Church. The grace of docility to the Holy Spirit.” A University Parish: School of Prayer and Center for the New Evangelization 3 This Week at Monday, April 20th 7:00 p.m. : RCIA - Lounge 7:30 p.m. : Prayer & Life Workshop - Music Room Tuesday, April 21st 6:30 p.m. : Mass - Church 7:00 p.m. : Campus Ministry Meal - Library 7:00 p.m. : Talleres de Oracion y Vida - Music Room 7:00 p.m. : Book Club - Lounge 7:00 p.m. : Finance Council Conference Room 8:00 p.m. : Young Adults - Parish Hall Wednesday, April 22nd 4:00 p.m. : Religious Education – SOMI 6:30 p.m. : Sandwich Making (Homeless Ministry) 7:00 p.m. : Msgr.
